  • Jealous dogs are exhibiting resource guarding issues as well as dominance issues. In this video I address this issue for a viewer who has an issue with his new dog. And , I don't think its being handled properly. I believe in an immense amount of structure on all dogs, in particular new dogs. Teaching new dogs that they are not first and that they must fall in line will often times be the best way to prevent fights and other issues between all dogs in the household.

I think this topic deserves more time. I dont think most people appreciate the danger of dog fights and what it takes to keep animals and humans safe in a multi dog family.

Thank you so much for your advice! I just got a rescue dog yesterday and she (some sort of Shepard or malinois mix) was getting jealous aggressive with my female lab. They’re both about the same age. My lab is super submissive and was starting to get scared to even be around the new dog. I was having a breakdown. But this inspired me to change my attitude and be more strict. Both of them seem a lot less stressed and I think the new dog is doing better with the structure change. I’m glade I watched this before anything went wrong or I gave up.

I'm enjoying your content. Even people like me who can train anything still need fresh advice as knowledge is power, especially when you've gone and put your hand up to take the English staffie that was so out of boundaries that no rescue could take him. I put this snarling dog into the back of my wagon and drove around talking to him until he came up and licked my neck through the cage. He'd been used for fighting but took to my cat first off. Once the cat did that I put the gates up and started to introduce him to the resident dog. They fought straight away, but it was more a test of strength. I corrected but didn't separate as my girl is a mentally tough dog, larger and knows what she's doing, and held him in the submission position until i told her to let him go. Took him on a horse trail ride just keeping up with the horses, then friends dogs, then the leash free park for the bigger dogs and he just loved them and now i can take him anywhere. I introduced the chooks which he protects, because they leave scraps behind and sometimes lay an egg outside the nest box. He seems to love his chooks and the broody one sits on him knowing he needs extra love. And if he hears anything from the pen he's straight out and after it. If we can't find Roy, he's in the pen. He hates the rain and it's dry in there. Where the resident dog Sugar doesn't seem to notice it unless its hail. She knows I will dry her. Sorry I could talk all night about training humans to train dogs.

You made the comment about having two females is a disaster and having a male and a female an issue because the female will dominate. Please explain this. I am very interested in this assertion. The frame of the question is not meant to be confrontational nor condescending, I truly want to understand the concept. Thank you for all you do.

We already know the german sheppard is female, and a dominant one at that. He meant a dominant female dog and an older male dog is a no go (in not so many words.) Not /all/ female dogs cant be paired with a male dog. Context.

Two females well structured as well as to males can live perfect together. But if a strife between to females as is the case in the video, they will hold grudges against each other and my cases and friends of mine they can never be together again. Just a week ago a friend has a 5 yr ddr gsd and a 1 1/2 dogo argentino females. Best of friends. One was in heat the dogo he came to pet the gsd: instant fight to the death. Now they cant be in the same yard never.

Crazy. First time I watch your channel. My dogs names are Mia and Goofy. Just started a job at a dog boarding kennel. Long story short, a dog got dumped a year ago. I've been looking for a forever home for her but no answers yet. I was thinking about adopting her myself but she gets jealous and aggressive with other dogs. Just feel like this is some kind of sign that I should at least try maybe

"If you're the resource, you're a little too weak with the dogs." What a powerful statement. That really resonated with me because I have a husky (2 years old, male, neutered) named Memphis. And he is an excellent dog. I take him to training classes with other dogs (he just graduated beginner/intermediate and were starting advanced), we go to the dog park often, and he is just so violently aggressive to other dogs if they get near me. I have tried almost everything. He cant be crate trained because my you could loose your arm and hand trying to get him in there. I've tried warming him up to it with food bowls and treats. But, hes wise to it. Lays on the ground and refuses to move. Hes extremely claustrophobic, his previous caregiver diagnosed. Is there some other way I can show dominance besides obedience training (hes very obedient with all commands except anything to do with the crate) and crate training?

Thanks for that straight forward honest video. Our female puppy is very aggressive and jealous towards our first dog which is a male. She is very jealous and doesn't respond to commands. She is obsessed with our older dog and we are struggling to train her. She does go in a crate after bad behavior but just goes on where she left off as soon as the crate opens. Can you please give more tips how to get through to my new puppy to leave the older dog alone? She is very jealous if we pet our older dog and will start shining and snapping at older dog. Eventually it will turn into a fight if we don't put her in her crate

OH YES! I had Alaskan Malamutes for 48 years - and pack order is CRITICAL. Especially when you drive a small team or keep 7 of various ages without kennel runs. I now have a DSxMalinoisxGSD male (3yrs) and a 9 mo.female Greenland Dog. She is already trying to bully him (and he lets her) so I must frequently intercede. Mostly they play wonderfully, but multiples are a whole other kettle of fish, and not for amateurs or those who take a back seat.

As always your sharing of life lessons and teachings is helping me have a more pleasant experience in training my Malinois. It has brought structure to my families life and continues to point things out, that I sometimes have overlooked. It has truly made me a more rounded dog owner.

Robert, You have explained the issue perfectly.
I am having a similar situation in my house currently . I have a 4 years old female dog. I got another 6 months old female pup . Now the 6 months old pup is 9 months and she becomes aggressive towards my 4 years old female dog. The mistake I did was that I gave a lot of attention to the younger pup ignoring the older female dog. All the while ignoring my First dog. You are right when you say that my loyalty should be towards the first dog. The second dog needs to be thankful that she has a home to stay.
Now that I have done this blunder, How do I correct it?
Can i now establish the structure again?

HELP!!! I have 2 Lhasa apso puppies, I had one for a couple of months and thought it would be nice if he had company. So, I get him a brother. Things have gotten worse over the last 6 months. The fighting is always started by the new guy, who, by the way has grown bigger and stronger than my first dog. He seems extremely jealous, even though I give them both a lot of attention. Today was the final straw, I had to take myittle guy to the vet with a bleeding puncture wound. I have had the aggressive one in a pen, not a crate all day with food, water and a couple of toys. I took him for a walk separately and I'm very nervous about the entire situation. My little guy is so nice, he is sleeping next to the pen, watching his big brother. I will not accept getting rid of him as an option. I made a commitment for life, as I've done with every dog I've had. Never have I had such a bad experience with my dogs, as I have had 2 or three at the same time. Please advise. I'm heartbroken.

Hi Robert, thank you very much for another great video. As many others are wondering in the comments section, in what sense having two females would be a disaster? Was it a specific observation about the behavior of the two dogs that you were talking about, or was it a more general observation? I am worried because I adopted a female GS (who's almost six months now) a couple of months ago and I already have a female pit (who's two and a half years old). So far they get along well, even though the puppy is sometimes very annoying with the pit. The pit only exerts her absolute authority when there is food involved, but other than that, they seem to be just fine. I only hope that this doesn't change when the GS grows. I would love to get your thoughts about living with two females. Greetings from Chile!

Good information! Thanks! I have a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd. Both of them are 9 years old. For the next two or three years I wanted to investigate getting a third dog. I had never had a German Shepherd before my service dog and I cannot imagine my life without one now. I really need to learn about puppies since I have always adopted. However with my new dog that I don't imagine getting for a few years, I really need to do my research and I thought I would start with a puppy so that I can really get it well trained. I so appreciate all of your videos! I cannot tell you how much they have helped ...

So true, you need tp correct your dog when not respecting thw rank if the "family" my dog is trained like to do commands as a robot, i spoil my dog crazily but only when it behaives, if misbehaving thw worst think my dogs knows is a cold bucket of water afterwards locket into the showercabine for 30 min, then it got its punishment and understand its not some to repeat again. Dog got to know its boundaries, if not it will ruin you house amd dominate the household completely

  • @mannyqureshi8512
    @mannyqureshi8512 2 роки тому +1

    Great advice!!
The owner needs to be alpha. Unfortunately most GSDs (especially unaltered females) will often try to get a higher rank in the pack. Crating a female GSD while giving affection to another dog may trigger aggressive tendencies. There will be a constant drama among beta members of the pack unless dealt with swiftly and firmly. These dogs will eventually establish some truce among themselves. A weak nerve dog will give way to the strong and stubborn one.

  • @lilmee7469

That's precisely how I dealt with those situations, whenever a new dog arrived. The late arrival is always last. Even when my little pack were 4 dogs. People would ask: do your dogs get along with each other? Of course, they did! Even three intact females did. Demoting the first dog is high treason.

You might want to consider working with a trainer a couple of times, to help you structure your interactions between the dogs and so you are confident providing firm corrections, but not so harsh that you do not get the results you want. Sometimes just one or two training sessions can be very helpful. The last rescue dog I brought into my home, was not liked by the next latest rescue dog of four other dogs I care for. For the first few days I kept the new one separated from the others with a crate in a room separate from where my others sleep, and in the day, in a separate fenced in area. Then she started walking in a neutral park area with one of my more playful and accepting dogs, both on leash, and slowly, one by one, the other four accepted her. I think having all the dogs sterilized helps a bit, and especially in the first few weeks, being present as much as possible. The crate was great and a refuge, she still like to use it for naps and a sleeping area. it is not a punishment area, but once in a while, if she gets puppy crazy playful, I might get her in it to calm down a bit. I put a big blanket over it so I was like a cave, with the front open, so she can see me when I am at my desk and see the other dogs. it is two months and she is (finally) part of the group. best of luck. Consistency and patience are great friends, I have and continue t9 learn from.

Hi Robert. I just discovered you while searching for help with jealous dogs. We have a 9yo Beagle (Cooper). He's a rescue that we've had since he was 2. Three months ago we rescued another Beagle (Casey, female) who is about 6yo. Things have been relatively fine until a week ago. Cooper is very attached to my wife. He was laying next to her when Casey decided she wanted to get loving as well. When she tried to jump up on my wife Cooper growled and sent a warning to her. She immediately responded by grabbing Coopers ear and and causing a three inch tear in his ear. My wife and I were trying to get her to let go however she wouldn't release and Cooper pulled his head away resulting in the tear. It took multiple stitches and he is currently wearing a cone until the stitches are removed. She seems to be staying clear of him because of the cone. We are concerned about what is going to happen when he gets the cone off next week. I'm going to try to follow your advice in this video and attempt to form a structure for her to let her know her position. When we first got her she didn't seem to know her position. I was taking them to a nature preserve where we like to walk. When I put them in the car, Cooper mounted her and you could see the look on her face that it appeared she accepted that Cooper was the Alpha. She has pretty much respected his position until this incident. Any advice on how to proceed from here? Do you have any videos that can guide me?
    Thanks
    Robert Mushow

What if the two dogs were both born in your home and raised together? I'm not a novice owner and I am having the time of my life with my two boys ! Now granted my personality is that weak personality but I have adopted the confidence with my dog and the attitude of will do this all day until we get it right, knock it off! I tried to even if I have to act be completely confident when I am handling my dogs but this problem is bigger than me and our household if separated right now because the boys have to be separate until I can make it a safe situation.

Thank you so much! I’m getting a working German Shepherd soon to do protection work with, and I am so glad to have this reference. I currently have a female, and the Shepherd will be a male. Do you think this would be ok?

Do you have any videos on aggression on a leash. I have a 9 month old German Shepard that was fine at the dog beach with others but has now become aggressive to other especially little dogs when on walks. Has lots of other friends in the neigh-hood so it is not dogs in general.

So what if my old dog is the aggressive one. And also is misbehaving because he don't want the new dog. My new dog follows him all day long because is a puppy and only wants to be near my old dog even if he is aggressive with him. He stared playing with the new dog and sometimes he is aggressive and he is making a lot of mess at home.

Ive got a very jealous female malinois abt 12 week old now had her since 4 weeks and a gsd mix hes not aggressive with her at all very docile but she is trying to dominate him

  • @ab935

I don't know why people think malinois' are like german shepherds They are more like a high drive terrier (patterdale, jrt) with the trainability of a border collie. I think terriers give off something that other dogs can't tolerate and it's probably true for malinois as well.
What do you think about permanently separating these dogs unless supervised?

I reckon yr right with terriers many dogs hv disdain for them

I have just a few minutes ago passed for a jealous behaviour from my dog ( birdie collie ) 1 year old that was aggressive with my daughter 12 years old. Because I was with him giving him attention and she came to words him also to give him attention too. He did not let her and stack her.
I did not know what to do as it never happened before. My reaction was to say : No !!!! And put him out side in the garden. I did show to him I was not happy.
Could you advise me if I did right … what I should do ?
Thank you very much if you can help me.

So my Rottsky acts like she is "jealous" of my son 7 year old son or resource guarding or whatever it is. She is 8 months old and came from a shelter, we have had her 3 weeks now. I've stated having my son do obedience with her. When me or my wife are cuddling our son the dog tries to lay over him to get to us. What kind of corrections should I give her and should I have my son do the corrections?

People are just dumb. I don’t know why so many people decide to get these power breed without know ANYTHING about dog behavior!!

  • @sophreaknkrissy
    @sophreaknkrissy 4 роки тому

Exact reason for why so many are dumped or put in shelters.. the owners do not have control over the dog. You couldn’t have said this better. Structure and obedience will teach your dogs to respect you and trust you. Dogs are not stupid by any means.

My Shepard doesn’t have any aggression but this new dog (Akita mix) that was Introduce into the family has resource aggression. He never showed any around me but one time I was petting him and the Sheppard came over to say hi and he got upset and attacked her. She is shaken up over it still but what’s the best way to prevent this? I give the most time and attention to the first dog ( shep the most attention.) but when I did start dedicating more time to the new dog I did notice a shift between them so the video helped explain why, thank you for that.

    Yes!!! Thank you Robert!!
I was desperately looking for this kind of information. I just brought home a new German Shepherd 6 six month old and my 15 month old German Shepherd wants to kill him.
I will put in practice this tips.
Quick question, how long should I expect my GSD to act aggressively towards the new dog?
And anything else that I can to ease the introduction?
    Thanks again Robert

I need help with this. I understand you said that it doesn't matter what breed it is. I will need to start implimenting these rules like you instructed. I have a question. My first dog is a sausage dogXLabrador.-he was fixed from a young age. We brought in a PitbullXBull Terrier-not fixed. We have been treating the Pitbull like a king because we wanted to make sure he is the alpha, will it make him aggressive if we start reversing the roles all of a sudden ?

Hi Robert, I rescued my dog about 3 months ago. He’s 4 years old , dingo/lab mix we think. When I’m out with him on walks sometimes he resource guards me. I say sometimes because we can approach people and he’s perfectly friendly but if other dogs or people approach us he starts growling and barking. At dog parks if he’s away from me he’s social and playful but if he’s near me he’s on guard. How can I correct this behavior? I’ve gone to two other dog trainers and they both told me my dog is the way he is and not matter how much obedience he has he’ll always be unpredictable. What can I do to train my dog.

    • @RobertCabralDogs
      @RobertCabralDogs  5 років тому +1

This is usually because the dog doesn’t see you as a sting leader. I’d get into some good obedience training at a club that offers balanced training.

Hello Robert! I have a 7 month old female Malinois with confirm good pedigree, but she is very lazy when it comes to exercise and training, gets tire very fast and very hard head to follow command even when she knows them but just do not want to do them, is it normal this I am very concern if she will still be OK for personal protection training?
