For everyone wondering, the reason the original sprites look so strange compared to the official designs is because the official artwork of the Pokémon hadn’t been drawn yet. After the game was released, Ken Sugimori finally drew the official artwork for all the monsters, and then Yellow’s sprites were made to reflect the final designs
somebody with actual consence lol
To reflect the anime as well right?
Weird that some sprites like Koffing, Exeggcute, and Cloyster were correct in Japanese Red and Green and then off-model in Blue.

Thanks bro. They dont know the nostalgia
0:22 squirtle is so cute in Blue 💙
Okay, hottest take on the planet:
Golbat's Pokémon Blue sprite... is actually GOOD.
It actually shows what Golbat is invisioned to be: this nasty-looking abomination that jumps you in dank caves
Yellow is weird because they only updated the front sprites. If the backsprites were updated it would have been awesome.
0:07 bro why he standing.
All hail blue's golbat sprite
A very unpopular opinion:
I love the original Mew Sprite
I think it looks exactly what a weird embryo like creature should look like
*bulbous*
he tecniclly doing that weird thing that cats does lol
Agreed!
Yeah, but it wouls be too close to reality and if you spin that on, in an anime/movie this would look horrifying to little children. And that's the target group.
6:51 my three precious children. I love ‘em all equally.
My brother and I, when we were kids, always liked to compare which sprite looked better. I had blue and he had yellow. Blastoise: Yellow, Haunter: Blue and so on.
The transition on some of them between red and blue look like they were just posed in different ways, it's cool that despite the sprites not being so good, they kept some of the aspects like dodrio's scary black eyes
Some of them even feel like they could be animated like in Emerald and Gen 4.
the pokemon green clefable is really good but looks more skinny, also the pokemon blue muk is just amazing, actually looks like a sludge monster that wants to eat you
Fire and Green putting an emphasis on the "Monster" rather than the "Pocket".
I find it fascinating how many Pokémon have their eyes change between R/G/B and Yellow. It makes the older sprites seem almost like beta versions of the actual Pokémon
Because they were lol
Moltres especially
Like, it went from normal eyes, to black beety eyes, and then back to normal eyes again?
There’s something so fascinating and unique about JP R/G that cannot ever be replicated.
i beat pokemon yellow for the first time yesterday which was my first kanto game. it was really cool and the difficulty level was interestingly different from how it is now. the yellow sprite in all these are like them finally making up their minds on what they want the pokemon to look like lol
So much nostalgia seeing all these old sprites, from a bored child to cherishing Pokémon right through to present day.
Some sprites were great from the get-go, and I'd say a few become worse, but the vast majority of them portray an image so much better in yellow versions that it doesn't even look like they have the same resolution
Is nobody gonna talk about How Lapras looks creepy in the japanese pokemon green
VULPIX original sprite is so silly and cute 😭💕💕
Its true❤️😍
I know for the most part theyre the worst but I still think the O.G red and green have the best sprites of the gen 1 games for some pokemon. Specifically I mean Blastoise, Fearow, Nidorina, Parasect, Electrode, Weezing, Magmar, Porygon, Snorlax and Mewtwo
Golbats ‘blue’ sprite is something of nightmares 😆
The dirt on digglet's sprite shows the change in talent best imo, in yellow it is actually a mound of dirt, in the previous versions it is just a mess of dark pixels not even trying to form an image
With few exceptions it almost looks like each is evolving from most to least derp
2:20 I actually like Parasect's Red/Green/Blue design more than the Yellow one.
Funny thing is that the reason Yellow has the better sprites is because it's based off of the actual series
It’s aren’t always the best tho
yellow porygon has seen something
Thank you for this video! This is exactly what I was hoping for when I started typing in the UA-cam search!
It's cool to see the art style go through a revision for the English release, featuring more dynamic poses, and then again for Yellow Version with a flatter art style to mimic the anime.
nuh uh
they just used the third version new sprites and then pasted it in a new engine
@@replasagna8868 That's just...obviously false
@@zetazimmer4769 nuh uhh dont speak with the guy with a rom of pocket monster ao
@@zetazimmer4769 o yeah, and tho the designs of the anime are only the ken sugimoris artwork designs lol
they didnt even mimmick em they are literally em
and tho ken sugimori artwork was made for mimmick the red green designs
Mom: OG Ekans isn't real, it can't hurt you.
OG Ekans: 1:10
Yellow definitely has the best sprites. Many of the original sprites don’t even look like the Pokémon that we know and love. Most look deformed.
yes, because the sprites are made before the artwork
No, blue have the best sprites
Looking "right" and looking interesting or dynamic are entirely different things though. A lot of the older sprites had different appeals in their own right.
@@Svenjax67 definetely yellow
I mean, yeah… no shit
So many of the yellow sprites lack color and definition compared to rgb
I don’t get how they messed up Blastoise’s Blue sprite is the box artwork clearly looks right
I'm so glad Ivysaur & Venusaur got a design overhaul in Japanese Blue/American + European Red & Blue.
Sure it was based on the Beta designs, but i can't imagine what artists might've thought about those designs.
Nidorina actually looks good on all 4 versions surprisingly since it kept it's consistency
Same goes for Nidorino
Nidoqueen from Japanese Red/Green however, was also lifted straight from the Beta versions from 1993-1994
Those early Beta designs are... Worse than what we got
Clefable kept it's consistency too
Cloyster has it's Beta smile and shape left intact
Ghastly is also Beta-like, Same for Japanese Red/Green Gengar
At 1:42, 5:36, and 5:45, I never knew Earthquake, Rhino, and Kango looked like that back then. I only had Pokemon Stadium 1 for the N64 and I never knew these Pokemon which were my favorites looked like that back then.
idc what u say, the red/green diglett, dugtrio, gastly, pikachu, raichu, and tangela sprites look so off in a cute way
Nostalgia ❤
Also Omastar looks like it’s dancing
Yellow has beautiful sprites, but the back ones 💀
In my personal opinion I like the versions of the sprites in Pokémon green more
im with you
@@Endor-Gaming ok
X2. They look more like the original Pocket Monsters artwork which was meant to be closer to vanilla RPG.
I feel some of the older sprites are more serious and intimidating like kingler in blue and dragonite. Some of the yellow sprites definitely look better like flamara but i think pokemon should stay a bit more darker like in the first gens
3:14 Kadabra looks like hes flicking off the bird XD
The nostalgia, ah. My childhood here
Sometimes the third sprite isn't the better ^^
The Pokemon Yellow sprites still look amazing
Proto-Koffing supremacy
Great video
0:33
Is it me or that Metapod Sprite in Red Blue is algo the back sprite but Zoomed In?
I cant believe fat dratini got taken away from us just like that 😭
Ekans was fuckin' POGGING in red and green
To be completely honest, Yellows sprites are alright, but too many are just victims of the R/G backsprites still being used along with there just being less shading, even noticable on the old Gameboy.
I think Red/Green actually has a lot of good sprites like Porygon, Mewtwo and Blastoise in the areas where Blue has worse sprites like Fattoise, Cloyster and Koffing
If the Spaceworld '97 backsprites got used for Blue/International Red it would've been perfectly matching
Not only that, but its a mixed vag when it comes to poses and some look like a mess due to anti-alasing
You guys need to look at how scary chansey looks like Pokémon blue
Me tuve que ver el video tres veces para mirarlos todos osea un total de 453 pokemon pero amarillo es la definitiva
No wonder Mew was so rare. If I was given an original Mew looking like that first one, I'd quit pokemon lol.
Can you do one with the back sprites too? I like these kind of videos
The back sprites didn’t change across any of the versions lol
I want a pokemon game with every sprites available 🐦
Yellow has the most normal lookin ones
It's weird how in some versions, the originals actually had better sprites than either Blue or Yellow, Porygon being the obvious example.
You know, with alot of the Green to Blue sprites the only difference is the pose. 🤔
Why are the sprites flipped on the X axis?
How did Porygon just get worse with every incarnation?
Kingler looks good in all version 4:57
Pokemon red and green butterfree looks like its plotting something
Gen 2 mew two is DOPE
Why does Pokemon yellow look like it was made in Minecraft if you look really close?
Huh..
green red😍❤️
Golbat’s sprite is so f*cking horrifying my goodness
you cant with his goofyness
7:20 The old Dratini sprites had more detail on the scales
yes
I believe Ken's original idea was that Dratini, despite being a reptile, would have the smooth skin of a dolphin.
Yellow has probably the best sprites. Looks like the anime sort of rounded out the designs and perfected them.
Okay but why is Parasect's original sprite so much better than blue and yellow?
Wait, Kanto have 4 version of games? I thought there's only three
Love blue sandshrew
Bro this one go to far 2:07
What the hell did they do to mew in green??
The 'remastered' Blue sprite for Fearow is a downgrade from the Red/Green sprite.
the yellow sprites r actually kinda alright but i would genuinely take most of red & green's over blue & yellow's, theyre so goofy, i can hardly imagine gen 1 w/o them
Vaporeon lost something cool as it's design evolved and settled into what it is now. The R/G and B sprites are way better
water dog
Bruh pokemon blue golbat and pokemon green venusaur tho
the red and green sprites are so chunky..... nidoking....
Now do back sprites!
Wait, you took that video from someone else?
I don’t like the yellow sprites.
This is why Yellow is the definitive version of Gen 1.
I like pokemon red/blue sprites the best yellow was way to overwhelming that's why couldn't play that version it was a little too much plus I didn't like the gameplay at first it was fun but after the first few gym battles I couldn't
I feel it. Pokémon Red and blue are my top favorites ☺️
There was always something 'cheap'-looking about the Yellow sprites to me as a kid. They were more accurate, but less love put into them
Pikachu
0:57 OMggGgHGFGGgGGH!!1!!1!1!2!AlloOOOlAaann RattTatta ANDd raticAT CoNFIRMED??????!1!!1!1!1
I think they're actually based off of the old sprites
How did Porygon get uglier in jp Blue?!
RGB were more interesting. The Yellow sprites based on the official art and amine are boring.
Agreed
Golbat from pokemon blue🤢
Golbat from pokemon red and green😒
Golbat from pokemon yellow is just fixed🤩
you cant…. you arent human….
Red and green have the overall best sprites with a few stinkers.
Blue has terrible poses and a few pokemon that are wrongly designed.
Yellow has nothing that makes it stand out. The colors look muted and the poses are uninteresting.
Yellow had awful sprites, I can't believe people like them just because they look anime accurate. The poses for most of them are so boring. Blue had amazing sprites, while some are better in Green (like Porygon, Rapidash, Kabuto).
RG looks ok, RB looks awful and yellow looks really good
no rg looks beautiful b looks epic yellow looks trash
@@replasagna8868Exactly people's taste now days is too simple. The R/G/B designs have soul to them. The people who like Yellow designs are why we have the oversimplified boring versions of pokemon in the modern 3D games.
