That's what I was talking about when I said "lead with your hips"! ...with shoulders back your style sings! ...nice work. (BTW, thanks for the credit. Name is pronounced 2-Sure. Nice to meet you)
I'm back in the water on a longboard after about a 30 year absence, save the odd nostalgic paddle. Your videos are friggin awesome, they really help me to understand what we are trying to do and the mistakes we're making. Getting your feedback coupled with the great drone footage is gold to see what I'm doing or not doing. Keep it up 🤙😎
Oh that’s awesome to hear! Glad they’re so helpful. Next step is to get some drone footage of yourself… that’s the ultimate in seeing what you struggle with haha. The drone doesn’t pay any favors
I hear you, Im 62 and no longer looking for big swells, just nice waist-high waves to have fun. But I promise a 1-2 foot day can bring a smile to your face.
I can't believe I just found your channel now! You have videos for all the issues I'm experiencing now (feeling stagnant, realizing I pop up too much forward but doesn't know how to fix it bc I would lose focus, unstable cross-step, rail catch water during cutback) - I will try work on these based on your tips!! Then eventually hopefully there will be a video on how to recognize the moment to walk to the nose haha. I'm always one step away because mentally it's hard for me to stay in the pocket area so I typically set up when it's too late. A lot of it is psychological but it's hard to get over that. Really appreciate and love these videos
Thanks so much!! Yes these are all things that longboarders struggle with.. we're all in the same boat. Great idea on the video 'moment to walk to the nose'... i'll do this as a future video. Yes it feels very weird that we have to set up and cross step in extremely critical sections, but thats how it has to be. Try focusing on staying in the pocket through fading the takeoff possibly. Also, focus on 'rail engagement' through the whole cross stepping process. Every step you take should be focusing on keeping that rail engaged with the face of the wave
Absolutely loved the video, thank you very much. It contained so many things I'm trying to work on, especially the getting the weight back in the pop-up and its super helpful to think about the stage of the wave and the speed we're travelling in order not to come off the back of the board. Finally - loved the whole vibe of the video and chilled presentation - great camera work too.
Jersey plates! Surfed it in the early 00s. Manasquan mainly, with no boots, gloves or hoodie since I hate all that gear. I could only go up the beginning of December then back in March.
Man, this vid is giving me flashbacks-used to surf NJ 20-ish years ago, and on 9/11 I surfed close to the break in this vid. Dawn patrol on clean, pumping, head-high swell from Hurricane Erin. Got too many screamers to count, and was so pumped I literally did a cartwheel on the beach when I got out. Didn’t know NJ could get so good. Then I got in the car to drive back to Mercer County for work, turned on the radio, and the world had turned upside-down while I was in the water. Great vid, tho. Just remember the weight forward pop-up also has its place, especially when you’re scratching to catch the wave early or the offshores are howling. Don’t be afraid to adjust your technique to fit the wave and conditions.
Wow that’s a surf session you’ll never forget! I think I was around 12 years old and I watched the 2nd tower get hit on tv. Wasn’t quite old enough to realize the magnitude of the situation but I remember my parents reaction. Yes, weight forward pop up is also very important. You gotta decide what you’re doing depending on what the wave is doing. I still want to learn the weight forward pop up where you basically pop up right to the nose haha!
Hint: notice on your practice pop-ups your heel is in the air? Try to plant is on the board. To do this you will need to rotate your foot (toes) slightly outward (you will land on the inside of your foot -- the result is your back foot is immediately in complete contact with the board. Way more control as you start your fade (or bottom turn), especially in a late takeoff. -- It's a minor adjustment and muscle memory will make it easy.
Man! The sheer nummbers of surfable relaxing waves at any geven moment! In Holland we have to work with somedays maybe waves, mushey, windy and chaotic. LOVE your vids!
Yes! The farther-back popup is a great tip. Almost every video on how to popup stresses getting your front foot up by your hands, but watching pro longboarders, they usually popup farther back. What I tell myself to do is leave the back foot pretty much where it is. The revelation about having to go faster before popping up is something I'll think about. I want to whip/pull that board around. Thanks, Brian. Stan Getz?
Love these videos. feels like I’ve been progressing the same way and testing the same thing before each video, always working on something new then realizing how everything applies to each other, thanks for reassuring there’s method to madness 🤙🏻
haha thanks! Yea thats basically what I do for every video... just look at whats lacking and try and fix it. And yes, everything is starting to work together now which is awesome!
Great vid! I think hands positioning also helps to make it easier to pop up further back. If you push up from closer to your waist instead of beside your chest, it's easier than to use brute force to get further back. Also notice how joel tudor's thumbs are facing the nose (arms twisted almost 180°) when he's about to pop up. Noticed that in a few loggers as well. As for your backfoot, helps if you keep them planted at the tail, it will slide a bit forward when you pop up but it'll stay behind. When you complete your pop up your backfoot leg could be more bent (like drop knee turn) to set up the first turn. Its fun to watch your progression. Keep it up! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Thanks so much! Well said... Keeping your hands closer to your waist is something I figured out the other day practicing in my living room, really helps. I also see what youre saying in other longboarders how they keep their back foot planted at the tail during the whole pop up. I'll have to check out joel's thumbs.. never noticed that!
Love your videos and just had to laugh a bit because my “problem” always was/is that I am getting up to far in the back of my board. But you are right it is easy to turn and whenever I remember I do that cross step right after the turn. Often I forget but that will be m goal for the next session I think ❤️
put the playback speed at .25 at 5:18 and this wave is absolutely beautiful!! I'm goofy-footed and have been trying to work on this backside takeoff for soo long! but this little clip definitely helped to visualize how to pull in! Beautifully done broha! 🤙🏻
I sometimes push the board out in front of me with my hands mid pop up so my feet land further back, and this seems to help have more control over the bottom turn and setup into trim; you should try it it may be helpful for getting even further back on the board at takeoff.
wowwowwow! Amazing! Thank you sooooo much for this! I'm stuck in china these couple of years, and that's makes learning process so... complicated)) I was not improving, no I see why! Exellent video
Its like when you pop up with your feet back, you use the inertia of your body to throw the board down the face of the wave just a little bit to get it out there and i think that helps you catch the wave sooner
Hey love and appreciate your videos I am 76 and I surf in Florida the wave here closes out much faster. How long is your bored mine is 9 ft where should I position my body while paddling closer to the tail or closer to the nose very helpful you showing your surfing ability thank you my name is John
Awesome John thanks! I ride a 9'6" board. When it comes to paddling, you should paddle as close to the nose as you can without nosediving on the takeoff. This may mean really lifting your chest up when your paddling. Also, some waves I paddle farther back on the board knowing that it's a later takeoff. Some waves I'll be really close to the nose because I know it's going to be a tough wave to catch. Keep tinkering with different positions till it starts to feel natural!
at 5:47 you say if you want to pop up to the back of the board you "almost have to throw your body back". Disclaimer: I've only been surfing about 6 months. One thing I've found myself doing is instead of throwing my body back I flick my board forward with my wrists as I pop up. I'd love to see you try this / hear your thoughts
Yes that's a great Idea! I'm somewhat doing that by putting my hands farther down the board during the pop up latley. However, I"ll have to try and exaggerate this and see what happens.
@Longboard Sessions I think I actually accomplished it by putting my hands closer to the tail. I.e behind my pecs. I haven't really thought about it but there have been times where I'll pop up fast on. A late drop and it helps. If you hands are further back as you push the board away and move to your feet it moved the boards forwards underneath you
I just found your channel. Love the videos. I grew up surfing in Spring Lake. It's great to see the old breaks from the drone. Keep up the good work. Hit me up if you're ever in Australia. If you froth surfing Spring Lake, your head will explode getting to surf Bells and Winki.
Thanks Brian! A trip to australia is on my list haha! Yea my head would explode... it exploded surfing california so I can't wait to take some more trips!
So fun! Well people hate it when I say where I am, so I'll just say central jersey.... but yea the parking is very easy around here... except in summer 😂
See if this doesn’t help you. Try catching waves without paddling. As the swell approaches raise the nose up towards the sky and gently use gravity to dip the tail deep so that the buoyancy force pops you up just at the moment the face of the swell lifts your tail. Use the momentum to pop to your feet. The more perfect the timing the mor effortlessly it is to pop to your feet. It took me a dozen waves or so to master this but wow once you do you can compete with the shot boarders in the shore breaks. Been surfing since i was 1964 still keep on surfing. Im 69 now. Recovery time is a bitch now. Lol!
Oh man i bet the recovery is no fun haha! I know the feeling you're talking about.... sinking the tail and than you shoot forward from the buoyancy. I'll give it a shot!
Thanks! The vlog setup is a sony a6600 with a sigma 16mm 1.4. However, I'm going to get the Tamron 17-70 2.8 soon to make it a bit easier for me. Right now I have to vlog with the 16mm but switch to another lens (cheap sony zoom) for b-roll. Hopefully I can do both at the same time with the tamron hehe
Great stuff! I'm learning so much. You know what I can't find: A guide to longboard length for experienced surfers who are new to longboarding. There seems to be lots of conflicting info. Some say to start with 9'0 or 9'2, then others say it's better to just go ahead and start with 9'6 or over. What's your take? Thanks for sharing your journey!
Thanks Charlie! Hmm that sounds like a great video idea. However, I would need to do my research. From my experience, I would start with the properly sized board for you when it comes to Noseriding. So someone who is 130 lbs could surf a 9.0 - 9.2. If you’re 175 lbs I’d go for a 9.6 - 9-9. The best thing to do is to contact the board company your interested in and they can assist you in size. That’s what I did with both boards I’ve purchased an everyone was very helpful (Bing and COS)
Longboard size is dependent on a couple things. As mr. Longboard sessions said weight is a factor, also depends on what style of longboarding you want to do (performance, noseriding, screaming through mini tubes, etc.) and wave size you plan to surf it on. Definitely talk all of this over with your board builder
Thanks so much! Well it's a COS Chingona 9'6". I'm not sure of all the exact dimensions, but it's a fairly "all around" board. Works great on our steep waves here. You can check out the exact specs on their website I believe
I should add that i shape my boards with a lot of tail rocker really makes a huge difference. Especially here in the north fl zone. Shout out to to OB Dan Diego. My home away from home...
Just wanted to say you do an amazing job with your style of explanations! Incredible job both with your clips and the way you explained everything. I don't even use long boards and I really enjoyed your video. The longest board I surf is a 7' when the waves are too small for my other boards, but I found your video helpful in regards to paddle surfing entries. Great job!
This is great… I actually pop-up with my feet further back… there is at least one thing that I am doing right, even if it was accidental😂🤙… I have been putting some thought into this as well and my thought was it is easier for a person with a longer trunk/torso…
3:40 these aren't really close-outs, I think one pump or two would get you where you need to be. I see lots of longboard teachers claiming people rush to the nose too fast without settling in the pocket first. This is especially the case for people who ride short duration waves like east coast surfers etc.
That seems to be the way to do it... but it's a struggle for me. I think it's because i'm only 5'4. I'll keep tinkering and hopefully make it happen soon
Great surfing. 👍 If you wanna get up further back though, or with a less wide stance, knee paddlin might help also. I suggest waxin your knees, top bottom of feet, and hands prior to goin out, especially if your no leash. ✌️
@@LongboardSessions Came as more a counter to putting on sunscreen, wax the hands and feet so they arent slippery anymore. Works good enough, better than not waxing. Hands and feet eventually get wax from the board anyway, just speeds up the process. 👍
I just got a 9’8” bing continental. You aren’t riding yours in this video but I wanted to ask how it’s holding up? I feel like I’m gonna ding that razor thin tail within a week.
Wow you're gonna love that board! I actually sold it to get the new board, but will likley get another in the future... maybe a little longer than my old one. It held up just fine, but I babied it as much as I could. The tail is so thin! But the only issues I had were pressure dings on the deck and that's normal. Throw it in a bag everytime and you'll be good to go
5:33 that's not a normal popup, you can't push off your toes. normal popup is launching from the knees, which is what you're actually doing in the clips in the water
Yup, you're 100% correct. I'll be making a video on the pop up soon and in my research I found that out haha! I looked at my pop ups in the water and realized you never use your feet
Thanks! haha so true, they had some crazy arms. My goal is to be able to control what they're doing as best as I can. It's more of an excersize to make sure my technique is right. Once I know i'm good on that front, i'll start waving them all over the place haha
Not sure where you are surfing but it looks cold! The water looks like mercury…thick and heavy. Not a breath of wind either. 100% opposite to Western Australia - oh yeah I also forgot to mention the great whites. 😁 But good well explained video.
Helpful video! I'm currently trying to transition to turning immediately on my longboard. I can stand up on the board, but the waves are too steep so I can sent over the falls a lot. I learned a lot from this video though, and can't wait to try it out tomorrow when I go surfing.
Thanks! What state/ country are you surfing? Also, I'll be making a tutorial on turning big boards in the very near future. Maybe 3 to 4 videos from now
@@LongboardSessions I'm in Virginia, so I usually surf Virginia Beach, but I used to surf Assateague Island in Maryland, and sometimes Delaware. Are you in Jersey?
@@NefariaAdventures oh ok great! Yea east coast has some steep , quick waves which makes learning the takeoff a bit harder. Not sure how your pop up is but you gotta make sure your pop up is quick and effortless. I always recommend practicing your pop up Atleast 30 times a day at home just to get the muscle memory. Also, make sure you look where you want to go at all times and never at your board. That could help with the takeoff and turning
Actually, I think a whole lot of it is in your head! - no, not a mental attitude, but positioning, your head is surprisingly heavy, AND it brings your shoulders and then chest into play, weight wise. If you can raise your head during take off, your hips are already closer to "underneath" that centre of gravity point. I see some of your scenes there where your neck is extended forward and therefore moving your centre of gravity is ahead of your hips, almost countering the hips forward effort you make, and it comes a step sooner too. Everything runs smoother and more naturally. Try it and see what you think.
Wow I think you're totally right! I do have a problem of hunching over while cross stepping which is the opposite of what you're supposed to do. Leading with my hips is something I keep trying to do, but it's tough. I'll try thinking of my head instead. Thanks!
What a place to grow up! I used to do that as teenager when I basically lived at my buddies house by the beach. We would jump in a hot shower with our suits on and than head straight to the beach haha
Exercise: Try to Jump on the Ground from a height let's say ...1 Meter (3ft) but then instead of jumping with the Whole Body, first Make Yourself Smaller and jump with the Legs going first and your Upperbody stays at the Same Level. That's how a Pop'up in a takeoff can be done.
@@LongboardSessions It's a bit like a "PopDown" instead like a PopUp. Pushing the legs down, working from UnderBody first, helps a lot on bigger sharper waves. But translating that to chiller longboarding waves makes your popup go more have style.
Dude, LOVE sharing your journey with you! As you review something I'm heading out and working on it over the next few days! Soul surfers - my brother! LOL
Yes thats a definite possibility. But I disagree with the angling into the wave. Yes some waves call for that, but other waves need something different to try and hit the pocket (ie faded takeoff). That being said, I do need to try what you're saying more often. I see so many longboarders take off very angled and almost run to the nose during the pop up. That could be very beneficial on our quick jersey waves!
That's what I was talking about when I said "lead with your hips"! ...with shoulders back your style sings! ...nice work.
(BTW, thanks for the credit. Name is pronounced 2-Sure. Nice to meet you)

Oh man i bet the recovery is no fun haha! I know the feeling you're talking about.... sinking the tail and than you shoot forward from the buoyancy. I'll give it a shot!
Love it - thanks man
Thanks Chris! You got it 🤙
Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻🏄♂️
Thanks James!
What is your vlogging camera? The video is so cool with nice bokeh
@@Psyched-Surf Well said. So many factors come into play when choosing a longboard
Great effort and results you are achieving in your riding. Congrats.
Could you please share some details on your boards.
Thanks if able…
Thanks so much! Well it's a COS Chingona 9'6". I'm not sure of all the exact dimensions, but it's a fairly "all around" board. Works great on our steep waves here. You can check out the exact specs on their website I believe
Cool thxxx!!! Greaaat angles!!!
Thanks Kyle!
I should add that i shape my boards with a lot of tail rocker really makes a huge difference. Especially here in the north fl zone. Shout out to to OB Dan Diego. My home away from home...
My old board had quite a bit of tail rocker.. new one a little less. I'm sure it will still work fine tho
Great job!
Wow thanks so much Kevin! Glad that the longboarding advice can help you with smaller boards as well. Faded takeoff on a 7' sounds quite fun!
This is great… I actually pop-up with my feet further back… there is at least one thing that I am doing right, even if it was accidental😂🤙… I have been putting some thought into this as well and my thought was it is easier for a person with a longer trunk/torso…
Ohhh very interesting. I'm only 5'4" so it makes sense that its more of a struggle for me!
@@LongboardSessions massive struggle for me to get my feet that are 6’3 Way behind my head to land Way up under my chest though😂
@@noseridesnosedivessurfvlog8634 well it’s a good thing you’re a longboarder 😂😂
@@LongboardSessions agreed brother 😂🤙
Thank you😁🤙
Anytime🤙
3:40 these aren't really close-outs, I think one pump or two would get you where you need to be. I see lots of longboard teachers claiming people rush to the nose too fast without settling in the pocket first. This is especially the case for people who ride short duration waves like east coast surfers etc.
For example at 3:40 doing a cross step instead of a pump
Yes you could be right! It is hard to see with video sometimes tho. But yes, getting in the middle of the board helps so much with speed
Thanks Man! Vlad is cool
Yea he's the best!
I think this point on couple month ago.
Need strengthen as you siad !!
It helps alott mann.
Yes totally! Can't believe it took me this long to start working on it haha!
The hunt :) . I leave my back foot planted where it is when I pop up, that way it stays over the fin.
I never thought of waxing myself lol. Does it stay on? Seems like it might just come off too fast
@@LongboardSessions Came as more a counter to putting on sunscreen, wax the hands and feet so they arent slippery anymore. Works good enough, better than not waxing. Hands and feet eventually get wax from the board anyway, just speeds up the process. 👍
Oh true haha!
Throw it in a bag everytime and you'll be good to go
love this.....
Thanks!
Long board Single fin Sundays 😁
5:33 that's not a normal popup, you can't push off your toes. normal popup is launching from the knees, which is what you're actually doing in the clips in the water
Yup, you're 100% correct. I'll be making a video on the pop up soon and in my research I found that out haha! I looked at my pop ups in the water and realized you never use your feet
Been wondering for a while, what is your board bag? Can you leave a link to it! Much appreciated and love your videos
thanks Henry! Its a Dakine mission noserider bag. Had one for my Bing and got a new one for my COS. its an awesome bag!
Practicing Tai Chi is great for upright posture, weight shifting and fluidity for Longboarding.
Oh very interesting!
Good video! BTW, don't worry about your arms, it's fine. Go back and watch the guys surf in "The Endless Summer".
Thanks! haha so true, they had some crazy arms.
But good well explained video.
haha thanks! Yes I imagine it's quite a different experience. I'd love to surf Australia one day
Helpful video!
@@NefariaAdventures yes I’m in Jersey
@@LongboardSessions thanks so much for the advice!
Thanks!
The quality of the light around 6.00 is unreal
For real! Wish I had a photographer out that day haha
Cool
The best way to dry a wetsuit in a day is hang it inside out in a room with a dehumidifier on max.
That's a great idea! I'll have to buy a dehumidifier..... i'll add it to the list haha
This is Nj ?!?? Where????
It's in the central NJ area, but when the waves are good it's like this just about everywhere!
Hey I sanded that board! Looks like the COS is working well for ya :)
oh awesome!! Yes its an awesome board, love it! Really handles the east coast beach break well
I grew up in Newport Beach my wetsuits never dried in the winter it lived in the shower so at 6AM hot 🔥 shower warmed the suit up.
Oh very interesting, I'll have to give that a shot! Wonder if that could help with my foot positioning as well
@@LongboardSessions It's a bit like a "PopDown" instead like a PopUp. Pushing the legs down, working from UnderBody first, helps a lot on bigger sharper waves. But translating that to chiller longboarding waves makes your popup go more have style.
Awesome. Can't wait to try it out! I could use some style haha
@@LongboardSessions I noticed during yr videos you got better and better at it!
What board is that?
COS Chingona 9'6"
Dude, LOVE sharing your journey with you! As you review something I'm heading out and working on it over the next few days! Soul surfers - my brother! LOL
Thanks so much Greg! Glad I'm not alone haha
@@LongboardSessions Let me know if you land on Oahu anytime... would love to show you some of my favorite spots.
or be like me and have a crappy pop up so you end up late on the back of the board naturally! (which is stink for shortboard)
Haha that's one way to do it!
lead everything with your hips
Yes! I gotta start focusing on that a bit more
I but I’m wet suit on my car wind mirror time I get home it’s dry
haha good idea
You're paddling two strokes too long loosing time ~ Take off angling into the wave and just start walking the nose on takeoff ~
Two wetsuits solves putting on wet one even three
Yep, that's the best solution. However, Iv'e been leaving my suit right next to an oil heater over night and that seems to be doing the trick!
