It is amazing how the color makes them feel so much closer to thw new designs while keeping the Gen1 charm.
The colors really bring out shading the originals already had. Just didn’t pop as much in noir.

I love how with minor edits and some colour a lot of these original red and blue sprites go from acceptable to good.

It's funny how adding color to some of them makes them look way better, while for others the derpiness can't be contained no matter what

@@Calvansbagoftricks It's alright, but it felt like the spriter gave up halfway. A lot of the beginning Pokémon are colored real nice, but then a lot of the late-game stuff is pretty shoddy.

Genuinely astonishing how using the Pokémon Blue sprites, but coloured, really brings them all to life that little bit more. Lovely work.
It's just the lack of color that makes some of them look uncanny, this is pretty amazing.

Growing up with red and blue, I thought so many looked awful, even as a kid. It’s amazing how adding color shows the sprites aren’t bad.

Red&Blue is kind of a shit game but it's sprites are overhated.
Tbh I really like the gastly lines early design, but seeing them i color... i can understand why they changed the design, its the only one I feel got worse when you add color
The Machop evolution line is also awful.

The coloring is done well enough that many of these COULD be Gen3 sprites. Fantastic job.
This is a lot like those colorized vintage photographs and videos, where at first you feel this disconnect due to the lack of color, but then once it's added you're like "oh yeah, these were real people/Pokémon"
It's so cool what a fresh coat of paint did to change the overall tone of the Gen 1 sprites
This is how I always saw them as a kid. Thanks for bringing our old friends back to life!

Shut up and take my money! I want this as a mod for the old games or as a remake with the style of Octopath Traveler.
As a Gen 1 veteran, this is rather satisfying to watch, knowing how limited the original Pokemon games were.
A lot of these are still genuinely excellent sprites. I'd say there still hasn't been a better Gyarados since the one shown here.

The jewels that Staryu and Starmie have weren't supposed to be so dark, they probably used black to make it contrast better.
But honestly... The dark jewel with the red shine looks so much cooler! Its color reminds me of a yemeni agate.
These automatically makes most of them look like Gen3 sprites and that's crazy.
Also, double Big Meaty Claws Kingler, pissed off Gyarados and IMMA CUT YA Scyther are dope ass sprites.

I always loved the og sprites best and seeing them in color confirms that they hold up, and in many cases beat out the newer ones that have come out over the years. Thanks for putting in the work to show us these!
I grew up with old school gen 1 and like the classic black & white. I still play gen 1 to this day
Amazing Work. Really interesting to see this kind of perspective on the older Pokémon designs, color seems to spark new life into them. Especially the OG Porygon sprite. XD

Was holding my breath and shaking in my boots waiting for Dewgong's turn, my god what a drastic change in color
So many of these go from looking wack to being normal or even awesome just by adding color!
A few of them felt like straight nerfs though. The Ghastly line and Snorlax imo looked better the way they were. Also Seaking looks kinda crazy 😅

I actually think Ghastly and Gengar look decent enough, but Haunter looks so weirdly goofy with the diffrent contrast...
I did this myself to a handfull of them like 10 years ago, I specifically remember having done Blastoise, which is why this video caught my eye, I was shocked by how good these sprites actually looked in full colour. This brings back so many memories (especially as I lost the ones I did when my old laptop died, on second guess, it might have been 15 years ago, time flies), amazing to see all of them done this time around. Great video. Are you planning in doing Johto as well?
Same here! It was around 2004 I think, sometime before FRLG. I recently discovered the Internet and found out I could see these sprites without playing the game, so my curiosity was led in the same direction, trying to revamp the old sprites. So many hours lost on MS Paint on my parents' computer...
I'm glad you like them! If these videos prove to be popular enough, then I will color GSC sprites with the GBA colors.

Now I want a full-color mod of R/B/Y. I never knew how much the technical limitations of the GameBoy really held this game back in terms of beauty.
I'm surprised there hasn't been one. It would be such a cool way to revisit the retro style.

game boy color lied to me when I was a kid,I was expecting it to look like this with actual color
Blastoise, Rapidash, and Dragonite look stunning and intimidating!
This video is awesome. It shows that most of those old sprites aren't as bad as the lack of detailed color makes them look.
I noticed the only thing separating these sprites from feeling like actual gen 3 sprites is that these recolors still have a lot of dark lines and dark areas that look jarring in full color. Like onix has the REALLY black planes on its body. They're very heavy in a visual sense and it brings me out of it.
It also makes me hyper aware of what exactly makes gen 1 sprites kinda cursed. Like I can't help but notice that there are similarities between the sprite work of marowak and the machop line. There's a lot of doughy-ness to the drawing. Some look unfinished clay figures in full color.
magikarp and gyarados actually look really good. could be sprites from gen 4
These look amazing. The difference is astounding. Not that you could save Marowak, Golbat and the Machop line anyway, but at least you tried. Although I prefer the uncolored Ghastly line, they look way scarier than in newer versions and I loved that as a kid.

I first played yellow, while they had a little different color alteration to them if they ran this up, I'd run that game right back. The color scheme makes this adapt to the newer gen feel

Red and Blue have my favorite sprites, the designs look very natural and carefully shaded, it's pure art.

Colour really makes the legendary birds stand out as distinct from one another. Black and white theyre just busy.
