There was a farm animal program for many years at a hospital on that side of the river and the people in care there benefited from it but then the government chose to close Colony Farm.

People who can't afford dogs must enjoy watching this....the dog got a second chance but he didn't murder anyone.
perhaps if the inmates did more efforts to work instead of provide another public service I might support it. the dog program could be one component.
so kill a person get to work with dogs....

It's a multi-level risk prison. These women are not necessarily high risk for re-offending and at least they're given a chance instead of being thrown away like a lame dog.

@@ratgrandma6540 Your comment has not a thing to do with the dogs. There are several programs like this, only they stay with the inmates, they are shelter dogs, and many people want to adopt their dogs from these programs after training with the inmates, or become ready for a foster home. These program dogs have had their lives saved, created a space for another dog in the shelter, and last but not least, the prisoners seem to grow too, becoming responsible, and caring for another living, breathing creature.

These prison programs that bring in animals really rehabilitate the prisoners. W/out a program like this, prisoners re-offend at a rate over 60%. If they've been involved w/ animal training the re-offense rate plunges down to less than 5%. It saves animals ready to be put down and it saves the prisoners. They have highly specialized dog training programs, like training service dogs for 2 years for veterans or the blind. This training costs over 25k on the outside and the dogs are not trained as well, or as fast, as hands on 24/7 attention like prisoners can give. Plus the prisoners compete w/ each other, in a good way, to train their dogs the best. It doesn't cost tax payers, the training is free, but superior, and it doesn't cost tax payers. Food and supplies come from donations, even vets will volunteer services. Sometimes even the prisoners donate some of their little money for the dogs. These programs are wonderful.
