Fun fact: the scene where Buddy arrives in New York City was semi improvised, since there was no set and no other actors (aside from the people with flyers and coffee shop) and they just filmed Will Ferrell running around in character, meaning the guy he mistook as Santa was legitimately just some old dude in red they found who had no clue he was being filmed or who Will was
Fun fact: the way they filmed some of the scenes was perspective filming, where they had Buddy (Will Ferrell) stand closer to the camera than the characters so that he had bigger proportions than the others. Obviously they made sure to edit and refine it so that it looked more clean.
When they were first pitching this movie years ago, they were originally going to cast Jim Carrey as Buddy. Now I love Jim Carrey, but I don't think the movie would have been half as good without Will Ferrell's childlike glee. He plays oblivious innocent so well and it's very endearing.
Fun Fact: The stop motion animals and elf costumes were meant to be a huge tribute to Rankin Bass, who did the classic Christmas animations during the 60s and 70s, but they was so much similarly the entire movie was almost shut down. Buddy almost wore a blue costume, instead of green. 😱
Ming Ming, the elf floor manager who tells Buddy he isn’t “a cotton headed ninny-muggins”, is played by Peter Billingsley who mostly is a producer but most famously played Ralphie in a Christmas Story.
I hope they understood that it was her biggest insecurity and established fear so her doing it means a lot cause its been established in the script and it's through her singing how she and buddy really connected albeit after an awkward shower scene...that plus the holdiays led her to ask him what he was doing so they had dialogue... women love when men show interest...it was earnest and naive not on purpose that he was there..she realized he was drawn in by her voice not to look at her body...her singing voice she is insecure about others hearing but loves to do anyways when she's alone in the shower
I love this entire film, but my favourite part is always seeing James Caan almost break character when Buddy does the magic trick with the cotton ball at the doctors (lil smirk) and him hide his laugh when Buddy gets pricked it’s hard to notice but it’s clear he found it funny 😂
The stop motion and outdoor north pole shots are a nod to the 1960s Ruldolph special you should absolutely react to. The actor who plays Buddy’s dad is Sonny from The Godfather and Paul from Stephen King’s Misery - no wonder he’s so grumpy.
Zoey Deschanel doesn't just have a good voice, she has a FANTASTIC voice. You should check out her band, She & Him. Songs like 'Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?', and 'In The Sun'. A voice like happy velvet.
My grandpa was really uncomfortable/in pain etc in the few years up until he passed. One thing that always made him laugh was comedy christmas movies. The home alone hijinx. And specifically in this movie, the jack in the box scene and the racoon hug scene always cracked him up. I love these movies for giving us those moments with my grandpa.
LOVE love this movie ❤️💚❤️💚 it’s just so funny and wholesome. I always liked her character, but watching it as an adult, the step Mom is the absolute MVP
I'm glad to see someone else caught that reference! That moment always makes me laugh, it's such an obvious duplication of that Patterson Bigfoot footage.
The fact Buddy came from the North Pole and got all the way to New York without getting lost is impressive like did Santa give him a Map or a compass or something?
The Gimbles manager was actually supposed to be played by Wanda Sykes and she had to drop out , if you look at his name tag you’ll see the name Wanda on there. Faizon Love who played him as a shout out to Wanda who he knew from being a stand up comic himself had the idea to keep the name tag.
The news clip about a strange man dressed as an elf in Central Park is a shout out to the famous Bigfoot clip where he looks over his shoulder like that.
New York can be both super cold businessman persons and spontaneous wacky good hearted people so you can believe that New Yorkers would come together and start singing a christmas song, especially if it was headed by Zooey Deschanel. It's the perfect place for Buddy to drop in unexpectedly to create hijinx situations.
The elf in the red outfit with the six white puffs on his jacket and wearing glasses is the actor who played Ralphie in the movie A Christmas story, he also executive produced the movie Iron man and he works with Jon Favreau a lot.
Glad you liked it, it really is just an enjoyable cute Christmas movie. It’s funny, stupid, and lovable. I watch it every Christmas Eve along with Polar Express and The Santa Claus 2.
My family and I just watched this for the millionth time the other day on Christmas Eve. It never gets old. Fills you with not only holiday cheer but joy in general. An absolute classic.
I keep my eyes on articles about people meeting their biological parents because of my job. I read one where the dude dressed as Buddy and sang the awkward “I’m with my dad” song when they met at the airport. No, the father did not know about Elf.
I honestly forgot that I saw this in theaters until earlier this month lol. It feels so long ago. Thinking about James Caan in The Godfather vs this movie really is hilarious. 😅 Buddy would have a much more rude awakening if Sonny was his dad.
Fun fact about this movie, while being shot, the budget was so low that the people, traffic and everything you see randomly around buddy in the city was real people "not paid actors/extras and yes that includes the man in a red suit he runs up to on a crossing" 🤣
I think the snowman at the start is an homage to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, because there was a very similar character that was the narrator in it. Also, RIP Ed Asner (Santa) and Carl in Up. It's a little raunchy and rated R, but Bad Santa is a good watch and has a good character arc
the part with the jack in the box the director had it rigged up to where it went off when he pushed a button so will had no idea when it would go off so his jump sxcares are 100% real
Great reaction guys. It has great Christmas vibes although it's not my favourite...but it was a lot of fun seeing you both have a good time with this. I love James Caan too and he's a really great well rounded actor who can do both drama and comedy. The other comedy film I loved him in was 'Mickey Blue Eyes' with Hugh Grant, also fun :)
Zoey Deschanel recorded a cover of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Leon Redbone (who plays Leon the Snowman) for this film. I always watch the credits just to listen to it.
I was so excited to see this... my favorite reactors reacting to my favorite Christmas movie!! And neither of you had seen it! This was so much fun, I think I'll watch it again 🙂
this was my grandma's favorite christmas movie. my soon to be 11 yr old daughter loves this movie and she has a shirt with buddy on it and has a saying on it i can't remember what it says. i love this movie and Christmas vacation and Grinch with Jim Carrey
Fun fact: This movie didn't have a very high budget, so all those New Yorkers weren't extras, but real people! They really had Will Ferrel go around dressed like that, go up to random people, and do all that in public. So everyone's reactions are completely real!
if you wanted to react to another animated Christmas film, like the polar express, I would recommend Disney's a Christmas carol if you haven't seen it yet!
Can't believe you've never seen the Rankin Bass shows - the elves in this movie are spot on! I recommend the Netflix show as well. Great background on a lot of classic movies. Happy Holidays 🎄✌️
I used to watch this movie every year as a kid/teenager I loved it, it must have watched it ever year for 5 years in a row and I never got sick of it, that and the simpsons Christmas specials or even the pilot episode of the simpsons which is arguably a Christmas special itself
If you were a fan of Waffle Crisp cereal before it went away, go to like Walmart and get the Elf cereal themed on this movie for Christmas. It's so damn good and taste just like it.
There is a Netflix series called how the movies were made. There are 3 seasons. It has Elf, Die Hard, etc. If Netflix give you permission, maybe you can react to the series. I love this series and it is education. You can do the ones you have watched only if wanted.
I remember when this movie first came out, I didn't bother going to see it in the theaters because the ads made it look really stupid. But it's actually a darn good Christmas movie! I think the best one made in recent years.
This became a real Christmas spirit, feel good movie for us. Watch it every year. You should watch Arthur Christmas too. Another we added to out Xmas watch list.

That's amazing!
No way this is true
@@anonymousnguyen it is
@@squeebers so will ferrell just had a fight with a random guy?
@@anonymousnguyen Not that Santa. The Santa on the street

Now imagine will Ferrell as the grinch 🤣
Elf would have been a much easier movie to film. I agree that will ferrell suits this part better though.
@@heisenb3rg Idk, I don't know if that would work...

Thanks for that bit of trivia....now to rewatch the scene with that new knowledge.
He's also in The first Ironman movie and in Spider-Man Far From Home.
@@anthonydean1743 he shouldn’t be anywhere near superheroes…they might shoot his eye out
He was also in 4 Christmases.
@@anthonydean1743 Damn, you beat me to it. At least he knows now. Thank you.
New drinking game, take a shot everytime James says "Oh dang!" 😂
No thanks I value my liver😂
Drink when you hear:
- oh dang
- let’s go
- no way
Waterfall: hands on top of head
Buddy and Jovie named their daughter after Buddy's mother. You can see Susie written on her hat at the end.
The best way to spread christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!

Buddy's elf outfit is almost identical to the outfit Herbie and the head elf wear in Rudolph.
The spaghetti scene where buddy puts all that candy on the spaghetti it took 2 takes bc the first time he ate it he threw up
That’s good to know about fun facts.

I watched this before I went to work today. It’s one of my favourites. Mary Steenburgen is so great, love her in everything.
She is really great, I love that she and Will Ferrell went on to play mother and son in Step Brothers after playing stepmother and stepson in Elf.
I agree. I bet if Santa and the elves had prepped him enough for the modern world, everything wouldn’t have gone south for Buddy
The head elf with the glasses is Peter Billingsley, who played the kid in "A Christmas Story."
You are correct, James. 'It's a Wonderful Life' IS the best Christmas movie of all time! ❤ 🎄
Lol on Patreon now
I always liked the subtle nod to the famous bigfoot film when he’s walking in the park.
I'm glad to see someone else caught that reference! That moment always makes me laugh, it's such an obvious duplication of that Patterson Bigfoot footage.
This is the highest rated Will Ferrell movie on RT, 90%.
The fact Buddy came from the North Pole and got all the way to New York without getting lost is impressive like did Santa give him a Map or a compass or something?
It's impossible to not laugh during this movie! Happy holidays, guys!
This is a very sweet and endearing movie and Will Ferrell's child like enthusiasm was perfect.
Loved it

So is my mother.
same. i always watch it 2 times every December every year
My town this month did Elf the Musical, and I did the lighting for the entire show! The guy who played buddy looked and acted just like Will Ferrell!

"Santa's the only other human." DEBATEABLE. "The Night Before Christmas" calls him "a jolly old elf." He's obviously immortal, if nothing else.
Never saw this movie until a week or so ago. Didn't think I'd like it, but it's so much fun and so cute!
One of my favorite Jon Favreau films is called "Zathura." So sad, it never seems to get recognition.
I keep my eyes on articles about people meeting their biological parents because of my job. I read one where the dude dressed as Buddy and sang the awkward “I’m with my dad” song when they met at the airport. No, the father did not know about Elf.
The father stars in a movie called 'Misery' that's an extremely good film you'll both enjoy if you haven't seen it already.
A bookstore I use to work for sold The same book Buddie Elf read to the kids for the Holidays-pretty colors.
I honestly forgot that I saw this in theaters until earlier this month lol. It feels so long ago. Thinking about James Caan in The Godfather vs this movie really is hilarious. 😅 Buddy would have a much more rude awakening if Sonny was his dad.

Another amazing Will Farrell movie that you could react to is Stranger Than Fiction.

PS Buddy's Dad is Sonny from The Godfather!
And Paul Sheldon from Misery :-)
They mentioned that.

I really hope you guys watch "Christmas Vacation" if you haven't seen it already. Its a classic!
I'm pretty sure I heard that in 5:14 They actually scared him while filming. Cause they could randomly pop them up and got a genuine reaction.

if you wanted to react to another animated Christmas film, like the polar express, I would recommend Disney's a Christmas carol if you haven't seen it yet!
Another good one is Christmas with the Kranks with Tim Allen is also a good one.
"Sorry to interrupt your first big news segment, Charlotte..." 🤣🤣 What a nob.
I actually have a Buddy the elf T-shirt and matching Christmas leggings 😂 I’m so like Buddy lol 😊❤
Another good movie that takes place during Christmas leading up to New years eve 1999 is, End of Days! If you can squeeze it in it's worth it.
Can't believe you've never seen the Rankin Bass shows - the elves in this movie are spot on! I recommend the Netflix show as well. Great background on a lot of classic movies.
Happy Holidays 🎄✌️
Fun fact: 8:24 the guy in the red that Buddy thought was Santa 🎅 actually wasn’t an actor
Thanx 4 soo much great content guys!👍 Really appreciate ya's!😉 Much love from Aus all & be safe 🤗xo 💜🇦🇺
I hope you watch Fred Clause. One of my favorites lol.

I gotta hand it to the Gimbels manager for stepping in as the new toy store Santa. His mood seems to improve after that.
