    I guess that GW (most people's introduction to mini painting these days) went with acrylic paints rather than oils, because of the less toxic and flammable nature of the medium made it better suited to GW's target audience. I remember, back in the elder times, John Blanche being held up as some sort of alchemist because he painted his minis with oils. Thank you for another fun and informative video.

    This is Marco the teacher to you absolutely need move your skills forward and your understanding outward.
    It's one of his best qualities and here he matches it with beginner friendly choices for the model, keeps it simple, brush step by brush step, and visually obvious. He even uses a non human skintone.
    This is a great addition to the NJM content library and the perfect starting point for folks to follow and surprise themselves with what they can easily do on a model from the start.
    Man's a genius.

      Marco mentioned James Wappel, once you've watched Marco's oils teaching vids and watched a session of James Wappel (very different approach to both painting and teaching), watch Dmitry Fesechko's tutorial too. He teaches more like Marco but without the bounding charm and killer choice in hats. He describes oils in a way that's particularly good for GW painters to transition to, with broadly familiar results. Once you've watched these three you're set to change your painting life

    I'm a hobbyist traditional oil painter and I started painting mini's based on what you teach here Marco. If you do paint 'pictures' it would be cool to see your work. I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to try the mini 'ground' instead of a canvas 'ground' :D and its become a huge amount of fun! Thank you.

    NOTHING this man ever shows is actually "easy mode". While the technique shown seems simple, knowing what color to put where and how much of it for the right shading/highlighting etc. and how much of it to wipe away is the actual artistic part here. It takes a lot of experience to make it look like him.

    The bread and butter metaphor works well in another way: Butter is much like an oil paint in that its primary medium is likewise oil. That's why there's the expression when using oil paints as 'smooth as butter'.

    I used artist's oils on my Citadel and Ral Patha minis back in the late 1970s and early 80s. It's nice to see the old techniques again, my kids converted me to acrylics in the 2010s but I never could get the build I wanted. Thanks for making an old fart feel relevant again.

  • @SOTMead
    @SOTMead 2 роки тому +3

    "But if you are coming from years and years of acrylics and traditional wargaming techniques, well, your first experiments are going to be tough."
    Understatement of the century and it cannot be emphasised enough. Decades of hardwired techniques will need to be rooted out and unlearned, but if you keep at it, you'll get there. After six weeks of daily practice I finally managed my first 'all oils' model without having to manually force any subroutines. And I *still* have problems if I use acrylic undertones first as in this video.
    Keep at it. Paint every day. Rewatch these tutorials and really *observe* what's going on and what Marco is doing differently. It will pay off someday. And then you can look back at your first attempts with humor and satisfaction.

      It took me 4 tries to get the colours not to just pull into a mid tone. It's well worth figuring out though! I found it tricky to get the thickness of the paint right, that was the key for me. Good luck; once you get it working it's like magic.

    • @simbobcrafts4843

      @@adrianharkin5471 How did you stop it happening?

    • @adrianharkin5471
      @adrianharkin5471 3 роки тому +2

      @@simbobcrafts4843 in the end I experimented with the oils thickness. My mid tone was better thinned down, diluted a bit to make it more like acrylic, but my highlight was better without dilution. If I think about what helped though, as important when blending with my dry brush, was trying to stipple along the edges of the two colours i'd painted on, and wanted to blend. I'd been trying to mix em like you'd wet blend acrylic and it didn't work. A sort of fuzzing, stippling motion between the two colours helped a lot, and cleaning the brush by wiping it off on a paper towel a lot is really important too. Later, I tried some of my thinned paint a bit thicker and it worked fine, but there's defo value in working out the consistency you want to be working at.
      I hope that helps. I had to sit down 4 seperate times but once it clicked it's so worthwhile.

    I painted some wh40k daemons in oils, well....a long time ago started to paint them in oils, never finished cause i dropped the hobby for awhile but yea oils are so smooth and blendy and perfect for warhammer. A tube of one color and a tube of white and black give you infinite blending and shading compared to trying to imitate it with fast drying acrylic. Bonus is its so easy to correct mistakes with oils cause they blend so well for hours after application. The only downside to oils is the 2-3 day dry period, just place them on a shelf and forget about them for a bit hah.

    I started painting less than a year ago, i was amazed with oil paints, so I've been following the Wappel youtube channel, twicht, and even patreon for a while. Some of my best miniatures are a mix of oil and acrylic. Wappel is a master,
    when you look at their twicht and see their quality time results you WOAHHHH. And in his blog he has some amazing minis, most of you can see in his instagram, youtube and twicht are one-day projects. But, I always had the impression that he forgot that some people are beginners. Your oil videos are more beginner friendly i think. Love to wappel, and love to you. Please dont forgot that some people are starting, and maybe paint 4 o 5 days in a month, but we want to learn.

    I had never used oil paints for painting until discovering your channel a few weeks ago with the release of cursed city. Followed along with your guide for painting zombies and after almost finishing 40 of them I feel confident enough to move onto some other models such as the wolves and blood knights in the same range. Thank you so much for your videos!

    I also love how a second layer or filter of transparent oils can make the colors even more interesting.

      I know your comment was posted a year ago, but doesn't that second layer reactivate the first one?

    • @sevencoloredmage8726
      @sevencoloredmage8726 Рік тому +1

      Yes, you don't want to just add another layer on top while the first is still wet. You'll have to let the first oil layer dry over night, with the help of Malbutter or a similar drying accelerator. Then it's safe to paint another oil layer or do finishing touches with acrylics.

    Great video, as always! For those that are worried about drying time; I keep a tube of Malbutter (from Schmincke) handy, add a tiny bit to your paint and it will dry faster, typically dry next day (depending on the pigment obviously).

    Great! A friend of mine gifted me the remains of his oil paints (about 12 tubes of Old Holland, most of them pretty full) because he didn't have the time to paint anymore. So this video comes at a perfect time, since I've been aching to give those a spin!
    An incredible video as always, amazing result and super clear!

    Well, now I gotta buy more oils! I was already eyeing the Scale75 Artist range to "break" a bit from the normal stuff as I do love wet blending acrylics. This will be awesome for sure.
    Thanks!

      Hey Marco, a question for you.
      As I said above I was eyeing the Artist range from Scale75 so I can practice and get better at my favorite method of painting which is with wet blending and the more "artsy" style (which I'm pretty bad at honestly, still kind of new to this hobby). I was going for that range for the more "oil like" blends and drying times, so, it would be a win-win situation to go for some Winsor oil tube set instead? Is the set you link in your description good to start? I already have thinners and everything because I am a scale modeler aswell. Thanks a lot and have a nice weekend!

    The difference between working with acrylics and oil is much like the difference between working with two-component putty and air-drying modelling clay - the former is much less forgiving, albeit it delivers "quicker" results, while the latter benefits immensely from multiple passes with wet tools once you have built a solid foundation.
