    Oh my goodness that puppy is adorable look at all the kisses he’s giving his dad, gorgeous fluff ball. The adult dog Harley was fabulous that puppy was so bold 😂 well done all. Good advice re supporting the older dog, some people find it amusing when the puppy constantly harasses the old dog which is totally unfair. 🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

    Thank you so much for this video it helped a lot with introducing our new puppy to our 2 year old dog both are female and the two year old is very protective over us and her thing like water bowl and food, So we got new bowls and let the new puppy use it first and our older one was OK with her using it.

    Very informative, thank you!
    Just brought home a 7 wk old female puppy and introducing her to my 14 yr old male and 12 yr old female. They’re lab mix brother and sister born in my house 2 yrs apart. Unfortunately it was the coldest day of the year yesterday, 5 deg F and the puppy has never been outdoors. Incredibly, she’s yet to have an accident in the house even though I could only bring her in my backyard for 2-3 min at a time due to the cold and her small body mass. Warmer today by 30 deg so should be better. I had to introduce in my house but in hindsight I should have brought them to my mothers dog-less house for a first meet but she’s in her 80s so that’s tough. Been doing ok but I’ve been limiting the interactions with gates so the two older can get relief. I did have a couple growls from the older dogs when the pup gets too rambunctious and I told them “no” but I’m going to try your way from now on. Actually the older male seems to be doing the best with her so far.
    I have been limiting the interactions to one on one as I thought two on one might provoke bad behavior with the older two.
    Anyway I’ll be checking out your vids and any suggestions and/or tips from you or anyone with a similar situation would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

    Such an amazing video ! By the way, I have a 5 years old male Baschet-Lab mix who's rarely socialize with dogs. I walk with him once a week, but in my neighbourhood no one lets their dog out on a walk, so it makes it even harder to socialize him with other dogs. There is no dog park near me either, so yeah, it's really hard to find another dog to socialize him with. Yesterday, someone dumped a female Lab (i reckon she's like 2 or 3 weeks old) near my house, so I adopted her. As I expected, I find it so hard for these two to bond. In the first meeting, my Baschet-Lab growled a lot and chased the younger one, pretty much showing a form of aggression. So I had to stop the meeting. This early morning I was really shocked that these two dogs were in the same room, the old ones still growling though. But after all, they seemed to be in a playful mode, I guess? But, yeah, everything changed when my sister intervened by touching my old Baschet-Lab. He started to show aggression and chased the young one and even snapped a bite on her. I was panicked so I had to separate these two. Now they are both in a separated room and I don't know how to teach them to get along with each other. Do you guys have any tip on how I should teach them to get along with? That's seriously gonna help. Thank you :D

      Most adult dogs won't hurt a puppy, but they will often correct them. When they correct them it can look very aggressive. However, if you're concerned about it, wait till the puppy is larger, so he is less likely to get hurt and then follow this process:
      Here's a section from my dog training manual.
      If you're bringing home a puppy and your other dog is good with dogs, then it should be a simple process. Just bring the puppy home and let your older dog see you holding the puppy. Most dogs will not be aggressive to a puppy because a puppy is not a threat. However, some dogs will correct puppies for getting into their space or not respecting boundaries. Often this isn't an issue, but it can start to teach your dog to be submissive. Since I don't like my dogs to be submissive, I don't allow my older dogs to correct puppies when I bring them home. If I notice that the puppy is bothering the older dog, then I'll move the puppy away from the other dog. It also helps to introduce them in a neutral environment, such as the front yard.
      However, I follow a different process if I am bringing an adult dog home. First, I want to make sure that I can walk both dogs on a loose leash. Once I can do that, then I walk both dogs together. One dog on my left and one dog on my right. You can also have a person help with this process. Just be sure a person is between both dogs.
      While I'm walking the dogs, I'm making sure the dogs are not showing any aggressive behaviors. Most of the time, non-aggressive dogs will just walk as if it's a normal walk. They will show interest in the other dog, but nothing to raise any flags. Once I get back to the house, I walk both dogs into the backyard or in the house if no yard is available. By walking around the neighborhood with both dogs it seems to welcome the new dog into the group. Once in the yard I drop the leashes and let the dogs interact. For peace of mind, you can have the water hose ready if the dogs decide that they don't like each other. Spraying dogs with the hose is a safe way to stop most dog fights. This is usually not necessary if you did the walk correctly and watched for signs of aggression.

We are keeping food/water/toys separate for now. Just brought puppy home Sat morn, 5/25, it’s now 5/27 evening. We followed your initial introductory video and that went OK, there wasn’t any major aggression issues from older lab mix. Thank you!

    Hi Nate. REALLY impressed by all your training and your approach to training. I am about to get a new puppy to eventually start SAR training. I have an older Plott hound in the home. In addition to training the new puppy coming into the home, do you have recommended training for the current older dog, for them to be ready to accept a new dog into their established home? I have about 4-5 months before getting the new pup and bringing it home. Would very much appreciate your guidance on this.

I was wondering if you have any tips for training my puppy to stop barking at nearly everything, she also likes to bite people's ankles as they run past and I have tried lots of methods already like distracting her with a toy or taking her away but they haven't work. Please if you have any tips that would be great!!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 роки тому +1

      If the barking is not out of fear, then you can teach the dog a quiet command. The easiest and fastest way to teach quiet is to treat it as a conditioned correction. Meaning, say quiet and then correct your dog with a training collar and leash pop. After only a couple of those, your dog will stop barking or making noises when you say quiet. Once that's the case, then you no longer need to correct after the command. If you would rather not correct, then this is a good option as well: ua-cam.com/video/0vtn8NhofOw/v-deo.html

    I followed this entire process to intro my new GS to my 6 year old female golden retriever, after a day of seemingly ok behavior , my golden now growls at the new guy if he even walks by her. My golden is very submissive with all other dogs but she doesn't seem to like the new puppy. I have the puppy on leash in the house so I have constant eyes on, he just wants to play or go near my golden. Not to sure what to do or how to show the Golden the new pup is not a threat but a new addition and he will be here to stay.

    • @NateSchoemer

    This was informative, thank you. Question; I have an un-neutered male and spayed female mixed Pitbulls, and have recently adopted a little mixed chihuahua female. The little one is of course very energetic and wants to play. My major concern is her getting hurt or worse by him mostly. He has shown aggression towards the puppy and lunges at her occasionally. When I have had her on the floor with him I notice sometimes his eyes get large and intensive (( as in he opens them wider )). I have been letting her run around on the floor while I have him near me and small bits of treats. I will start using the leash technique you showed here. But, do you think the puppy is in danger from one or both of the older dogs? They are both almost 5 years old.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому +8

      It's possible, but most of the time an older dog will just correct the puppy for being too invasive. If you're worried about it, then I would keep them separated. You can also teach the older dog that he can go to a specific place in the house where the puppy is not allowed. This will help reduce the older dog's stress if he knows that he can always get away from the pup if needed. You can do that by following this process: ua-cam.com/video/R-dDY6QPENE/v-deo.html

    I think how it all works out depends on the older dog and the older dogs health and personality. I have a 12 year old coonhound mix who is very chill around other dogs and people. She has some health problems but still loves her food and long walks. I recently adopted a seven month old shepherd mix. Bless the young one's heart,but she was too much for my old girl. My old girl became nervous and would retreat to the bedroom or upstairs and just wanted her peaceful life. She became hesitant wondering where is that new energetic dog. I felt so bad for her. I thought it would work out because my ol girl is very laid back, but the young dog just made her nervous in her own home. I figured it wasn't fair for her to live out her remaining time on earth always in a nervous state, and being woken when she wanted to sleep and she was also playfully jumped on. So sadly i was heartbroken to return the new one to the shelter. I was very upset and sad. At the end of the day, i feel it will work out depending on the older dogs personality, age, health, and emotional state.

    Do you have to do this immediately upon bringing the puppy home, or can you just keep them separated in the house for a day? We're bringing a new puppy home on Saturday and it's a 3 hour drive each way. After 6 hours of driving, it would be nice to have a short break before jumping right into this training, but willing to do so if it needs to be immediate.

    Not everyone can afford a trainer with the new expense of a new puppy. We have -10 degree weather in Minnesota and a ton of snow so even finding a neutral location is hard. We are holding the puppy and letting our dog sniff her and he is not happy at all. I heard this can take over a month but man we are stressed out. I can hold the puppy and my adult dog won’t do much but growl but if puppy gets put on ground he wants to attack her. :(

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому

      First do muzzle training with the older dog for safety, if you have concerns. Then try this process:

    Hey i love the video of yours but i need some help on my case cuz im reaally stressed about this. We have a staffordshire bullterier at home ,hes a male and 13 years old. Recently we got a pup about 5 months old male and bullterrier staffordsire as well. We tried introducing them but we kinda jumped a gun , we showed the pup right away , but our 13 old dog is a bit asocial cuz he almost never had any dog come over to our house. So first thing he does to the pup is try to mount him . He gets really overexcited , starts breathing really fast and his eyes get wiiide . He gives the pup no space whatsoever . Hes always so close to him that hes pushing him on qccident always trying to mount him (he cant do it tho beacuse his back legs are weaker , he has some trouble walking , something to do with his old age) so its been three days now and idk what to do . Today the little guy kinda jumped on him .. i couldnt tell if it was agression or what but he pushed the old dog prettt hard that made him hit the shelf and he got afraid of the younger dog.. so i really dont know what to do and i have mixed feelings .. (ps. The old dog is still really invasive and hes tryun to hump him.) Any advice would be helpful . Thank you so much.

Currently all I have now is my chow chow she was raised as a puppy with other dogs. she's 9 years old this month she has always been around other dogs but I still in the back of my mind worry since what happened to my Maltese. Any tips on how to calm my own nerves for when I introduce them? I already knew how to do a greet but it obviously didn't work before... The husky is an outside dog and I had them see eachother through the glass door with it slightly cracked as neither dog is able to reach through. Normally the hair on the back of my husky will raise when she sees another dog but thankfully with the puppy she seemed to get excited like she wanted to play. Excitement as in when she sees you pick up a ball to play fetch or when you grab her leash for a walk. The puppy however growls and barks a lot and runs away and hides as the husky pounces towards the glass. When we tried introducing them the husky was extremely excited and sniffed the puppy a little but then nipped at his back foot causing the puppy to screech. I think she just startled him. But I am extremely nervous about them meeting. Any tips would be greatly encouraged.

      Here's a section from my manual that I think will be helpful.

    While this is great, you obviously have very well behaved dogs, is there a playlist of videos showing what to do when each step fails and then how you turn it around. Smooth is always great, rough is where the stress lies.

    I’m watching this vid since I’m getting a new little female havense puppy and I’m a little concerned about introducing her to my older female family dog she’s a chihuahua min pin mix so I was wondering about some in put about that I don’t know how chihuahuas and havanese puppy’s react (my older dogs name is angel by the way we haven’t named the female havanese yet) . I really want them to hit it off with one another and not have an incident where they have to be separated I doubt my adult dog will attack a puppy but I’m still worried a little this video should help me find a good way to introduce them to one another.
