The brilliance of the lyrics almost drown out how very good the music is. Perfect music starts here.

Never understood why Heaven 17 were not more successful. They sure as hell were more talented than The Human League.

Because they didn't realize the cute new romantic guy brings bigger crowds than the better singer.
(not offense to Phil but Glenn was more experienced at the time)
Apparently Glenn was going to be the front for Human League but he was in another project, but became available not long after. And that's the original Human League broke up, leaving Phil with the name.

Personally love both bands, so glad things panned out the way they did! But just thinking, listening to this, I would love to hear Oakey's voice on this (just as I loved hearing Gregory doing a version of Being Boiled).

I adore Heaven 17, and have for years. This video, and song, is stunning and just listen to the lyrics...none of the modern day repeated one line rubbish. A story in a song ... As are most of their material.
Love them and will do "for a very long time" 😉👍👍👍😉
Thanks Glenn and Martyn for still touring, see you again in November xxx

And as the low aggress the high
All you can do is sit and cry
You've only got yourself to blame
Don't try to stop me; it's too late
My mind's made up; this job won't wait
There's nothing left for me to say
Hey! There's no need to debate
It's time to designate your fate
Take the M out of M.A.D.
    Let's all make a bomb
Take one hundred scientists or more
Place in a room and lock the door
Let them confer for half their lives
Unlock the door; go in and see
What they have made for you and me
A brand new toy to idolize
Although the war has just begun
Ignore the sirens; let's have fun
Put on your best; go out in style
    Although our future's looking black
We'll go downtown and join the pack
    Let's celebrate and vapourize

@whyshouldI303 You're right!. The Penthouse & Pavement album is clearly divided in two parts. The A-side is material produced after they split , and the B- side is material composed while they still were with Phil Oakey.

I only ever got into the Human League 16 years later after the fact. I was straight up hardcore punk rock. However this song was about nuclear war and it was just as relevant as any anti-nuke punk anxiety song. Thus I got into synth-pop, then electronica. I recommend to anyone if they can find it on UA-cam the BBC: "Young Guns" TV show that talks about how the Heaven 17, Human League and how one became the other.

Onone hand it's very sad that these two supergroups were once one and then parted... but... had it not happened, than who kows what might have (not) happened...
The Human League would not have looked for Joanne and Suzanne... and Heaven 17 would not have happened at all...
Still... Penthouse and Pavement is my FAVE Heaven17 album... electro and all chromeplated and yet a lot of funky elements... cool stuff.

Tulio Oñate - Phil isn't completely to blame on the break up of the original Human League. Martyn Ware was missing rehearsals and forced the HL to cancel a few gigs. It was costing everyone involved with the band money.Philip thought that Ian would support him. He was wrong. Beside,Glenn Gregory was their original choice for singer, but he wasn't available. Also, Phil was improving as a lyricist and Martyn wasn't thrilled with that at the time. He was the driving force of the original HL band. Philip was not mature enough to talk it out with Martyn at the time.

Those who ignore history are doomed to make similar mistakes as those in the past, with tragic consequences, a sizable minority of young people are awake but many just don't want to know/hear about it, materialism, entertainment like sport and other distractions are more important.

Heaven 17 is a more musically trained group than The Human League, Martin, Ian & Glenn are real musicians, with not only electro roots, but also jazz & soul training. Unfortunately Phil Oakey Once was an obnoxiuos moron who fired martin ware and Ian Craig from the League, without knowing even how to program a synth. He rose HL from ashes, But No he wasn't the band's genius!!, although i recognize he has become a great musician & programmer.

Well quite a few late millennials and zoomers go ga ga for Fleetwood Mac too, however I agree I was 18 my brother was 19 when this album came out and we both fell in love with underground synth pop so all the 1970's rock albums sounded prehistoric and irrelevant to us then so went to the back of collection, hilarious how all things eventually come around again.
