oh my god im just getting started. I havent macreme'd since i was about 8 years old.... so im 38 now. I want to eventually make wall hangings but my primary reason for getting into it now is i want to learn micro-macreme! and make jewelry with it. I have purchased several macreme necklaces off etsy and I love every single piece i get! I love the unique-ness of this kind of jewelry. I subb'd to your channel and I am slowly going down the list of videos. I dont even have any cord yet, I am just practicing on regular yarn I used to crochet with. I will upgrade to cord when I have learned the basic knots!
Wouldn't like to make you disturbed using lots of words but you're cordially cordial to teach that is really helpful for the beginers. Humble thanks to you teacher.

Hello, I am from Egypt. I am also a beginner, and thanks a lot for your vidéos and all your valuable tips..God bless you dear for your generosity in teaching us.
thank you so much for this information. I haven't seen any video yet that explained how much cord to use to make a pattern. they just say use this much but don't tell you why you need this much. This will make it much easier planning patterns and buying cords now.
I’m glad the explanation is helpful 😌 but like I said in the video it’s best if you take notes of your past projects and that will be the best help in calculating/estimating cord lengths in the future 😉
Another way, which would give us a lot of work but only once, is to have a sample notebook or folder. In different thicknesses of thread, weave a sample of each knot that we usually use. We stick it to a sheet or cardboard and right there we will make all the necessary annotations to keep a record of that particular knot. That way we will have a more accurate record when budgeting our work. I hope it works
Thank you for sharing. I will be making my 1st piece soon (aside from a dollar tree project that I made just to see what macrame is like). My daughter has asked for a minimalist room and has drawn a picture of what macrame project she wants. Now I have to figure out how and if it can be done. :)
Hi, thank you for making these videos. I like your way of explaining. Plz make a video on how to plane a project. Plz explain, how to draw, how to calculate that how many cords we need for project, counting of knots... according that how to measure length of cords. I would like to learn from you 🤗☺. We can start from small project. Lots of love 😚😚
Hi Sanjivani 👋 glad you like the way I explain things 🙂 and thank you for the idea! I already have this one on my list so it’s good to hear that people are really interested in how I plan a project.
Ciao, on parlo inglese ma provo a seguirti con la traduzione in italiano, non è semplice ma riesci comunque a farmi capire i tuoi consigli, sei molto brava , attivo la campanella e proverò ancora a seguirti. Grazie 🙏
Thank you, this was very helpful. Other questions I have are how do you get the angle of the fringe cut the same on each side? Another question is how do you keep the yarn or cord from crinkling up when you are going to send a completed project to somebody?
To answer your first question - it's tricky! 😅 The easiest is to avoid the cutting all together which is what you can do when you are adding the fringe pieces onto the bigger macrame because then you can just cut all of your fringe pieces the same length before attaching them. If it's already on I will either eyeball it or measure the length from wherever the fringe starts and then do that for each piece I am cutting. As for your second question I've never had to worry about that since all the pieces I've sold I handed them over personally...When I was transporting my pieces somewhere I would roll them up but then I always had to fix them up a bit when I unrolled them again.
I’m trying my hand at VDHH knots and I’m having trouble measuring. Do they take up a lot more cord than regular knots? My finished piece will be 2.5 x 3 feet of solidly knotted VDHH using 4mm cord. Yikes! It seems to be a lot.
Love your work and and learnt so much by watching your videos. I am wanting to do a wall hanging in 5mm Bobbiny Braided Cord but not sure how much extra cord needed as it is a 4mm cord pattern. For example- 400mm length of 4mm, how much extra cord in 5mm would I need please?🥰
I am glad my videos have been helpful for you 🙂 I don't have any personal experience with converting the measurements like that with the different cord thickness but I think I have seen a table somewhere online before that has those conversion rates. I would probably add like 10-20% but that's just a rough guess...
Anna, I have made a few small macrame pieces. I planned a large piece out. I started with 3 rows of square knots. I did make the knots tight. I next wanted to make a horizontal line across the piece using the double half hitch knots. The line of half hitch knots came out longer than the above square knot pattern. I also have a place planned in this piece that will be wavy. I had gotten that far and the line of double half hitch knots got long again and snaked back and front. Very wonky. I have watched many tube demonstrations and find your posts to explain how to solve problems well. Can you help me to get my double half hitch knot lines to stay straight on the edges and not snake in and out?
Hi Michie, I think I know what you mean although I would have to see a picture to be sure. But in general when I can see that my double-half hitch lines are getting a bit too long I will just cheat a do a few knots of single hitches only (I just do one loop instead of two). I always separate those single ones with some double ones in between them to make sure none of the knots will unravel. I hope this helps for your future projects.
Hi, that was really helpful. Thank you for your tips. I have made chandelier and I wanted fringe but no matter how much I brush it again twists. I have used single cord size 4mm.If possible please demonstrate. And what about washing these. Need your tips. Thanks in advance
Hi Dipti, I’m happy to hear it was helpful 🙂 yeah, the fringe is tricky. The shorter it is the more it stays straight, that would be my main advice. The only time that a fringe on my piece stayed completely straight was on the wreaths where I’ve used the fabric stiffening spray on it. That could also be something that you can try. But again - the shorter it is the straighter it will stay. For the washing I have never really done that on anything so I am no expert there but I would prefer using a duster rather that putting it in water. I have once dipped a piece of a wall hanging in water and you could clearly see where the water line was because the cord changed color. So that’s why I would not recommend it.
Hi Anna, I’m concerned about how much squeezing the knot to make a nice project. I do mine to much tight i think. So what is it the perfect tightness ? Could you explain and show some result please. I’m French, hope my translating is not to bad Thank you Sofie
Hi, I like precision so thank you for making this video. You have clearly given it a lot of thought. However, how do you account for the fact that the middle strings in the square knot are not used up to the same extent as the outer strings? It becomes even more complicated as usually you'd have alternating square knots so it's not the same strings that are in the centre. Or do you just ignore this and go for the largest length based on measuring the outer strings?
Hi Chrissy, that's such a good question! I am talking about this a little bit in the video in my final tips (around 14:10). It really depends on the pattern, sometimes you can definitely account for this - like I did in this video with the spiral knots ua-cam.com/video/6T6aR8XdXxA/v-deo.html. But other times the pattern is more complicated with lots of different knots and then it would be too time consuming to figure out which cords will get shorter and which won't. So I always keep it in mind and depending on the pattern I decide whether to adjust the cord lengths or not. I hope that makes sense 🙂
Thank you so much for the wonderful explanation… I am a beginner and always use to wonder when I see a project about the length of the cord I need… This is very useful video for me and Thank you a lot for educating about the very basic thing we need to know…💐
Good question but I have never measured this. When I do square knots I am either alternating them so all the cords need to be equal as they are all switching between inner and outer cords or if I am doing a solomon bar (using the same cords and just adding square knots below) I make the inner cords the same length as I want the finished length to be because they are not getting shorter at all. Not sure if this helps...
Thanks so much I just discovered you and am thrilled to have done so....I have a hard time working in mm and cm..how do I figure it out in inches and feet. I know it's easy but I just never know TIA
So happy to hear that! 😊 I use an online converter for that and in all my video descriptions for all the projects you will always find all the measurements in both the metric and imperial units 😉
Hi Ana. Thank you Ana for sharing this video. Can you document why you do the 4 of the second formule of the complicated pattern, please? ((A*4)+B)*2 I can't see it but do you use 6cords (3 pairs)? Thank you.
Hi Sophie. The 4 is there as a general multiplication for all the knots you will be doing in that section, this is the part which is not very precise as we are not counting the exact number of knots we are doing and instead we just multiply the whole knotted section by 4. And this really depends on the pattern - if it's really thick with knots you might need to multiply by 5 instead just to be sure you have enough cord. And vice versa if the pattern is very loose multiplication by 3 might be enough. So I usually go with 4 as the middle ground. I hope that helped to explain it. And yes that one section I was showing it on had 6 cords (3 cords attached with the lark's head knot) but this doesn't have any impact on the formula and measurements.
Thank you! Do you have a video anywhere on how to make the stand that looks like the DNA 🧬? I haven’t seen one listed in your videos but thought I’d ask:)
Yesterday I told my boyfriend that the only problem I have with macrame is deciding the lenght of the cord. And today this video recommendation pops up on my youtube home page. Thank you very much :)
Hi I am making a small curtain for my front peek a boo window..I made your butterfly but would like to make small flowers so that I can attach them into the project but I cannot find patterns without a lot of cords on the back of the flower..I need them flat so you have a pattern for that?!!
Hi Vangie, sorry for the late response. I think you may have confused me with someone else because I haven't done a butterfly before. I unfortunately don't have any flowers either but maybe you were already able to find that pattern somewhere else...?
I always over measure my cords because I’m obsessive about not running out. At the moment I’m trying to think of ways of using the excess cord that I cut too long for a project. 😮. I have some ideas because this can get expensive and I hate wasting cord.
I know I am answering this kinda late so you may not need this information anymore but I think if you google this you should be able to find like a converter table. But honestly I don't have much experience with this since I come up with all the projects myself...
Is there a simple equation to convert between different cord sizes for patterns? One of your patterns, for example, is made with 5mm cord but I have 3mm. Thank you!
I don't really do this so I don't have much experience with it but I have seen before this table that gives you the percentages for the different size conversions - I could only find this image now images.app.goo.gl/Hf7yhX3Wv46dBWdWA
Hi Ana, I'm a newbie and I have a pattern that calls for 65m of cord cut in 26 lengths of cord measuring 2.5 meters. I interpret that to be 250 cm, Im adding extra cord and Im still short. Any suggestions? Thanks Alicia.
Hi Alicia, hmmm, it might be that the pattern is just not correct in the measurements. Another reason could be that they are using a different size of rope or maybe they are making their knots tighter than you so they use less cord. In any case if you are now stuck because you ran out of cord you can try attaching more of it. There is a couple videos on UA-cam walking you through that depending on what pattern you are making. Just search for "macrame running out of rope". I hope that helps.
You mean in terms of the length that you would cut? I think the 3ply and single twist cords should be the same, the braided cords are a bit more stretchy so those can be slightly shorter (but only very slightly 😉). I've done a video on the different cords types so that might be interesting for you as well ua-cam.com/video/9vGbMDy_VFk/v-deo.html
In the example of the green wall hanging, how do I calculate how much smaller "c" will be in the following equation? And another question I have is how to count how many times "B" in the equation? You mention an example for the second batch of ropes where Bx4 but then the next batch will be Bx6, is that correct?
Hi there, so the C is the fringe and you basically need to estimate it, let's say you would like your finished piece to be about 1m long and you know you want about half of it to be fringe so that makes C = 50 cm. In the example of the berry knot wall hanging I was making the fringe was getting longer and longer as I went from left to right so I had to count with that as well. The B is the knot and this is why it's very important to sketch your piece if you are using this method because in the sketch you will see how many knots (=B) you have so you know what number to multiply B with. And yes, you are correct, I am mentioning Bx4 and then the next batch would be Bx6. I hope this helped but please keep asking if you still have questions, I know this is complicated.
@@annabaginova01 Thank you very much for answering, I tried to do it without having seen the calculation turorial and the result was disastrous, the threads were short and I was very frustrated until I found this new video. I will try again, thanks for your help!
@@solenoide86 Oh I know the feeling, still happens to me today (especially when I am too lazy to calculate anything 😁). But there also many ways how you can knot in a new cord when the original one is running out. I haven’t made such a video yet but if you search for it on UA-cam you will find a few of those.
ok im confused (sorry) i used the formula to work out length of cord but is that length for each cord or the total amount? my calculations come out as 420cm so im thinking that must be for each cord and then i multiply by how many cords i will tie to get overall amount of cord needed for project. is that right? please help!
Hi Kim, I would say that 3mm to 4mm is such a small difference I wouldn't change the length of the cords. If you are really worried about running short add 10% of the original length and you should be good.

How much shorter (maybe a guess of %) should the outside cords be vs the inside cords when making square knots?
Good question but I have never measured this. When I do square knots I am either alternating them so all the cords need to be equal as they are all switching between inner and outer cords or if I am doing a solomon bar (using the same cords and just adding square knots below) I make the inner cords the same length as I want the finished length to be because they are not getting shorter at all. Not sure if this helps...
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Thanks for very useful video ❤🌹
I’m glad it helped 😌
That would definitely be helpful as well! I might actually do that, thanks for the idea 😉
Excelente idea!
Thanks sweetie 💓
Welcome 😊
Hi Anna (sorry forgot 1 n),
Yes, okay my thinking was right. Just to have enough cord.
Thank you. :-)
I’m glad that helped!
Thank you so much.... It's helpfull for me..
Thank you, I love to hear that it’s helpful for you guys!
Thank you! Do you have a video anywhere on how to make the stand that looks like the DNA 🧬? I haven’t seen one listed in your videos but thought I’d ask:)
Anna, do you have a video that you have made a cat bed or hammock for cats that hangs?
I haven't done one of those...
Yesterday I told my boyfriend that the only problem I have with macrame is deciding the lenght of the cord. And today this video recommendation pops up on my youtube home page. Thank you very much :)
Thank you so much, you are wonderful :)
Thank you! 😊
When covering a clothes hagger about24 inches around how much cord is required?
I tend to do the same. I recently did a video on how to use scraps, maybe you've seen it already ua-cam.com/video/r8RyZjTKObI/v-deo.html
Thanks! I’ll be making some of these! I’m definitively going to make a couple dog toys for my daughter’s puppy! Great idea!
Obrigada pela aula e por colocar legenda em português Brasil 🇧🇷❤❤❤❤❤❤ Suas explicações foram perfeitas!!❤❤❤
I am glad to hear those subtitles were helpful 😊
Hi. Could you help me figure out how much to add when making a project with a different size of cord than the original project. Thanks!
I know I am answering this kinda late so you may not need this information anymore but I think if you google this you should be able to find like a converter table. But honestly I don't have much experience with this since I come up with all the projects myself...
@@annabaginova01 thank you for the response.
@@annabaginova01 thank you!
Gracias!! Es mucho trabajo realmente
Right, it really is…
Hoping to learn how much to use for double diamond baroque western belt for an i8 month old
Well I hope the video helped you figure it out
Thank you very much.
I hope that helps.
do you happen to have a pattern to macrame a cancer survivor ribbon but within a wall hanging??
I am sorry, I don't have one....I hope you were able to find one somewhere else.
Would the cord needed also change if let's say the pattern called for 5mm 3 ply but you use 5mm string instead?
You mean in terms of the length that you would cut? I think the 3ply and single twist cords should be the same, the braided cords are a bit more stretchy so those can be slightly shorter (but only very slightly 😉). I've done a video on the different cords types so that might be interesting for you as well ua-cam.com/video/9vGbMDy_VFk/v-deo.html
@@annabaginova01 okay cool that's what I thought but I just wanted to be sure! I'll go check out the video!
Thank you so much!!
My pleasure! 😊
How much weight can it support
Right, the amount is just for one cord to cut and then it depends on your pattern how many cords you will need.
@@annabaginova01 thank you xxx
If my pattern calls for 3 mm but I want to use 4mm how do I calculate how much longer my cords need to be. Single strand
Hi Kim, I would say that 3mm to 4mm is such a small difference I wouldn't change the length of the cords. If you are really worried about running short add 10% of the original length and you should be good.
Wowww, thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Thankyou!!!
