I recently published my first book on Amazon entitled Defending the Faith: Word of Faith Apologetics. It’s a response to the numerous charges against and misrepresentations of the Word of Faith movement and theology. I also have a CD of original music on CD Baby entitled Gates of Pearl. “Jew and Greek” is a good name because the two civilizations that influenced Western civilization the most were those of the Judeo-Christian and Greek worlds. From the Jews we received our values and a monotheistic theology, and from the Greeks we got philosophy which brought us science, sports, the arts, democracy, and economics. As a result I discuss all of the above in this blog and in my videos.

Great analysis. Joel's messages of hope really helped me when I was struggling a few years ago. I don't listen to him as much now because I prefer a more steady spiritual diet while his messages are like ice cream. May God continue to use his ministry. 🙏

@thomasjnemeth interesting. The word itself should be encouraging, including the parts the point the finger at us. I'd care about the accuracy and essence of the preaching. If it's 90% life coaching, I'd rather go to people that have studied relevant material and won't feel betrayed by the word when I realize God/Jesus did not promise me comfort and prosperity on earth

    • @ntlearning
      @ntlearning Рік тому +4

@@IronKore I think its more 90% encouragement. Not life coaching. I haven't listened to Joel for a long time, but he's good as part of a broader smorgasbord or diet from time to time. A salad sandwich is good from time to time. I believe he has a spirit of faith and encouragement. I like him.
However, I don't know where you get this idea that Joel preachers comfort? I see him very often encouraging people who are in pain not to give up and trust God. That, I believe, is his main gifting.
I've always got the impression that Joel believes people have a "certain" destiny that God has for them (which I also believe) and its about helping them through encouragement to reach that dream whatever that is. I just think people need more teaching on how God doesn't bless selfish dreams or lazy people or trying to be something you are not gifted for. People are not always honest with themselves.
And on prosperity. A lot of his messages have nothing to do with money or prosperity. Some do - but a lot don't.

I confess that when I was young in Christ, I allowed the lies of spiteful men and the opinions of prejudiced people lead me astray on Joel Osteen.
He's really not that bad. He's good at what he does, and if you are already a Spirit-filled believer capable of eating the meat and spitting out the bones, his positive messages are of great encouragement and a breath of fresh air in a Christian culture that loves to hate on prosperity and deny every blessing from God, i.e. the "poverty gospel" preached by spiritually dead millionaire pastors.
I was led astray but I thank God that He saw fit to deliver me from the deception as I grew in Him.
Praise the glorious Father, praise the beautiful Son, and Praise the Holy Spirit of Truth for His faithfulness and giving me the faith to trust in all God's blessings and discern the wolves in sheep's clothing.

it was his final pastors conference, where he focused on world missions and pay the way for every person who wanted to come from any nation of the world to join the conference that I met a man from Bhutan. This became my most important contact by which every contact I ever received my entire life in the ministry came from. We now have 15 Bible schools and 13 nations and over 500 churches in a school of missions where we send out missionaries we have preach the gospel to over a half 1 million people and these are people who have never once heard the gospel of Jesus Christ. We just got back from preaching, and reaching one of the unengaged unreached people groups that no one had ever been able to find nor reach according to the Joshua project. After much planning and work, we located them after a week of searching in the area where the Joshua project said they were. They weren’t exactly where we were told but we did eventually find them, and we eventually broke through and engaged this formally unengaged group, and now we have told Joshua project about it. It is one of 24 unengaged unreached groups in Thailand and our goal is to reach all 24 unengaged groups in the next 24 months. All of this came from John Osteen’s final pastors conference in 1998 focused on missions and every contact I’ve ever made is because of that final conference. So this church has literally reached millions. It’s reached millions just through our ministry close to 3 million people and a half 1 million of those were completely unreached prior to us bringing the gospel to them. Can you imagine with 8000 other pastors and missionaries there how many other connections and how many tens of millions of people have been reached since that conference and since that time.? It’s a number that can never be counted. Thank God for John Osteen and for Joel.

Thank you for doing such a good job on this comprehensive video. I always wondered about Joel Osteen, but used him for my depressed clients because his messages were indisputably helpful. You really put to rest the various charges against him with in depth historical perspective (much like all your videos-such excellent work). I always kind of had the sense he was a regular guy and the synopsis you gave about how he got into extraordinary circumstances really clarifies the whole thing. There is an exercise girl who worked with Jack LaLanne and became a famous herself (Denise Austin) and she is just as cheery as Joel. A lot of people don’t like her either. I think the public is suspicious and just not willing to trust anyone who is too happy 😂

Interesting take on "cheeriness". I'm 67 and this is how I've always tended to be throughout my life. Perhaps this is why people have tended to challenge me or be not so nice to me. Life has definitely not always been kind to me but I have always just kept the bad times to myself and those closest to me.

I had never watched anything but snippets on the Larry King interview.
Providing the script along with his clarification of the interview helps a lot.
I know personality that its difficult to continually answer questions, from people who want you to fail.
Oprah at one time took an interest in preachers of the Gosple, and so many celebrities will change what they confess weekly.
I agree some better discernment should be used, whenever allowing their voice among the congregation.

My friend, I discovered your channel yesterday. In the mean time, this one being the last one, I have viewed 4 or 5 of your videos. And to just say it has been a blessing would be an understatement. So thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Your assessment and conclusions about Joel and his ministry were just amazing, encouraging and inspiring.
I have been a believer in Jesus Christ for over 47 years now. The one part of this video that caught my attention the most was his views about Christ being the ONLY way. You and I may have to agree to disagree on this, don’t know enough about you to know for sure, but I think I know what he means, which I agree with. Jesus IS the ONLY way for anyone to heaven, BUT what needs to happen in a man’s heart for Jesus to save him only God knows. I’ve always wrestled with the idea of someone having a pure heart, believing in a one true God and hungering after Him, but for whatever reason without the knowledge of the gospel that I have. Would God reject him or her and not bring them under the saving power of Christ simply because of what they don’t know at an intellectual level? I say NO! God will always judge the heart of those seeking to know Him as the most important thing. And Jesus is there to be a blessing to them. Even if they didn’t have knowledge of Jesus the way I have it.
I don’t have a big ministry to protect and defend so I guess I could make my beliefs known without any fear of loosing anything.
But regardless my brother of how you see my views, thank you and may the Lord bless you richly and continue using you!

The Problem with intellectuals they can only speak to intellectuals because no one else understands them, also a man's intellect does not open the eyes of the blind only God opens the eyes of the blind, it is written, that the Christ rejoiced in the spirit because the father had given the things of God to little children and not the wise and learned, there are many in the Christian faith who speak much error because they lost in their intellectual arguments and cannot see a simple truth that is in front of their faces, John Macarthur, RC sproul and all those like them, they may bring forth intellectual understanding of the scriptures but they still fail to see the truth, because there is one thing that John MaCarthur lacks and all those like him is love, the reason why Joel Osteen does not condemn those who do not believe in the Christ is because he loves them and it is not in his heart to do so and rightly so, if I can fathom all things and yet have not love I have nothing I am nothing, man can never claim to another man that he is condemned and going to hell, because when he does this he prophecies, then the man who prophecies the condemnation of another man better pray to God that this man is condemned, because if he isn't, then the man who has prophesied has become a false prophet, and in this, he only condemns himself, for no man knows what happens to a man when he passes from this world only God, as it is written, I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy and I will not have mercy upon whom I will not have mercy, this is the judgement of God, not the judgement of man.

I think you cut him a little too much slack… Especially on the theology part… And I am as Pentecostal as it gets with a capital P, so I am not some reform person. Being picky, I’m just a picky Pentecostal… Lol I actually believe that his gift is exhortation as in Romans 12. The thing is, that does not a five fold minister make. He would be a good Christian motivational speaker, and I do not mean that as a slam. I think there is a place for them, but they should not be pastoring regardless of how many thousands of people go. The gifts of pastor and teacher often go together and well they should. Peter admonished the elders to feed the flock of God over which the Holy Ghost had made them overseers. Not just for them to delegate that responsibility to whoever may be doing the midweek. Thank God for that, but bishops should be able to teach, one Timothy, three verses, one: seven, Titus, one verses 5:9. So that is my main hobby horse there. But I believe he loves the Lord, and he is gifted to exhort And he has a powerful gift there, and I believe that people who are babies in the Lord and those who are given to depression, self-pity, unforgiveness issues, etc. can be helped and encouraged by him. By this, I do not mean that pastors cannot exhort, because I believe that all five ministry gifts can exhort, apart from the gift of exhortation alone, which Brother Hagan used to talk about. But even if a pastor loves to preach and exhort, he should be able to teach, and also raise up teachers in the midst of the congregation as well.

As a capital Pentecostal myself, I find your views not isolated with other Pentecostals. I know many who never liked his ministry - but they have nothing to do with the slander or impunity Joel gets on youtube.
I like him. I don't listen to Joel for my theology. He's an encourager.
However, I would offer two things: many pentecostals are actually evangelical in their thinking (and that's not always a bad thing). As a Pentecostal movement, we got in bed with the Evangelicals in the 1930's and 40's for respectability and so much of their thinking has come over the Pentecostal church. Pentecostals also have Methodists roots too. Just being doing a big study on our beginnings for my Masters Thesis.
Secondly, its possible that in their church he actually does have other teachers who minister. Having been part of a mega church myself in the past, I've seen lots of rotations of different gifts from week to week including the teachers - yet only the senior pastors sessions make it to TV.
He may even only preach twice out of 5 sessions.

@@ntlearning right… I guess you could say I am evangelical with a small E. We certainly need to be evangelistic and we believe in the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, so I guess that makes me an evangelical, but many do not like us Pentecostals and charismatics, if you will, and one of the things that I have seen with denominations, such as the assemblies of god and others, is that they seem to want to be evangelicals so badly that they have forsaken their roots. Yes, we certainly do have Baptist and Methodist roots, depending on if your denomination or movement is second blessing or finished work in their theology, not that that should ever have been a division, but anyhow. I am sure that he has teachers there, and in fact, I know that he does. That is a good thing, but I still say that if you are unable to teach, you should not be the senior leader of a work, because bishops should be able to teach, one Timothy three and Titus one. Maybe it is not the strongest gifting, but it should be there, and it should be on display. He certainly is an exhorter, and I give him that, but there is more to the gospel, then two or three minutes at the end of your program and giving a two or three minute appeal and not even really explaining it. Thank God for all those who are positively affected, but makes up a little ray comfort, David, Wilkerson, Mark Barclay, etc. Lol also, I know he apologized for that interview and all, but he did it, because there was a bunch of outlast, and there should’ve been. Anyhow… His dad was awesome and I appreciate all the good that Joel does. I do not dislike him as an individual, but I still say that it is imbalanced, and anyone that looks to him for doctrine just is not in a good place. You need more than a charismatic version of Norman Vincent Peale.

@@ryandawson2877 Thanks for your gracious reply. I'm reading a lot of academic literature from Pentecostal scholars at the moment and what I've found is that there is a resounding call for a "u-turn" and for us to head back somewhat more to the "postive" aspects of our Wesleyan roots. Both Finished work and Wesleyan/Holiness have their good and bad points, and I think if we were clever we would have taken the best of both. Back in those times though, it was easy to be tribal.
I know what you are saying about Pentecostals getting attacked but to be honest we are a bigger group than Evangelicals (the third force in Christendom) and I want to see Pentecostals come out of Evangelicalism. Of course, that wouldn't mean we rip out all of our Evangelical roots - of course not!! We'll always have an Evangelical part of our DNA, but I would rather see us be a little more "sacramental" with Communion like Seymour and the early Wesleyan groups were. I've been reading and hearing lots of testimonies of people getting healed in Communion. I believe Zwinglianism from the Evangelical side chains the Holy Spirit down into Symbolism. No miracles happening. If you are interested in further reading about this, you can find the article here: brill.com/view/journals/pent/26/2/article-p252_252.xml?language=en
And as for Joel Osteen, well, I don't always defend him because he's not Pentecostal. I can't defend every charismatic as they were never really one of us, and Joel should be furthering his bible studies and growing in this area, as you correctly point out. But I do like him.
I think many of the attacks he gets are just plain misrepresentation from Calvinists who don't argue with Catholics anymore - usually because they lose.

This is a very good video. I disagree with a lot of the way Joel handles theology, but our criticisms should be grounded in reality and our attitude shouldn't be one of petty hatred. It's so easy to get caught up in rumors and make villains out of people we don't are with and that's not how Christians should conduct ourselves. This was a good humbling reminder for me.

The only criteria I've ever seen given with 'Its not God's will to heal every time' is 'Well, because everyone doesn't get healed every time' which to be equally fair and blunt is downright stupid. It's a logical fallacy.

The Bible says that man was made in God's image. Several early church fathers made references to believers becoming gods, so the implications of the _imago dei_ have been discussed throughout church history. As for the "prosperity gospel", prosperity is all through the Bible. It was part of Israel's covenant with Yaweh. Teaching on prosperity and the _imago dei_ doesn't make you a false teacher. Violating essential doctrines like the Resurrection and the deity of Jesus does, and Joel Osteen affirms all of the essentials.
