Don't buy the 24mm 1.4 GM, after I bought the 20mm 1.8 G I never used it again, and sold after no use for 6 months. I agree with switching to the 50 1.2 from the 55, I'm doing that also. The 24mm is great, but the 20 is better.

Dan, I am going for the Sigma 14-24 DG DN wide, should I go with the all Sigma and get the 24-70 DG DN or the new Tamron 28-75 G2, I do mostly live music concert photography.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 роки тому +2

@@attilahardy3448 So I definitely love the Sigma 14-24 but depending on what you shoot, the 24-70 is extremely large and heavy and has a few autofocus issues occasionally which are more noticeable on a 24-70. But optical quality I'd say is better on the Sigma than the Tamron so it just depends. Given Music Concert Photography I feel like maybe the Sigma would be better but tough call on what's most important

@@learningcameras how fast and well the auto focus works with an A1 and the low light ability is what is I am trying to decide. I currently use the the Tamron G1 28-75, I am not sure if I should just wait for the new Sony MKII GM 24-70, upgrade to the G2, or go with the Sigma DG DN. I am going for the Sigma 14-24 since it is less than half the price of the Sony 12-24 and need those funds to upgrade from my A9 to an A1. I don't mind having one Sigma and one Tamron but haven't seen a comparison between the new Tamron G2 28-75 and the Sigma 24-70.

Great synopsis of so many lens options. I really appreciated hearing your real world experience. One lens I would add is an all round travel lens, the Tamron 28-200mm. When I only want one lens in my bag, that stays on my camera for a whole trip, this is it. F2.8 at the wide end gets me in into darker interiors in the UK. The f5.6 at the long end gets me outdoor closeups.

Agree 100% on the 35mm being my fave focal length on Sony full frame 35mm mirrorless. 20mm is also awesome! Give the 24mm prime a try, you'll love it. I personally love that everyone else loves 50mm as it's not a focal length I like lol (only lens I've sold when keeping the rest).

    1. Sony PZ 16-35 F4 (Vlogging)

    3. Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 (Photography/B Roll)

Thanks Dan, love your content. I sold my current Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM and got the sharper overall ,faster focusing, lighter and smaller Sigma Art 24-70mm f2,8 DG DN and love its image quality and performance more. Many lenses in that range surpass the Sony, that is one of the reasons a version II Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM is on its way from Sony. FYI, I have owned A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and now own A7RIV, A7SIII, A1. I have currently 13 E-mount lenses from 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma, and Tamron. I kept one of my Canon lenses, the 17mm f4, Tilt-Shift lens which I use with the MC-11 adapter. Cheers

Great knowledge here man. I agree with you on the GM 50mm 1.2, that's my next purchase for Sony. The sleeper lens in Sony's line up is definitely the GM 100mm STF. This lens is my go to for outdoor portrait use. It is crazy sharp wide open and doesn't need ND on really bright days. Another sleeper lens is the 70-200mm G F4. This zoom lens is light weight, super sharp, and parfocal...yes, with no focus breathing on the A7R4 and A7R2.

I have the pleasure of owning a copy of the 50 1.2…its so much better then all the reviews made it look…yeah, its velvet mixed with michelangelo…its straight magic. Its biggest weakness is, that it looks so unbelievably amazing wide open, that i tend to shoot it open all the time, but in some pictures theres not enough in focus left…with great power … :)

I snapped up the 50 1.2 at preorder and the 70-200ii just showed up a few days ago. I had been waiting on new releases in these focal lengths and am anticipating a new 24-70. The 50 is certainly delicious and katana sharp wide open. You don’t have to always have it wide open to appreciate how special it is… it’s an instant classic that I think will age very well. The 70-200 just showed up so I haven’t even had a chance to test it properly, but it is also very impressive. I love that Sony has hit their stride with their system and continues to update previous GM models… an 85 1.2 would really push the system into overdrive 😁

I've got both the 20G & 24GM , ended up just keeping the 24GM . These two are pretty different lenses . 20G. is more towards the scenery than the object. Its easier to use 24GM to highlight the object. But for vlogging 24GM is a little bit too tight. But the distortion on 24GM it looks more linear(or natural) than 20G . So if I want to shoot portrait I go for 24GM. If I want wide angle I'll go for like Tanron 1728 or 14GM

I love these gear-y videos! I would add the 90mm macro, the 135mm 1.8, and either of the 16-35mm lenses. I need the 35mm 1.8 and also the 200-600. Those will be my next two lenses. To me one of the main reasons for switching to Sony from Canon was the smaller system, including lenses. So I have the 55mm 1.8 (and love it) and the 70-200 f/4, and I try and avoid the heavier Gmasters like the 50mm 1.2, the 85mm 1.4, the 35mm 1.4, etc

The 2 lenses that I use the most are the 200-600mm G and the Sigma 14-24mm. Just picked up a 24-70mm GM cheap. Comparing it to the Sigma at 24mm and they are very close. Also have the Zeiss 55 f/1.8. Compared it to the GM zoom and the 55 is slightly sharper. But 50-55 is not something I use much. The next lens I would like to get...the 100-400mm GM...but maybe I should wait to see if Sony comes out with a version II. I want to see a version with internal focusing. Would also like to see a fisheye lens from Sony. That might encourage me to get an underwater housing for one of my Sony cameras. Underwater photography magnifies everything and a fisheye does wonders for close focus/wide angle shots.

In love with the 35-150, could pretty much replace my whole kit when travelling or doing outdoor events. However, I do find the field of view to be a bit too narrow for indoor events, as some have pointed out its actual field of view is closer to a 40mm than 35mm, so I'm really looking forward to seeing Sony's 24-70GM2.
I'm quite interested on how you'd fit the 70-200GM2 and 35-150 into your kit, do you exclusively just bring one or the another, or use the 70-200 with a teleconverter?

35mm is redundant on a hi-res body like the A1 or A7riv--the 24mm can instantly be switched to crop factor and then you have a 35mm with 26 megapixels. And a 35mm is not worth very much indoors in houses or other spaces tighter than a church or wedding reception hall. 20mm has too much distortion to be of much use photographing people or anything else that that requires accurate reproduction. A 24mm and 50mm combo makes the most sense to me for what I mostly shoot (people). The 50mm also takes the place of the 85mm on a hi-res body. And I agree we are NOT spoiled for good 50mm choices--they all have flaws (the 50mm 1.2 being too big/heavy/pricey, the others all having optical issues). We really need a 50mm 1.4 GM that is the same size (and price) as the 35mm.

Not unless you need the Bokeh. Once you crop in on the 24mm it’s no longer F1.4 Bokeh wise

Hardly ever use wide angle but like the 16-35, otherwise 135, new 70-200, 100-400 and 200-600. Everyone loves the 90mm but I find it really hard to focus. Hoping we’ll get an affordable 300mm 2.8 that’s also compact and light. The 400 is great but too heavy for me. There seem to be a ton of lenses 50, 35, 24, 20 to choose from but little at the other end of the focal range

I am just about to upgrade to full frame (preordered the a7iv). Since I am used to shoot with the Sony 16-55 f2.8 a lot I was afraid to miss 24 mm Tamron 28-75. So I bought the Sigma 24 f2 three months ago. I have used it on my a6500 (as a 35) and I like it a lot, the design, build quality and aperture ring.

If I were you I’d indeed switch over to the 50 1.2 and get ride of the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 , the Laowa 50 0.95 (if it’s not sharp in the center at 0.95, what the point?), and the Sigma 65 f2 (bit redundant, optically inferior to the most of your Sony’s, and the aperture wheel has hard stops, so not that useful for video).

Brilliant, just brilliant. A Nikon and Canon pro user for over four decades, then I moved to Sony in Jan. 2017 and have never looked back. I am happy Nikon and Canon now have some good fullframe mirrorless cameras , as real competition keeps them all innovating. That be said, I am not switching away from Sony. I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9 and now own Sony A7RIV, A7SIII, A1. Love the A1, the best camera I have used in my award-winning career as a photojournalist. Associated Press, all Gannett Media, British Media and many pros agree and have chosen Sony exclusively for their staffers, worldwide ,over Nikon and Canon mirrorless . A more complete and proven system with leading edge innovation. Cheers

You ignored the zeiss 50 f1.4 option to the 55 f1.8, you also forgot to mention that the 55 f1.8 has a lot of CA. 50GM is my number 1 prime, next comes 135GM. 3rd place is the Sigma 85 f1.4 DG FN (replaced the fabulous Sony 85 f.8 that also suffers from a lot of CA as all Sony f1.8 do), last in my prime kit comes the 35GM that trounces the previous Zeiss 35mm f1.4 in all aspects.

I think you really make yourself life too easy, if you say "The 55mm does not have any wow to it.". Cause in the end it's a great light and small, good looking lens with great sharpness, fast, native autofocus and a fast aperture. I really can't find anything wrong with it, as you also mentioned... so if there's nothing wrong with it, the wow is that you get an awesome, light, sharp, good looking, good AF, well built 55mm f1.8 lens for 600 €.

So I own it so obviously I don't think it is bad lol. But it's $1000 here which is $300 more than the 35mm F1.8 which I prefer and I would just hope for something a bit better for that price.
