I agree. I thought about what would be cool to see regarding oil paints would be two particular topics: 1. Metallics - you said you could talk about them for hours :) 2. Skin - this is an area I feel should benefit a lot from oils but I still have some trouble with them
A few years ago, thanks to you, I discovered how wonderful painting with oil paints is. I'm very grateful to you for that. I hope that oil paints will remain a regular feature on your channel because, unfortunately, very few miniature painters use this medium.
Oil painting is absolutely the direction serious mini painters should be going. It unlocks all new levels of speed and blending. The misinformation in the hobby about the challenges of oil painting and the default acrylic process needs to go! Thank you so much for this content - it's incredible stuff.
Yes, please do more oil painting topics. I love painting in oil only. Oil needs more love in the miniature painting world. So many think oil paint is only good for washes. That’s a shame.
Yes, more oil painting content! More old school oil tricks/techniques sound amazing. TMM oil sounds lovely! You have no many miniature painters you are inspiring to paint more artistically. Thank you for being really clear too. Showing your paints, speaking to your thinning amount and why, explaining how long you're waiting between applications (and why). This video series of yours is amazing.
One thing I love about oils is that you don't have to go back to the pallet, because the paint won't dry inside you brush. Also "drybrushing" with oil paints is a dream because of the smooth finish.
@@eviltables7235 it's closer to overbrushing because the paint will never be dry. You can have very little on the brush and it will still work. You can blend it later as well. Really like it on something like hair or fur (depending on how they are sculpted of course).
Love it when you do oils, either entirely or as part of a project. When I first started there was only oils and enamel so oils have always been a part of my process and always think it’s great when they get greater exposure and in depth how to use. Well done as always. 👍👍👍
Years ago, I remember reading a Brom interview where he also talked about underpainting (base tones and volumes) his art with acrylics, and then adding oils on top to give life and refine details. You’re in good company here. 👍👍👍
I'm a huge sucker for oil paint content for miniature painting. I'm always looking for new tools and tricks to add to my proverbial toolbox. Keep up the great work Marco! I'll be back on your Patreon soon.
I moved to oils completely after painting a full cities of sigmar army with them and limited to zorn palette. It is so much easier and faster than acrylics it is hard to explain. Your videos gave me the courage and knowledge needed to try it
Hey Marco! Great video as always!! The one thing that I keep trying and that doesn't seem to work well for me but that is a constant in your videos is the use of the Acrylic Marker Refills as a primer - could you please make a video on this going over how you make them work for that so consistently? Thanks a ton for your content and cheers.
This is some of the best painting content out there. You and James Wappel are the main reason I’ve gotten back into painting. Once you get the hang of the differences oil paint is indeed so much easier and faster than acrylic. These oil painting videos are amazing and instructive. Thank you!
After 20 years I discovered oils. I have always loved working dark to light and as a kid I loved nothing more than using cold or warm pastels. How its taken me 20 years to get into oils I dont know! but I love your series and you are my GO TO! Love your channel, love your voice and your teaching
I've been painting models with only oil paints for quite a while now, and it's really been a learning journey for me. Always wonderful to get some inspiration and instruction from the master! The metallic oil (Gamblin Silver) that you're using is probably the best metallic paint I've ever tried. However, some metallic oils are nowhere near as good! For example, the Rembrandt brand of oil colours has pretty bad metal paints. The important thing is to find an oil paint that uses actual metallic pigment, instead of mica.
Love all your content Marco, thanks for this one. Always feel like I learn something new or understand something clearer. I’m a fan of all your stuff but I love the oil painting content. I don’t have even a fraction of the time to dedicate to acrylic painting to get a result I’d be pleased with, but your videos make oil painting seem approachable and efficient, without sacrificing even a little bit of quality. Almost always catch myself audibly saying “wow”.
Thank you for creating more oil content! I switched to using oils exclusively two years ago and never regretted it. I enjoy oils for the exact same reasons that you mention in this video. I hope to see more in the future!
If you do that deep dive on TMM oils it would be great if you could get into some of the nitty gritty of the differences between metallic oils and wax based oils, when to use one when to use the other and since they are both thinned with white spirit how to use the waxes with oils. As a separate thought what sort of techniques are there for using white spirit based enamels as the thinner in oil or wax paints, do you need to do specific things to make it work, is it an interesting idea that just makes a mess in real life?
Definitely yes to more oils! Love your content and it's so great to see actual tutorials involving oils - the people that show "how to"s are so few and far between. Bring it on!
Also, love that you are highlighting how much easier thick paint is to use for edge highlighting etc. So often I see beginners told thin your paints, but if little acknowledgement that different paint consistencies are the key to different techniques in mini painting
Amazing video as always :) thank. you !!! I just love your content on oils. It made me confident to start and use them and my paint jobs are a lot better than they were! Thank to you :)
Unbelievable! That is simply amazing. I've followed your oil videos for a while and used it a bit on my stormcast but I've still got a long way to go to get to this kind of speed.
Wonderful to see this less common approach to using oils. I challenged myself to paint using only oils and enamels for my Infinity Ariadna and Nomads (I was away for 6 months and didn't want to double up my collection of acrylics so only bought oils and enamels), and can confirm its a very quick way to do things! The "lively layers definitely take a bit of getting used to, but once used to it its really easy ^^
I have been painting a large commission in acrylics for what seems like months. I cut so much time off the final steps by edge-highlighting with oils and then realized too late I could have done the entire army in glorious linseed-oil scented paints. I will play around with the next batch of troops for my new Spearhead. Always nice to see your videos about our boi: oil paints!
More oils! More oils! I dont remember if i said it already, MORE OILS!!! thx for your work Marco. Gracias por tu trabajo y por aportar tanto a la comunidad de los pintores de minis, aficionados y no aficionados ;D
Zinc white is quite frown upon because zinc reacts badly with oils. Is a great white mixer for acrylics, but you better know perfectly what you are doing if you are gonna mix your colours with it in most oil mediums. Love your content, Marco. More oils and watercolor weathering, please!
