I agree with you about the environments. They seem very empty. Hollow. Big, impressive set piece, with nothing in it that you run past in a few seconds. As a proof of concept, it's got some good stuff in it. Some of the monsters feel genuinely unsettling and scary. But it just feels like the sections are disconnected, and there's no overall story. I'm giving it a 5/10. Visually appealing, with unsettling monsters and set pieces. Empty hallways full of nothing. Slightly janky mechanics. A good start. Now, give it a more fleshed out story, and cut or fill those empty rooms, and you'll really have something here.
I agree. It's got a lot of potential. I don't even think these big set pieces necessarily need to contain more interactivity if, that is, they contain all this visual richness as a means of telling the story, providing context clues, etc in a nonverbal manner. I think purely visual storytelling is great when it's done well, but as extensive as they are, these settings don't appear to be telling any cohesive story at least as far as I can tell. They just look like neat little vignettes that don't really seem related in any discernable way. It's almost like this "game" is more of a portfolio to showcase an individual developers visual storytelling acuity/ability to craft interesting environments, and then they sort of tried to cram in a super basic "storyline" as an afterthought or something.
@@So_Toasty Totally agree. They don't need to put puzzles in those empty spaces; they could put story elements, and passively show us the story as we run through.
So mini Mulder and mini Scully crash in a strange city, mini Mulder is taken, and mini Scully saves him, but its a fake mini Mulder, the real one is trapped, and the Sorceror is the fake mini Mulder. The end. Ok, a visually pleasant game, with zero storyline, or backstory, no puzzles and totally unconnected environments which you run through. man,...even Chris was struggling to keep some kind of pace and interest going in this game. Well done Chris for keeping the commentary going for over an hour of disconnected scenes. x
Yes, Chris' commentary really carried this game. If I was playing it myself, I would have dropped it 20 minutes in, but he manages to make a dull experience entertaining
It's not a bad game; there was a lot of good effort into it. The biggest issue is, of course, the pacing. It feels like the game doesn't give each section and its enemies enough time to build up their tension and give you time to look at the environments and the enemies' actions to make you start connecting the dots on the story the world is showing you.
Yeah, feels like long demo. I say the "story telling" elements were cut too short. Like the nurses for example; they just dropped without introduction or hints about their existence.
CJU: "These portals to the Hell dimension are in violation of OSHA regulations, your eldritch runes aren't following the ISO standards for line thickness, and you don't have the proper number of handicap parking spaces. I'm going to report this place immediately!"
Little Nightmares lite. Satisfyingly creepy environments, but too little going on in them. No discernible plot. An incongruent Pinocchio-like design for the protagonist. And, why was she designated a "government agent" when, in her headlong rush to escape , she had no time to investigate _anything?_ Unsatisfying, unilluminating ending. Lots of amusing deaths, though. 😅 I agree with CJU, this needs more time in the oven.
@@shadowjudge921 Yeah. It was scheduled for late 2024, but now the release date's been pushed into 2025. I haven't seen any specific date. Looking forward to it, though. 👍
@@r3dr4te963 Yes, the two games have different developers. I called this game "Little Nightmares lite" to indicate that it was very similar to LN, but less well-developed. 😊
This game kind of reminded me of Inside with fancier graphics and fewer puzzles. Getting chased by one of the creatures from Scorn for a minute was a brief thrill but mostly it was just Silent Hill for children: Hospital, abattoir, sewer, all pretty bog standard horror game settings. As always your commentary makes even the mundane games exciting.
I love that the controls are graffitied on the wall. That’s really cool and something I haven’t seen before. I’ve seen signs and stuff hanging but never actual street graffiti
I want to give them some credit, I think most of the individual pieces of this game are pretty good. The textures, the animations, the models, take any of those individually, and I'd say it looks pretty good. But they don't fit together at all. The protagonist has a tiny chibi look suitable for a lost child, but they're supposed to be a government agent? There's the hospital, then the clown dimension, then the butcher's place, then the underground demon-summoning rooms? And then the 'reveal' at the end, that actually the cult leader is...just a guy? Could theoretically be interesting, but falls apart because we have no idea who it's supposed to be, either before or after, and if the idea is suppose to be 'scary monster is/was actually human the whole time' that's undercut by the fact that with the art style it's very hard to get a sense of normal for that to have any significance. It seems like something where a person or bunch of people had cool ideas, and to their credit I think there was a lot of genuine good stuff there, but rather than really plan something out to give it a unified direction it just got all mashed together with the thinnest excuse plot to give the vaguest sense of something cohesive.
Just asking, but why haven't you finished the 'Edge of Sanity' game as a series? It looks so fun, and your commentaries spice things up even more! Many of your viewers would appreciate it.... Hint, hint, nudge, nudge...
Atmosphere and some of the music at the end was really good, artwork was pretty nice and unique. I like how there were regular humans, normal sized kids and then like big dolls/puppets, then ones your character's size. Overall it was a walking sim and felt like it was missing any real meat to the game with a story a bit too vague. I was kinda wondering if you played it through multiple times that it would change and add more with each run. Pretty averaging game nothing too bad but not much to it, if this is a solo or small dev team's like first batch of games or game then I rescind most of that. I've tried to self teach myself making games and its really hard. I can see they were going with a more open end story concept, that's told through the environment, but didn't quite hone it in yet. They have alot of potential and the game inspirations are fun. Hopefully they keep going, there is some talent there, I wish I had that. Out of 10 Id give it; Art/7, Sound/6, Gameplay/4, Story/5, Atmosphere/8 with a solid General rating of like 5-6/10. Hope to see more outta these devs.

It was a pretty good game. Great environments and awesome creatures, but it seems more of a sightseeing game. Not enough going on. Just a lot of running around most of the time. 🙂👍
Cannot get over the proportions, it’s giving Boss Baby 3: FBI, lmao. The game is beautiful but just feels like the environments are the whole game, as if the developer is trying to sell his backgrounds for someone else to build a game around and this is the demo reel. Im really missing a story through-line and character development but maybe that’s what games like this are like? Im not familiar with Little Nightmares, might have to watch your play-throughs to educate myself after this 🤔😂
Great visuals, but I didn't feel like there was much to the plot and pacing had issues. Some moments were a bit tense with enemies but overall, it's kind of a disappointment. I hope the devs will take the feedback seriously and make some changes, it could really be a great game.
Well, attempts have certainly been made in the past to mimic games like Inside and Little Nightmares; yet, they have all failed in some way to reach the same heights. This game has some good stuff in it but once again only seems to get the basics right. Small protagonist, giant enemies that look rather strange, etc. Jank aside, the environments obviously carry the themes of hunger and whatnot from the first Little Nightmares. However, the context and visual storytelling do not go far enough or are just not there at all to create a proper sense of immersion and cohesion. Whereas you feel as if you are a part of a world which follows rules and thus comes across as real/believable in the aforementioned games, this one consists of little more than random nightmares thrown together. Nothing wrong with that, naturally. A short-lived thrill ride of sorts - but that is it. If your game is not meant to leave behind a lasting impression, not meant to kickstart a whole universe, then whatever. Still, at least some more environmental detail would have contributed so much to the overall experience. Instead, everything just exists for the sake of it. Random monsters with two heads and a mouth where their bellies should be - why? No reason, just because. Honestly though, one cannot be too harsh here. One can imagine that Little Nightmares also started out this way and just had the financial means and people to grow bigger. This has potential and is decent enough as a foundation to build upon.
The game is alright. It misses the clues and story telling. Though it is inspired by Little Nightmare, I think it could go in the opposite direction, that the main char is actually normal of their world, just that the Lich/Mage conjured what essentially is cosmic horror into their world. We think the main char looks out of place with what we consider "normal" size, but it's actually just huge like if we see Cthulu manifests. The little twist at the end seems interesting enough.
This feels like somebody from Korea saw that Little Nightmares and its clones were successful and decided to capitalize on it, but understood nothing significant about WHY those games were successful.
Yeah this game feels like it has an identity crisis, not to say there weren't some good moments but the pacing was way too fast and the style was inconsistent. I won’t like it had some creepy moments but the whole thing felt like a work in progress that wasn’t finished yet, I’d almost call it an ai generated game except most of it was fairly consistent, maybe too consistent, it reused things a lot and simplified the gameplay, like a phone game version of little nightmares with less exploration and more linear running away to get from A to B, still it killed some time and was funny to watch XD
This game looks awesome. 👍🏼 Needs more actual danger. Too much of nothing coming for you. The character you're playing looks like some child's doll/toy.
What is the story? What exactly were the floating white balls? The monsters were good, but good monsters do not make a good game. The level designs were alright, but that also, by itself, does not make a good game. A good playthrough, as always. Thank you, CJUgames.
