"Suite for Small Orchestra" is a work consisting of two pieces composed in January 1949. The work consists of an Allegro molto named "Basso Ostinato" and an Allegretto marked "終曲-トッカァタ (Finale-Toccata)" on the cover. However, on the cover of the score for the finale, there is a notation that can be read as "IV" in Roman numerals, indicating that the suite originally consisted of four pieces, and although the score has not been confirmed to be extant, it is highly possible that it was co-composed with another composer. The first performance was broadcast on NHK radio program "Nichiyou Zuisou (Sunday Essay)" on January 16, 1949. By the way, the theme music for "Nichiyou Zuisou" was also composed by Akutagawa.
The compositional period of this work falls between "Trinita Sinfonica" (1948) and "Musica per orchestra sinfonica" (1950), but "Basso ostinato" is an orchestral arrangement of the middle movement of the piano piece "La Danse" composed in 1948 when Akutagawa was a student at the Tokyo College of Music. The finale is truly charming, with the characteristics of Akutagawa's early works. In this work, by adopting a smaller instrumentation of double-winds without percussion, trumpet and trombone (perhaps in consideration of the sound through speakers for radio broadcasting), Akutagawa eliminated sustained chords in the middle brass range, as in the third movement of the "Trinita Sinfonica," and made the entire work consistent with the bare rhythmic accompaniment as in the "Musica per orchestra sinfonica."
This outstanding work was broadcast only once on the radio, and was not performed again for about 65 years. This is nothing short of a tragedy, not only for Akutagawa's fans, but also for all those involved with music in the world.

「小管絃楽のための組曲」は、1949年1月に作曲された2曲からなる作品である。
曲は、「Basso ostinato」と名付けられたAllegro moltoと、「終曲-トッカァタ」と表紙に記されたAllegrettoで構成されている。しかし、終曲のスコアの表紙にはローマ数字でIVと読み取れる表記があり、元々全4曲からなる組曲であり、スコアの現存は確認できていないが、「祝典組曲」などと同様に、別の作曲家との共作であった可能性が高い。初演は、1949年1月16日放送のNHKラジオ「日曜随想」であった。なお、この「日曜随想」のテーマ音楽も芥川の手によるものである。本作品の作曲時期は、ちょうど「交響三章」(1948)と「交響管弦楽のための音楽」(1950)の中間にあたっているが、「Basso ostinato」については、東京音楽学校在学中の1948年に作曲されたピアノ曲「La Danse」の中間楽章をオーケストレーションしたものである。終曲は、初期の芥川作品にみられる特徴を備えた実に魅力的なものであり、打楽器、トランペット、トロンボーンを欠いた2管編成という小さめの管弦楽であること、ラジオでの放送を前提としたためスピーカーを通しての音響を考慮した点もあろうが、オーケストレーションの方法に於て「交響三章」の第三楽章でみられるような、中音域の金管楽器の持続和音が姿を消し、「交響管弦楽のための音楽」に見られるような、むき出しのリズムのみによる伴奏が全曲を通して聴かれ、あたらしい時代への希望や命の力、音楽の喜びを、より強く訴えるものとなっている。このような音楽が、ラジオでたった1回だけ放送され、以降、およそ65年にわたって演奏されなかったことは、芥川ファンにとってはもちろんのこと、世の中の音楽に関わるものすべてにとって、悲劇以外の何物でもないと思う。
