Lea has one of the cleanest sounding vocal tones I've ever heard. She is born to be on that stage! 👏🏻 Thanks for watching guys. Let me know what you'd like to see next! 💜
Hello sir Sammy 👋 , Leah is one of the legends in Philippine Music industry ... Aside from being the original Lead character in Broadway Musical Miss Saigon... And many others, she also sang two DISNEY PRINCESS songs .. REFLECTION (MULAN) and A WHOLE NEW WORLD (ALADIN) ....
Lea Salonga and Ai-Ai De las alas mash up And Regine Velasquez and Ai Ai de las alas Total Eclipse of the Heart. You should check out our comedians duet with the divas 😂
Again, Lea Salonga is the original singer of "A Whole New World" from Aladdin and "Reflection" from Mulan. She was awarded a Disney Legend Award for her contribution. Love from Thailand. 😍
You're looking at the Broadway legend herself. I've seen every vocal coach react to her singing and they are all in awe and they know her very well. They always say that if people wants to learn how to sing and do the right technicalities in singing, just look at any Lea Salonga performance, that's the definition of proper singing, diction, perfect pitch etc. She's a legend and the country's pride. I just think the younger generation needs to learn more about her. If she's a judge in a singing show, you'll know she won't easily turn around for you (the voice kids) because her standards are that high. Filipino judges in The Voice Philippines are all hard to impress because the standard of singing here is too high. It's a hard industry to be in because of the competitiveness.
The first performance you reviewed "On My Own" for the play Les Miserables happened in London, West End, if i'm not mistaken. She first won her international theatre awards as best actress in the original Miss Saigon play that debuted in London's West End.
I'm gen z but I devoted my life to her because of her perfect enunciation of the words and proper conveying the emotions. Her voice as clear as water. This is MUSIC
Gonna brag a bit here..... I remember seeing her, as a child, when she performed as "Annie" in a small local production in the Philippines. You knew then she was going to be a star someday.............
I think my favorite thing about Lea Salonga's performances is that you don't miss a single mcfreaking word. You are never needing to take a second to ask yourself what she just sang - you KNOW. With other singers, there's always a bit of diction interpretation that happens and they will inevitably sing a phrase where I'm either left wondering or taking a moment to review the context to understand all the words, but with Lea... no, she's perfection and she does it without sacrificing pitch or tone quality and it's glorious. Edited to add: I love that you picked videos from a broad range of years for her, and especially that you started with Les Mis. Her performance of On My Own from Les Mis really helps you understanding her background in musical theater and lets you pick out skills she continued to use later. Les Mis: The diction, the youth in her voice, and that transition from her mixed voice to belt to chest to head voice are all so gloriously on display here. (If you're not familiar with these terms, which I'm kind of assuming you're not just based on what you said in the video but if you are, go ahead and ignore this bit: mixed voice is what you're hearing through the entire first section, it's not too high or low but has some strength to it; belt is when she is singing higher notes but they're very strong and resonant; chest is that deep voice that she moves in to a few times in this piece; and head voice is that soft, higher pitch range.) Learning to smoothly move between these ranges takes time and practice and there are a LOT of singers out that that haven't mastered this as well as Lea has and you can hear them change from one range to another. For her, it's seamless. A Whole New World: I love how her voice sounds like it's barely changed from when she originally recorded for Aladdin here. She's still Jasmine and recognizably so (and it's the same with her Reflection performance). One really phenomenal thing she's doing here as well is she's matching her duet to his. She's following him for breathing queues and note changes and I say this with relative confidence- I don't know for SURE that they're following his lead for the duet BUT his breathing is more frequent than hers in his verse vs her verse and when they sing the final chorus together, since they take breath breaks at the same time, I assume she's breathing more frequently to benefit him and keep the blend. Reflection: Ok, I wanna talk about something REALLY nice here that she does. You mention her vibrato (and you're using that word exactly right- it's when the voice has a slight wobble on those long held notes. Each singer's natural vibrato is unique and comes from solid breath support. In opera singing, the goal is to have that solid breath support the entire time and maximize vibrato in basically every note whereas in musical theater, it's more prized to restrain your vibrato til that end of a long held note) but I also want to point out how well she Borrows Time. When a song is written, there's a fairly strict rhythm and Borrowing Time is when you adjust that rhythm a little between notes so you still stay on beat but you add emphasis to certain important words. Listen to her "Some how I cannot hide" at 15:10. She extends "can" and shortens "not", borrowing time "not" and giving it to "can" to really put emphasis on the full word. In the original versions, "not" is double the length of "can" (and necessarily so because of the moving pitch) but she's reversed it here and still kept the movement, the diction, and the weight of the full word. A lot of singers try to borrow time but end up either slowing down or just getting off beat. Just another skill she's mastered.
Whenever I hear Reflection, i am always in awe how she can hold the high note, with so much power to fill the room and overpower the recording equipment and give the sound engineers panic... and then she gets to the end...and continues as if she's done nothing before. Shiver, goosebumps and tears. Every time.
There are a lot of people who pay more attention to singers that are "flashier" - the ones that can hit crazy high notes or belt super high or do amazing riffs. They're great and can be thrilling to listen to, of course. But for me - I don't think I could listen to that kind of singing non-stop all day long. I can listen to Lea all day long (and have). She doesn't sing the highest notes and she doesn't necessarily sing high notes at a full, balls to the wall belt. I think Lea mixes a lot of her high notes - but they sound very full and gorgeous (to me, at least). This reactor has used descriptors that people have been using for Lea for ages: pristine, crystal clear voice. He mentions her ending notes. Lea's dynamics and breath control throughout songs are fantastic.
YOU DEFINITELY GET IT! EVERYTHING YOU SAID HERE ABOUT HER PERFORMANCES ARE RIGHT. SHE IS LEGENDARY. CONGRATULATIONS FOR DISCOVERING HER. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET ENOUGH!
Lea Salonga was the original female lead for Miss Saigon in West End 1989. She was Kim, Simon Bowman was Chris and Jonathan Peirce was the pimp. Lea was 17yo, a pre-med student at the time. Cameron MacKintosh discovered her and went on to cast her in Broadway Miss Saigon and later she played several roles in Les Miserables. The video shows the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables Concert in New York. Brad and Lea are the original singers of Alladin;s A Whole New World. Lea sang Mulan’s Reflection as well.
You should watch Lea Solonga's audition for Miss Saigon, her first Broadway role when she was just a teenager. You can see the unusual talent from the very beginning.
Happy New Year Sammy! You're quite young and you probably never seen when Lea and Brad performed 'A Whole New World' at the Oscars. Lea is the pride of the Philippines for so many decades now. She holds the distinction of being the first Miss Saigon both at the West End and Broadway. She won the Tony and Lawrence Olivier awards for her performance in that musical. She also is the musical voice of not just one but two iconic Disney princesses, Jasmine and Mulan.
Ms Lea Salonga is an icon. She still has that youthful brightness in her voice. I remember seeing her as a child doing little concerts around the Philippines. Lol showing my age. She's only 4 years older than me😂😂😂😂 IMO she is the standard in her roles in Les Mis & Miss Saigon.
She is the original Kim of Miss Saigon in the West End and Broadway and a Disney Legend who is the singing voice of Mulan and Princess Jasmine. She’s played both Eponine and Fantine in Les Miserables musicals. She’s brought so much pride to the Philippines. Her voice is so beautiful and crystal clear. I’ve had the best time watching her twice in concert here in Sydney since in addition to her phenomenal vocals, her spiels are so funny.
Best Actress in a Musical for Miss Saigon - both West End's Sir Laurence Olivier Awards and Broadway's Tony Awards - and many more awards. She is a brilliant STAR, an ICON, and EPIC in the world of musical theater! Plus she's the original singing voice of both Jasmine in Alladin and Mulan.
She performed "On my Own" at the 10th Anniversary concert of Les Miserablés held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She is the first Asian and non-caucasian to perform the role of both Eponine and Fantine in the acclaimed musical. The D23 Expo was held at Disney in Florida, USA where she was bestowed the title of Disney Legend. She's the only artist to have provided the singing voices of two Disney Princesses - Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan. It would really be great if you can react to her performance of "Don't cry for me Argentina", her duet of "A little fall of rain" with Michael Ball, also at the 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miz in London. "The movie in my mind" duet with Rachel Anne Go at the 10th Anniversary of Miss Saigon at the West End and "I know him so well" at her concert at the Palladium, also in London.
I second the requests for more Lea reactions! The duet with Lea and Rachelle Ann Go you want to watch is “Movie In My Mind” from the 25th anniversary concert. (There wasn’t a MISS SAIGON 10th anniversary concert. Also, Lea and Rachelle Ann have sung that duet together at a couple of other concerts, but the 25th anniversary show is the BEST.)
Thank you again, Sam fior giving time to listen to Leas, she's one of Philippines pride and no one can matched her achievements internationally to this day ❤❤❤
You absolutely can listen to Lea all day! Do what I do - make a UA-cam playlist of Lea performances and kiss play them on shuffle/eepeat! She is beautifully expressive with her face, but she puts so much across just in her voice. (Hence 2x Disney Princess.)
Lea is a huge star, not just in the Philippines, Disney princess Broadway star, you can't underestimate the contribution she has given to the music industry outstanding artist great reaction Sammy 👏 👑
You should look for her performance in The King And I (1992 Hollywood studio cast). She sang "My Lord and Master" and a duet with Peabo Bryson titled "I Have Dreamed." She was quite young then. She also sang another duet with Brad Kane titled "We Could Be In-love", she was still very young then, too.
Iirc she really changed the way on my own was performed. In many previous versions it was a more childlike fancy of a song, she put the emotion into it that makes it my favorite song from the play
Please react to Lea's rendition of "I'd Give My Life for You" from Miss Saigon. This will showcase not just her incredible voice, but her amazing acting ability as well!
*Lea is indisputably the most successful Filipina ever with numerous awards including the Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award & the vocals of 2 Disney princesses*
And her diction is so perfect. She's a Disney princess singing the soundtracks. You should hear her sing and act in Ms Saigon. Her career shoot up more because of that musical play.
Growing up watching her Disney movies, listening to her voice (also Aladdin's), it's just got this effect of pulling on my heartstrings, bringing me back to my blissful years and childhood innocence when everything seems brighter, life seems lighter, and the world seems kinder.
Lea Salonga is an icon. I saw her first in London back in 1991, Miss Saigon, then in Les Miserables in NYC and London. A total of 8 times live. I feel blessed to have witnessed her singing live in my lifetime.
Love this! you should have checked out her audition video as well. Anyway, since you're discovering lea because of the voice, I'm hoping that Coach Bamboo will be next.
Nice Reaction! Thank you. Lea performed in Royal Albert Hall in London in her rendition of "On My Own" , Les Miserables 10th year anniversary Lea is a GOAT. and she is the top of the food chain among other Filipino singers.
She's abosulety amazing. I've had the pleasure of seeing her twice on Broadyway in New York City. She's also the only person thats been 2 different Disney Princessess, Jamsine and Mulan
Lea did those two original themesongs : from Aladdin and MUlan.. Only Filipino to have done not 1 but 2 Disney Movie Themes.. She's truly a Disney Princess...
Thanks for a good review for Ms Lea Salonga - the Philippine pride. She started her career at the age of 7 if not mistaken and she was the original Kim of Miss Saigon. ❤

If I'm not mistaken, she was also considered for Pocahontas
Real life Disney Princess right there ❤
Also Ariel in the little mermaid
I believe its Jodie Benson who is the singing voice of Ariel in the Little Mermaid.

Ms. Leah Salonga...a Filipino pride, our national treasure😊❤
