How to ADD BEADS to macrame | Techniques, tools and inspiration

- Today I am sharing with you my experience with adding beads to macrame. I am talking about what to look out for when buying beads, then I show you how I add the beads onto the macrame cords and lastly I give you some ideas for the different way how you can incorporate beads into any macrame project.

I found 3 different necklaces at the thrift store with wood beads and other materials to strip for parts! You get some unique beads that way!

I LOVE the hardware store. You can find such a wide variety of shapes, sizes, metals and materials. Some of my best designs and ideas have used materials not “meant” for macramé and crafting! Check out washers, copper pipe, nuts, etc. They are inexpensive, can be painted and lots of fun! Thank you for the video, Anna!
Yes!! You are absolutely right and I am the same way. Not that I would be that creative or adventurous with my designs but I do love exploring other materials and “not-macrame” additions…

Thanks for sharing. I have seen a fishing line used to pull cord through beads, I do have that needle for beading and i agree it is very thin.
Right, I think I have seen that fishing line somewhere as well...

I have used beads in my projects before, and you are right about the size of the hole. I have found with gemstone beads that the hole sizes are not always the same, so I would suggest being sure to go big when using them, and have a bead reamer on hand just in case. I am still learning, but I found those needles are the best way for smaller beads and thread especially for dream catchers.
That's a very good point, I didn't realize some types of beads or materials might also vary in the hole size even though they should be the same product...
@@annabaginova01 you wouldn't think they would but they do especially gemstones. But they look so beautiful in the finished product.

Floss threaders work great too and inexpensive!
I always use thread instead of needle for the beads with tiny holes. But I definitely appreciate your investment too as you need to be quick for larger projects 💕
You mean you don’t use a needle to put the beads on the thread? I guess that’s doable too, I think for me I would get too impatient if I had to do it without the needle 😅
@@annabaginova01 yes I don't use needle... I use extra thread instead of needle just the way you showed. But instead of needle you can use a thin sewing thread.
Thanks for this video- love the tips. I’m finding it hard to find different beads esp for 5mm; Amazon only has the same ones! What I do for the 5mm 3 ply & single ply bobbiny is I take a piece of masking tape & roll the ends as tight as I can ‘ then twist it into the bead & it works ok but the nicer beads always have smaller holes but I’ll buy that bead threader to try. Also, I finished the piece you did with the wall hanging shelf& it turned out gorgeous but I need help with putting board on! I get it on and I’ve got my level and everything looks good but then once I hang it in my hallway to take a picture it’s gets crooked & tipsy again and I’m wondering is there a certain way to measure when to put hanging cords in the 4 corners? when I watched your video you fast-forwarded the part where you put the board on but it looked like you were using wire hangers to hold it temporarily is that how you do it? I don’t wanna make another one yet till I get measurements right! Sorry for this long message ☺️ but you’re so talented & a great teacher❤️🇨🇦
Have you tried looking for online stores that specialize in selling beads? That’s where I get them from here in the Czech Republic. Or maybe a local physical store with craft supplies…So for the shelf I used some yarn to help me put it up and I made sure it is the same length on both sides. But I am not sure what happens with yours if you have it straight when working on it and then crooked when you hang it up. Maybe check if your clothing rack is leveled…?

How long did it take to make the project that’s entirety double half hitch?! It’s amazing! I struggle with that knot and I’ve tried your way too but it ends up being too loose. I’m probably doing it wrong

Hi, thanks for the tips. Sometimes I want to make a cluster of beads, kind of like a grape cluster, but not quite as big, but I don't want the cord to show over the beads or around them. Any thoughts?
Hmmm, that's a very interesting idea but I can't think of a way how that could be done. But maybe you already figured it out since I am answering quite late...?
When adding beads in square Knots- do you do the first half of the knot, slide the bread onto the 2 inner cords and then do the second half? Or... use 3 cords instead of 4 so the bread fits? I just did the project in this video (thank you so much for doing it!) It's my first macrame in 30 years and I've forgotten everything! So if you have some tips for actually how to tie the bread into the various Knots? Sorry for long message!
Option A is what I do 😉 I make the first half of the square knot, slide the bead onto the 2 inner cords and then finish the second half of the knot. For double half hitch knots I just add the beads onto the travel cord in between full knots. I hope this helps
@@annabaginova01 yes! It really helps a lot! You're an excellent teacher. I'm having f fun getting back into macrame. It's giving me a much needed break from jewelry- I work in silver and semiprecious to precious stone which is great fun and I love it but...I have a lot of interests and macrame is kind of like lap-work for me, in the sense that I can put my clothing hanger in front of my comfy chair and watch tv while I work. I've always had lap-work, mending, crocheting, quilting, music lol, but jewelery is a hot forge shop (cold forge pieces too of course) but when you're working in hot forge shop you have to be very aware of everything around you. And that wears on me after a while. It's like, after I make this pendant...I need a break, so I'll go macrame! Keeps me busy so I never go back to smoking! You're wonderful and as soon as I can afford to join your patreon, I will!!
Where do you get your accessories from
How would you suggest to add small crystals and pearls on or though you work ?
Hmmm, I have never added either so I don't know what advice to give. I guess if they have a hole drilled in them then you could use them the same way you would add beads. Otherwise I guess you would have to create some sort of a holder for them out of the cords, maybe something similar to a plant hanger...?
I REALLY want to use silicone beads for my project.. What size hole am I looking for if my cord is 3mm?
Silicone beads sound really interesting, I haven’t used those in my work yet. As for the hole it depends if you will be threading only one cord through or two cords. If just one then a 3mm hole or slightly smaller should be fine, if two then it needs to be about double that.

I don’t want to knot my beads on some of my single cord beads to make them stay where I want them. This is when I’m using them in the middle of my design, not the bottom and nowhere that needs a tassel. Is there another way to secure them? Can I make a single knot that stays inside the bead or hot glue the bead center to secure it?
You may have already figured it out for your project but I would say that making a small knot that you then slide into the bead should work fine 😉
I used a hair pins instead of the needle, I never saw the needle you have. I wonder if you tried to add another object to your work like shells or stones. I want to try that and I am thinking on what method would be useful, I thought about attaching them using a square knot like in the plant hangers but I didn't try it yet.
I thought about adding things like shells or stones but not to a point where I would prepare a project with them…I would probably start with googling some inspiration images and then see what I like and try to do it the same way.
It's called a 'big eye needle' here in the US, any place that sells beading supplies should have them.

Does anyone know how to gauge size when buying online? Also, I can’t seem to find the humongous ones that are several inches that go on chime strings with cowbell at the end
So far every time I was ordering online it said what the size of the bead is (sometimes I had to search through the description for a while), although it doesn't always have the size of the hole. I guess you could always ask support on the website...As for your other question I am not sure what those are so I will happily let somebody else answer.

Does anybody used a bog oak beads?
Using a braid threading tool is the easiest way I've found to thread the macrame cord through the wooden bead. Sometimes, when using thicker cord, you have to do one cord at a time to get both cords through the hole. I'd just say to pull the cords through at the end of the cord, rather than trying to pull 6 inches through as it's doubled up. You can even buy kits that includes the threader, a small latch hook (which you can also use to pull the cords through) and a pair of pliers. I would say that the metal threaders are the most sturdy, then wood, with plastic being the least of which. You definitely get what you pay for. I'll include a link at the end of my comment to a kit that comes in multiple colors. I hope this quick tip helps you guys out.
