  • I know that not everyone feels that they need something like an SPR, but there's something to be said about having something setup to make sure that you can touch anything between 0 and 600 meters. This makes it too easy.

      Building something similar using a Burris fullfield 2.5-10 with the E3 reticle. Ballistics calculator says the reticle should get me pretty close to hash marks on 1, 2, 3 and 4. 1:8. It’s extremely accurate with 77gr. I haven’t tried any other weight yet. Leaving in 30min to hit range. Had to pull scope and rail off so I’m going sight it in again. Bringing some other weights to test. Also bringing my 14.5” BCM MK2. Just put a PA GLX 1-10 LPVO on top. Hopefully it’s worth double the price of their SLX lineup.

    My favourite rifle is a 6mm ARC that's built around a 16" barrel.
    Regarding bipods, I find that when you need one, you need one, but they are a serious pain in the ass when you don't. I have a Valhalla, and it has a little male-end adapter on the handguard. When I need a bipod, I take it off my pack and slip it on, quick and quiet. When I don't, because it's getting hung up on everything as I walk with it slung, or I don't want so much weight out front because I'm shooting offhand, it's stuck in the water bottle pouch on the side of my pack.
    That's a pretty hot-looking build, though. Nicely done.

    For civil unrest you need a short barrel, 14.5in medium profile barrel like the M4s the military uses so you can negotiate corners. The optic for close quarters up to 100 yards should be a red dot, holographic sight or illuminated LPVO 1x8 for medium range. Your reticle is a chevron not horse shoe. A Precision rifle should have 24 inches for higher round speed and heavy barrel for repeatability so the barrel does not open the shots after 5 shots, but is not something you want to lumber around.

    Looks like you need to rattlecan a sponge and dab your wml and you can help the camo by sponge patting with a rattlecan and rough sponge or even balled up newspaper to create splotches and break up the hard lines a little bit. Otherwise, it looks like a solid build and I dig the paint job. If you're happy with the pattern, great. In south Florida I'd break up the lines but to each their own.

    Why would someone want an SPR? To me this is a silly question. I think an SPR should nearly EVERYONES first AR 15!!!
    From a SHTF standpoint: You will NOT be clearing rooms like a Navy SEAL or in Call of Duty...you will want to keep people FAR away from family, home, food and ammo.
    If later you want to get a 13.9 or 10.5" fine, have a ball. But I think an SPR should be your first rifle. No question
    *Optic:* The Primary Arms GLX 2-10 and 3-18, Athlon Helos, Vortex Strike Eagle and a few others seem to be the popular scopes for SPR's but I think the Vortex Razor LHT 4-22x weighing only 21oz is criminally underrated in this genre. You will likely run an offset or piggy back red dot so having 4-22x rather than 12x, 16x or 18x is HUGE!! Give it a look. I am not Vortex lover but their razor line is legit!!

    I also prefer the primary arms acss scopes for my dmr’s. But I got rid of my 18” 5.56 and 18” 6.5 Grendel dmr and just went with a 16” 5.56 with a lpvo and a 16” 6.5 Grendel with the 4-14x primary arms hud dmr reticle as my dmr. I loved the thought of an 18” or maybe even a 20” 5.56 dmr until I built one and realized yea it’ll get out there to 600-650yds and even farther really but if there is any kind of wind you better be well practiced if you plan on hitting your target. Which I can do on a flat range but still at those distances the 223/5.56 is hitting like a 22 magnum essentially. I found the 6.5 Grendel to do much better and with 90-123gn bullets it hits much harder. I mostly run 105gn sgk and 107gn smk. I started with an 18” but found there really isn’t much loss dropping to a 16”. I feel a 16” Grendel is easily a 600-700yd rifle and I usually keep the 5.56 work under 400yds is why I went with an lpvo on it. Just gotta bite the bullet and stock up on 6.5 Grendel ammo is really the only negative I see. I’ve been shooting the Grendel for almost a decade now so I have plenty of ammo stocked up plus tons of reloading components. But definitely if I wasn’t able to go with a 6.5 Grendel for a dmr/spr it would be an 18-20” 5.56 with 75/77 grain ammo. Or the 73gn eld is actually my preferred longer range 5.56 bullet of choice

    I noticed you removed the red dot at some points. Where you having issues with it? The issue I ran into was spent casing being ejected at the glass. I got a polymer killflash cap from OneHundredConcepts and a cage so the rifle could be laid down on that side (or dropped) and protect the red dot.

    Match conditioned AR’s have been capable out to 1000 yards with as issued BDC iron sights since about 1995 as proven in NRA Long Range Competition, Service Rifle Division. This is prone sling supported competition. All that’s needed is a rifle fitted with a float tube, match grade barrel, and a hi-speed 2 stage trigger. Then attend Small Arms Firing School for some training to get you credentials to enter NRA LR events.

    im really going back and forth on barrel length. 16, 18 or 20. I know the pros and cons of each, leaning 16 or 20, feel like 18 is stuck in the middle, and when i consider 16 or 20, the 20 inch starts to feel quite a bit longer than i want.. and a 16" precision oriented barrel would likely do 99% of what id need.

      I agree that 16” will do most of what this will do. I’ve shot at 600m with my 13.9” as well. It just doesn’t have as much energy at the target. But that’s my general purpose rifle.

    • @Addictedtosteel
      @Addictedtosteel 6 місяців тому +2

      I've got an 18" and my buddy as a 16", both in 5.56. The difference in our DOPE is negligible. We've both shot them past 1100 yards with good results. The rifle length gas is nice on the 18", but if you're gonna run a can the 16" is nice to keep the length down. More important than length though is getting a good quality barrel. I'd much rather have an accurate 12.5" barrel than a 20" barrel with poor accuracy, regardless of the range I'm shooting. It doesn't matter what the bullet is doing at the target if you can't hit it.

    • @matthewminch5894
      @matthewminch5894 Місяць тому +1

      You can make it work but its not going to be as practical as something with a FFP mil reticle. You can get the Burris XTRII 3-15x, for not much more than what your signature is. Athlon has some decent options at reasonable price points as well if your looking to test the waters on the long range stuff without coughing up $2k + for a scope.

      @lordvader5246 Місяць тому

      @@matthewminch5894 great response. I think I will just “make it work” for now but if/when I start working with a team and I need to communicate with them more effectively then I’ll probably switch to the mil scope.

    • @matthewminch5894
      @matthewminch5894 Місяць тому +1

      @@lordvader5246 You can def use it for now, but for a SPR setup (competition use, longer engagement first round impacts) a FFP reticle is pretty critical. Being able to precisely dial or hold over for different engagement distances across your entire magnification range is critical for shooting small targets accurately at distance. The BDC reticles get you close 400 yards and in but dont offer much past that distance. If you are looking for something that just looks cool and want to go plink around then what you have is fine. If you want to get into the world of true precision shooting then I would sell that scope and get into a FFP now and start training with it. I have a cheap Athlon 4x14x FFP scope on my SPR rifle, its not the best but i paid under $300 for it and its adequate out to 800 yards which for a 556 gun is about the limit of practicality. There are tons of videos on ballistics out there and how that all works. Beware its addicting and gets expensive quick though.

    • @lordvader5246
      @lordvader5246 Місяць тому

      @matthewminch5894 do you pair your optic with anything like a range finder in order to get more accurate inputs for the shooting equation? Also, do you dial or do you just use the mildots and hold?

    • @matthewminch5894
      @matthewminch5894 Місяць тому +1

      @@lordvader5246 Yes and no for both. If time permits a range finder is a great tool and will be the most accurate. With precision shooting the more variation you can eliminate the better. You can also learn how to estimate range using the reticle (hence my recommendation for a FFP optic in MIls or MOA. If its a FFP either will work you just need to learn the calculations. Knowing the exact range for multiple targets is useful and you can build a dope card and just use the holds if your under time pressure. For targets past 500 yards or so I will typically dial and for targets 500 and in I typically hold because the drops are pretty consistent with my rifle from 100-500 yards. every gun and cartridge is different. Dialing is nice because you can just hold dead center and hold off for wind (or you can dial that too if you want). Wind changes a lot so i typically just hold left or right based on the wind call. Multiple targets under time constraint usually ill just use the holds.

    If you’re shooting 700 meters, why would you limit yourself to a 5.56/.223? Even if you are using 77gr sierra’s, why not just bump up to a more capable .308 and extend your range/performance? Yes they are heavier, and you get to carry less rounds, but if you’re building a “precision” designated marksman type rifle, don’t you want to actually be able to reach out farther than the guy next to you with a standard m4?
