Opera "Yūzuru (Twilight Heron)" - Tsu's Aria "Yohyo, oh my darling, my beloved Yohyo"
text by Junji Kinoshita [木下順二] (1912~2006, Japan)

[Yohyo, oh my darling, my beloved Yohyo,]
[what can have happened to you?]
[You have been changing little by little,]
[I fear that you will soon become a stranger from another world, you will become a stranger!]
[I am afraid you'll become just like those horrible men,]
[those who wanted to kill me with their arrows. Oh darling, I fear you will become a stranger!]
[What can it be, Oh my dear love?]
[Oh, what shall I do now? What shall I do?]
[What shall I do, what shall I do? Yohyo, my beloved one.]
02:13
[Darling, on that day you found me, Wounded and laying in the field in pain,]
[And with no thought of recompense or of gain, Drew that arrow and gave me life]
[I fell in love with your kind and generous soul,]
[That is why I came here to live with you and to be your wife!]
[And when I made you the cloth woven with my feathers]
[You were as happy as a child, my darling. Happy as a child, my darling!]
[And just because I loved to see you look so happy,]
[I wove you more cloth, and more and more cloth,]
[dear, in spite of all the pain!]
[But every single time, you did take the cloth, take the cloth and barter it for gold! Silver and gold!]
[But I do forgive you, dear beloved one!]
[Since gold and silver mean so very much to you, dear.]
[And now you have the gold and silver you want, dear.]
[Now let us dwell together, Darling, just you and me!]
[Here in our little cottage forever.]
[A happy life. Far from all strife. Thus let it always be!]
04:28
[Darling, you were not like other people, not like other men.]
[No, my darling, you belonged to my world!]
[But now, you seem to be drifting far away from me,]
[You are surely drifting away!]
[What can it be, Oh my dear love?]
[Oh, what shall I do now? What shall I do?]
[What shall I do, what shall I do?]
[Yohyo, my beloved one.]

Tsu is a crane that has been disguised as a human and married off to Yohyo, who rescued her when she was suffering in a trap. Tsu made a promise not to peek into her room while she was weaving, and made a beautiful cloth for Yohyo. Yohyo was very happy, and Tsu was also happy to see his happy.
However, through acquaintances of Yohyo's, Tsu's cloth was sold at a high price. For money, they asked Yohyo to have his wife weave more cloth. Since Yohyo could also get money, he accepted the request and asked Tsu to weave cloth again.
Tsu, who had no idea that the cloth made from her feathers was being converted into money, was shocked by Yohyo's request and asked to be left alone for a while. Then the aria "Yohyo, oh my darling, my beloved Yohyo" is sung. (by contributor)
