After you have the shape in 3 sections from expanding, you can simply select the group > right click > ungroup. This will cut down on your need to cut and past in place (shortcuts: ctrl+x and ctrl+f). Also when you're using the path/pen tool, you can simply hit escape on the keyboard to deselect.
Hi Dansky. Nice, well structured tutorial. But, what annoys me slightly that you are doing a lot of stuff "by eye". Maybe I am too used to CAD software. But is there a way in illustrator to make that line as a strict continuation of the original line at 4:50. And then the second line to be strictly parallel to the first line at 5:00. I tried something similar in illustrator and just simply couldn't find a way. It just amazed me that this kind of simple and obvious functionality (if you come from CAD background) of smart guides is not present in the leading vector illustration software.
Gradients in Illustrator always vexed me, until today that is. Many thanks for the tutorial, I will most definitely be using these techniques in the future!
The best tutorial ever. You're a natural! I'm a beginner in Illustrator and your tutorial suits me beautifully! Thank you very much and already following you.I'm a dentist from Brazil and my hobbies is learning illustrator!
Mind blown on using the pathfinder tool. Gah-- that wouldve saved me a ton of work with my last logo getting the white to go away. Thank you for the amazing tutorials. Ive been learning so much!!
i really don't have a word to thank you for this tutorials i give u like before watching any video becouse you are a really unique in this world thank you god bless you bro
Perhaps CC has updated some of its tools since this video was made. Using the "Unite" Function gave me totally different results despite following the video step by step beforehand. I needed to use the "Exclude" pathfinder tool to achieve the same effect. Perhaps it is worth updating or something seeing as this is among the first videos that are shown when you search "Adobe Illustrator Tutorial". Edit: Several things in this video are outdated
Maybe it's because it's older version of Illustrator (CS5), but Pathfinder/Unite is not working in Stylize/Round Corner Effect. I don't know. Solution: For the black triangle first do Make Compound Shape, then Expand
Very lit tutorial, took a while for me because I was adding a lot of tweaks of mine to it (which did not work out too well for me) but eventually I nailed it.
I also had problem with live paint bucket tool. Make sure that the curves you create using the pen tool are properly attached to the edges by clicking on the anchor points before using the deselect option. After that you will be able to see those shapes seperated in the outline view (ctrl + Y).
how to do you turn on the little dots at anchor points? they're like additional guides or something - for instance look at 6:45, when the black triangle is created - there are little dot/guides at each point. i looked in smart guide preferences but can't seem to figure out how to get those guides. thanks!
Really like your explanations of why we do certain things. I know not everyone has this feature, but I would like to see you explain the cs6 gradient editor bar. I do appreciate that you are showing us the older ways of doing gradients. Simpler is often better. I use CS6 and understand that people want to use older versions.
out of curiosity, could you do this by making a pattern out of the colors and turning it into a brush. Creating that shape and then the gradient is pre-applied?
Great tutorial Dansky! Good music (not too loud and not to low - Just perfect). Beside your skills, your voiceover is the best I heard on similar tutorials. Not sure who gave it a thumb down and not sure why. Again, Fantastic Tut! Your videos are very helpfulI just subscribed!
Sure Evan, it's changes it from a 'Live Paint' type of object back to a 'normal' object within Illustrator. There are certain things you can't do to Live Paint objects, so just easier to switch it back once all painting is complete :)
I'm using CS6, When I apply Round corners effect on the outer triangle, after I adjust the inner white triangle, unite it and then minus front.. The round corner effect messes the whole thing up. The new shape I get after Minus Front is rounded from everywhere. What do I do?
First of all: Great tutorial! Seems to be quite easy. Now here's my problem, I've done it all right and Illustrator is working fine with me up to the point where you go ahead and do Cut and Replace in Place after you colored all three pieces. This won't working for me all correctly, I'm able to get one shape seperated from the others, but the rest is sticking together like concrete. I absolutely don't know what I'm missing in your video or what I am doing wrong. Help would be highly appreciated!! I am using Illustrator CC 2017
Hi , I use Adobe Illustrator CS6. The problem is that when I use the rounded corners effect the path doesn't get rounded , stays angle shaped , it's only the filling that becomes rounded. Also when substracting the white shape from the black one I get a disfigured shape which isn't the one we see in the video. Anyone has any suggestions to fix the problem ???
In making the curves at the corners, I change the fill to 'None/' for those curve shapes', but then when I Unite the odd shape in the bottom corner, and the inner triangle, then select all shapes and do 'Minus Front', those curve shapes become transparent as well as the inner triangle and odd shape. How to get around that?
After minus front my pen curves at the two edges became semi circles instead of just a curved line, if anyone else has this problem you can fix it with the shape builder.
i seem to not be able to make the curves and the triangle to separate into the three pieces to color individually.... cant seem to color the borders as well... i checked and made borders but still no show... frustrating as hell x')
Hi Dansky, great tutorial, thank you. I just need your help for one thing. When I subtract the white shape to the black one (with the pathfinder tool), all the inside corners of the black triangle become rounded (like the outside ones). I guess I have to select or unselect something in the settings/options, but I don't know what. How can I fix that ?
In 2:49 Dansky is using Unite, a step previous to Minus Front. From Reddit: "You need to "expand appearance" on the rounded corner object before Minus Front'ing it. "Expand Appearance" removes the "round corners" as an applied effect so it then won't apply the round corners to further cuts into that shape. Edit: select rounded corner object > click Object > Expand Appearance"
Hi, i use illustrator cs6 and when I try to do what u did @ 6:31 it says "The filter produced no result. please select two intersecting paths." what am i doing wrong help please!! thank you.
I've got an error on the step using Live Paint Bucket "The selection contains objects that can not be converted. Live Paint groups can only contain paths and compound paths. Clipping paths are not allowed"
@@ForeverDansky wow thanks for the answer:) If I select the black triangle only there's no active Expand option. With the selection all the objects - the same. But when I select only the pentool made lines the option appears, I expand the strokes and lines, after that I tried live paint again and there's still this error.
Hi Thank you so much for this tutorial! love all your videos. Just wanted to ask, I designed this logo with gradient, when I send file to client, I DO NOT want anyone else to edit the direction of the gradient. How do I lock that please?
Finally, a teacher that speaks with passion, the right tone, and speed over the steps by step instructions. Thank you so much.

very helpful :)
ty :D
If you're having an issue with the minus front part, try holding alt when you click on the minus front button in the pathfinder tools.
man..I spent like an hour trying to figure this one out ...that did the trick...thanks!
mee too! (but in this case 3 hours

I know this isn't related at all but you have a very soothing voice.
Thanks Tom - still very much appreciated :)

@@AidarAmrekulov I think you could copy the lines of the shape and adjust them.
Yeah, one of the reasons why I fully watch his videos :)
the way you make this amazing logo is vary easy. thank you sir

Awesome Jack, that's great to hear! 😀

Yes.. but with some tweaking with new tools , we can achieve the same results.. Dansky is a good instructor.
You are great Dansky! 👍
On the bit when you seperated the shape, is it not faster to just Ctrl+Shift+G to ungroup everything? instead of cutting and pasting each one?
G 👌🏽
Doesn't work that way..i have tried..ungroups other things
Best teacher I’ve ever had!!!
Maybe it's because it's older version of Illustrator (CS5), but Pathfinder/Unite is not working in Stylize/Round Corner Effect. I don't know.
Solution: For the black triangle first do Make Compound Shape, then Expand
You're a genius. Thanks!
Mike Stankovich Why do we have to "expand"? What is it for exactly??
It reverts the compound path back into a singular vector path.
you saved my life
How do you make it into a compound shape? Thanks
This video really helped me. Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
Thank you Dansky !
You’re welcome!
Hi, very nice video. But I don't have a right panel which includes pathfinder etc.. How can I put it into my software?
Go up to the 'Window' menu and you'll see 'Pathfinder' on the list :)
Very lit tutorial, took a while for me because I was adding a lot of tweaks of mine to it (which did not work out too well for me) but eventually I nailed it.

for me i am getting stuck while i make the object in pathfinder minus front
Me too! The third time I started over from the beginning now, and every time I go to remove front in pathfinder, it goes wrong....

For everyone still having this problem: do Object - Expand apperance on object with rounded corners

Nice toturial for beginer like me. Thank you
How come when I choose a swatch it is giving the same color on all of the sides? Should the lines be going over a little bit?

i know it is after 3 years but you have to go
window > pathfinder penel
and then you have it!
