This program is an amazing idea, idk why it isn't implemented in more prisons.
USA, commercialized prisons.
I don't know why either. The rates of recidivism of the prisoners who take part in these schemes is incredibly low, it is a huge success everywhere it has been implemented. It truly does rehabilitate the guys (and gals) in prison, in a long term, life affecting way.
@@ShadowGhostHD 100% If dogs can be rehabilitated, humans can too and incarceration for profit is gross and inhumane. No matter how bad a crime you commit, you and society will be better off if we don't just throw you in a cage and further abuse you.
not sure if this was rhetorical, but the answer is simple, because it cost money; mass incarceration in the US is a for-profit industry. the government does not, nor do privatized prisons seem to care about recidivism, so they will not dish out money to reduce it. these programs are NOT funded by the prison and getting a prison to invest financially in such a program would be damn near impossible. the programs are funded by donations and privately owned charities - there are simply not enough people willing to use their resources (money) helping others, none the less felons who don't even have constitutional rights and are dehumanized to the general public.

"I understand why the dogs were aggressive- because they were insecure- a lot of us prisoners are like that too"- yes, yes, yes! Why don't prison systems listen to this and turn prisons into places where people are rehabilitated- not just hardened and sharpened into more effective criminals.
Amen. I agree 100%. Most Prisons do nothing to help the inmates be better humans. They don't help the drug addictions, short tempers, education, further education, ability to better people, build trust, learn a trade or anything positive fot them. Laws, rules and regulations need to improve drastically in the prison system. There needs to be much better training of the guards. More in-depth evaluations of their background check, check for mental problems, racist practices etc... This young man in this story had a great shot at life because that prison had the dog training program that not only helps the imates learn and feel differently about things, but helps the dogs go on to have a second chance at a better life too. God bless that young man.
@@vickimartin3008 Another thing that gets missed is nutrition. I saw a British documentary where a culinary training college got the contract to provide all food at a nearby prison. They consulted with nutritionists and planned high "brain food" menus- high in omega-6 etc- but in forms the prisoners would eat- such as wholemeal pizza dough and pizza with lots of hidden vegetables- french fries baked in an oven with the potato skins on for fibre- vitamin enriched margarine, high omega-6 eggs - and gradually introduced more fresh fruit and vegetables over time.
The results in three months were astounding- a 70% drop in attacks on staff, similar numbers in suicide attempt reduction and inter-inmate violence. 40% more inmates started to attend training classes- the prison offered basic trade skills- plumbing, carpentry, fixing cars -as well as math, English and so on.
If your brain doesn't have the right fuel, it can't work properly- you can't learn and you can't think straight.
This is a very "quick fix" all prisons could do- it requires raising the food budget- but not by a huge amount- and the direct savings- guards not being off work with injuries or stress- are not only bigger, but immediate.
To answer your question Alison Green, it is bcuz prison is a business, just like war is a business. Companies profit from ppl being in their prisons. It's not to rehabilitate ppl, it's simply to house them, that's it..

There is a federal department regulating prisons- they have the power to change what happens inside them.
Bc it cost $$ and most are not willing to spend that $
I love this man's description of how he learned empathy. Empathy does have to be learned and I think a lot of prisoners had childhoods that meant they never learned it. It's a disaster for their victims and for them too.
I'd agree partly, empathy can be taught overtime if you're open to seeing others not just yourself.
Sadly a lot in the system have mental health issues of varying types with some just not wired to learn these things, as much as the crimes impact victims there is normally a reason why people do what they do i.e no remorse because they are sociopaths, not their fault but still ultimately a choice was made and they can't feel bad about it.
@@DeadManInBlack But sociopaths do have feelings. They have learned to switch off caring about other people as a survival tactic. If you can create an environment where being empathic has rewards, they will be "re-wired"- even adult brains have a degree of plasticity.
The problem in western society is that men being empathic is seen as feminine and weak, rather than as a valuable skill that builds relationships. "Success" - for men (and increasingly for women) is defined in purely material terms- not in terms of how many good relationships you have.
Liking people and being liked have become things that you fake or leverage for material gain- not valuable in themselves. People view themselves as individuals, not as part of a collective.
The countries in Europe with a greater sense of "community"- the Scandinavian countries- consistently score highest in "happiness" ratings and have the lowest levels of crime.
@@alisongreen7576 Thanks for the interesting reply, as you say sociopaths have feelings but they have a lack of empathy or remorse in most cases even if they know something is wrong. When doing scans there is a difference in how a non sociopath brain works to sociopath, hence the common traits such as a disregard for rules, tend to be on the aggressive side, lack of empathy. The brain can always learn but the basic functionality can't easily be changed beyond severe trauma, medication or surgery.
It's like how when someone transitions from their birth sex, in most cases they have the brain of the opposite sex to what body they were born with, other examples someone with diabetes or suffer from depression not producing the correct levels of chemicals to function correctly which can only be resolved with medication or occasionally diet changes.
I think there are plenty of people that are as you described like the young lad in the video that can learn to be different and this can be done with various therapy types or programs but some people are just wired different and due to this simply aren't open to treatment even if it would work.
I won't pretend these things are a one size fits all or that it's not worth trying where possible but ultimately like all people, everyone's story is individual. It's a very complex issue with every person having a million different things that led them to the point they are now including society trends.
@@DeadManInBlack But... if you study military veterans with PTSD, their brains function like sociopath brains and show the same structural changes. With therapy, this can return to normal. What is a main characteristic of PTSD? Loss of empathy!
If you view sociopathy as a form of PTSD- or cPTSD- stemming from trauma in childhood (or later)- it opens up the possibility of treatment.

This needs to be implemented in Juvie too. A lot of kids that are at risk, but not aggressive or cruel towards animals, REALLY benefit from programs like this. So many dogs NEED help, why not do something mutually beneficial? I know some people can’t be rehabilitated, but for the ones that can, programs like this could change a lot of lives.

I completely agree with you. Kids who are in tragic situations need more mentors and programs that give them a reason to work hard and dream about their future. Working with animals is a great way to foster empathy and self confidence. Like you said, as long as they have NOT shown any violent tendencies towards animals, I think it's a wonderful idea.
It's amazing to see people get another chance and help another being as pure as a dog!
We have to make the American incarceration system more like this instead of treating people who committed crimes as animals themselves, living in violent conditions and throwing them back on the street. ❤️❤️❤️

I did mean unconditional love. Didn't mean to hurt you. I do love what you do. I love animals, my husband and I rescued our cat from my mother-in-law's neighbor.

Agreed! They also need to bring programs in to nursing homes where they foster kittens and puppies. It gives them a purpose and so much joy and keeps the fur babies out of the shelters. Win/win!
We have a similar program but instead of dogs it’s farm animals. We don’t have a lot of rescue dogs. We have a lot of rescue sheep, pigs, cows, horses etc.
So imagine an inmate walk around with this potbelly pig someone sold as a teacup pig and it got to 100kg
I was in jail for a long time and I believe in this program to rehab people! They need to start doing this in all the jails all over the US. It shows empathy for something that you may not have had when you committed your crime.

I have been supporting these prison dog and cat programs for 20+ years. They are the best and every prison should have them!

This has been a dream of mine for a very long time - a rehab centre for people and dogs. The rates of recidivism in prisoners who take part in these programmes is incredibly small, it really, really makes a huge difference to their souls. And the dogs get rehomed to safety, so it's all good. Damn, I would love to be involved in something like this.
Couldn't you start up a programme yourself. Contact local prisons, and dog shelters.
Make your suggestions. And offer to be the go between. Might mean a lot of work for you.

They don't really do much rehabilitation in American prisons at all. They lock up young men like this man and keep them in overcrowded conditions with others like them and worse and then they wonder why recidivism is too damn high! This is truly a great program. We need to implement this and many other different types of rehabilitation programs in every prison. Otherwise, we are only setting ourselves up for more crime, more violence, and more recidivism, rinse and repeat at an ever-growing rate. I'm sure the prison guards union and the owners of private prisons would love to keep the status quo.

Dodo always makes animals seem more human. And sadly, especially in America, prisoners are seen as animals. I hope they spotlight more stuff like Pawsitive Change. Because experts believe the way we dehumanize our criminals is a HUGE reason why they reoffend. How else would this guy have come out of jail thinking he has the power to do good?

The Dogs' lives were saved and in turn they saved this young man's life.

I’m crying here, listening to Vo’s story. How moving and inspiring he is! I’m glad Prada and Turbo were adopted by Vo’s family, so that they will always be in his life. I think this is one the best story I've seen here. A man with life sentence without parole? I can imagine what he did but look at him now!!! Everyone is capable of changing, and who doesn't believe that dogs are angels with fur this is the proof!!!!

To be sentenced to life without parole, I can guess what Vo may have done in his earlier years. And look at him now. Nearly every person is capable of growth and self-improvement. We need more compassion and trust for the humans in our prisons, just as Prada and Turbo learned. Look at what love and trust can accomplish.

I saw this special on PBS. The love they have for their four legged babies is beautiful. For some of the inmates; it was the first time they felt genuinely loved. l hope that the prison system keep this program. Everyone (4 and 2 legged living beings) deserve a second chance in life. That's one of the best projects they have in prison for the inmates.
Even if you’re a person who has absolutely no remorse for the treatment of people in prison who deserve to be there for one reason or another, how can you not support a program like this? These dogs otherwise would have been sadly killed but now they get a real second chance at life and being adopted. At its most basic level, who cares who rehabilitates these innocent lives (the dogs) when there isn’t anyone else to help these dogs. *However, it does make me happy that this program seems to help the inmates grow in their capacity for empathy, which is a large factor in their own rehabilitation process.
My Service Dog spent 6 months of his early training, in a prison program in Maryland. I think it’s a great service to both the prisoners and the dogs.💕

As someone who donates all my free time daily at a horse therapy center, I agree. I watch people just thrive in the presence of our horses and farm dogs everyday. From kids with autism to former criminals. Animals are powerful beings in that way and show us that there's always more to life. ❤️

The power of love heals EVERYTHING. This man's journey is incredible, he should write a book. What a beautiful human being. 💞 It has been demonstrated, time after time, that people who are in prison are transformed by working with animals and other things, such as gardening. When they find their purpose, the shifts that occur in their lives are profound. There are only a small percentage of people who cannot be rehabilitated. Our prison system fails humanity, unless they incorporate programs similar to this one.

I've seen bits and pieces about programs like this and it always fills my heart with so much hope. Beautiful story, beautiful storytelling through artwork. I hope every inmate with the desire for rehabilitation can get to experience this sort of bonding with an animal. It can be truly life-changing for every living being involved.
Even people in prison can change it didn't surprise me much because after I got outta jail I learned my lesson I really love my peace and privacy I don't care for sharing a cell with another man
