Finally. Rory Gallagher, called the people's guitarist for dressing unaffectedly. Sneakers or boots, jacket, lumberjack shirt or t-shirt, jeans and his old, and beat-up Fender Stratocaster were enough for him. Playing in small pubs and stadiums gave him the same pleasure and commitment. He began his career with his power trio Taste in 1965. They recorded two studio albums and two live albums, in addition to a 1967 studio album released years later. In 1972, already as a solo artist, Rory was chosen guitarist of the year by the newspaper Melody Maker. Rory had a consistent solo career, recording 14 albums and touring extensively throughout most of the world. In addition to the Stones, he was also considered to play in Deep Purple to replace Ritchie Blackmore. Among his admirers, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, as well as guitarists such as Slash, Bryan May, Joe Bonamassa, The Edge... Eric Clapton credits him with his return to the blues. There is a lot of history about him, many appearances on albums by other artists, including Muddy Waters, Albert King, Albert Collins, Jerry Lee Lewis... it's clear that I'm an old fan of his, right? From Brazil, thank you Midnight Special. I don't know if it was intentional, but on this same day, June 14, 1995, Rory passed away after complications from a liver transplant in London. He was only 47 years old. It is still a beautiful tribute to him. Thank you.

Bill Withers, my brother fell in love with "Lean on Me" from this episode and bought the single Saturday morning from TG&Y, then put it on the turntable and just let it play, till mom had him turn it off, 15 times in a row was working her nerves! MONTROSE! I can't wait to see a young Sammy Hagar, this band should have RULED 1975! Rory Gallager so much talent, like Van Gogh not full appreciated in his lifetime. Melissa Manchester, always hot! While I am beyond eternally grateful to hear three tracks off Bills +Justments album, I would have died had he sang the opening track: You.

Ironically, shown on the anniversary of Rory Gallagher's death (29 years). Nonetheless, an amazing show. Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, and Buddy Miles together!? Wow! Montrose live with Sammy...a rare treat.

Always watched Midnight Special!! This was a great lineup. Back when musicians and singers were really singing. Back then, you had to have a great voice and play your instruments. None of the crap they have today to make your voice seem like it’s great, when it’s subpar. Back then what you heard and saw was exactly what they really sounded like. Miss those days. A great time for all kinds of music. The Midnight Special brought together all genres of music in every single show. Something for everyone. Indeed a fun time to be young ❤😊!

@@Royale_with_Cheeze ,thank you very much. In the early days. despite what you hear, a lot of folk dismissed Rory as being “too rogue.” That is, he didn’t play like BB King or Pete Green, both of whom I love. But RG just did his own thing, so well! Best T

The best musicians and artists don't follow the rest. They lead their own path and create something better for all.
I honestly didn't listen to Rory in my teenage 1970s ea, but I owe it to myself to listen to what I can now.
Midnight Special was so good in those days to give relatively unknown talent a stage before a national audience.
I was 13 when MS started up. It came on from 1 - 2.30 AM.
The only TV in the house at the time was in the living room, right off my parents' bedroom, separated by a curtain. No way to be up that late.
These episodes are all new to me, 50 years later.
Rory was great! I expect he was a great guy to hang with and is surely missed.
      Peace, Tom.

Omgoodness, Rory was your friend?! How wonderful his friendship must have been and I’m so sorry you miss him. He came across as a very kind, soulful man. Hope the great memories you had together put a smile on your face. Unfortunately I just discovered Rory four years ago, what I’m most impressed with is how he was ADORED by- and truly appreciated and loved his fans. Playing for them during the “Troubles.” Thankful for YT for making new fans out of the youngsters. My favorite song I’ve seen him perform live is “Out On the Western Plain.” It’s an old ‘Leadbelly’ song - the chorus is rad:
“Come a cow-cow yicky, come a cow-cow yicky, yicky yea.
Come a cow-cow yicky, come a cow-cow yicky, yicky yea.” 🎼 Rory put a cool spin on it with his vocals.
Guess you could say I’m a western lady and that suits me, just fine. I feel the freest riding horseback in the Rocky Mountains or on the back of a Honda Goldwing 1500.
      Thanks for sharing. 😃❣️❣️

Cliff DeYoung the character actor in his early days. I just watched him in Secret Admirer from 1985 with Fred Ward. An actual funny teen comedy with laughs. He has been in a million movies in supporting parts. Crazy I never knew he was a musician earlier in the 70’s.

Bit of a change of pace here that they showed that video clip of the tv movie Sunshine, not sure if they'd ever done something like that any other time. I was 9 when that film came out and the portrayal of a very young women dying of cancer was psychologically disturbing at that young age.

@@JamieAndersonMusic When I think of growing up in the 70s, it was such an incredible time for American cinema. Most tv movies struck me as really cheesy back then, and even the best of them couldn't hold a candle to the best theatrical films, which were masterpieces. A bit ironic that in today's world, what's akin to tv movies now (premiering on a home screen) are often superior to what gets released theatrically.
