Thanks so much BMAC! did this to my golf and it completely transformed my car! idles smoother, much more power and better fuel economy! I guess this sensor was telling the ECU all sorts of incorrect readings! £33.80 from VW well worth it!
After replacing the HT leads on the advice of the RAC mechanic (cost about £50) I still had rough running so started a search on the internet where I found your video. After fitting a replacement sensor the misfire has gone and also the heater is working properly again. The only hassle was when I was doing the switch over. I pulled out the faulty sensor but when I tried to quickly insert the new one it wouldn't go straight in. The old O ring was wedged in there and I lost a fair amount of coolant while probing around to remove it before I could put the new one in place. That meant I had to top up the system with water and antifreeze but a minor inconvenience overall. Thanks a lot for your clear explanation and demonstration. It will get me brownie points with my wife when she gets back in the car. It's a 2001 Polo 1.0 by the way.

Excellent video. Twice I've had problems with my mk4 1.6 Last year, sometimes it wouldn't start after a journey and the temp gauge was always on zero. AA man diagnosed coolant temp sensor issue and I watched your video on how to replace one. The mistake I made was not getting a genuine part, as exactly one year to the day the sensor went again, this time I was getting a false overheating reading on the temp gauge and 'check coolant service manual' warning. Again AA man said engine wasn't overheating. Got a genuine part this time and working good as new now. I've learned my lesson.

Thanks for the vid. Have a Polo 1.2 and just done the swap. Its in a similar location to the Golf in this video and removal/fitting is the same. Tip I would say is when removing the old one and sticking new one the old ring can still be stuck in there so you will have to stick your fingers in to remove as I had with mine. And make sure you wear gloves and car is stone cold.

Thanks for the video my car is running rather smoothly but the temp gauge is showing no value most of the time, I think the sensor is faulty BUT when inspecting it I also noticed the wiring was badly hurt, actually it even broke the minute I touched it, I solder back everything together and protected the wiring correctly, I will change the sensor and hope my issue is the sensor and not the wiring.

Great information I've been having starting problems with my polo symptoms seemed the same as some of the tutorials I've watched so I changed coolant temperature sensor a few weeks ago not had problems since, cheers well pleased.

Excellent video and videos. I have a VW Polo 1.4 (petrol) from 2005. It starts perfectly in the morning but if the car is parked more than like 30 minutes and less than 6 hours then I need to hold on extra long for the car to start. Morning start is less than 1-2 seconds and delayed start takes about 3-4 seconds - do you think changing the coolant temperature sensor could help? Many thanks in advanced.

Great VID. I am getting TERRIBLE working engine in very cold mornings. Misfiring or what feels like a misfire, hitching and stumbling, loss of power. Warmer mornings....hardly anything or once the car warms just the odd little hitch. Trying this next. Replaced camshaft positioning sensor.....NO luck....NO codes, plugs are nice and white so don't think it is a plug or coil....spark plug would show signs of fouling???
Good video, except he forgets to show to reinstall the C holding clip. Without this clip the sensor can (and probably will) slip out and you will lose a lot of coolant before you get stranded an the side of the road somewhere
I cleaned the throttle body on my polo 6n and the idle jumped to 2000revs.. Thought it just needs to relearn the idle position, but it turned out to be the coolant sensor! The mechanic that i took it to for vag com TB alingment said to me straight on i need a new TB (which costs 300€), which seemed to work fine to me, so really, if you have any problems with how the engine runs, it pays to check the coolant temp sensor.
BMAC VAGS ive got a 1.6 Petrol Bora so its pretty much the same as this 1.4 Golf (i own a 1.4 golf too), my temp gauge reads cooler the faster i drive.what do you recommend i replace.
Always test it before buying one if you have a multimeter set to ohms mode and (for this one) put the probes between terminals C and D on the sensor, room temperature mine was reading OL and 850 ohms across A and B - totally screwed when C and D should be reading 1500 - 2500 ohms at nice room temp
BMAC VAGS i bought an mk3 golf 1.6 with 101 hp. the car has a problem with v the cooling temp. When its running stationary the temp goes normal to the haf and when I drive in the highway the temp drops... is this an thermostat problem or a coolingsensor? and when i am parking and im turning my steering i hear an cracking noise like an old door that opens slowly... is this the steering joint?

BMAC VAGS I firstly ordered one of the sensors but it wasnt genuine. I fitted it as per your video. For a week everything was good. Then day 8 after 10 mins driving the temp gauge would fly up to max, then back to 90, then back to max with the temp warning light flashing...and so on. I checked and coolant level was fine as was oil. Lesson learned. Just now i have gone and fitted a genuine one (should have listened to you first!! haha) All went well (havent driven it yet). It leaked a tiny bit once i clipped it, but a wiggle and all seems well. From under the car looking up, i can see part of the brass/copped part of the sensor (like it isnt seated properly)... but from above it looks like its in straight. Could you confirm that the copper/brass is visible from the side facing the rear of the car from underneath for me???? It will put my mind at rest haha. Thanks again! you star

im gno try this today. The temperature on the temp gauge keeps on going up. The fan that keeps the engine cool isnt working at all really dont knw what the problem is but I orderd a temperature sensor frm ebay so gno try that out to see if it solves the problem. I have a seat ibiza 2001 iv heard its the same as 2001 polo, fingers crossed!!
The copys are really bad! i had change this sensor 3 times with an aftermarket. And every time the car runs too rich. Now i replaced it for an original. and it runs great!

Recently ive noticed a bad smell when i turn the air conditioning on. I called the mechanic and he says he has not replaced or touched the filters. Im not sure what to do now...any suggestions?
My 96 999cc Polo had an oil leak. Now fixed, but now idle is 2000 to 2500rpm. It's gone mad! Could it be the coolant sensor. So far I have replaced the throttle body, which is now disconnected so its really rough to drive, but at least the thirst has gone down a bit and she's not revving at the lights and upsetting pedestrians!

I've searched high & low online for a retailer here in Ireland selling the "real McCoy". Loads of new spurious parts from countless brands which are compatable but for the life of me I can't find a genuine VW coolant temperature sensore online! Where to you shop for your VW parts? Do you have a favourite online reailer I might be able to buy from and have shipped over? Many thanks.
Think mine has gone. Plugs get flooded, sometimes feels like dropping cylinders sometimes. Start problems, especially when warm. Guage sits top dead though

It is only when i turn the AC on. Because of the smell i just use the blower fan. When the AC is on it smells like poop. Its not really petrol but smells really bad. Its smells like rubbish. The mechanic said he changed the oil and air filter.... Im guessing somthing dirty got on it? Or its the wrong way around?
I would say so. If the temp gauge is stuck on zero all the time, or it's going to the red zone falsely (get garage to check the engine isn't actually overheating on this first) giving you a false overheating reading then likely to be the sensor. Get a genuine part to replace it though.
My mark 4 (1999) Golf indicates a coolant temp at around 60 degrees while cruising in cold weather (about 10 degrees ambient or lower). Noticed this after I replaced the radiator after a minor crash. The new radiator has a higher fin density. Could it be that the new radiator is too efficient?
As soon as I replaced the new Coolant Temp Sensor I got code P2181. But yet my car still runs at 190 degrees as the normal and I feel no signs of overheating. (AC Works flawlessly etc). I cleared the code twice and within 2 days it comes back as pending. Do I have a defective Temp Sensor? I bought an OEM one.

Bmac would this cause epc light engine management and traction control light to come on, its come up with code p0106 map sensor on my 1.6 16v bcb but I've done all checks on my obd2 and map is fine and only thing a guy is saying is that my intake air temperature is high

I have changed the coolant temperature sensor in a Passat but when I put on the horseshoe clip to keep it in place it clips in place but doesn't hold the sensor in place securely. It does take some force to pull it out but I can pull it out and the engine light has come on again since I placed it. Do I need to replace the rubber O ring or what am I doing wrong?

Why not just do a coolant change at the same time saves hassle of trying to quickly change over and pouring coolant all over.

I'm trying to figure out the trick to getting the clip reinstalled.

Well first seat I've ever owned and I have this for a fault but it certainly explains the vast consumption on fuel and the god awful idle issues

You should try to isolate the problem first, find out if it is a fuel or electrical problem first.
What is the engine size of your vehicle? Have you subscribed?
It is only when i turn the AC on. Because of the smell i just use the blower fan. When the AC is on it smells like poop. Its not really petrol but smells really bad. Its smells like rubbish. The mechanic said he changed the oil and air filter.... Im guessing somthing dirty got on it? Or its the wrong way around?

I would say so. If the temp gauge is stuck on zero all the time, or it's going to the red zone falsely (get garage to check the engine isn't actually overheating on this first) giving you a false overheating reading then likely to be the sensor. Get a genuine part to replace it though.

My mark 4 (1999) Golf indicates a coolant temp at around 60 degrees while cruising in cold weather (about 10 degrees ambient or lower). Noticed this after I replaced the radiator after a minor crash. The new radiator has a higher fin density. Could it be that the new radiator is too efficient?
is this the sensor that is connected to the gauge on the dashboard? Mine is not working and I have iddling issues.
As soon as I replaced the new Coolant Temp Sensor I got code P2181. But yet my car still runs at 190 degrees as the normal and I feel no signs of overheating. (AC Works flawlessly etc). I cleared the code twice and within 2 days it comes back as pending. Do I have a defective Temp Sensor? I bought an OEM one.

What do you call the part it is connected to with all the hoses going into it? Part of mine is cracked and leaking but I don’t know how to figure out what the entire part is called
I have done this but the gauge Dashboard is not registering temperature any idea why I replaced this part thinking it would fix this problem
Would this be able to fix a fluctuating temp gauge ? I have an issue with my golf mk4 where the gauge fluctuates between 0 and 90 quite often. Would I also need to flush the coolant ?

I have changed the coolant temperature sensor in a Passat but when I put on the horseshoe clip to keep it in place it clips in place but doesn't hold the sensor in place securely. It does take some force to pull it out but I can pull it out and the engine light has come on again since I placed it. Do I need to replace the rubber O ring or what am I doing wrong?

Thought you might have replaced the O ring, just to be on the safe side.
