When I was 14 I passed my Cookery O level exam including a strawberry gateau cake. Ever since then I have always made myself a strawberry gateau cake for my birthday but this is something else! It took me two days to make and I can feel a heart attack coming on! I'll blame you John! :)

Oh, John, that was wonderful seeing the people you shared this delish cake with! A personal touch much appreciated. Very humoristic too! I'll definitely try this cake. You definitely know how to simplify even the most intimidating looking recipes into something someone like me (having 2 left thumbs) would want to try.

@@JohnKirkwoodProFoodHomemade Hi John. It would've all the more difficult if the recipe was just from a book (not impossible though) but the video made it so easy as it's broken down in simple to follow stages as with all your recipes. Thanks again for the video, the cake made a special day all the more so. Graham.

I've just made it a second time with great results. This time it only took one day to make, for my daughters birthday with gluten free flour, which worked fine. Tip: if the mousse is too soft and runny put it in the fridge for 5 minutes, if it is too hard to spread microwave it for 20 seconds. Thank you again for your superb recipes John, as others have said, they are somewhat superior to the flash bang stuff you see on the telly.

This moose (or chocolate filling, I can't remember what it's called) is absolutely delicious. I made a vat of it (the recipe makes a lot), and, he's right, it makes a great dessert. It's rich enough that you don't need much of it before you're satisfied, so it'll probably take over a month to finish alone but... it's definitely worth it, and pretty easy (I was able to make it taste great first try, and I know almost nothing about baking).
Note: I didn't have dark chocolate, so I just used Ghiradelli semisweet morsels, and they worked just fine, though a tiny bit sweeter than I think was intended. Also, when I poured the water into the saucepan to heat the sugar, it didn't even cover the whole bottom, so I was a bit worried that I mismeasured somehow, but the sugar made everything fill out perfectly and the sugar boiled just fine, if anyone else had a similar problem.

John, absolutely mouthwatering. I am so hungry now. One quick question, I live in the dark ages and cannot source leaf gelatin in my town. I have powdered, how much would you say I should use of that as I do not want to over do it.
Many thanks I'm definitely making a practice one of these then one for Christmas.

hello, i finally made this cake for work... i ended up doubling the cake recipe replacing the granulated sugar with castor... and used 90% dark (because i like it lol) for the mousse, anyway, short story is - this is delicious! so i was told by staff and a couple thought the cake was bought today. i used a hand mixer... i am more inclined to get a bench top mixer for the next one. thank you from new zealand for the informative video and recipe. my aunt is chuffed to have another choc. mousse recipe - if she had it her way she would have eaten the whole bowl by herself.
