For a variety of reasons, if you picked up a new Chromecast with Google TV you may have skipped out on setting up the TV controls during your initial out of box experience. I know I did initially (we unboxed and set up on camera, so I bypassed that part) and had to figure out how to go back and get our office TV under the control of that sweet Chromecast remote that came in the box. Rest assured, the process is simple once you know where to look. Let's go over it, shall we?

You click TV and get a list of brands. Mine goes back to the previous screen to choose TV again.

If you factory reset your Chromecast it should be fixed. I had the same issue and this resolved it.
Anyone else finding the remote jittery? Like sometimes it won't do anything after a click and other times it'll act as if you've clicked it loads of times and basically scroll even though you just clicked it once?
So my remote was working for volume & on/off until today . I tried the way you showed but the volume not changing or the off button or the input. My app icons looks a bit different. Could it be a chromcast auto update screwed it up?
Never mind, even though the remote works for viewing it needed new batteries for the vol/ on-off functions. Thx

Can you control more than "power, volume and input" on your tv? Can you switch "normal" television channels?
I just discovered that I can at least pause UA-cam videos by tapping the button in the middle of the wheel on the remote.

Is there a way to get the remote to control the 'menu' button to display settings? I want to be able to adjust brightness and things!
I hope they improve the support over the buttons. The remotes will have problems with TVs with an input screen as the button will only load the screens and work as scroll. The remote can't actually select the sought after input.

I click on TV and it just takes me back to the add device option, doesnt pull up a list of tv brands
Bonus: if your Chromecast is powered independently from the TV, you can use the assistant button even when the TV is turned off. Just give the command and the TV will automatically go to what you want to watch.

I have a hisense A6 series. When i click on "add new" and then click on "TV" nothing happens, no tv brands show up. What can I do? I disabled CEC both on tv and Chromecast.

You just solved the last bugaboo I had with this device - being able to rely on its remote for everything associated with the hardware. I no longer need to use my Logitech remote to turn things on and off. So I thank you. More importantly this is maybe the third or fourth video I've seen of yours and I really appreciate your no nonsense, straightforward, clear and unencumbered information. No backstory or long lead-ins or comparisons just what I need to know and why. So thank you again.

It would be good if the directional buttons also could work with IR in different sources so then it truly would be the only remote you neeed.
When I click select device and then choose TV it doesn't open a menu to pick a brand / device.
Somehow my TV remote can control the Chromecast, though, just not the other way round. Anyone got a fix?

I've found that using the Chromecast remote to control my TV volume isn't as nice I'd imagined it would be. In particular, it makes casting a second-class experience, as I can't control the volume from my phone. It's especially bad when using the new Chromecast in an audio group. So I prefer setting Volume control to Chromecast volume, which enables the Chromecast's internal volume control, just like how Chromecast devices have always worked.
Piry not all TVs are aupported. I have a Blaupunkt Tv that isnt listed in yhe Chromecast. The popular workaround of selected a Bush TV didnt work either. No CEC or IR blaster for me.

I have reset my remote, held down the home while putting in the batteries. And pushed the button on the device to pair. My remote won’t pair and the light on the remote stays in the pulsing mode FOREVER!!!!!! Ahhhhh
Oh. And I also held down the back and home at the same time. It still won’t pair and the light won’t turn off on the remote. Any ideas?

I got a new remote and paired it to the Chromecast but I’m getting none of those prompts to pair my remote to the TV. I basically get a spinning circle then it says try again. Any idea how to fix that?

Hey I have a TCL Roku tv I just got the Google tv I love it but unfortunately I can't use the left, right, up and down controls on the remote on my TV home screen. When I power on my tv I then have to go left to be able to access the google tv input to access google tv, I also cannot scroll through inputs as you can in the video. I'm wondering if this is just my tv or am I missing a step and there is a way to control this?
I get to the TV menu and it never shows the brands, just goes back to "add device". Is this still supposed to be working?

I don't get it.. The setup takes you through all this, honestly what purpose does this video serve? This video was not helpful and was hoping it would help for people who have older tv's.. I assume this is an old video. As there is a 3rd option than CEC... but its not selectable..

ok, nice. But I still do not understand why the remote control that comes with Chromecast TV, works fine with Netflix & Amazon but refuses to work with YT, when I start YT-videos from my Chromebook??? 🙁
The remote control physical rounded bottom is the worst design ever. It always slip and fall on the floor!
And the buttons are too sensitive! It can easily pressed unintentionally. Please give us a stable flat remote and normal button design! I really hate the remote control!

I have no idea who at Google designed this remote but they need to be fired. This looks and feels like a toy that a woman would use. What a horrible design. It's like trying to hold an ice cube between two fingers. Now I've got to find a way to make it so it doesn't slip out of my hands.

i started to write a constructive note for others to read.....but then my Google web browser crashed.....lost all the comments. 1. remote too small for big hands. 2. Volume buttons so tiny and small....hard to adjust. 3. Remote will NOT sync with my Bose sound bar. 4 Wheel at the top of the remote is erratic when scrolling. And you have to be very precise when going up, down, left, right...or you end up in another app or row in Google TV. 4. Remote turns the TV off, but Google TV stays on. From where i was researching, you have to literally have to delete your Google account for a complete sign out. 5. If you have to reset your Chromecast...….you have to re-input all the data again...WTF....including all the logins for MAX, DIsney+ , and any other premium channels. 6. And you wasted space to include buttons on the remote for UA-cam and Netflix...maybe those could have been the volume buttons. But Google owns UA-cam....so go figure. I'm done ranting.......probably best I send this to Google instead of UA-cam......oops, Google owns the site I'm typing on........
I didn't even realize there was a volume control. Duh! My menu appearance was a little different, but I was able to figure it out. I also found that I can pause UA-cam videos by tapping the button in the middle of the wheel at the top of the remote. Cool!
Is it also possible to control the Android TV OS inside your smart TV? I have a 2016 Sony with Android TV and my remote has some problems with going up and left. Would love to replace the remote with a Chromecast remote.
I have a Westinghouse and went through the setup just like you showed and it refuses to work.

I have a Panasonic tv and Samsung soundbar, I can turn on/off individually but at the end power bottom can be program to only turn on/off tv or soundbar but not both! Is there a way for me to choose both devices when setting the power bottom? I have Auto(CEC), TV(CEC), Chromecast, Samsung Soundbar (IR), and Panasonic (IR). I only can pick one!!! No problem doing that with Amazon fire stick!!!
I cant change the input. I can open it, but not move the pointer so I can select a different one. Has anyone Else had that problem and if so did you manage to fix it?
Just keep pressing the input button until the input you want is highlighted.
Hi, I have this device, I really like it, but I noticed that there is a clicking sound when pressing the down portion of the directional pad on the remote.(Clicking on the remote not on the TV) Beyond that, the device is very solid, but I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how I can fix that clicking sound on the directional pad. Hello, thank you for the quick video tutorial. I added the remote (went through all those steps) but noticed that the mute-button doesn’t work. Example: watching UA-cam TV and need to mute the audio and nothing happens 🤷♀️

Assuming you have an Tv app installed that after getting in you need to work with 1-9 digit to get into some channels - how would you do it? can you do it from the google controller or you suggest to work the the CEC feature and the default controller comes with the TV brand?
Hi, can I use this to control my Sony x90j? Do I need to buy anything else either from the remote? Does it require the Chromecast even tho I have android tv in the Sony tv?
This helped a lot. After LG flat panel died, I replaced with Hisense panel and a new Denon AVR. Unfortunately the 9 codes for the Denon volume control did not work. I tried the Auto CEC and sure enough I can now control the volume on the Denon AVR. Wife is loving having only one remote.

Thanks for the video, switched from CEC to IR. I noticed you also had a chromecast ultra plugged into the same tv. When I do this the chromecast with google tv flickers so I can't keep the ultra plugged in. Do you experience the same thing?
If you press and hold the UA-cam button on the remote you can set up that button to default to either UA-cam or UA-cam TV when it is pressed. The factory default is UA-cam. I switched mine to UA-cam tv. This is really useful if you're using chromecast mainly for UA-cam tv.
