I can make a guess as to why they don't just recycle the exhaust steam(13:54). It's likely due to heat, keeping the steam on board to re-use would require cooling for the steam tank in order to get it to condensate fast enough to be of any use , which it's likely not worth the extra weight given how easy it is to get more water.

There’s likely a very simple answer for why the drivetrain in the Warthog sounds like it’s ‘shifting’ when it doesn’t necessarily do that, and that’s likely for the operator’s benefit, and the fact that anything carrying force from point A to point B has to be de-loaded while it selects it’s next ratio, which involves either raising or lowering RPM speed dependent on an up shift or a downshift

14:00 there is ONE potential reason. The voiced description for the warthog in Forza 4 mentions that the engine for the warthog can and has been used as a portable water filtration system (special mention going to the survivors of the crashed UNSC Frigate Daedalus) by UNSC forces in lieu of more efficient devices. Since clean drinking water is crucial to the function of human life (and since I doubt going thirsty or contracting dysentery in space seems like fun), this seems like something that was an intentional design choice.

  • @Jade_The_Peryton
    @Jade_The_Peryton Рік тому +1

I think the reason why they opted for direct dive, is most likely cost, and ease of manufacturing, along with efficiency and complexity, it gives us a simple design, and can be pumped out quickly and cheaply since it was for the Colonial Military Authority (CMA), and being so common with the outer colonies and maybe inner colonies as well, would make sense for it to be built cheaply as is.
Plus with the insurrectionist, and later the covvies, it would make sense to not add needed complexity so they can be continuously pumped out, and with parts being so common they won't need to worry about having to find parts for it. Plus its modular, and you know how the military loves its modularity.

    I have 2 problems.
    1. Infinite gear is probably a word to mean "gearless" transmission. It still conflicts with sounds of gear switching, but makes some sense.
    2. Turning Water into Hydrogen and Oxygen with 100% efficiency and then turning Hydrogen and Oxygen to Water with 100% efficiency? Why doesn't the machine that turns water into H2 and O2 power the Warthog? It would be at 100% the same. And since it needs cooling it isn't 100%, which means that machine would do better than engine.

Point 2: It's worse than that. You couldn't use the electrolyzer that breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen gas for an engine because it's a consumer. It consumes electricity to synthesize the fuel rather than provide torque or electricity. But how much of the engine's power? 100%! Because as described the Warthog is a perpetual motion machine! In offroad vehicles like side by sides and quads it makes complete sense and id highly recommended watching some videos explaining why in a side by side cvt is better than manual or auto. Assuming theyre using the same design as a side by side and using futuristic primary and secondary in transmission housing clutch set up. It makes sense theyre using a cvt.

Recent, Chemical Engineering Graduate. Long time Halo fan.
I have a hypothesis of as to why the exhaust system decides not to re condense the exhaust steam generated from the hydrogen engine. Mainly the trouble of condensing super heated steam, this is an intensely energetic process, or rather requires a cooling medium to remove all the energy from the steam to turn it to liquid.
While this process isn't impossible it does however pose a few caveats that would potentially limit the combat effectiveness.
Mainly the idea that you would require a constant influx of this cooling medium, so much that amount of coolant needed to do so might actually hinder the weight and mobility of the vehicle, and that weight/space needed for said system and coolant tanks could be better utilized for the initial fuel tank, or the coolant used to prevent the engine from overheating. It wouldnt be very smart to sacrifice your engine cooling or size of your fuel tank for fractional recovery of said expended fuel.
More over the vehicle would need to be designed to run without this fuel recycling system in case it was ever damaged, if the coolant began to leak, or the heat exchange cooling system damaged, you might end up recycling hot steam into the engine which best case could lead to the engine stalling, and at worse the engine heating up from the steam beyond the ability of the engine to be cooled and thus overheating and potentially making the internal combustion engine and external combustion applicator. Neither of which is something you want in a military vehicle.

I would assume that they would use their helmets to control where the gun is facing and hand controls for the movement, and then have a bunch of automated systems. It's probably the worst of the human vehicles in Halo, when it comes to realistic functionality. It still looks cool, but probably shouldn't be a main battle tank. The maintenance bit, I have no real idea. I would assume that everyone rated to drive a Scorpion is also a mechanic. That is the only thing I can see, but that would mean that if combat repairs need to be done, the tank would be taken out of commission until the pilot has finished repairs, which would make it vulnerable to enemy fire.

    About the engine:
The hydrogen-injection system isn't a full hydrogen fuel. It's an additive. Basically dumping hydrogen into the mix makes it Boom better. In effect, this allows the engine to pull about double the amount of air per stroke in the fuel air mix, and creates a more efficient burn. The catalyst is used to pull hydrogen out of existing fuels, not in the burn itself. The fun part is that for all of the that-shouldn't-work-that-way futurism of the Warthog, this, like everything else about the warthog? Is already possible, and in some cases, is already being used. Hydrogen Fuel Enhancement is already a thing. As is the IVT(The Nissan Extroid used one), etc.

Hypothesis: the Warthog's systems can't supply the hydrogen needed for active use from water on the fly via cracking H2O, it needs time to build up a reserve of H2 and O2 to function. The reason to have an exhaust system is possibly very simple: the steam released would take a rather large apparatus to condense back into liquid. I'd need to check the numbers on the likely exhaust rate of H2O for such a system, but this might be the case.

Honestly 3 metric tons is not a lot of weight for a truck. I recently had to get rid of a 2007 diesel Chevrolet 2500 (RIP) that weighted about 4.9 metric tons. The height, length, and width of the Warthog makes the weight impressively light. My wife and I also once had an F350 that was slightly larger at roughly 5.6 metric tons in weight. The Warthog is a light weight beast of a machine, I rest my case. Also the tech to build a hydrogen powered ICE has been around for quite some time, and with the advent of turbo chargers, Im sure we could build this engine, given enough time (and government spending). Hydrogen is the future of ground vehicle tech, not electric.

(for reference I am a degree qualified Chemical Engineer)
I would imagine the reason for skipping on an exhaust recapture system is that steam condensing systems are incredibly self-destructive. Due to the massive Energy of Condensation transferred by water as it undergoes the gas>liquid phase transition (the property that makes steam such an amazing energy transportation medium), condenser systems are subject to extreme corrosion and high ambient temperatures. Given the Hog's already immense range and the trivial nature of refuelling, a condenser system that requires regular refit and necessitates significant heat sink or insulation structures around the exhaust was probably deemed to be more limiting to the range and operation of the vehicle than the increased efficiency gained from a recycling exhaust system.
For reference to the incredible destructive power of vapourising/condensing water have a look at "cavitation" and the effect it has on propeller blades.

An infinitely variable transmission is just a fancy sifi name for a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). CVTs consist of two cone shaped pulleys and an elastic chain that continuously change the ratios of the input and output shafts, so there are no gears AT ALL, just a minimum and maximum drive ratios. These transmission have run out of favour in recent days because they made cars "feel" slow because there were no gear shifts. this as accurate in Halo CE all the way through 3, but in Reach Bungie added gear shift noises so apparently they went back to either traditional transmissions, or most likely they programmed the CVT's to have fake "gears" like what a lot of cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX do nowadays.

The warthog being able t produce enough power to accelerate a round to mach 40-41 every second or so.
Is yet another example of writers taking a random ass biger number, and running with it, without thinking trough what such numbers really mean.
    If we assume that:
1, the round is made from wolfram.
2, the round is a cyllinder.
then: it would have a mass of 1 231 grams, or 1,231 kg, accelerated to mach 41, resulting in 121 726 185 joules per shot.
    ( 121,7 megajoules )
( keep in mind that the same equivilant of energy would be pushed back into the gun and vehicle as recoil, most likely tearing the gun off )
In equivilant watts, which luckily is just joules/seconds, so still 121,7 million watts.
The warthog's hydrogen cells are *somehow* meant to produce this much wattage, while driving at full speed.
For comparisson, current fixed naval guns with buildings for their own power, runs at around 64 megajoules, and travels at around 2 000 meters/second, compared to the 14 063 meters/second of the gauss turret.
Given the results and animation seen in reach, it would make much more sense if it was launched at a way lower speed, which would also make the power generation of the warthog, a lot less physics breaking.
So either the warthog would require a way different powerplant with immensely more potential output, or the velocity is incorrect.
