    Changing all my belts on my 65 Galaxie 500 i learned something today. The notch on the power steering pump is there to tighten it. Much easier thank you

    Under drive pulley sets were a great way for magazines to create content.
    I always feel AFTERMARKET serpentine systems set all your accessories Forward of the block requiring more real estate - and they cost a boatload more than OEM [but if it's aftermarket it MUST be better ...]

    Good video. Harbor Freight tools has an aluminum 40 in. ruler that's inexpensive and works great for belt alignment checks

    A long time ago, J. C. Whitney offered a turnbuckle tool for adjusting belt tension. Takes a little longer than the usual methods, but more precise and with fewer skinned knuckles.

    Hey Jeff, I learned something! Yay!

    Somewhat related question. I’m working on a friends ‘68 corvette 427. It came to him with a v belt going from the crank to the water pump without a tensioner. I’ve seen these in belt diagrams but need some tips on how to get a new one on. Or do we even need it? The only other belt goes to the alternator which catches the water pump as well.

    I've been having a hell of a time burning and ripping belts after my 130 amp 3g alternator upgrade with a single v belt. I feel like no matter how tight I put it the alternator is causing to resistance for my v belt and slipping randomly. I also and noticing minor wobble from my waterpump pulley. I'm running electric fan. Do you suggest the need for double v belt alternator pulley or maybe replace waterpump? Could bearing be bad in there or maybe just waterpump pulley bent from how tight I keep putting the belt 😯

    I have a 307 engine and belt going around the fan and alternator is screaming. any idea what I can do

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  5 років тому

      Two things: Check tension the belt should be tight, there are tools you can get to check belt tension; Gates has one on Amazon for $12: Gates 91107 Belt Tension Tester. Second, if tension is good, you can put a bar of soap against the belt when it is running and it may tame the squeal. But that is a scary proposition on some engines.

  • @markwoten6679

    So what would make a belt squeal? I’m looking to replace my steel two groove crankshaft pulley because it looks warped. It looks like it wobbles when Ford F-150 302 ci engine is running. What do you recommend?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 роки тому

      Low tension, dragging components like an alternator. Alternator that is possibly having a bearing issue can all contribute to belt squeal. Most of the time though it is in fact just just not enough tension on the belt. I would look at it and make sure it's just a pulley wabble not a shaft wobble.

    Out of curiosity, what kind of mileage are you getting with the Cleveland in the Wagon?

      +WheatLover What is this "mileage" you speak of? We average about 14 in the city and 16 on the highway. If Jeff wasn't driving we feel sure it would be better...

    I have an SBC in a 65 truck and the alternator is on the PS of the vehicle. I have a clutch fan. I do not have power steering nor do I want it. I do want to add AC. Is there a good way to setup my pulleys and belts for this? do I need to move the alternator to the DS? I have head accessory bolts and I use a mechanical fuel pump.

      I would call Vintage Air and chat with them regarding the placement. They have quite a few pulley combinations and a good tech staff.

    What is the standard belt tension required?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 роки тому

      Deflection should be 1/64th per inch of span between the pulleys.
