- All sounds on this track [ except drums ] are Oberheim Matrix 1000.
I'm selling an Oberheim Matrix 1000 on Ebay so I thought I'd do something to show what a great bit of kit it is, nothing that's going rock anybodys world but shows a few of the sounds on the unit.
No expense spared on this video, spot the underwear.
Hey @jez770 - I work mainly inside the computer so Midi boxes don't really go with my workflow, I sampled the Matrix to death before selling as it's full of great, sounds. Although sampling doesn't sound quite as good as the real thing it's still sounds good enough I think. Thanks for listening.
This Oberheim kit was way ahead of it's time, still sounds pretty fresh. Lovely video, thanks for posting! :o)
Thank you for the kind comments.
90% of it was overdubbed one pass at a time [ I don't even know if the Matrix 1000 is multi-timbral? ] into Logic 9, last 10% is Matrix sounds that I sampled into the EXS24 sampler and triggered via MIDI.
Thank you for the kind words.
To record things I use a Mytek 96 AD and for playback I use a Motu PCI424 with 2408 Mk2, 24 i/o.
CRAZY MUSIC FANTASTIC SOUND.GENIAL IDEA.
It was all recorded into Logic Pro 9, to be honest I can't remember exactly but for stereo-izing stuff I regularly use the 'spreader' or the 'stereo spread' plus a bit of Sound Designer or PSP42 delay.
great composing and nice riffs man. you recived 3 dislikes from 3 different trolls.
yeah man!
Brilliant!
This film was not directed by Michel Gondry, just wanted to clear up any confusion.
Sweet! Best matrix 1000 demo on youtube. I'm not a fan of cycling through patches and hitting keys at random.
I like the variety of sounds used, really showcases the unit's capability. Still very usable today apparently. I'm sure this will sell a few other units as well. :)
Adrian G This is definitely a great demo, but I also like demos that cycle through many assorted patches. But I don't like them "hitting random keys" either. I like when they play some chords &/or little riffs, for each patch.
dat matrix bass
Don't have one as of yet. Just bought an Oberheim MC1000 76-key controller and thought it would be cool to wire it to a Matrix1000 and also an Obie OB3-Squared organ module. Add a Kurzweil PC2R rack unit that and I'd be all set! Great all-round pro sound palette in three little modules. It would just be nice to create some of my own patches for the Matrix and I'm not sure if it's hard work or not or how easy it is to find a good editor.
could totally be wrong on this, but i may have been the guy to buy this from you. i remember seeing these pictures in the listing, could of been a different one, but i got a lot of deja vu from it and it's the same year i got mine. had a lot of fun with whichever mine is, but it was pretty disappointing to run into all the kinks with software programmers so now i stick to my juno-60 since i can't stick to patches. hopefully be able to buy a hardware programmer some day.
I don't have a Matrix 1000 but was thinking of getting one. Is why I was inquiring. Editing is nice, even though the stock patches seem great. I am getting an Oberheim MC1000 controller and was thinking about using Matrix1000 + Oberheim's own OB3 Squared organ module with it. Then maybe a Kurzweil module to play role of main ROMpler. Now I use FantomS and Kawai K5000. The K5000 could leave someday to make room for a Blofeld keyboard, but then again I like the K5000 alot. One never knows.
you have good soundcard but this shit sound as heaven
You should never have sold the Matrix. You will regret sooner or later.
wish Id never sold my Martix :(
love your glide bass at 2:18. fat and buttery!
Sadly I don't have the Oberheim any longer only the sample bank I made from it which gets used quite a bit.
In the short time I had it I didn't try editing it from a computer unfortunately. Do you edit yours with a computer?
Does anyone know which preset is used for the bass in the beginning? I wouldn't mind putting that on my Matrix 6r.
I don't know why everyone else couldn't demo this cool synth the way you did. Have you ever tried editing patches from a PC?
this is really good! what soundcard are u using btw?
anyone try to make an analog kick drum sound with it? or does it have a sound with a fast attack and release already?
hey. awesome composition! may i ask what kind of bacedrum sound you have used? a sample? or is there a drummachine out there with this punchy sound?
Being that the output of the Matrix 1000 is a mono output, how did you get the nice stereo expansion on the recording? What type of external processing was done to get the stereo effect? My Akai multitracker has effects which will do this but not as good as in this recording.
This is totally a noob question and I'm new to these old school units but is there anyway to control through the sequencers built into modern daws?
At 2:04 the maker of this video is looking at you!
@theRealIonian. That's one of the better pictures taken of me.
"The Deep" itsthenoise? What a small world 😁 I uploaded xo surf. Is there matrix 1000 in that track? Cheers..Remko
Yes. There was no Matrix in the studio then. Early The Deep/Dark Globe stuff was made mainly with Wavestation, JD800, TG77, S1000 and Emu 6400 samplers.
I never used a controller so I'm not qualified to comment I'm afraid.
can these Matrix 1000 racks get the exact Oberheim OB-X sounds? My Band plays the Song Subdivisions and that was recorded using an actual OBX. does the Matrix 6 have the OBX sounds in it?
Crush Rushband I think you can get pretty close with the Matrix 1000 although the OB-X has a super alive organic quality which the 1000 doesn't have. I'm not any kind of authority on the subject but the closest I've heard to a OB-X is the free library OB-X synth that works in Reaktor. That sounds amazing and has the Tom Sawyer huge bass in it as a preset.
itsthenoise thx for that info
is there an arpeggiator/sequencer onboard with the matrix 6/6r/1000?
Not on the 1000. I don't know about the other units.
itsthenoise One more question: Can u trigger Oscialltor/Envelope/Filter control etc. via Midi Controller?
You need to check this but I'm fairly certain you can as I seem to remember that the 1000 had extensive midi spec so that it would work with the controller unit that they brought out just after.
itsthenoise There are some "official" Vintage controllers out there costing twice as much or more than the unit itself. I wonder if a more recent controller like Akai/Novation/... work as well. But is it true that they have a huge latency when controlled via midi?
