- Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware were the founder members of pioneering British electro-pop group The Human League; Glenn Gregory had been their original choice when seeking a vocalist for the band but he was unavailable at the time, so they chose Philip Oakey instead. When personal and creative tensions within the group reached breaking point in late 1980 Marsh and Ware left the band, ceding the Human League name to Oakey. Taking their new name from a fictional pop group mentioned in Anthony Burgess's novel, A Clockwork Orange, (where The Heaven Seventeen are at number 4 in the charts with "Inside"), they became Heaven 17 and formed the production company British Electric Foundation (BEF)
On 16 February 2010, Heaven 17 joined La Roux to record a joint live session for the BBC which was shown on the BBC Red Button interactive channel in January 2010 while Glenn Gregory joined La Roux on stage at Glastonbury on 26 June 2010, performing "Temptation". (La Roux cite Heaven 17 as one of their main influences).[9] The two acts also appeared live on stage at the War Child Brit Awards aftershow in February 2010.[10][11]
In the run up to their 30th anniversary, the band announced several live dates in which they would perform their 1981 debut album Penthouse and Pavement live in its entirety for the first time. The dates were scheduled over November and December 2010 with the first date held on 10 November 2010 at the well known Leadmill venue in Sheffield. By chance the Leadmill also celebrated a 30 year anniversary in 2010. By their own admission this Leadmill gig was one of the band's most successful. The band performed a couple of dates of the Penthouse and Pavement tour in March 2010, one of which was in Sheffield and was filmed and shown on BBC Two on 16 May 2010. An hour-long documentary about the making of the album was shown on BBC Two the following night.[12] This film was also screened at a special "Music in Sheffield" evening of films at the Showroom in Sheffield, at which Martyn Ware attended, on the eve of the announcement of the City of Culture 2013. Sheffield were unsuccessful losing out to Derry.
The band appeared on on Later... with Jools Holland on 22 October 2010, performing "Fascist Groove Thang" and "Temptation" and appeared in BBC Children in Need in November 2010. They also made a tongue-in-cheek appearance in TV advertisements for Sheffield-based broadband provider, Plusnet.[13] On 22 November the band released a 2 disc DVD combining never-seen-before documentary and rehearsal footage with the band's full live concert filmed in Sheffield in March 2010. Also included was a unique collection of all the digital videos used in the live show, set to the accompanying live audio from the performance. Each video was commissioned by a different visual artist and included both established up-and-coming artists from the worlds of digital and graphic design, fine art and film - Розваги
Penthouse and Pavement is one of my all-time favourite albums!
Me too! A real treat to see this....
I don't know why this band did not become more popular
They were brilliant!
After their first three albums, which were critically lauded and well received by the listening public, they released lacklustre, overly commercial sets such as Pleasure One and Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho. That's why.
This performance blows me away. Better than listening to the studio album. True professionals!
Bass player is amazing...I loved this album ...inspired me to play bass
Heaven 17 - a highly underestimated band.
Great albums: Penthouse & Pavement, The Luxury Gap, How Men Are.
Timeless.
What an awesome bass player at this concert!
From Germany...
Bass Player.....I never thought I would see anyone play the bass lines to this album live. And so perfectly too... eternal respect!
He's definitely killing' it!
Who is the bass player?!
The original Penthouse and pavement album had a real bass player on it, in the form of John Wilson. I don't know if this is him, but it sounds very much like him
@@deborahkeith2265 His name is Julian Crampton he used to play with Incognito!
@@joelbleakley5519 he is an amazing bass player!
Hadn't seen this .. stunning .. bass and analog electronica recreations.. wow.. 30 years but well worth the wait
Great bass playing by Julian Crampton
So great to see this on UA-cam. I was there & it was incredible. In their home of Sheffield, in an old industrial steel works. Amazing. What was so great was that they had a great time too.
Bass player should have a medal. Fantastic band & performance altogether.
fantastic job...from a difficult album to do live.
Heaven 17's music does not get the awareness that it deserves.
I listen to their music a lot, still in 2024. I'm 58.
...'But now, I am just the man who sings'
What a show up. Fabulous.
Fabulous concert love this band
1980's bands had great bassists. Heaven 17, Simple Minds, Level 42, OMD, etc
Not forgetting Numan who gave us Pino Palladino.
These days a bass line is programmed into a sequencer/synthesizer and someone turns it on and off. A lot of today's music is played with electronic devices and tape machines. I don't think that we will have as many great bands in the future like we did in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Martyn Ware, I Love you mate!
What fantatisc sound you guys have created and still kicking all these years.
We live Fast Forever! Peace and Love, Paulo.
That chic is a bad ass singer
They had to call the fire department twice on the rhythm section. That shit was hot
Grazie, è sempre bello ascoltarli, anche adesso!
That bassist can kick ass- amazing!

What a feast to see this concert! I was a big fan in the 80's. Love it to see my former heroes performing live. They are a bit older, but still have the spirit from 30 years ago. Thanx for the video!
I travel the world and Ive never seen a Vintage Heaven 17 T shirt. Love to have one. -Stu Nizny Pixel 19 Vintage clothing LLC ★★★★★ A Loyal Fan for 30 Years.

My name is Cassiano, from Brazil, i'm very very fan of Heaven 17, does anyone here have the full dvd of this show and could post in full dvd with the original menus in rutracker or some other torrent? because the original is out of print already and would love to have this item. a hug to all |
They're Better than the Human League, Glenn Gregory is Fantastic as their bass player, I do specially LOVE their version of Wichita Lineman ( Glenn Campbell) & Perfect Day formerly of Lou Reed.
Oh, the Leadmill ... takes me back.
Big, big smile!
this music have perfect keyboard rhytm
A Class act
Fantastic as seen then over 12 times live and up close and personal There on tour with Squeeze in Oct in the UK
Still a good sound
Deberian hacer un documental de THE HUMAN LEAGUE también
Bomb!
i saw then at the Leadmill in November 2010 amazing
classed as pop,but theres a lot of funky killer basslines and synth solos in 80s pop,and more intelligent lyrics than the throwaway pop today
Sheffield music uk, the human league very much grup.
I was 57 she was 16
is this original line up?
fantastici
ok. who's the bass player?
Ugo Trivelli John Wilson he played on the original version
Julian Crampton is playing bass on this gig. The album had John Wilson. I asked Julian where John was these days but no-one could find him. He was an amazing bassist. There are some gigs of John with the band on TV in the 80's, he's a leftie playing a rightie bass upside down.
I swear , Glenn still thinks hes got hair on his Bonce (Head)
And that Female, backup singer
Dont even start lol , ;)
Too bad he gave up on Human League who went on to achieve international fame !
No new material since 2008.
we are but refugees, let it be right, hehe
Claudia gotz some conk on her now ;(
Mind you , she is German
In fairness she was top Totty back in the day ;)
I love propaganda
If only they hadn't gone on that farcical Communist trip Heaven 17 might have been good. Still, four great songs on Luxury Gap is enough.
Had to turn off as the bint singing shotgun with GG is just too in your face singing all over parts when she pleases.... Awful
That womans voice ruins this classic.....
Yeah!!!
Totally agree
She needs to shut up go back to her chateau
Warbling on and on
Killing the tunes
