With a $60 AUD difference between this and the Chromecast 4K, or $100 AUD difference between this and the Chromecast HD, I don't think it'll sell well, at least initially, except to those who want the latest tech and don't care about price. The prices are $159 AUD for this, $59 AUD for the Chromecast HD, and $99 AUD for the Chromecast 4K, plus the cost of a HDMI cable and Ethernet cable, if you don't have either already.

I wish cable TV and IPTV providers, such as OrangeTV in Europe would adopt this as their main box. Having some garbage like the Arris vip 4302 is ridiculous in 2024.
Most IPTV Providers are basically broadcasting their "legally" obtained media on a website/portal URL. Those garbage boxes have OSs that allow user to define their own portal URL. Google TV or any consumer product doesn't give that functionality. That's why these boxes cannot be adopted.
Right, there are third-party solutions that offer better specs for less than half the price. Although I'm sure this will be discounted, but there's definitely a Google tax. In this sense, it reminds me of something like the pixel stand. It's really not all that impressive, but it looks nice. And if you're super interested in first party Google hardware, I'm sure enthusiasts will buy it. But I was happy you're just finding a third-party wireless charger for 20% the cost
Why would Bluetooth connectivity be a consideration for putting this behind your tv? Bluetooth will work fine regardless of whether this is behind you tv.
You'd think, but the remote on the Chromecast version can be finicky depending on the placement and size of the TV. I think the bluetooth connection is just underpowered.
Hello from Sweden! I just ordered two more "Chromecast with Google TV (4K)" before they are sold out. I want to be able to hide them behind the wall mounted TVs in my house. This new streaming box is most certainly a great product in most ways, but I think one of the great features with the Chromecast is that they can be placed behind the TV. And the price is very good now.
We have an old TV with an old Chromecast attached to it, we use it for streaming only so this device seems to be exactly what we need to extend the life of our TV, since it's only my wife that uses it and she is half blind the 4K isn't really needed but the easy handling and remote will be a blast for her
I don't agree with your point that it cant be placed on the back of the tv. I plan on doing just that in case I purchase it. Bluetooth connectivity does not require a straight line of vision like infra red.
You left out a lot of important info in the comparison with the Shield TV. Does it support passthrough over HDMI with TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD MA, DTS:X, etc.? Does it have sample rate matching over HDMI with PCM output? What's the raw performance with video playback in comparison? Etc...
I have the old Chrome cast with Google TV and have bought the Google streamer for my brother for Christmas. I don't really see much difference for double the price. Ok Mine is only HD and Google streamer is 4k, but not big deal for a HD only TV anyway. Both work really well.
Bought one as an upgrade to Chromecast with Google tv. The new remote is a worthwhile upgrade. It's snappy and some of the new features are interesting. I took my old Chromecast and moved it upstairs to replace my Chromecast ultra so that was an upgrade as well. So far I really like it. It's not a huge upgrade but it is still a nice upgrade.
I have Google photos and a Google doorbell so I'm tempted to get one of these for those features. I have LG OLED TVs in the house and they're easy to use and what we're used to with a similar experience across the multiple TVs. Not sure if it's worth it to start adding the Google TV Streamer to the mix.
Interesting design choices, why have a button on the back with no label or text, I get the clean aesthetic, but someone has to know to reach around the back of their device and know that button makes their remote make a sound. Does it also have other functions like pairing the remote? Someone not tech savvy would never know to press it.
I wonder why hardware specs are so important in the Android world. Last time I used a Chromecast with Google TV it was fast enough and worked flawlessly for me. So why upgrade? Just for a bit speedier hardware? If your device has a problem or flash is full an upgrade will be warranted, though.
The tube shield has to be restarted once in a while. I am replacing it with this. Unless the upscaling looks worse I plan to keep it, got the pre-order shipping notice recently.
I currently use Google Chromcast With Google TV 4K. While I like the home app intergration I want to be able to interact with it without having to use my remote just like how I interact with my Google displays. Another dealbreaker for me is you can’t talk to a person at your front door. It seems like Google forgot to put a mic in the hub.
With the nvidia shield, you can plug in a hard drive or ssd with your own movies and games to play on the nvidia shield. This video does not mention anything about plugging in a usb c dock and use a usb hub to expand the storage with an external storage device with the newer google streaming device, the chrome cast devices can already expand the storage when using a usb c hub from the chrome cast usb c port.
We mention in the video that the sole USB-C port is exclusively for power. There is no way to add additional storage to the Google TV Streamer, which we point out as a drawback at the end of the video.
I'm considering getting one. I've got a relatively recent Sony Bravia running on Google TV however it appears that it will not be getting the Android 14 update that was previously advised. The storage space is also very small and it's starting to complain about lack of space with only a few streaming apps, youtube etc... on it.
I really think they should include a short white HDMI cable and a short white Ethernet cable. Also I have Sony Google TV and Apple TV 4K 128gb. So what would I do with this? With an USB-A ethernet adapter I can get 1gb ethernet to my Sony TV although the dedicated ethernet port only supports 100mb. The only thing I'm missing from my TV is larger app storage (which I obviously have on my Apple box) and that favourite app button.
Do you have to hard plug it into your router like you would a hub for your light bulbs per se? Or is it wireless connectivity to be able to use as a hub for your lights and other things that require a hub from that manufacturer?
Is this as good as the newer ONN 4K pro? That has a better looking remote and it can read 2TB+ SSDs, for "giant slide shows". The Onn is only $50, with 32GB internal storage, etc..., and is really popular. I gave away my new Apple TV after purchasing the ONN since Apple couldn't work with an external SSD loaded with pictures, and since it's slideshow is so poor (can't do video, titles, etc.).
I don't think asking if people in the Apple eco-system will want to leave Apple TV or consider Google TV Streamer instead. The real question is would I pick this up over the new Roku Ultra or any other non Apple based streaming device. As a Pixel user who is 100% invested in Android and its eco-system... I will never consider Apple TV or anything Apple based. With that said I would love to see the new Roku Ultra vs Google TV Streamer comparison video. Thanks.
Yes, I think so. Sony doesn't usually put the best processors in its TVs, so you're going to see much, much better responsiveness with this. Also, Sony sometimes has problems with audio and video codecs, which could negatively affect your streaming experience. This is definitely better! You just need to decide if it's worth $100 :-)
This is IDEAL for people like me. I will be using it on a non android OS TV (samsung) but i'm also going to be using it for cloud gaming so the ethernet port is a GREAT upgrade (for me).
The reviewer is incorrect about some of the features on competing devices. I can say hey, Roku, find my remote, and there’s a button on the device to signal the remote control. That exists on the 2019 model, but I haven’t checked the one purchased 2021/22.
I'm considering this, but I am also considering the Apple TV. I have a PS5 though, so most of the stuff I want to stream are already on there, plus I can put my CD's and DVD's in there to watch at any point too.
Seems like the perfect upgrade to my chromecast in the livingroom. My router is nearby, but I'm currently getting some stability issues on multiple streaming services (resolution dips). Going through ethernet might help. The chromecast could then be moved to my bedroom tv, which currently doesn't have any streaming functionality, I've just been connecting my microsoft surface to it via a usb-c hub
You mentioned the Google TV Streamer is much better than the Roku Ultra but gave no specifics. How about a comparison video? Since Roku devices have about 50% market share you should have included them.
I’ll stick with my Chromecast. The slight speed boost isn't worth it since I don’t spend much time in the menus-I just pick what I want to watch and then watch it. The 'find my remote' feature is the only one I find even remotely (pun intended) useful.
It checks all the boxes to replace my nvidia shield. 4k, dolbt atmos, and find my remote! The shield still has a far superior remote with this shake to light and ergonomics but now I can move that one out to my garage TV.
I have two 2017 model Nvidia Shield TV and currently building a Dolby Atmos & Vision sound system so i believe this will be enough of an upgrade needed to go that direction. So definitely will be buying this
I have never bought a new TV, always used for free or cheap. I only get the pixel phone on sale. I have the first gen Chromecast I bought at a thrift store for $12. I think it would be cool to upgrade but only because I've been getting a message that Peacock is going to stop working on the 1st gen and UA-cam is starting to lag on longer videos!
You recommend an upgrade because of hardware?? The media experience is the same. You will still watch the same videos on the device. A switch won't change the experience unless you really need a matter hub.
What's also never mentioned is all the eventual headache that will come with an current Gen Apple TV 4k for people who aren't wrapped up and invested heavily with Apple Products and just want a good streaming device. They are better off with this at the end of the day.
.Onn 4K from walmart is still a worthy competitor given the needs of your typical streamer. and its only $50. It has ethernet, andextra usb connection as well. Does it have find my remote?? I dont recall
I have a Samsung S95D tv, got a couple of questions: - what's the advantage using this rather the Tizen OS - if I use this will it make use of the processor on the TV to improve image quality? - does the image quality of streaming services better/same/worse if using this rather than the apps from the tv? Thanks
I think Google made this step to eventually compete with nVidia. If you want to play serious games with serious graphics, then you need something more powerful than the regular Chromecast and that probably also requires a bigger formfactor. However I don't see why the smaller Chromecast wouldn't be able to exist alongside this new product as well. Google would then have a product line-up that serves each customer based on their needs. Because some customers might want to game and need more powerful hardware, while others just want to stream movies and tv series and are fine with the smaller Chromecast.
Well I don’t really know at the moment, firstly I need to upgrade my television so there is better input from the device’s processor, but I bought the Google Chromecast 4K four years back, because I wanted the Google Stadia ecosystem, but now that is defunct and Google Streamer may or not outlast. For the time being I might as well switch things up and go with Nvidia Shield Pro, since it’s more stable than the Google Streamer, but the streamer is updated with Threads / Matter etc for iOT integration. We are still not there yet, it’s an early adaptation for the tech savvy modern era.

I just cant see spending $100 on this
Right, there are third-party solutions that offer better specs for less than half the price.
Lmao
Why? Same price as a roku ultra.
@@JimmyDThing I wouldn't pay $100 for a Roku Ultra.
@@wisforwumbo6408 so what would you pay for a device?
Why would Bluetooth connectivity be a consideration for putting this behind your tv? Bluetooth will work fine regardless of whether this is behind you tv.
You'd think, but the remote on the Chromecast version can be finicky depending on the placement and size of the TV. I think the bluetooth connection is just underpowered.
CANT WAIT to get them , I pre-ordered few of them in hazel colors month ago ...cant wait to get them in weeks✌👌🙌🥂
CCwGTV sucked after the Android 12 update. It used to be fast but now everything is slow and laggy to the point where I switched to a Fire TV 4K Max.
Cool review. It costs twice as much as the Onn TV 4K Pro, is it worth the extra $50?
Finally ethernet is 1 Gbps :)
We have an old TV with an old Chromecast attached to it, we use it for streaming only so this device seems to be exactly what we need to extend the life of our TV, since it's only my wife that uses it and she is half blind the 4K isn't really needed but the easy handling and remote will be a blast for her
Just an fyi you can change the remote pad on the Google app to a different control pad so it is as easy to use as the remote
Should come in black and
You can change the swipe pad on the Google Home remote to the directional one like the physical remote
I don't agree with your point that it cant be placed on the back of the tv. I plan on doing just that in case I purchase it. Bluetooth connectivity does not require a straight line of vision like infra red.
Mine is behind the tv with no issues. I had no space on my console for this. Also spigem has a case that sticks the device to your tv.
@@bradenclaringbold4327could you please attach a link?
You left out a lot of important info in the comparison with the Shield TV. Does it support passthrough over HDMI with TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD MA, DTS:X, etc.? Does it have sample rate matching over HDMI with PCM output? What's the raw performance with video playback in comparison? Etc...
I have the old Chrome cast with Google TV and have bought the Google streamer for my brother for Christmas. I don't really see much difference for double the price. Ok Mine is only HD and Google streamer is 4k, but not big deal for a HD only TV anyway. Both work really well.
Connects to lightbulbs but not to my toaster: Hard Pass
I've yet to see any demo that showcases this is actually being smoother/faster.
Just got it, i was surprised it supports all the dts formats even dts:x
Thanks, good compressed information.
The AV1 decode support is an under appreciated addition to this over the Chromecast.
Yeah. This is compelling for future proofing.. Not even the Shield supports AV1.
The Chromecast with Google TV HD also supports AV1 afaik.
Do a side by side comparison showing the performance improvement
I get 😁mine this Friday. And it's the Hazel color 🔥
Thank you for the great review. It was very helpful.
I have a question, does it match the content frame rate?
Hi, have you tested the dolby atmos pass through with your yamaha receiver?
With the nvidia shield, you can plug in a hard drive or ssd with your own movies and games to play on the nvidia shield. This video does not mention anything about plugging in a usb c dock and use a usb hub to expand the storage with an external storage device with the newer google streaming device, the chrome cast devices can already expand the storage when using a usb c hub from the chrome cast usb c port.
I think Google said you can use the USB c port for expansion
We mention in the video that the sole USB-C port is exclusively for power. There is no way to add additional storage to the Google TV Streamer, which we point out as a drawback at the end of the video.
@@AndroidAuthority Looks like sticking with the chrome cast is needed to expand the storage with an external storage device.
@@AndroidAuthority try it ,either it Works or not
@@AndroidAuthority but that's not true. People on Reddit already confirmed that TV streamer is working with USB hub same as Chromecast.
Really good summary video C. Scott Brown! Good stuff! I appreciate ur honesty and critiques on this android device.
The Google recommendation algorithm is pretty much the entire experience with these devices. It would be nice to see it on a Shield 2 or something.
I'm considering getting one. I've got a relatively recent Sony Bravia running on Google TV however it appears that it will not be getting the Android 14 update that was previously advised. The storage space is also very small and it's starting to complain about lack of space with only a few streaming apps, youtube etc... on it.
Thanks for this review. I was wondering if this would be an upgrade from my Shield. Now I know I should stay with the Shield.
I see how they took some notes from the Roku Ultra with the find remote feature
Do you have to hard plug it into your router like you would a hub for your light bulbs per se? Or is it wireless connectivity to be able to use as a hub for your lights and other things that require a hub from that manufacturer?
😍🤗 - Nice! I love that the Google TV Streamer support Matter smart devices and AI
Thanks.
Can't wait for this to go on sale!
Thank you for the review, ? Though is it worth it getting one if i have Sony Bravia from 5 years ago with Google Tv already?
Yes, I think so. Sony doesn't usually put the best processors in its TVs, so you're going to see much, much better responsiveness with this. Also, Sony sometimes has problems with audio and video codecs, which could negatively affect your streaming experience. This is definitely better! You just need to decide if it's worth $100 :-)
@AndroidAuthority thank you, I think you're right on this info. It's a must purchase!
Replaced my 1st gen chromecast stick with this. It streams audio on my excellent pixel buds pro. That alone is worth a lot. Really good product
Where did you get that painting in the background? It's nice.
This is IDEAL for people like me. I will be using it on a non android OS TV (samsung) but i'm also going to be using it for cloud gaming so the ethernet port is a GREAT upgrade (for me).
I don't think it being tucked behind a 1 cm panel is going to affect Bluetooth or Matter stuff...
I have a PS5 though, so most of the stuff I want to stream are already on there, plus I can put my CD's and DVD's in there to watch at any point too.
no USB port... may I transfer some Videos from my windows computer to the inbuilt storage?
It has a USB-C port, which you could connect a hub to
Seems like the perfect upgrade to my chromecast in the livingroom.
What happened to all the old Chromecast? Did they all get bricked now that this thing is out? Or can you still keep using your old Chromecast?
That 'find my remote' voice command alone makes it worth the price of admission
So definitely will be buying this
Great just bought another Google TV yesterday and now this comes out. Well well well.
Can you still control it with a phone or tablet rather than the remote control ?...
Yes the onn 4k pro streaming box does have find my remote feature
I have a Samsung S95D tv, got a couple of questions:
- what's the advantage using this rather the Tizen OS
- if I use this will it make use of the processor on the TV to improve image quality?
- does the image quality of streaming services better/same/worse if using this rather than the apps from the tv?
Thanks
I ordered it also so let's see what it looks like thanks for the video
but wasn't the doorbell thing a feature that they advertised?
Does it allow Picture-in-Picture, for example, watch Netflix on main screen, and having a small PIP with a camera feed from google home?
Didn't the man just told you, you have no interactions, Just interruption of the pop up at the door bell
Didn't know about thread and matter - great catch !
Can you lock the adult profiles yet ?
I won't be upgrading to this. I still have my Shield Pros, but due to lack of updates, I've swapped to using an Apple TV 4K as my main streamer.
Great vid! Thanks so much, would be great to know what processor is in it, like does it trump my 2019 shield tv?
I think Google made this step to eventually compete with nVidia. If you want to play serious games with serious graphics, then you need something more powerful than the regular Chromecast and that probably also requires a bigger formfactor.
However I don't see why the smaller Chromecast wouldn't be able to exist alongside this new product as well. Google would then have a product line-up that serves each customer based on their needs. Because some customers might want to game and need more powerful hardware, while others just want to stream movies and tv series and are fine with the smaller Chromecast.
What is the difference between this new gizmo and Roko ultra ???
Well I don’t really know at the moment, firstly I need to upgrade my television so there is better input from the device’s processor, but I bought the Google Chromecast 4K four years back, because I wanted the Google Stadia ecosystem, but now that is defunct and Google Streamer may or not outlast.
For the time being I might as well switch things up and go with Nvidia Shield Pro, since it’s more stable than the Google Streamer, but the streamer is updated with Threads / Matter etc for iOT integration. We are still not there yet, it’s an early adaptation for the tech savvy modern era.
