I believe the direct answer in the context of Revelation 20 is this is what many call the rapture. -"They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years". As the scripture directly says, "This is the first resurrection" This is not talking about the resurrection of Jesus but the resurrection of the dead in Christ. The second resurrection is after the 1000-year reign of Christ on earth. This will be the resurrection of the damned. This is also found in John 5:28 and Daniel 12:12 Also see Thessalonians 4:14-4:16 "...we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep....And the dead in Christ will rise first. The scriptures clearly state there are only 2 resurrections for mankind.

In Rev 20, the first resurrection is for those who have died in Christ. so, we're talking about the people who have died (in Christ) from the time of Christ up until the time when the general resurrection happens. paul argued that since God raised up Jesus, then God will also raise up those who die in Christ. this is paul's "blessed hope" - to be resurrected from the dead and it is what got him in hot water w/the Sadducees, who didn't believe in a general resurrection. each civilization has one resurrection. we're the first civilization of mortal mankind, so the first resurrection is for our civilization in this world. the 2nd resurrection will be for the 2nd civilization of mankind that has already been planted over in the new world - they are a completely new crop. the general resurrection is for the dead in Christ. they get resurrected spiritually, not bodily. those who are alive in Christ when the resurrection happens, will go up and get regenerated into a new immortal body in the twinkling of an eye. if you're dead, you get resurrected. if you're alive, you get regenerated (not resurrected). if you aren't resurrected - your spirit/soul dies and that is the 2nd death. the first death is your body dying. the 2nd death is your spirit/soul dying.

@CTChipmunk - Interesting though that in the Book of Revelation the second death is contrasted with the first resurrection. The second death is condemnation in hell, which is subsequent to death in the present life. The first resurrection is the raising from the dead at the final consummation but a Christian can speak of being born again, a new creation, and raised up and seated at the right hand of God while still in the present life. Maybe that sorts out the second death and the first resurrection.
