The main purpose of camouflage is not to make the soldier invisible, or nearly invisible with his surroundings, but to break up his shape which makes it harder to hit him. This does not really apply to snipers; who do use it to turn “invisible”. Correct me if I’m wrong with any of this.

Even standard camouflage normal soldiers use is pretty effective at concealing them visually and it is mainly used for this, until you try to spot someone either prone or standing still at 100m or more in some sort of natural cover you wouldn't understand, usually the main thing that gives away someone's position is sound or movement. Same goes for US troops in Afghanistan. I think it was called the ILBVE or something. There was a plate carrier that came with a neck protector, groin protector, two thigh protectors, and two shoulder protectors. Around the spots where the ceramic plates would be slipped in, there was flak protection that wrapped around the body to the to the other plate. Not to forget the plates that would sit on the sides. The thigh protectors and shoulder protectors were rarely issued for sake of mobility, eventually the vests started falling apart due to weight issues and new ones were made without the neck and groin protectors. Now both the army and marine corps use more lightweight plate carriers without all the extra.

I don't know if that's an armor I'd want to actually wear. As is my vest with ceramic plates is 40 lbs and helmet 8 lbs. These Marines are wearing massive blocks of metal all over their body. Unless they're hollow or filled with another ballistic material that armor must be heavy as hell.
You mentioned collars and other supplemental armor in the video too. Our vests today actually come with a front and rear Kevlar collar to protect our necks. As well as a Kevlar flap for the groin and butt and shoulder pauldrons. I've been in 8 years and the very first thing we do is we take all that off and throw it in a bag somewhere. It makes your armor so much hotter and more uncomfortable, we'd rather risk the bullet than heat stroke.

Your opening speech glorifying the UNSC Marines forgot about one very big thing: the Army. Remember, the Marines' job is expeditionary missions and naval support. When it comes to sustained large-scale ground combat, like holding the line against Covenant ground assaults, the Army is the main branch. They're very under appreciated in Halo media, but play an absolutely critical role. Plus, the Army gets to play with a lot more of the big toys than Marines ever do.
Edit: Also, Marines are not particularly elite. Looking at the real life US Marines and Army, the Marines have better PR and a greater portion of their personnel involved in combat tasks, but they are no more "elite" than an Army combat unit.

All I know is our modern day military served 92 to 96 in the corps. We did the same job as the army with a fraction of the personal, and pretty obsolete equipment. Can't speak for the army but we were still issued flack jackets, yes damn near the same of not the same as Vietnam era. Alice packs same as Nam. To say Marines are no more special than the average Army unit might be under stating the Marines a bit don't ya think. The Army is a metric ton larger, gets the new and better gear first, and as often as not is thought of first when people think of the infantry. And before anyone loses there mind, my father was a 101st Army ranger in Nam. The Marines are elite if for no other reason then them having to do the same job as the army with a fraction of the people, and usually older gear. All respect to my Army military brothers but just an old Marines point of view

    • @midgetydeath
      @midgetydeath 3 роки тому +7

Marines in the US military are held to a higher standard of skill than the average Army grunt and require higher marksmanship. Traditionally because they always get outdated equipment and less goods than they should have and so have to make do with less and make every little bit they have count for a lot. On top of that, they are the speartip and don't have the support the army does when they make a beachhead or otherwise penetrate enemy territory in addition to the fact they will almost always be outnumbered in a major engagement. So yeah, they are actually an elite force. Calling them "elite" doesn't mean he's saying they're SEALs or something.

Since the UNSC couldn't make a material to disperse 10,000+ degrees celsius of plasma bolts for the average boots on the ground, it's just near impossible given the limitation of the laws of physics on material sciences & economics. They had to redesign the BDU armour doctrine to combat the Covenant more effectively. This is where the M52B variant 2 comes in (Halo 3 Marine armour). The armour is design to be modulated by simple straps & buckles to quickly swap out damaged plates done by plasma plasma for new ones in the middle of combat. It looks it to be less armoured than it's pre-war counterpart & for good reason. It's to make marines take advantage of being more mobile from getting direct hits from slow moving plasma bolts & minimising the risks of getting badly wounded or killed by the melted armour as it melts & cooks right into the user from a direct hit from a plasma bolt when & if they get hit which the pre-war BDUs had massive problems of. I say that's how most marines got killed by, not by direct plasma shots but melted titanium cooking directly into the user caused by plasma shots. The pre-war armour would had no problem stopping a plasma bolt much as it's later innovation systems in it's tracks due to the low velocity, possibility saving him/her. But that armour would be melting right into em cooking them to death in 20-30 seconds as that marine frantically scrabbles to try & it take off. That is where the M52Bv2 comes in with it's design to be quickly allowed to be taken off & on, minimizing that risk. Also the black undersuit, it's to help somewhat disperse some heat from the armour plate getting cooked into them when struck, giving the marine or another combat personnel extra time to unbuckle or cutting the straps to remove the danger away.

Even though it’s a science-fiction universe. The Spartans and the Marines in this game have always been a source of inspiration. I have always aspired to be brave, fearless, someone who stands for those who can’t stand for themselves. The thing that I always loved the most about the halo universe is there was no space magic, which I absolutely love space magic but in this instance it’s a lot easier to relate to a Marine in the UNSC then it is to relate To Luke Skywalker. What always made them stand out to me was just imagine for a second, being a soldier and fighting against An alien race or races with technology that is an entire tier above yours, in every way, fighting against aliens that are equipped with better ships with better guns that are physically twice or three times or 10 times as powerful as you are. Knowing that you will very likely die in a fight but fighting anyway to protect your people and your culture. It is a bravery and selflessness that is extremely rare outside of the military in our world. I wanted to but because I was a troublemaker in my youth I wasn’t allowed to join the military when I became eligible. One of my greatest regrets because I never got to experience the caliber of people that only exist in the service of others. So Innoway playing as master chief all these years as silly as it sounds gave people like me The slightest taste of the camaraderie you would find in the service. Some thing about a single human being standing up in defiance of the odds and persevering through every single crucible thrown his way not for a single selfish reason outside of needing to complete the mission. Saving humanity, saving a culture and the people that he will likely never experience. While he is known his trials and tribulations well eventually lead to him being an unsung hero. Unbeknownst to the billions upon billions of humans that will survive and have kids of their own who have kids. None of them will know that it was all because of one person. Yes he is physically augmented and trained since a child and in bad ass super soldier armor. But still I’m sure many of us have thought if I would’ve been taken as a child and trained like John and augmented like John if those things were possible, I could’ve been a master chief like figure. It makes him relatable like Batman over Superman. I will be blown away if anybody reads this but In The long winded version I just explain why halo is so important to me. Thanks if you read this. I hope others feel the same way.

32:36 weight, cost and logistics. Have a look at the Future Warrior Program or how the IOTV/Osprey Body Armour was used in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you make someone bulky you increase operator load which decreases overall mission time and individual Manoeuvrability whilst increasing fatigue and the easy by which the enemy can hit you. It’s better to not be hit at all then hit and survive. Further, maintaining all that gear is difficult. That’s more complex and expensive gear that needs maintained which drives up costs and can decrease combat readiness. New private’s need to be taught how to properly maintain all that gear and keep it clean. This takes time and will lead to more things falling into a Disserviceable condition after whatever round of future budget cuts mean there is less money for spare parts (that’s why the USMC dispanded it’s tank divisions cause it’s fleet of Abrams had lots of broken parts and it was becoming too expensive to keep them operational).
Not to mention cost. Modern warfare is extremely expensive, the more money you sink into your individual soldiers the more costly losing a soldier is. Debt loses as meany wars as combat deaths.
    The conclusion of a lot of programs which have tried similar things typically go’s one of three ways;
    1) too bulky and impractical
    2) too expensive
    3) technology is not mature enough
Typically the change can’t be justified for one or all of those reasons. Realistically the biggest changes in the next few years will be to soldier awareness. The better soldiers can understand the battlefield, the more complicated Manoeuvers they can perform and they can make better decisions. Thereby Obfuscatinf the need for better armour. Without some kind of load bearing system this armour would be too big and impractical to justify the cost and the money is better spent on something like the IVAS.

A note about casting. There are variants of the casting process, and they change the costs and speed of getting parts. My work for example gets parts from sand molds mostly. The parts from the sand molds need to be machined or forged to final size. This saves waist and can be quicker but is normally a lower quality part compared to machining the part from a solid block. That is because the sand does not dissipate heat perfectly. Normally do to impurity ,density variables, thickness of the cast in spots, differences very by batch as well. The variables can be removed completely depending on the cast method but they get expensive and I do not have experience with them.
For making the armor they could be starting with cheap sand molds to get the initial shape and then finnish the armor with forging. This way they do not need to be able to cut a large slab of metal to size for each plate and they still have enough material to get the desired grain structure.

From someone who has worn armor regularly in the military, the issue with modern tech is weight, cost, and heat retention. Wearing just a plate carrier usually adds about 25 degrees F. Weight of the plate carrier, both front/back plates, about 30 pounds NOT including gear/ammo/weapon/etc. If talking full combat load and dismounted operations, 90-100 lbs is common. Titanium alloys would lighten the load and potentially allow for more armor to be worn realistically, but the cost is up there.

Titanium is roughly a third the weight of steel, I highly doubt a set of titanium armor like what the Marines wear in the games would be lighter than if it was made from ceramic plates like what we use now, and if it was lighter due to it being made from a titanium alloy, it wouldn’t offer the same protection.

I would've liked to see more international diversity in Halo's Marines.
Edit: I think international diversity is paramount when making a universe of Humans vs. Aliens. Usually diversity is just an excuse to pander to an audience without fleshing characters out, but in universes like Halo I think it's a necessity to depict all of mankind teaming up to slay the filthy Xenos.
How dope would it be to hear an angry Ukrainian marine going URRRAAAAA while magdumping into a Brute's face. I only remember the American, Hispanic and Aussie Marines. I even had a dream last night about Polish Winged Spartan IVs with energy lances and forerunner construct wings.

The out of universe explanation is that Bungie is an American company and only had so much voice talent to rely upon, but your point definitely stands in-universe. Given how countries in the East like China and India have such high populations, you'd expect there to be more Indian/Asian marines in a Marine Corps comprised of all the nations in the world (and the colonies). Not to mention marines from other European nations, like you mentioned.

Looking at the "form" of the armor and why the placement of the armor mimics the same body parts of new age hockey gear. If you go to the hockey gear websites, the new stuff is multi layered, impact zones and energy transfer zones. Shin guards protect the fronts heavy but have thinner wraps to guard on the rear but the front has the main protection for the players and the knee caps. The "pants" have been replaced with more of a girdle type that guards outer thigh, frontal thigh, and impact zones for spine areas. The equipment even has the new d30 padding where it's soft but when hit, it hardens and transfers energy outward. Even the Chest guard mimics the same pattern of the Marine armor and the Buckets (helmets) from the 80's (Jofa) do too.

Casting is far cheaper than machining or forging for large volume products. Machining doesn't have much waste as the chips can be resmelted into new billets Forging also requires final machining after it is forged same with casting.

So I wanted to comment on the topic of spalling with the armor.
Based on what was described by its makeup, I believe it works similarly to current manufactured reactive personnel armor systems.
The titanium shell works as a primary stopping point, but is thin enough to allow the projectile to still pass through, but at an extremely slowed rate, which would deform projectiles, but not shatter them, and the polymer compound core, like the current manufactured armor, is made to harden when force and speed are applied to it, such as when a bullet hits something, which would result in the polymer “catching” the projectile.

This though keeps me awake at night.
Also, UNSC infantry isn't the only department that's lacking. The fact that in the main games (ce-reach), the only ground vehicles used by UNSC are technicals (warthogs), quad bikes (mongoose) and tanks while things like APC's and MRAP's are missing. Just the thought that the combined military force of all human colonies rely so heavily on technicals (and fricking quad bikes) as if they're fighting in the Somali civil war bugs me.

I've always wanted a Halo game focused on the UNSC Marines, as impressive as the elite human units are, the "grunts" are the reason humanity endures and given the variants such as a vacuum suit, there could be just as wide a variety of missions as other Halo games. Not sure how to work around the regeneration problem other than making essentially a much harder version of classic halo but a buddy system which focuses on revives kinda like Republic Commando back in the day could suspend my disbelief enough to really be immersive.

Like I appreciate what 343 was going for with their marine armor but it just looks so generic compared to the OG marine armor. Which has its own unique silhouette you just knew a halo marine by just glancing at them but now they look so busy visually now. But infinite looks promising!

UNSC Personnel Rarity List to see on the field
    Marine - Common
    Marine Corporal - Common
    Marine Sergeant - Uncommon
Army Personnel (Seen in Reach and CE Anniversary) - Same as Marines
ODST's - Rare, Usually spotted in high priority area's as they're Special Operations
Spartans after Gen 2 program - Extremely Rare, Almost never being seen by civilians they're usually off killing armies of covenant troops or completing Suicide Missions
Spartan during Gen 2 and 1 program - Almost never seen by civilians and any soldier, Some Marine battalions and squads have seen Spartan 1's and 2's before but usually only once or twice, not a lot of people know about these Spartans.
Chief - Practically everyone in UNSC has heard of him as he saved Humanity a bunch of times.
Headhunters - By all means the rarest soldier to be encountered (Usually only encountered by somebody who pissed the UNSC off) They're never seen by civilians and regular soldiers alike.
Kind of unnecessary but why not
