What he says about scheduling, “starting with broad strokes”, is such an important point. I struggled for so long because I over-built everything in my mind, overwhelming myself before I even started. What a wise man. One of the greats of our time. MC
Mr. Peterson, words cannot articulate how immensely you've contributed to my adulthood. As a Nigerian, your advices have got me sane and composed in the midst of nihilistic government.
I am in my second semester, studying Behavioural psych with LRM, working a full-time job and a single mother. I have so much appreciation for your guidance as it keeps me sane.
This is amazing! Congrats on finding a practice that helps you see how valuable you are! Keep going knowing that there are people around the world who are in your corner.
Discipline is the key word here. Do not organize your schedule via your motivation. It helps; Not in the long term though. Discipline! Thank you Dr Peterson for all your many lessons.
you do realise if you didn't havr the nescessary brain chemicals/emotions for motivation you would literally be a birck wall. To have discipline you need a reason which gives you motivation, maybe small amount but motivation regardless.
I love discipline, its my greatest power, pleasure and savior in difficult situations. I have always known this . Motivation is external and dependent on your environment, whereas discipline comes from within and ONLY I determine that.
When I compare myself (my present self) to the man I was yesterday, I become surprisingly inundated with ideas and information I have amassed after having consorted with Dr. Peterson's lessons and books. Thank you Sir, thank you so much.
One thing I dislike is how some people act like Mr peterson has no right to speak or give advice just because he has made some mistakes or went through a mental breakdown. Oh he's not perfect so he has no right to speak or try to help someone. If that's the case then No one on this planet has the right to say anything.
I was so proud with my parents. They had died. When they still exist, they put me into their discipline. Not only discipline, they also always explain to me why they do the discipline to me. For instance, I remember when I was grade 4 on elementary school, and I always woke up late around 6 am. But my mom always woke up at 4 am early in the morning and she was sat down on my bed and wake up me. My mom encourage me to prepare some lesson that I will learn at school for that day. So many discipline that I had learnt from my parents. Currently I was felt weird if my partner no discipline at all.
It felt so bad while reading thisand I am sorry for your los. My mom wakes at 4 am too and my father is also very disciplined. But I am such a loser I have so much trouble controlling myself.
Thanks to Jorden Peterson i no clean my home everyday and really clean it properly 1 time a week, make my bed, taking care of my plants, always go up when alarm go off. Love my home now love inviting people over and clean up the mess after is nice. Now i'm gone start reading books that educate me in different stuff that i want to know more about.
People like to think of success as something that happens overnight, but that's seldom the case. It's years of developing microhabits that add up and snowball over time. That's how hypersuccessful people organize their day, following a schedule and making sure they accomplish everything before they can go to bed. Not adhering to any structure is what causes people to drift off aimlessly and become nihilistic.
Discipline has another aspect that is not often talked about: Joy. Without discipline there would be nothing to look forward to - nothing to concentrate on - nothing to do - no reason for even to stretch muscles - nothing menorable to remember - nothing fruitful to think about - no joy - nothing to live for. No JOY.
Thank you, Jordan Peterson. You have taught me many things that are invaluable to me. You've helped me get through some of the darkest times in my life.
good advice to know all you can of yourself and learn to control your impulses that lead to more personal and human suffering. Sins is a good start in developing an understanding of your worst impulses that lead to the most suffering the most often
WOW I could just hear the underlying psychology knowledge in all these clips! Freud, Jung, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and more, would all be so proud of this man and his articulated weaving of all their knowledge. Thank God JP exists!
Thinking of controlling my impulses and becoming disciplined as conquering squabbling states inside me and forming some sort of unified empire actually helps me conceptualise discipline as something much more glorious than the childhood tiger parent image of it I have.
Living within the disciplines, values, convictions and personal desires, opinions and choices under the direction of God’s Word gives us the opportunity, courage and strength for everyday experiences, and circumstances - unique to each person - to live in freedom, and contentment. Our primary needs in Life. Even author C.S. Lewis sought the solace of contentment, which he labeled “joy.”
Is it too late to become disciplined? After years of heavy drinking and smoking weed, (always mixed with tobacco) I feel older and more burned out than I should do (I'm only 34), but there is still a burning life energy inside. However my burnt out and damaged body is tired and completely out of sync with this energy. Its like trying to charge a phone, but the power socket is switched off. The realisation of wasted time is overwhelming
It’s never too late my friend. I nearly drank, smoked and snorted my way to an early death but trust me it is possible with God’s help to not only stop doing those evil things, but to find hope and purpose in life. It’s not wasted time if we grow and learn from our experience and turn it to the good. But don’t try to bear your cross alone, there is help and community and spiritual nourishment out there!
Even the thought of really putting myself on a schedule to get up and go to bed at the same time it’s like almost insane to me I mean I know it’s possible but I’m so far from it - I’ll set two reminders right now: one for daytime one for nighttime but hell, half the time I’m up at 4 AM anyway- done. 9&5. Start. Go fight win 86

I am self disciplined and I have a strict morel code I live by. I do not know how this came about because I had no mentor. Since childhood I have had my integrity, being true, honest to the point that if I don’t mean it , I will not say it. I mean what I say and say what I mean. If I tell another person I will be there at 7:00am I absolutely arrive on time. I expect others to be the same way. They are not.
Jordan peterson is the only man that still can say bulshit Literally bullshit or exaggerated stuffs and still can make it look serious with his way , so some people don’t seem to understand it and they say there’s someone else’s smatter that can understand it, why his words should be dedicated instead for everyone
I have discipline but i don’t want anything. My mind was kinda broken with the bad since that’s what sticks the most to us. I didn’t believe in good because of all the bad. I didn’t think good could prevail and look at the government right now. I gave up before even starting. When even your parents and siblings wish you dead what would you feel. I retreated into games and hid my good so it didn’t get taken. I put up a wall of mean anger and hid my good behind it so it didn’t get hurt. Im a mask of monster defending that little good i have left. I don’t want to be that though. I want to help people even when they can’t help themselves. I don’t wanna be on tv or anything, i just wanna be better and help everything be better. If you want to be better, i think, the first step is confessing to yourself. Be honest with yourself. No goal is too big. I believe in you.
I have a calendar that i have been working on for a long time that relates to that discipline Jordan, I have uploaded a couple of examples on my you tube channel. Take a look at it if you can spare some time and tell me what you think. I stopped working on for about a couple of years and yes my discipline fell apart so I have decided to go back to using it again.
Dear Dr. Peterson, the work you produce is unmatched at this time and truly something more people should know about...BUT! These kinds of short video's with terrible stock footage ruin the essence of an otherwise great explanation. I can hardly take these video's serious no matter what there might be said. The music and dramatic stock footages makes you look like you try to be some kind of bad guy. Something you are absolutely not, you are clinical psychologist/public speaker/teaher who is amazing at adressing and overcoming social-and personal issues. We need you Jordan Peterson, no one else.
