It does somewhat bother me that Char goes from being a hero in Zeta to (seemingly) randomly being a villain again CC, but I also kinda like it because it makes him interesting in a lot of ways too. I guess the best way I can conceive of it is that it’s a product of his PTSD. Char is still a somewhat sympathetic guy, they could’ve made that more clear in the dialogue though.
My interpretation is this: Char has seen terrible things, him and Amuro are definitely suffering from PTSD. Char figures if Earth is uninhabitable for a few hundred years that people will be forced to live in space, if people are forced to live in space then within a few generations everyone will be Newtypes, if everyone’s a Newtype there will be no more war because everyone will be hyper empathic with each other and wanna work together and explore the galaxy and there will be everlasting peace. So Char wants everlasting peace and an end to all wars, forever. That’s sympathetic and seems noble, but by making such a monumentous decision on his own, taking the fate of humanity into his own hands in such a drastic and violent way he’s negated everyone else’s freedom to choose their own destinies, to the best of their ability. So would the everlasting peace he so wants to attain be forever marred and rendered illegitimate by it’s very origin? Do the ends justify the means? That’s what’s so tragic about it, you understand that this decision is coming from someone who is deeply hurting internally and wants to do the right thing and can’t bare the pain of war and loss any longer. He’s so desperate to break the seemingly endless cycle of suffering and loss that war causes that he’s willing to do whatever it takes, by any means necessary. The personal and political have become married in Char.
At the same time that CC makes me really sad Char reverts back to his villainous ways, I also get it. It’s sad to see him go out like that though. Very dynamic and interesting character though, what an arc he had!!
Actually, come to think of it I’d kinda like a mini-series set between Z Gundam and CC that went more in depth as to why Char ultimately turned back to the dark side. “Char: The Missing Years” lol. Maybe there’s a book of it or something, I dunno. It coulda been explored more and explained better. Cheers.

Char’s character development was completely forgotten in this movie because in the manga “char’s deleted affair” char gets his girlfriend pregnant and haman was nearly raped during the conception of his child. Haman had deep feelings for char, and she snaps and tells char’s girlfriend that he doesn’t have any feelings for her, then some guy shows up and kills her. Or she kills herself. I’m not sure, but it’s one of those two.

Ques should have been basically murdered on the spot because she was stupid enough to get into an MS and think she would be able to fight.

One thing that I feel that alot of fans don't understand regarding Char's move in dropping an asteroid isn't about hatred.
It's the hope for a newtypes to come to be. Yea, sounds convoluted as heck but I wholehearteldy agree that Char was taking on the mantle of his father Zeon Zum Daikun. Char witnessed through multiple wars that humanity will not change.
Hell, look at the real world. With all the kids who were brought up to understand history, history still no matter what still repeats despite the good will of those who learned it. Nazis are back for some dumb ass reason but it's mostly because people never fully understood what or why it came about. It was only explained as to what that movement was about and it became meme-fied.
Char is right in the end, nothing ever changes. Humanity will continue on it's path and it will subjugate others. Char dropping an asteroid was cruel and inhumane. 100% agree with that but you have to understand that Char has been thru what, like minimum 3 wars now. Nothing has changed in the universe. If anything it's continued to get worse. I don't believe that Char is straight up evil in this movie. I've watched it in every generation of my life and as I grow older working for the bourgeoisie or the equivalent for it, nothing ever changes. They see people as nothing more than wallets. They don't give a shit about humanity apart from their profits. And as Char had said the Earth Federation cares only about their lives and not those who live on Earth. Dropping Axis is extremely wrong. BUT in a world where humanity is seen as a secondary to status, then why would it matter?
Char ultimately is the jaded adult. Having seen his parents be killed for political gain; seeing his people (newtypes) be treated as third rate humans, seeing NOTHING change since OYW even if Zeon had lost. Wouldn't you go through the drastic route?
A friend of mine once said that "Amuro is what I aspire to be, Char is what I would become". And I can't agree more than I could now that I've actually become an adult who was told he'd save the world only to be a part of those who use mother nature to turn a profit.
Amuro's way of thinking is correct in a normal world. But we don't live in one. We live in a world close to Char's. Dropping the asteroid is a wake up call. It's meant to spur change. With Amuro preventing that, only the status quo remains. And that - that leads to the end of humanity knowing full well that they care not of their people (As seen in Hathaway's Flash), and instead they care about their own gain.
"Lalah could have been a mother to me" is not a literal translation of his words.
Char never grew up with "love". Neither did Amuro but Amuro learned "love" through his companions in the OYW as shown in the last few minutes of the series where he thought about his crew as he tried to escape A Baoa Qu. What Char meant was that Lalah was someone who "could" show him what love is. In the same way that his mother (of whom was still alive when he was a kid) could give him "love". Char wasn't saying that Lalah was going to be a literal mother. This isn't a Marvel movie. It's not a 1:1. This is a show made in the early 80s-90s there is subtlety in dialogue. You have to use critical thinking skills. It's not a literal meaning. It means that Char never learned to love since and hints that he learned humanity without the heart (profits, gains, self survival) things that we would learn if we were dropped into a forest on our own as a baby. Where as Amuro understood the love of humanity. Char didn't have that. He only saw humanity as what it was through his experience - full of self realization, greed, and hate. Things that are true about this world when you step out of your own community.
Humanity does not learn through words. Humanity can only truly learn through pain and suffering.
And Char was strong enough to show that pain is needed for change. But Amuro was too delusional to see that his own actions would continue the suffering, not fix it.
And although Char may not have understood what love is, I don't believe that Amuro understands it as well as he is willing to let humanity continue to shun newtypes and to continually start wars for faction's sake. Amuro is the hope of humanity we should become. Char is the inevitable truth of this world that must come to pass.
Axis should have dropped into Earth. But not to kill those who lived in it, but as a message that the world is not delegated to Earth itself. There are those who live outside it's sphere of influence and ultimately that is what Char wanted but never got because Amuro was too lost in his own self-righteousness that he could not see the harm that the EF has been and will continue to do in the next millenia.

LOL, char also said he would give up his fleet and work to enforce federation rules in space in exchange for the astroid, in essence the cocky politicians fluffed it up again, and thought that Char didn’t have the balls to trick the federation with a entire inflatable fleet, just like how hitler‘s generals in Paris getting drunk got tricked by a inflatable dummy army the British set up and all the armored tank divisions were sent to a part of France where they thought D day was gonna happen... But of course Eisenhower and Char had the Balls to trick their enemies and Char would have won like Eisenhower did if it weren’t for Amuro pulling a Newtype bullshit 360 UNO Reverse card on Char with the Nu Gundam and the fact that Char was cocky and gave Amuro the Psycho frame didn’t help and was the sole reason why Char lost.
Oh yeah, and the fact that the federation didn’t even believe that Char was already sending a astroid down to earth until Amuro‘s Pcycho frame told then to help Amuro and the huge amount of minovsky particles confirmed there was a huge battle going on...
