      Having just went through this since this past weekend. My older dog wanted nothing to do with the puppy. Lunging at her etc. We had to ease into it. We let them sniff each other through our screen door. Then I had my dog by his collar and has my sister walk the puppy around the house and my dog would bark everytime they passed by. Until after about 30-45 min he stopped barking. So then I started getting closer to the puppy , and they smelled each other face to face. It was very tense but relieving. After that we let them go they just walked around each other and sniffed. For the first day or so my older dog would growl here and there and we would correct him when he did. But when he interacted and didn’t growl or anything we would reward him. Fast forward 3 days later, they are now laying together and walking around. The ONLY issue is I can’t take them out together because my older dog is way too aggressive when it comes to play and my puppy gets terrified. Hoping as she gets bigger they can play fine

    Thank you for sharing this. I have a one and a half year old male Italian greyhound. My dog has acted identically to Suzy with other puppies. Plays well with dogs his size and temperament but acts afraid of puppies. Not aggressive or anything. We are getting a female Italian greyhound puppy in about 3 weeks and I’ve been worried about them interacting. This is helpful because I think he’ll respond well to positive reinforcement. Thank you!

      Hi Joyce, we have an almost 3 year old male chiweenie, and a 12 week old female chiweenie( siblings from different litters) and our boy is just about the sweetest guy. Our new tiny girl is full of energy and sharp little puppy teeth, and our 3 year old pretty much sticks to staying up and out of her reach right now when she’s trying to play with him. He’s started to bark back, telling her he doesn’t want to play, but she just seems like she doesn’t get that message. He is bigger, but almost seems like he’s intimidated by this new tiny puppy. When she’s calm, they will be ok in the same area, sharing a rug by the fire or something- but he just doesn’t want to play with her at all so far....we are not sure what we should be doing to get her to calm down a bit, and get him to be a little less timid.

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому +3

      Hi, Thanks for the response. I am glad at least part of the time when she is calm they can be together. A couple suggestions, Is it too cold to walk them together? When they are walking side by side, you can control her jumping on him. You may already have these things.She needs chew toys and stuffed kongs to help her use her teeth in a good way. No Hide is a good chew. (That is not RawHide). The main suggestion is, when she is trying to bite him and he is growling at her, you step in and remove her and redirect her to a chew toy. when she bites him, she cannot play with him. He should get braver and growl at her. Some adult dogs think they are not allowed to correct a puppy. We always say "now you be nice to the baby (puppy)". Our older dogs get mixed signals. Please do not correct him when he growls and snaps at her. you want him to think it is ok to correct her. also, he needs lots of alone time with you and away from her. Lots of cuddles and love. We want him to think , you believe he is the best. Also when she is in a puppy pen away from him, feed him every time he looks at her. Also praise him. hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing. joyce

      Hi Kate, Here are some suggestions. 1. can you sit in the pen with the puppy and hold the kong to help the puppy to focus on the Kong. Maybe keep a 2nd gate between the puppy and your dog. Then you can toss treats over the gate to your other dog. Keep the distance between them. is there a large size difference between the puppy and your dog. 2. Do you have a 2nd person that can play with the puppy behind a gate so you can be with your dog. 3. Try rubbing the puppy with a towel all over and then use the same towel to rub the older dog. Let the older dog have the towel for a while and then put the towel in with the puppy. Both dogs will get to know each other from the towel. 4. Another suggestion, increase the distance between the 2 dogs. Use treats or dog food to work on luring your puppy to sit and down. Get your puppy very focused on you and forgetting about your dog. Occasionally toss a treat to your dog just for staying nearby. 5. Also if you can carry the puppy, you can carry in a sling and walk your dog.
      It would help to know if your dogs are the same breed or different sizes. let me know so i can give more suggestions. Joyce

      Hi Kate, how many days have you had the new puppy? It takes a little time. Be patient. Because the puppy is so much smaller. I think the puppy will get used to the older dog walking by the pen. Put up the 2nd pen or gate for distance. Feed the puppy when the older dog is in the area. When you cannot be working with the dogs, I would put the puppy in another room behind a closed door so the puppy cannot see the older dog and bark. Let me know how your doing. Joyce

    This sounds exactly like my dog Chispita! I have a miniature doberman pinscher, she's 8 years old. We got her when she was only 4 months old. She was used to living with my other dog, my sweet sweet babygirl who passed away recently (September 5), she was 12 years old, same breed, with some health issues that we were always taking care of with her meds. After that, Chispita started looking bored since she didn't have her best friend to play anymore, sleeping more than she ever did, and I've been struggling too, since I basically grew up with Pepita (the one who passed away), to the point that I considered putting my university studies on hold if not dropping out, even though this is my last semester. My dad got me a 2 months old chihuahua a week ago, I named her Grecia (Greece), and she's full of energy one moment and the other she's K.O. sleeping on the floor (if she's not biting anything and everything). Chispita does all the things that Susie did, especially getting on higher ground where Grecia can't follow her, it can be the sofa, or any of our arms, it doesn't really matter as long as Grecia can't reach her. the little one loves Chispita, all she wants to do is play with her and once she sees how Chispi runs from her she starts to whimper. I'm going to follow the things you said in the video, I'm glad to know that I've been doing some things right. Chispi doesn't growl, bark or bite the chihuahua, she just runs, hides and once in a while whimpers if Grecia does it too.
    This video gives me hope that Chispi will learn to get along one day with Grecia 💚

    We are experiencing this now although our 2 year old Heeler mix is terrified and aggressive when the puppy comes near. We obviously intervene when we see signs the older one may bite. It has been 5 days and we do have a puppy pen and a crate for the new dog. We only have supervised interactions and the older dog is consistently looking for a getaway such as the couch or another room. This video has given me hope and ideas to help. The older dog is reactive and has come a long way she is just afraid of so many things and reacts to sudden movements. Any other suggestions?

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  2 роки тому

      Keep the puppy in the pen and crate that is good. When the Heeler looks at the puppy, praise and give a piece of chicken or cheese. When the puppy is free in the room, make sure the Heeler has a safe place to retreat. Sit with the Heeler and feed really food food as the Heeler watches the puppy on the floor. Keep a leash on the Heeler if you think the Heeler veil will lunge at the puppy. This will take time. Try going for a walk with the puppy in a sling if the puppy is small enough to carry and the Heeler. When will the puppy be large enough to jump on the couch. That is when you will need to be sure the Heeler still has a safe retreat. Also Rub the puppy with a towel and put the towel on the ground with treats for the Heeler to eat the treats and sniff the towel . 5 days is a very short time for a dog to adjust to a puppy especially a dog that is afraid of other dogs. Be patient. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a German shepherd he is 1 year and 8 months. We just recently got a cockapoo who is 3 months. So far our German shepherd continuously follows and sniffs him. At the moment the cockapoo is not really bothering the GSD. But when the cockapoo wants to play or interact, GSD moves back. I have recently noticed that the next day our GSD is getting more comfortable around the cockapoo, when he’s sleeping he also sleeps not too far away. Always visiting his pen. He never runs to another room, he always wants to be around the puppy, but slowly starting not to be bothered such as going to other rooms and relaxing. When the GSD growls when the cockapoo is being too much, shall we allow this? So far we have not forced any interactions and praised the GSD for nicely coming over. What else would you recommend to ensure that a good relationship can develop!

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, it sounds like a healthy good relationship is developing between the GSD and the cockapoo puppy. Slowly the GSD is starting to get comfortable with the puppy. The pen is the best separation between the two dogs to help the GSD to know he is safe and can get away from the puppy and yet stay close enough to get to know the puppy. Praise any time the GSD lays near the pen. When the cockapoo is playing and the GSD growls, immediately remove the puppy if the puppy does not back away from the GSD or roll over on its back or show you that the puppy understood and respects the GSD. Put the puppy in the pen for a few minutes and then see if the GSD comes near the pen to lay next to the puppy. If the GSD. Comes near , let the puppy out of the pen to play. If the GSD goes away and lays in the other room, the GSD does not want to play at that time. The growl is a warning the puppy needs to learn to heed and back away . You can help by removing the puppy. Hope this helps . Joyce

      Basset hound puppy will be hard to carry . Can you get a dog stroller and take many walks. You can scatter puppy dry food for the puppy. Great way to satisfy Basset hound needs and tire out the puppy. Also treat dispensing balls and puzzles. When the puppy is tired, there should be less jumping and playing by the puppy. When the puppy is tired, then let your dog sniff the rear of the puppy. The puppy can be relaxing eating a chew or licking a kong. You can also rub the puppy with a towel and let your dog sniff the towel . Praise and give treats to your dog for sniffing the towel. It will possibly take a few weeks for your dog to relax near the puppy. Sometimes outside is easier for your dog to relax and be around the puppy. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce

      I would give the puppy lots of exercise. Best if the puppy is very tired when he is Near the dachshund. If you can find a larger dog who is ok with puppies. When the 2 dogs are playing , stop the puppy every time he gets too rough. Short time to rest and let the puppy play again. Teach your puppy the correct way to play. The difference in size will make it more difficult to let your dogs play together. Take them on walks together. Let them be in the same area with the puppy on a leash. Ask both dogs to Sit and reward for calm behavior. You can teach both dogs the Mat exercise using raised beds. They can be side by side on the beds. Puppy can also lick Kong as dachshund is in the room walking around. Keep a gate between the 2 dogs when you cannot supervise . Hope this helps. Joyce

      Hi Leslie, sorry for the late response. Is your older dog pomeranian size. If yes, your puppy will be larger than your older dog. Try Having the puppy lick a stuffed Kong and let the older dog come up to the puppy's tail and start to sniff. Keep the puppy busy with the Kong or feeding treats until the older dog has sniffed the puppy tail, rear and a little way toward the shoulder. When you can't sit and control the puppy and your older dog, keep the puppy behind a puppy pen. Everytime your older dog even tries to sniff near the puppy praise and give a yummy treat. Be patient, it will take time with the difference in size. Before you sit down with the 2 dogs, give the puppy exercise to tire out the puppy.
      Let me know how you are doing. I promise i will answer sooner. Joyce

      Hi Joyce, my puppy is now 8 months. I wanted to let you know that with your advice, they have gotten a long a lot better. My puppy is now 3x the size of my older dog. Though they don’t really play besides the occasional tug o war, theyre much better then before. My older dog was like the one in this video, didn’t want to leave the couch and now they both hang out together, walk side by side and my puppy has become very attached to her tiny side kick. Thank you lots for the help!

    This is exactly what my older dog is going through. He’s a 12 year old yorkie, I brought home a new puppy 2 months ago, she’s also a yorkie & she’s 4 months old. She has incredible energy and can’t be in the same room with my older dog or won’t stop jumping on him, my older dog is terrified of her & also gets on top of the couch or the bed to get away. When she jumps to try and reach him he barks at her growls & moves forward as if he’s going to bite her. I don’t want to tell him not to as I know he’s teaching her but I am afraid he’ll actually bite her so I always end up panicking and taking her away. It’s been 2 months and so far I have not seen any real improvement. I am starting to feel guilty for disrupting my old dogs peace. Please any additional tips you may have will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for such a great video,

      Hi Marianne, the best thing is to keep them separated. Continue to Take them for walks together. Make sure your puppy gets lots of exercise. You want the puppy so tired when you have the 2 dogs together .is your puppy the same size as your older dog. Puppy 12 weeks old usually don’t want to fight. They are just clueless and want to play. If you think your older dog will bite the puppy, then keep a gate between them at all times. Give your older dog lots of space. Find playmates for your puppy. Try to find a calm adult dog who will growl at the puppy and not hurt your puppy. Step In and remove your puppy if he is being rude and jumping on the dog. Champ has his moments when he is not calm. The owner is watching him so he does not jump on Suzy. Have patience and give your older dog lots of attention. Hope this helps . Joyce

I recently got a pomeranian x jack russell puppy (Oso) but he is very nippy and like to bite 😬 My three year old pomeranian x chihuahua (Toby) is very shy and is terrified of oso. Oso will see Toby and get really excited, jump and will want to nip and bite in a playful way. Toby does not like this and runs away in a corner or under a chair. Im starting to become really worried. i keep oso in an enclosure in open space so he can see toby calm and relaxed but every time i let them get near each other out of the enclosure my puppy goes nuts and will want to play fight! Keep in mind Toby has never gotten along with other dogs and has always been scared but i had hope with my new puppy.. any thoughts?

      This will take time. Have you tried having the puppy on a harness and leash, giving the puppy a stuffed kong to lick, sit corn with the puppy and turn away from Toby. Put some pillows on the floor as a barrier and just sit there. You can put some of Toby’s favorite treats on the floor and see how close Toby will come to you and the puppy. Maybe the first time not very close, but each time as kong as the puppy is quiet, Toby may come closer to sniff the puppy. Make sure the puppy has lots of exercise and is tired before you sit down. Does Toby like to go for walks? You could put the puppy in a sling and carry the puppy when you and Toby walk like in the video. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce

      Toni, it sounds like your Labrador female is afraid of the puppy. i would put up lots of gates to separate the two dogs. Help the Labrador feel safe. The puppy will not be able to reach the Labrador and the Labrador will begin to relax. Praise the Labrador for even being 3 feet from the puppy. lots of praise and treats for the Labrador for even looking at the puppy. The puppy can be in a puppy play pen with a filled Kong and the Labrador behind the gate. This will be a double barrier. The puppy wants to play with the Labrador as he did with his litter mates and his mother. Feed the labrador for being near the puppy. It will take time to help the Labrador to relax and finally not be afraid of the puppy. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce

      You really need lots of space between the 2 dogs. Baby gates and puppy pen to keep them separated. If your older dog is close enough to reach your puppy and bite your puppy, the dogs are too close. The puppy is clueless. It will continue to get too close to your dog, because it does not know any better. You have to keep the puppy safe and with distance between the 2 dogs, gradually keep praising your older dog for just looking at the puppy. I monitor as much as I can while still trying to let dogs be dogs but the pup seems like he isn’t afraid of anything, my 10 year old will avoid him at all cost, once the pup is close enough my 10 year old will give a warning growl, the pup will back back and attempt to bite his tail, that’s when my 10 decides enough is enough and has to finally snap on the pup (not literally but tries to scare the pup) at times I will catch them smelling eachothers behind but as soon as the pup tries to grab his tail or face that’s when everything goes left

Puppy is just playing and does not understand your older dogs warning to back off. You need to help your puppy understand that barking and biting the dogs tail makes play stop. Hope this helps. We have two older dogs a 7 and 8 year old. One is a pug and the other is a chugg. We got a new puppy (frenchie and short bully mix) very mouthy. The puppy will sometimes latch onto the chugg neck flesh with it's jaws and hold on. The chugg does not react violently and just stands there really still and unsure what to do and waits for us to remove the puppy then the chugg runs off to his crate. The pug on the other hand avoids the puppy completely using the couch. We correct the puppy with verbals and back flipping in front of the other dogs, so they know the puppy is being reprimanded but as soon as we stop the correction the puppy goes for either of the older dogs again. Are we doing something wrong? I started doing the thumb under the tongue and pointer finger under the chin technique and that seems to have had an effect on the puppy biting human hands, body and face. Should I do the same for when he goes after the older dogs? I hesitate to do it when he does it to the older dogs because I don't want to scare it away from socializing and playing with the older dogs in the future as mouth play is essential when older.

    • @DiamondDogTraining

      Hello, the chugg needs your help. Try to keep the puppy on a harness and leash when near the chugg. you can remove the puppy faster when he gets near the chugg. Give the puppy a kong or toy to chew when the chugg is nearby. Keep a gate between the puppy and the chugg and praise the chugg for any glance near the puppy. Frenchie and bully combination is going to be a mouthy puppy. Try lots of chews. raw bones, himalayan chews, No Hide chews to keep him busy. The pug is teaching the puppy by jumping on the couch and ignoring the puppy. Give the puppy a tremendous amount of exercise so the puppy is tired when near the chugg and pug. When you do a back flip (alpha roll) you are teaching your puppy to fight back. Try just removing the puppy for 30 seconds to a minute behind a gate . you are telling the puppy he cannot play with the chugg when he bites his neck. Puppies don't want to be ignored. You can also put the puppy behind a gate for a timeout when he bites you. Management is the key. Separation when you can't supervise closely, exercise for puppy physical and mental and timeouts.

They're both male, and the puppy is basically the same size as the jack russel. Everytime the puppy gets near the jack russel, he starts growling at him and if the puppy touches him he tried to bite him a couple of times. It's weird because we obviously keep giving the jack russel the same attentiontions as we always did, maybe even more, to make him understand that the puppy is never going to replace him.
    I can't really understand wether the jack russel is afraid of the puppy or if he's jealous. The puppy isn't fully vaccinated yet, so we can't take both of them out for a walk, but we have a pretty big garden and whenever they go out, the jack russel looks more calm, he often stays away from him and he wants to go back in the house though. Sometimes, even in the house, the jack russel approaches the puppy of his own free will and starts growling while sniffing him and then goes back where he was before. Most of the time the jack russel tries to avoid eye contact too with the puppy.
    We're super sad and we can't understand why this is happening, considering how the jack russel has always lived with a cat and, for 3 years, with a shitzu, before he unfortunately passed away.
    We'd love to see them playing together, having fun together and sleeping together... ❤

      Give your Older dog lots of attention. Special time together without the puppy. Ask everyone who comes to see the new puppy to always pay attention to your French Poodle before they pet the puppy. Your older dog is acting out because they are stressed. Keep them separated except when you can sit with them and prevent the humping. Redirect the older dog away from the puppy. Maybe there is an odor from the puppy. Try wiping the puppy with a pet wipe. Also the poodle may just be trying to control the puppy and tell the puppy the poodle is in control. A little humping is not bad. Hi Reuben, Try giving the puppy the Kong to lick and sit and pet and praise the older dog for sitting with you. Give your older dog lots of love and cuddling when he can see the puppy behind the gate so the puppy cannot reach him. Have you tried fresh chicken, cheese, hot dogs or another people food. Let me knoe hoe you are doing. thank you, Joyce

    hello. i have an 8 months old shihpoo and just got a 2 months old shihtzu yesterday. different from the video, my older dog is the one who is very active and playing rough with the puppy. my new puppy is a very silent and introverted puppy. i want them to get along, what should i do? my older dog will barks everytime my puppy is in a play pen and attacking her if she's outside of the play pen.

      Hi Alicia, the 8 month old is still a puppy and does not realize how to play with the 2 month old . You have to protect the baby. Time and distance to help the 2 dogs be able to get closer together. Keep a gate between the 2 dogs. You can put a 2nd gate for even more separation. The 8 month old may be jealous. Give the 8 month old extra attention . It will take time . Make sure the 8 month old is very well exercised and tired when the dog is close to the 2 month old. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing . Joyce

      @@DiamondDogTraining thank you very much, i will do it and update how is it going in few months.
      btw why is separating the older dog and the younger dog has impacts to their relationship?

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  2 роки тому

      By separating now and slowly introducing the puppy and 8 month old, their relationship should be better because there was no trauma at the beginning. Give the 8 month old a stuffed Kong to keep busy and see if you can have the 2 dogs next to each other through the gate or when 2 month olds is in a crate . When you can do that praise the 8 month old. Have you watched my video about introducing a puppy to a dog already in the house. That video will help you . I will send the link below.

      Don't be discouraged. It takes time. how old is the puppy and your dog. How long have you had the puppy. Do you have gates and puppy pen and keeping them separated. Tell me more and I can give suggestions. Joyce

      @@DiamondDogTraining thank you for replying. My puppy is 9 weeks, and my dog is 6 yo. I have a gate separating them, so the puppy doesnt enter my dogs main space. We keep them separated, when we take them for walks, we hold the puppy.
      Sometimes the puppy will manage to run towards my dog in the yard during yard time and the dog will grown when puppy gets too close. My dog just acts like his territory is being compromised (which to him it is)
      Its been a week and the dog still doesnt want anything to do with the puppy. Though his behaviour is slowing becoming more relaxed.
      Im worried that because my dog is very territorial that he will never accept the puppy.
      I will try getting a play pen so that puppy can be in the lounge with the dog so cooper can experience being around the puppy more but separated.

      One week is a very short time. 2-4 weeks to help your dog to adjust to the puppy. What is the size difference .

      They can be in the same room if they are separated. Gate, puppy pen. You can sit with your cocker spaniel and pet and praise and give lots of attention and treats while your puppy can be in an enclosure licking a filled Kong. Give your dog lots of attention. We want your dog to think seeing the puppy and being near the puppy is great.

      @@DiamondDogTraining yes the puppy is also pomeranian.. My dog would always come closer to the puppy’s play pen and then he’d hide. It’s a big improvement but I am kind of confused why my older dog is scared of the new puppy..he usually likes playing with other dogs

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому

      The older dog could be scared because the puppy is jumping at the pen in excitement to get close to the older dog. Try taking both dogs for a walk. Do you have a carrier for the puppy. Like a sling to put over your shoulder. This helped the 2 Schnauzers. She walked the 2 dogs together a few times a day. The older dog started to relax and the puppy got used to being with the older dog without getting excited. also give the puppy a filled kong in the pen and when the puppy is calm, sit outside the pen and let the older dog sit with you and see the puppy being calm. If the older dog will venture toward the puppy, lots of praise and give a yummy treat. If that goes well, encourage the older dog to sniff the puupy through the pen. Try to position the puppy that his rear is facing the older dog as the puppy licks the kong. all goes well, try both dogs outside the pen with puppy licking filled Kong and older dog will sniff puppy. Puppies move so quickly. Even though your dog interacts well with dogs, puppies can be overwhelming. Let me know how you are doing.

    Hi I recently got a 9 week old male Pomeranian who is tiny and I already have a 5 year old female shorkie and 8 year old female pug.
    The shorkie is acting strange when I'm stroking or holding the pup she keeps licking her lips wagging her tail and intently staring for a long time.I don't know what to do about this and get them along with each other.
    My pugzu ignores him but the shorkie stares at him for a long time and they both won't eat their food like normal.

      all of your dogs are upset. keep the puppy separated in the puppy pen. Keep a barrier so the shorkie cannot reach the Pom puppy to hurt it. Praise and feed a piece of chicken or something good to the shorkie every time he looks at the puppy. while the puppy is in the pen. aroused tail, licking lips, he is really nervous. He cannot yawn and is getting tense. The pug is doing the best. he is ignoring the puppy which is good training for the puppy.. spend a lot of time with your 2 older dogs. sitting with them and petting and praising them. separately pick up the puppy and move away from the dogs to pet the puppy. give the 2 dogs filled kong or lickimat or something good while you are giving attention to the puppy. feed the older dogs away from the puppy so thet can eat in peace. hope this helps. it will take time to get the dogs to accept the puppy. the shorkie has never seen puppy so everything is so scary. let me know how you are doing. joyce
