Check out his recordings for Sun, Groove, Hi and Smash. The man was everywhere between Jazz, Blues, Gospel, R&B and Country - he was so much more than the Countrypolitan stuff that made him famous.

The only band on TV these days that’s even worth mentioning is the American Idol house band! We just don’t see shows like this anymore. The artists of yesteryear had to actually work their way up the ladder to succeed. These days it’s just handed to them via voting! Today’s mindset is sorta wrenched out of context compared to the good old days.

@@bigelile07Yes, but it was only for ppl from USA. The Brits had Old Grey Whistle Test, Top of the Pops (Amongst others). The French had Pop 2, Chorus, Bouton Rouge etc and the Germans had Beat Club, Musikladen and more importantly Rockpalast which started in 1975 and is still being shown on German TV station WDR. I lived in New Zealand in the 60s and 70s and was starved of seeing my favourite Rock bands. It was not till I emigrated to London in the late 80s, and started VHS video trading with a USA guy, that I became aware of TMS and DKRC shows as I got tapes of Mahogany Rush who appeared on both. The sad thing is that there is the opportunity to create a similar show to TMS which could incorporate Ed Sheeran, Queens of the Stone Age, Steven Wilson and Nicky Minaj on the same episode, but people's mindsets have changed, and the youth of today are not reliant on the TV anymore and have the Stream anytime mentality, as is the case with vinyl and CDs. I am old school myself, and I appreciate Mr Sugarman did not delete these treasure chest shows like the BBC did with OGWT. At least the Beat Club released a complete box set release of every show. Just hope I'm still alive to see Thin Lizzy perform Killer on the Loose from 1981 amongst others from latter years

Listening to early 50s country music lead Charlie to start singing and performing. He was a crossover artist singing hits in both country and the mainstream charts. He was at Sun Records, where Elvis recorded, as a background musician starting in 1957. He played with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Billy Lee Riley among others. Sam Philips and the others at the studio got him to start doing his own material and in 1960 he released his first single "Lonely Weekends." The career peak was between 1969 and 1981. He semi-retired in the mid 80s and passed away in 1995 from plumonary embolism. He was 62. If he had been alive today he would have been 91. He also played the trumpet in High School before switching to piano. He played the piano for a gospel outfit when he began. Eventually was part of a jazz combo before moving to Sun Records to be a session musician. He left Sun Records and kept bouncing around after several singles and albums flopped. Epic Records was the main label he sang at in the 70s. But by 1979 he was with United Artist Records. His son Alan also performed pop music. Before his passing he began performing again. In 1992 he launched a tour and in 1993 released his first album in 13 years with "Pictures and Paintings".

Wow, another wonderful journey in the Way Back Machine. I remember when Charley Rich set the card announcing John Denver's win, lol. I went dancing one time in the Zanzibar Club where Clint Eastwood shot Any Which Way but Loose, a real country dive bar, they had Clint's face painted on the front door. I love me some Ann Murray, quite a talent. The Treasures appear to be one of those groups who had a song on the radio, but never had a hit, 🚨 Obscure Alert! Dobie Gray is the one I'm waiting on, will have the headphones set to stun on that one, I may not want to come back to 2024 after Drift Away! Thank you, Midnight Special!
