There are performances both before and after this where his distorted vocals sound like a force of nature. You just heard Mikael Akerfeldt at his worst, at least in terms of their professional live recordings. Still, glad you liked it. Next time, pick a better show or an album cut. You'll be blown away.
Having a album cut is often compared with picking the cherries of his performances. Also, as vocal coach, you need the posture of the performer, to see, if there is something wrong with the instrument. Sure, sometimes you need to take a guess. (hearing, were the tone sits.) I love the outro on this one. Also the one on deliverance.. I love when they do that to make you listen to the same complex rhythm over and over but it still isn't enough to quite understand it.. It's absolutely genius and I'm not sure anyone has ever done that before.
Hi Beth.....great reaction; Opeth is one of my favorite Metal Bands. I was hoping you might check out the music of Anna Von Hausswolff. I'm amazed no one has reacted to any of her songs yet....I think you would find her very interesting. A few songs I would recommend are: "The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra", "Come Wander With Me" , and "Funeral for my Future Children".
Welp, it's time for wintersun. Sons of winter and stars. You enjoy, the transition from clean to harsh, you'll love the Finnish epics... On an entirely unrelated note, you are the spitting image of a friend of my girlfriend's. Same name too. We've been winding her up about her UA-cam career every time you post a video. Greetings from Surrey 🤘
Love the video!! And I'm so glad you liked it! I'm an enormous Opeth fan because of the tightness of the songs, and the dynamics that their writing can take (especially the latin guitar sections off of Still Life), but I truly can't say that as far as vocals go, Mikael strikes my top 10. His voice is great, and his growls are among the blackest and cleanest growls out there in the entire metal soundscape, but truly other prog bands have far more interesting vocalists that you could review. I think on an earlier video (I wanna say the Devin Townsend one) I mentioned Bent Knee and Leprous, I'm really really excited for a time you choose to see what they can offer. That said, it's awesome that you appreciated the strength of the writing in this song, this album has a ton of that solid complexity you remarked by the end. I urge you to listen if you think you might enjoy more of that. Other people mentioned Damnation as an album you'd like, which I'd also say yeah, it's a nice clean sweet somber album.
Part of the list of things I love about Opeth is how most of their songs are long and progressive to the point that they could have made like 5 separate shorter songs, one moment it's super heavy, the next it's mellow, sometimes like classical music, the fact that although he uses a lot of "growl" vocals, he also shows that he has the ability and talent to sing... umm... "normal"? lol, and finally I'll say how much I look forward every time they put out a live album to hear what funny jokes he's going to make in between songs. This video was great and I learned a couple of things. My #1 thing that I never noticed and learned from this video (other than the "nasal" tip) was the part about "they" and "are". I see it as if he takes those two 1 syllable words and makes them 2 syllables. Anyways, great video!
My favorite song by one of my favorite bands. Was very cool to see you get so in to it. Music is the one thing that binds us all. Thanks for your insight into the vocals!
As a classically trained pianist, later bass player and death metal vocalist, I must say that I appreciated your commentary on this video. I've been a fan of Opeth for years, though have felt disappointed with their latest release, and Mikael has been a major influence on the way I growl. Now that I'm older and not playing death metal anymore, I have been trying to flesh out my clean voice, which, honestly, was always pretty awful. During my current band's last recording session, I ended up singing the songs as an interim while the real signer was away. The sound engineer played it back and I must say, I think I may have been too hard on myself. Anyway, this was a long, drawn out message to simply say great video! As a budding "clean vocalist", I'll definitely be watching more of your vids. I find your commentary delightful! Cheers!
Now you're completely to react to Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (live at Red Rocks amphitheatre). I'm always excited to see your reactions (and I absolutely LOVE the "rawr" in the intro, lol) because you always highlight the positive and the remarkable of what you're listening to. Have you thought of doing something like a FAQ? That might be something you could try out! :) Greetings and admiration from Chile! :3

Okay, I see you reacting to Opeth. Subbed. I adore Åkerfeldt. He is a god, but he is also one of the sweetest people I have ever met. He's so incredibly friendly and pleasant. I love his vocals. His cleans are beautiful to listen to, and his gutturals are so resonant and controlled. He's just an awesome guy. He also shouted me out during an intermission in Sydney 2015 and that was the greatest moment of my life but I didn't get it on film and I kick myself for that to this day
Hey, i'm not really writing comments person, but i have to say that i really enjoy that you enjoying bands like Tool and Opeth, and you "see" that much in their music and vocals. I'm curious tho, why someone who is a voice teacher and have good hearing - using hmm... not good headphones (to be gently), I know that you listening from YT and sound quality isn't best, but still... Anyway, I started my adventure with Opeth with "Ghost of Perdition" - i recommend it I would love to see you reacting to some more MJK songs (Tool, A Perfect Circle), my first thouts is A Perfect Circle - Judith
I am a musician as well as vocalist, and it's cool to see you vibe on really good music. You have a higher understanding of music than most vocal coaches who are reacting but only seem to appreciate the vocals. I just found you today, subbed and will be watching🎤😍
Yay!! That's so cool to see you react to Opeth, and so positively as well. A lot of people can't handle them at all or need to really listen to them a bunch and let the band grow on them! Looking forward to more metal reactions from you!
I enjoyed hearing your review of this. It was refreshing to hear my own opinions about how skilled Mikael Åkerfeldt and Opeth are and how multifaceted and original their songs are echoed by a vocal coach and musician on a first listen. Opeth are certainly not formulaic and unlike most metal bands, they use key and timing changes as well as instrumental and vocal dynamics effectively. Mikael has probably the clearest growls in the industry and a lovely clean vocal voice. Given that he's been growling since the 1990s and is able to transition from clean to growl and back in a live performance 20+ years later, it's clear that he's performing in a healthy manner, as you stated.
I always love watching people discover Opeth for the first time. It's one of those bands that people tend to judge but then get sucked in and fall in love, even if they don't typically enjoy or listen to the genre. Loved your thoughts and comments, great video!
I'd be interested for you to check out Opeth before the long break they took from doing songs with screaming/growling (From around '07 to '14). When they started playing those songs live again a lot of fans said it was different and I wonder if it's because he worked on technique to not blow his voice out all the time.
One of my top favorite songs by Opeth! This is the song I show people when I want their head to explode at the fact that Mike can sing very heavily and sing melodically on the same track! Only thing I would’ve recommended would’ve been to listen to the actual track. Live is amazing, but the actual track is so perfectly composed.
Mikael writes some of my favorite music. The way he can go from heavy to clean so smoothly and effortlessly has always amazed me. He's made some of the heaviest music I've ever heard and some of the lightest, prettiest music on the same album. And they can make a 24 minute long song interesting

Opeth - Harvest (live Royal Albert Hall) for great demo of clean vocal skills.
Amorphis would also be good or even better pick for that.
THIS TIMES 1 MILLION!!!!
I absolutely second that. Wintersun "Starchild" would be the best Song, because Jari uses a lot of his vocal range in it.
I'd pick the summer song from the newest album
Make sure the 'Sons Of Winter And Stars' version is the Live at Sonic Pump Studios version.
I love Opeth.
Please, please, react to Ghost of Perdition or Dirge For November.
Love this video!!!!!!
Anyways, great video!
you should have done porcelain heart or blackwater park by Opeth.
My favorite song by one of my favorite bands. Was very cool to see you get so in to it. Music is the one thing that binds us all. Thanks for your insight into the vocals!
"Its so slick, everything with these guys!" yep. that's Opeth! \m/
I'm sorry, but watching someone else geek out on music I have held so close to my heart for so long is such a great feeling. Thanks for the video!!!
Finally an opeth song. You gotta react more to mike akerfledt beth.
vamsy varun and Steven Wilson!
Yeah, and both of them in Storm Corrosion
Greetings and admiration from Chile! :3
OPETH ARE THE GREATEST BAND EVER! Thank you for appreciating a fantastic artist. ;)
Opeth are great! Love them and their massive range. You seriously should check out a broader spectrum of their discography. Honestly, you wont regret it!
Legit one of my favorite songs by Opeth. I get goosebumps damn near every time.
1:29 "WE'RE NOT IN SWEDEN NOW"
Lmao i love that part
Love the fact that even if you dislike harsh vocals, not sure if you do or not, that you appreciate the talent that goes into it. Subscribed!
This is the standard for reactions, Beth is our gal and she fell in love with Opeth... bless her.
Leprous- The Flood (Live)
...a very interesting singer in my opinion check them out
Yes. This.
I personally would do Slave live but thats me.
Slave is more singing-based but definetly some Leprous would be nice!
Or together with another interesting singer, Contaminate me live at Rockefeller
Einar Solberg is awesome! Slave (live) is phenomenal
Anyway, I started my adventure with Opeth with "Ghost of Perdition" - i recommend it
I would love to see you reacting to some more MJK songs (Tool, A Perfect Circle), my first thouts is A Perfect Circle - Judith
Dont forget about Puscifer! Maynard's third band.
I am a musician as well as vocalist, and it's cool to see you vibe on really good music. You have a higher understanding of music than most vocal coaches who are reacting but only seem to appreciate the vocals. I just found you today, subbed and will be watching🎤😍
Blind Guardian-- Bards song (studio version)
I would genuinely like to hear your reaction to this beautiful song. I think you might enjoy it.
Layne Staley from Alice In Chains!
Love Hate Love - Live at the Moore
@@michaeldoerksen2841 Fuck.Yes.
Nutshell from their unplugged session.
She likes mix of voices. Of course AIC is the best...
I was at this show... it was amazing. This show went on for 3 hours, it was a truly epic experience.
Sees Opeth: This should be a good video.”
Hears Beth’s Accent: “I’m hooked.”
Lol
I love Mike's vocals! Thank you so much for breaking down his technique and signing! Love your channel!
I'm a simple like.. I see Opeth and i person.
Nice, you like Fallout and Opeth, Great combination dude

Damn they sound so clean, grew up listening to opeth but never heard them live? So happy to hear they sounds exactly the same.
My all time favorite band. Definitely a love em or hate em band. I've seen a lot of UA-camrs not be into them. Seems like you might be a new fan.
Best live band around, hands down! They perform like this every single gig. Pure passion for what they do
Check out "ghost of perdition"! It's one of their best songs!🙃
Ghost of Perdition next please
Mikael writes some of my favorite music. The way he can go from heavy to clean so smoothly and effortlessly has always amazed me.
He's made some of the heaviest music I've ever heard and some of the lightest, prettiest music on the same album.
And they can make a 24 minute long song interesting
Would love to see You react to some Gojira! Joe would blow your mind!!
The musical geniuses of Opeth! Love them! A proud Swede! Harvets is one of my favs!
Devin Townsend, either Love or Deadhead from Royal Albert
Or funeral
