I miss those days.....I miss Mickey.....he told a story about falling asleep driving his van back from a race and had the cruise set and when he woke up the cruise was still on tearing thru a corn field......
mickey d does a massive step up in the beginning of crusty dmns of dirt 3 soooooo sick!!! one of my favorite jumps out of all the videos I've seen. dude had balls! must watch all of his clips in crusty! go see
I can remember me and my dad and wee brother used to call in to Frank's motorcycles in Lisburn County Down, every Sunday on the way to my Granny's house for dinner, he had this bike in his shop brand new. I was only 6 or 7 years old at the time and he let my dad lift me and the little brother up onto this awesome machine... I can remember that like yesterday, the smell and everything.. Just a beast 💪💪💪
Hi! Great Video! Micky, you are Motocross Legend my Friend, but at frames 4:28 David suddenly painfully realized he'd have to "carry" the rest of the interview. I don't "remember" much about my 1974 Motocross win at Carlsbad (250 Beginner's Class) except my damn 1st place trophy, and the helpful spectator crowd who alerted me to my jammed kill switch on my '74 Honda CR250 Elsinore when I crashed a turn right in front of them and still hung on to First!
Steve once again did an excellent job. The bikes he does look like they just rolled off of the showroom. I wish Micky would of given more insight. I know that he didn't have success with Team Yamaha but he rode for them 1988-1989 and road for the BYRD Yamaha Team for the 1990 250 World Mx Gp series. So more in dept insight would of be great.
@@dalehicks6112 So true. 😆🤣. Micky was one of my favorite riders coming up. From him on the Husqvarna's to his glory on the powerful team HRC Honda, to team Yamaha, to team BYRD Yamaha, through his ride in 1992 in the 4 Supercross Races he did getting ready for the 1992 250 World Motocross Championship on the Trampas Parker Honda Team.
my brother had a 86 model yz250 he bought new, I raced it with him in our local pony express one time and was shocked by the power it had, it was a hand full to ride, to be honest I didn't like it as much as my RM.
My first 80cc bike was a borrowed one for like a year and it was a 1991 YZ80. I feel this 250cc bike has a softer power-torque curve combination than that 80cc bastard! That bike had some weird kind of _2-stage_ power-torque curve. On the bottom it was a kid's bike, it was kinda hard to stall, it was easy to ride... Then you'd bring the revs up and at one point the sound changed radically and it became a bitch. Wheelspin, powerslides, that little bitch could throw fairly nice chunks of dirt and rocks quite far away. I remember one day my dad went for a ride with the bike and within seconds he was doing wheelies on FIFTH GEAR if using the clutch and on as much as FOURTH GEAR without using the clutch at all. That's not kid-friendly! After that bike I changed to a 2002 KX85 model (bought it in late 2003 so it was kinda cheap) and that bike was a lot more constant, it lacked that actually dangerous spirit of the old YZ80. Of course the bike was better because of the typical improvements through the years (geometry, suspension, brakes, clutch...) but nothing quite like the _higher stage_ of the YZ80, that was so fun!
+Diego Ruiz Yamaha 80s don't use powervalves like the Kawi, that's why you have a light switch powerband. Pretty typical of a two-stroke without modern improvements. I actually like them that way, but I'm also a masochist when it comes to dirtbikes.
Ryan McIntyre Going on the higher range on my YZ80 was for masochistic kids. It was like if the bike went from being a PW50 to a YZ125 in only like 1500rpm, from cruising to racing in the blink of an eye
call yami of japan. ive got an 85'. nobody understands the power of the 84'-86' yamahas website says that the most powerful 2t 250 engines they ever made was those three yrs. mines a lil 500 spanker and man are the ergos nice. it was my first 2fiddy and ill sell my 03 over my 85' anyday. just hard finding parts or she would still be my first steed, i buy parts bikes now for her, a lot of internals are discontinued as you probobly kno
Mrmoparrr yzm500 ohhhh la la. I had a poster of that bike on my wall . dream bike lol. man I wish I could fine one. I rode a yz490 a few times and it was fun.
Honestly this makes me cringe. Of course there's progress. In 1988 virtually nobody had mobile phones.....Any one that hasnt killed the majority of their brain cells and can actually remember riding one of these back in the day will tell you they were awesome. Nice work on the restoration though :-)
I used yo ho to Southwick Nationals and Micky raced there one race Micky threw off his goggles on the back hill and my friend jumped on the track and grab them lol
Did he just say 15 or so years? 6:16 Try 28 years. Talking shit on an awesome bike that's almost 30 years old by comparing it to a new one. Fck these guys. I love my 89 YZ250WRW.
I think he was just talking about bikes in general with the explosion of the 4 stroke (roughly 15 years). I don't think he was comparing modern bikes to 1988. At least I hope not.....
From Service Manual: Front Fork - Spring type k=0.380 / Tube height 3mm (0.12in) / Oil quantity 409 cm (14.3 lmp oz. 13.8 US oz.) level 145 mm- weight fork oil "01" / Compression damping 10 "01" fork oil is Yamaha/Kayaba 01 - 15.6cSt @40C, 3.45 cSt @ 100C which is similar to Motul Shock oil, very light - 16cSt @40C, 3.5 cSt @ 100C
Micky " How have 30 years fried by" He can,t think of anything to say because he remembers shit. Still lucky he was there, i don't think the fat cheese was ever going to fit on it.
Steve puts a lot of time and effort into these rebuilds, it would be nice to see a more in-depth review of these things. Maybe vs. a contemporary bike or maybe just have a more enthusiastic attitude about presenting them. I love the fact that Racer X is doing these "blast from the past" segments but could you stop phoning in the shake down please? And put Steve to work doing this full-time.. PulpMX
I miss those days.....I miss Mickey.....he told a story about falling asleep driving his van back from a race and had the cruise set and when he woke up the cruise was still on tearing thru a corn field......
😂😂😂😂
Micky "I don't know what I remember" haha
I just purchased Dymond's 88 Factory Pro bike! Was a barn find! Have Mickey's authentication on it as well! Can't believe I just watched this wow!
yeah Mickey didn't quite seem like he even remembered he raced!
I think ole Micky is a bit stoned... :)
Steve please keep doing this
One of the nicest looking bikes.
I remember the original Mickey Diamond bikes like it was yesterday, loved them then when I was a kid and love this one now. Good job Steve! :)
Yeah, I had an '87 and an '88. The '88 was like a works bike compared to the '87. I was hoping Yamaha would produce the YZM500.
Awesome to see Mr Dymond ride again!
mickey d does a massive step up in the beginning of crusty dmns of dirt 3 soooooo sick!!! one of my favorite jumps out of all the videos I've seen. dude had balls! must watch all of his clips in crusty! go see
great job on the restore, Steve
I had one of those, 1988 Yamaha YZ250. One of the best bikes ever made... I mostly raced it District 38, SoCal.
What they really wanted to say was.."the bike sucked"
haha
Not really a comparison to today's bikes....
I felt like he was saying nice job but not really to Steve's rebuild. Looks really nice. Good work.
I can remember me and my dad and wee brother used to call in to Frank's motorcycles in Lisburn County Down, every Sunday on the way to my Granny's house for dinner, he had this bike in his shop brand new. Nice to see, I had this bike back in the days, broke my arm on it in a woops section... 😅😂 Loved the bike!
The chain can use some loving
Who could possibly dislike this vid? Amazing job guys! Thumbs up. I was born in 88 so it's a plus (giggles)
I probably raced against that bike in Alaska, I rode a 1988 RM 250 back then. Nice work Steve, Ping, Micky.
Answer Racings best looking clothes were in the late 80s and early 90s. By far!
STEVE'S AT IT AGAIN!!! Awesome.
Geez, i had a 88 YZ125 i wanted to fix up but couldnt find enough parts. That 250 is sweet, sure sounds better than a funky 4 stroke.
This bike was the first big purchase of my life. GOD I miss it...

Cool video, Ping..& great to see both of you guys..👍
You should come do a video on my 82 yz250j it was the first year water cooled and first year power valve.
Love seeing vintage bikes tare it up. Hell....would you remember specifics from 25+ years ago lol. Only thing remembered is Oingo Boingo dude. Ha.
It took some great skill and stamina to ride the old 250's 2 strokers. Sweet bike.
such a burnout how many bongs did he just smoke?
I was thinking the same
+Brad Van Yeah he couldn't remember shit
ha yeah I thought the same, he says "things have come along way in the last 15 or so years" !?!
dude it's been 28 years
For future reference "How many bongs did he just smoke" is not even remotely correct
How many weeds did he just smoke*
guy in red: so how do you think the bike does compared to the newer bikes?
Diamond: uuh....yeah!
As soon as he kicked it off jst put a smile on my face.beautiful
This Dude is a legend Crusty Demons 3 Doing Jumps he nailed it Everytime.
I loved the KX video, and I loved this, too.
As other people have said, could you make a few more like this?

That would have been nice and it sounds like he doesn't remember a damn thing.

So cool. Legend #6!
Yamahas should always be white/red!
Blue
Sweet man! My first race bike!
I had a '91 YZ125 with those radiator shrouds. It was always impossible to find decent graphics and plastics for it!
I love how loosely Steve said "put a couple grand into it" haha either way cool build guy's.
That's rad. Those dudes were fast on those bikes.
Man, that gear is so sick!
Video made me wanna get a old bike
S T A Y x S A V A G E™
this video made me wonder how long these guys have been speaking english, all sounded like english is their second language lol
I got one 1988 yamaha yz
Micky is the man!
Makes me miss my 1989 KX250
I think Matthes and Ping should have an eating contest after every video as a sign off cause that shit was funny af :D
micky dimond was my fav wen i was a kid..
Lmao he was trying so hard not to shit on his old bike hahaha that was funny to watch I think the old 2strokes are gnarly
my brother had a 86 model yz250 he bought new, I raced it with him in our local pony express one time and was shocked by the power it had, it was a hand full to ride, to be honest I didn't like it as much as my RM.
That thing looks fucking Mad, I had a 125 of that era and it ripped.
MORE MORE!!!!! What a awsome video
nice work Steve
Good job lads cracking bike sounds nice to!
I love this series... Can you do a yz426f????!!!!!
I loved That bike!!!
Had an 89 about 15 years ago. Was a ripper for a (then) 14 year old bike.
Should've been a 91 model to go with his gear that the era I remember Mickey Diamond from
Love that bike!
Hey Steve nice "cruck"! Haha
The appeal of a works bike.
what the hell was wrong with that Dymond character
Dont do drugs....
Nothing was wrong with him.
Take a kid 15 years old fresh of 85's let him ride that then a new bike and ask him ( I'm sure he loves it!!)
I raced one! Nice bike!
maybe an older RM for Mark Barnett
Wow is that Matthes wearing shoes?! Where are the open toe shoes bro?

Main jet sounds too lean? & go 2 up on rear sprocket
Mickey rode mod bikes. Pro bikes do not vs standard bikes.
I used yo ho to Southwick Nationals and Micky raced there one race Micky threw off his goggles on the back hill and my friend jumped on the track and grab them lol
Damn good machine.............
the pivot of the swing arm looks weird. :)
Now that you say that- yeah that is rly weird

Hi all, can anyone tell me how much fork oil for each fork leg of the 88 YZ 250. Im 80kg what weight of oil suggested please.
From Service Manual: Front Fork - Spring type k=0.380 / Tube height 3mm (0.12in) / Oil quantity 409 cm (14.3 lmp oz. 13.8 US oz.) level 145 mm- weight fork oil "01" / Compression damping 10
