Lea Salonga and Bernadette Peters are starring in Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends in London right now! Only through January 6. Everyone says it's absolutely amazing with Lea singing songs that she isn't known for singing.
This is exactly how I would sound if I were in Eponine’s place. First, frustration with my unrequited affection for this man and wanting to yell at a world that has been so cruel to me, then at the end, resignation that those are the breaks for a street rat like me. You are right. This was masterful. Eponine is a strong woman so she shouldn’t be portrayed as a wilting violet. This number should be sung with power, before pulling back. Lea did a magnificent job. Probably the best Eponine ever.
she was good. Didn't hold a candle to Frances Ruffelle the original in both The West End and Broadway. I was lucky enough to see her twice as well as Lea Multiple times in the role of Eponine and Fantine. Unfortunately as is often the case people draw conclusions without actually seeing all the performers live. Watching these clips don't go anywhere near capturing the live performance. I would say technically Lea sings it perfectly. Like many others some have a more operatic and perfect interpretation of Valjean as well such as Alfie but none of them hold a candle to the original cast.
I can’t imagine playing a wretchedly poor teenager madly in love with a young man who is in love with the pretty rich girl and then I die, 8 shows a week. I’d go mental.
Thank you for giving our very own Lea Salonga a good review, we Filipinos are so proud of her she's a Tony Award winner of her role in Miss Saigon. In addition to the Tony, she also won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards, in the field of musical theatre. She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. She's the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II. And for that Walt Disney Company bestowed her with the honor of “Disney Legend”.
Lea was the first to take the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. There were a lot of Filipinos in that production. Anyway, you should listen to her songs there, they’re so beautiful - Sun and Moon, The Last Night of the World, and I’d give my Life to You. Just so you know, Lea was so young at that time.
YOU NEED TO SEE THIS PLAY!!! Then see her in a different role in Les Miz 25th Anniversary at the O2 in London with all the casts!! 2 choirs!!! You will need tissues!!!! It is the best!!!!
The entire 10th Anniversary Les Mis production is a master class of musical theatre. Stars by Philip Quast or Empty Chairs by Michael Ball are excellent but eclipsed by Bring Him Home by Colm Wilkison
This shows is still running to sellout audiences worldwide after 35 yrs on stage.. and numerous concert versions and an epic movie.... And still folks havent seen it.... Mindblowing...
Just the best musical made thus far. This is a hill worth dying on. Neither Hamilton, nor anything else written after 1985, can hold a candle to it. COME AT ME!
Love your reaction to our very own Lea Salonga, a world-class Broadway musical artist. She made all Filipinos all over the world so proud. A gifted and amazing musical performer who was highly recognized and awarded in both England and the United States for her Broadway performances. Looking forward to more of your truly honest reactions
FANTASTIC REACTION! Lea started working professionally in the Philippines at age 7 as a child in THE KING AND I. She had her first lead role (Annie) at age 9. She had her first album out at age 10 (which went gold). She had a musical tv show from ages 12-14. From age 7-17 she did theater, appeared on TV and films, did concerts (including opening for Menudo and Stevie Wonder), and made albums. She was 17 when she auditioned for MISS SAIGON, 18 when she premiered it in London, 19 when she won Olivier, 20 when she opened MISS SAIGON on Broadway and won the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Awards. She was the first Asian to play Eponine in LES MIZ on Broadway in 1993. Lea knew it was a big deal for her to be playing Eponine (non-traditional casting was very rare) and really worked hard to nail the part/songs. Hard work that obviously paid off! This video is from the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert from 1995. Lea would later replace in the Broadway revival of LES MIZ as Fantine in 2007 and be part of the 25th anniversary concert as Fantine in 2010 - one of very few people who were in both anniversary concerts and I think the only one playing a different main role in both. Lea hasn't stopped working in her 40+ years in show business: albums, concerts, TV, film, (she has the distinction of being the only person to originate 2 Disney princesses!) and theater. Her last stage role was Mrs. Lovett in SWEENEY TODD (both in Manila and Singapore) and she has done several seasons as a coach on the various versions of The Voice of the Philippines (adults, teens and kids). There are so many wonderful videos you should watch! Just a few of my faves: Lea rehearsing Still Hurting (the actual performance is great, but the rehearsal with her wearing no makeup is *fantastic*), Lea and Regine Velasquez broadway medley, Lea and Rachelle Ann Go Movie In My Mind MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary (they've sung this duet elsewhere but this performance is the best, in my opinion), Lea and Josh Groban sing The Prayer.
She literally & figuratively put the Philippines on the world map in area of Broadway Musical via Miss Saigon. Lea reaped lots of awards & recognitions with 2 being considered major as Best Actress in Olivier (London) & Tony award (in NY ). Not to mention being the singing Voices of both Jasmin of Aladdin and Mulan.❤️ Lea Salonga is the Only Filipina who has achieved such a tremendous feat or achievement !
I’ll second that. But I will recommend that you react to their performance of “Movie In My Mind” from the 25th anniversary of MISS SAIGON. They’ve sung the song together at their own individual concerts but the performance from the anniversary concert is the best.
Absolutely love Les Mis! Samantha Barks did this beautifully both in the movie and on the west end stage. Lea Salonga will always give me goosebumps 💜 you need to check her out in Miss Saigon (the only live theatre show I've seen) especially when she sings Sun and Moon
I have no words...how is this possible? It's heavenly what she does... ahhh absolutely beautiful, unique, sooo good, sooo professionell... she's not just a perfect singer but also a wonderful actress, she doesn't just sing she really incorporates every word...absolutely gorgeous!!!
Her diction is amazing and so is she. She was one of the judges the Philippines the voice. Try Don't Cry for me Argentina. Reflection and Let it go by Lea. Lara puts some breathing in Adaigo and Broken Vow
Ms.Lea's singing ability is explosive. She's so good at controlling her voice, but strong power at the same time. And, Ms.Lea defines a real singer who can give you the lyrics or can make you believe in every song she's singing. She knows how to transmit her energy to people, and was born to burn the stage. She has always enjoyed her time on stage. A VERY HYPE GIRL also. No doubt, she's an international singer. Ay! No! She's a worldwide singer. And, she is definitely, obviously, precisely, undoubtedly and undeniably PITCH PERFECT! P.S. Anyone can sing, but not anyone can really extract the song, and just throw it in your face.
My eyes started tearing up before she sang a note. The DVD of the whole performance is incredible. Sadly, I had tickets to see Lea in a small local theater (cap 550) that was cancelled due to COVID. Someday...
OMG I LOVE HER SM AND IM SO PROUD OF HER ! ❤️ she is so flawless😭my fav! i became a fan of bts after watching one of her interviews when she mentioned about how much she loves V from BTS.
Thank you so much for reacting to Ms Salonga! I love how much respect you have for the craft and artistry singing and the way you recognize excellence in each artist you cover. I know you aren't a musical theatre junkie, but I hope you have a chance to watch Les Miserable - I think you'll enjoy it! ♥
I appreciate your enthusiasm but Lea Salonga would not be considered a queen of Broadway. She only originated a few roles and only one was actually popular or well known. She is more well known for taking over roles other people originated. Not trying to take anything away from her just putting it in perspective
God I get CHILLS hearing her sing. Just incredible. As far as more musical theatre songs to react to, check out “Mama Will Provide” by Alex Newell and company in the 2017 Broadway revival of Once On This Island, and “Made of Stone” by Michael Arden and company in the 2014/2015 off-Broadway production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (although all of the songs in there are outstanding so really take your pick LOL)
The whole thing is on UA-cam. Will you please please react to the other songs from the musical as well?? I love the way you explain sounds and your voice ❤️
I had the luck to be seated on the second row of a small intimate theatre and hear her sing live! That burned a hole in my pocket but it was worth it. Lea has recently discovered BTS and is a new ARMY 🤗. She is always tweeting about BTS.
I love how you shined a light on the art of using breaths and pauses to add effect and emotion to a song. It makes all the difference between hearing the words and feeling the words. Well done! On a side note, WHAT!!!! You are a hop, skip and a jump and a Bullet Train fare away from London and you have never seen Les Miserable! Sam, Sam, Sam......Wow... all I can say is wow. 🥴One of your students might be the next big star of the West End, so gets some Broadway in ya son.😁
Yes, a great technical performance. AND technique is secondary to the emotion that she is able to convey. We feel something. And that is what music is for. So this mix of great technique AND raw vulnerability of the character is what moves people. To be moved. That is what I look for in music!
What you were saying about her breath is 100%. It’s the acting part of her performance. She isn’t just singing. She made a choice for the delivery that ramps up the emotional impact. She really is a master. Thanks for your reaction. Also reminds me of what Christian James Hand pointed out on his analysis of Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights”. (The Session - July 1, 2019) He played the isolated vocal track. Because they left all Seger’s breathing in the final mix, it adds to the emotional punch of the song.
Yeah, that 3 ilove him. 1st i love him desperately, 2nd i love him but he would never love me back, 3rd i love him, yes, im stupid, but i cant do anything about it! 😪😪😪
what you also have to remember is that this is live, in front of a huge audience and being filmed for release. Its not in a studio where they can re-record something.
You HAVE to watch the version of the 25th anniversary at the o2. She is awesome there. Also, at the end you can also see the original cast sing a few songs 💜
Well, Sam Scott-Thorne if you have not seen Les Miserables stage play then, your alternative is to watch the "Les Miserables (the movie 2012)" which stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway. It's a musical movie...watch it and enjoy the story.

Anyone who doesn't get goosebumps from this performance has no soul.
I've seen this performance more than a dozen times but it still gives me goosebumps each time I see it!
I totally agree 👍

So basicly high-school
Very clear words from lea's song, no need for English captions
