The original piano piece was written by Toshiro Mayuzumi in 1947 while he was a student at the Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), and was premiered at the school's concert hall in October of the following year. It was dedicated to Takahiro Sonoda. At the time, Mayuzumi was a student but a pianist in the jazz band "Blue Coats." Perhaps because of this, the piece was initially conceived with drums. [Quoter's note: A score with drums has now been found, recorded, and published.]
In 1998, when the CD "tonepleromas 55," a collection of Toshiro Mayuzumi's wind works (conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra) produced by Ken'ichiro Isoda was produced, this piece was scheduled to be included with Jun Nagao's arrangement, but was cancelled due to various reasons. It was finally revived in recent years, and has been performed at competitions and other events, attracting much attention.
The piece is in two movements and runs at a modern pace while incorporating elements of jazz and pop music.
The first movement incorporates a boogie, and the second movement a rumba. The mood is somewhat reminiscent of Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs" and "West Side Story," but needless to say, this piece was born first.

　原曲は、黛敏郎が東京音楽学校(現・東京藝術大学)在学中の1947年に書き、翌年10月、同校奏楽堂で初演されたピアノ曲。園田高弘に献呈されている。当時、黛は学生ながら、ジャズ・バンド「ブルーコーツ」のピアニストだった。その影響か、当初はドラム付きで構想されていたという。[引用者注:現在、ドラム付きの楽譜が発見され、録音・出版されている。]
　1998年、磯田健一郎プロデュースによるCD、黛敏郎管楽作品集『トーンプレロマス55』（岩城宏之指揮、東京佼成ウインドオーケストラ）製作の際、本曲が長生淳編曲で収録される予定だったが、諸事情から中止となっていた。近年になり、ようやく復活し、コンクールなどでも演奏され、話題になっている。
　タイトルは「前菜」「おつまみ」（オードブル）。曲は2楽章構成。ジャズ、ポップスの要素をからめながら、モダンに疾走する。第1楽章はブギ、第2楽章はルンバが取り入れられている。どこか、バーンスタインの《プレリュード、フーガ&リフス》や《ウエスト・サイド・ストーリー》を思わせるムードがあるが、いうまでもなく、本曲の方が先に生まれている。
