Saag, sag (both pronounced [saːg]) or saga is a leaf vegetable dish eaten in the Indian subcontinent with bread such as roti or naan,[1] or rice (in Assam, Bangladesh, Kashmir, Nepal, Odisha, West Punjab, East Punjab, Tripura and West Bengal). Saag can be made from spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, basella, finely chopped broccoli or other greens, along with added spices and sometimes other ingredients such as paneer.
What Is Saag?
Saag is common in the state of Odisha, where it is eaten with pakhala. In the Shree Jagannath Temple of Puri, saag is one of the dishes offered to Jagannath as part of Mahaprasad. Saag is also common in West Bengal and other regions of North India, where the most common preparation is sarson da saag (mustard plant leaves), which may be eaten with Makki di roti, a yellow roti made with maize flour. Saag aloo (spinach and potato) and saag gosht (spinach and goat) are common dishes in Punjabi cuisine, which are also served in restaurants and takeaways in the Western world (where the goat is commonly replaced with lamb). - Навчання та стиль
Beautiful! But i'm feeling like i want to let the chicken cook in the spices without the spinach first. Then add in the spinach just 2min before switching off stove. So the spinach dont overcook. Really great and healthy recipe! Thank you so much!!
I agree. Though, the taste was exactly what I wanted, the spinach lost that beautiful color it had when I initially added it.
I just got back home after driving a 50 mile round trip to an Indian grocery store to buy all the ingredients to make this recipe. Saagwala is my favorite Indian dish and I always have it when I go to an Indian restaurant.....but this will be my first time making it at home, or any Indian dish for that matter. I've watched quite a few other UA-cam videos for making this dish and yours is the one I've decided to go with because your recipe is no-fuss no-muss and simple. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I made this for my family last night and they absolutely loved it. It was my first Indian dish I've made, and the whole house smelled amazing! I served it with some rice and Lachha Paratha. Luckily I made a double batch, because I can't wait to have some more for lunch! It's now a staple recipe - thank you!
This dish looks absolutely delicious! So healthy too! 👩🏻🍳🍽
I've made this yesterday and my husband loved it. This dish turned out very delicious. I've only made little bit of modification which is which grinding the Palak I've added some coriander leaves and also some green chillies. The dish turned out great. Thanks for the amazing recipe Ma'am
I just followed the recipe as told by you mam and it turned out it very mouth watering. Very simple yet elegant!
THIS IS SO DELI I'm gonna make it again!!! Smita Deo is one of my fav Indian chefs!
I'm watching ur recipe now... & Tomorrow I'm definitely trying this... I loved it.. my husband is health conscious.. so he'll loved it❤️❤️❤️ thank u so much smita ma'am ❤️❤️❤️
I made it this way. Tasted just like I've had it in the best Indian restaurants. Thank you so much for the video!!!
Great recipe, came out really nice. I did use much less water to boil the spinach, and saved it to add to the curry later in order to not throw away all the nutrients with the water. I just put it in with a few ice cubes until the cubes melt and put that water with the spinach into the blender. That way you don't lose tons of good nutrients in the water.
Thank you mam for such a wonderfully delicious recipe......
I just made this and it is wonderful. Definitely a keeper. I did follow Porcupine Crime's suggestion to add the spinach later--and it worked really well.
I tried this recipe and it was a hit!! I didn’t have black cardamom so I used cloves! But other than that I followed the recipe to a tee.
Chicken Saagwala is my favourite curry. Thanks for the recipe!

Welcome :)
Wow🥰👌
I thought this recipe would be messy to eat when I first made it, but it's no messier than any other chicken dinner I eat with my hands. :)
Wow :))
Nice one chef :)
Nice recipe, it tastes awesome......keep good work
I made this dish tonight, and used black cumin seeds (shahi jeera) as she instructed. Thank goodness I tasted the masala before I put the chicken in - it was disgustingly bitter! I tasted a few of the black cumin seeds, and it was the culprit. Thank goodness I did not waste the chicken. I am going to redo this tomorrow with regular cumin seeds. Unfortunately I wasted over an hour with preparations and masala cooking. . . oh well, lesson learnt!
telling from the disgusting taste comment, it is obvious you were sold kali zeeri instead of kalazeera. The kali zeeri is horrible in taste, same thing happened to me. Just forgo the shah zeera part and use ordinary safed zeera and you will be fine.
Thank you! :-) That's exactly what I did - and the recipe was fabulous!
Hindi sabse acha tarika ji recipe batane ka

Thank you . I will do that with chicken fillets. 🇬🇧
Ladyship my favorite channel ur alllllllllll........ recipes very yummy like my mother I m from multan PAKISTAN
Love the presentation! Question: In the video, one of the whole spices you mentioned was black cumin seeds. Are these "Shah Jeera" seeds (Caraway seeds) or standard "Jeera" seeds (Common cumin seeds)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Marcus - just wanted to give you my take, as I just tried to make this using black cumin seeds (shahi jeera) as she mentioned in the videos. It was so bitter, I had to throw the entire masala away. I'm so glad I tasted it before I put the chicken in! Actually, shahi jeera (Bunium Bulbocastanum) is not the same as caraway seeds (which is Carum Carvi), though often confused. I guess it's more commonly used in smaller quantities in spice mixes, where the bitterness is tempered by the addition of other spices - but alone, and in this quantity - it made the dish absolutely inedible! I'm going to retry using regular cumin tomorrow :-)
see my comments above
3:23 most satisfying moment.
Indeed. :-)
Wow it looks very yummy. But after eating the dish only I can make comments about tastes. I feel I should roast chicken for some times so that spices are well absorbed by the chicken
BTW. You're awesome!!!
THIS LOOK BUSSIN BRUH
Very Nice Didi
Is there anytime I can strain out the leaves etc?
Give me any typical spinach tarkari and I hate it but give me Palak Murgh and I will not leave a single hint of that gravy on my plate. Here's a fantastic dish for all us veggie haters to get some goodness in without troubling moms.
What can I use instead of curd? Or could I find curd at an Indian supermarket? Saagwala is one of my favourite Indian dishes and trying to make it myself for the whole family because restaurants are a little too expensive right now. 😊
Can you please tell me what is the mixer you are using, what make is it
Ma’am you are amazing😍
Trust me i got hobby of cooking just because of you and every time i try your receipe i turned out perfect 👏👏👏
What’s the cream at the end? Is it yogurt or just normal cream
Anyone knows the background soundtrack?
Your recipe asked for "2 tbsp. Chilli powder." Are you sure it wasn't supposed to be teaspoons? I put only 1 tbsp and it was too hot to eat. Have looked at several other videos and they all had teaspoon measurements for chili. Do you think you could edit your details so others won't make the same mistake, Cheers,
You eyes are so beautiful n voice also.
Nice RECEIPE..but we cn use Spinach water as well instead of using normal water ..
Otherwise awesome RECEIPE 🤩🤩👌👌
how can i cook without leaves and the other stuff
Does blanching the spinach retain the green color?
Plz tell ur garam masala ingredients
McCormick actually makes a pretty good garam masala. It tasted just like one that I had made myself.
it's a complicated recipe real long but good
u r lazy
Where can I get the cream from?
A cow
No doubt, it's good but I'm not sure about the garam masala part
The chicken here need not be marinated ???
Looks amazing, would you like to come to australia and have a husband
What about water in which spinach was boiled? Nutrients wasted? Sorry I mean the dish looks delicious and I will try it soon but I think adding that water back to have some gravy would retain the nutrients.
Common misconception. Blanching spinach doesn't remove the nutrients. Fully boiling it for awhile can, but not a quick blanch. In the case of spinach, blanching kills some of the enzymes that cause it to wilt quickly, but more importantly it reduces the large amount of soluble oxalates that can block you from absorbing some of the other minerals in the spinach. The short time in the water is too quick for the other vitamins & minerals to leech out as they take time. So in effect, blanching actually enhances the nutritional value.
Shouldn't you be adding Garam Masala at the end of the dish?
Is that palak
Chitra Kumaravel yes spinach is palak
Bhavya Srivastava thank you 😊
I made this dish yesterday but unfortunately the dish turned out dark green checked on Google the palak should be blanched only for 30 secs n then plunged in icewater for 2 mins. Sometimes homecooks should give correct info re their tips or cooking
saag chicken bolkay palak chicken ko recipe daal di maam aapne.. both are differenf things😂
This recipe seems to include too much spice and not enough spinach. Also, it doesn’t match the recipe in the description. For example, the video says 2 teaspoons of chili powder, but the recipe calls for 2 tablespoons (way too much).
Hi ma'am
1' St view
first like
Been long time I heard word blanching !!! It’s seam like if some one is in a jewelry store and telling I am just looking… or an other person comes and told I am gazing… ??? Same message and meaning but second should be fucked …
That was a really elegant recipe.
But don't you think that it was be better to let the chicken cook in the spice and marsala mix and add the spinach at the last stage.? Overcooking spinach destroys the vitamins and iron in it
Jaisekhar Nair that is wrong. You cannot destroy the iron. Actually cooked greens give of iron easier as it is bound to fibres that breaks down in heat and is easier to absorb in your small intestine.
@@silverkorv great
I got this from a Pakistani restaurant but this looks nothing like it.
Be careful! Video states 2 tsp chili powder
Drop down recipe states 2 Tbsp chili powder
Aap kha na aacha banate ho
Where's Bombay cheffff
Bharath Galla in Bombay
am sorry hindi punjabi ch labhda c 🙏
Should I admire you or your cooking ? Difficult to decide
How is this dish nutritious?!!
You blanched the spinach and soaked it in ice bath for 5 minutes.....all the water soluble Vit A and Iron in the Spinach went down the drain! All you were left is with some roughage in Spinach.
Bad cooking practices and lack of knowledge of nutritional science is so prevalent!
