I thought it was an older Green Day song because I recognized that riff, but then I read your description. Now, I realize that the melody the riff uses is very similar to "So What" by Pink (released in 2008).
Yes, she has always liked them, though she’s not a rabid fan. I actually looked into going to see them play live, but the only place they are playing near us is in a baseball stadium and I don’t have any interest in seeing a concert there.
Check out Green Day's song 1981. It has a really cool bass line that I think you'd have fun with. BTW, you always have awesome song choices! I especially love the Attractions covers. Also, maybe I missed your explanation but what's the story behind all the masks?
Hey man, could I ask you to try a song? I can't find it anywhere on the internet and couldn't do it by ear. It's not a rock song. "I Guess It's All Over", from Mazerati. Help me, TJH3113, you are my only hope.
Executed perfectly Troy u get better & better utterly sublime m8. Ps do u like any Red Hot Chili Peppers songs if so could u do a BASS cover of Californiacation? That's a very melodic bass line indeed.
I'm DYING" 🤣🤣🤣 The Nerve Indeed! And your Lynn said this in her Best Insinuating Snarky Green Day Way Too! Fits in well with a Leap Year so why not! Mike Dirnt has always played his Bass like a man possessed! It's funny how I catalog my music but I do have a system that works for me. And under the File titled F-YOU WORLD. at the top of that list is EVERYTHING that is Green Day Musically! I've always enjoyed their Flip The Bird type music. Amazing how a tweak of drilling a few holes literally fixed the sound you wanted in your Bass! Joe is a Doctor! We made it to March and survived Winter once more...YES! Cheers From COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO 👋
Yeah, she really got me good with that one. I asked her how she knew he played with a pick and she said that I told her one time a while back. She was watching a live clip of them and couldn't figure out who was playing bass because she's used to seeing mostly finger-style players. She's pretty good with that stuff and can pick out 5/6 string basses, fretless basses, and even some specific makes. As always, thanks and take care!
Green day always seemed derivative to me. They were just a less good version of The Dead Milkmen, the OG pop punk band. Also before them was The Judys, a local sort of "easy listening" punk. Their song "Guyana Punch" was a thing on college radio back in the early eighties. Had it on a single I hid from my dad. He was terribly upset by Jonestown because he knew the guy who mixed the punch.
I never listened to any punk rock, so I really can’t comment on that. That’s funny, I just saw a meme yesterday. It had four photos - Muhammad Ali, Joe Fraser, Mike Tyson, and Jim Jones. The phrase was, “Whose punch was the deadliest?”
Been subbed for awhile and really admire your cover work. You've been one of my go-to's as you always nail 'em and then some more! With that being said, I've been curious as to how you approach your songs. Do you figure it all out by ear, section it off, and/or find tabs? Your more ambitious takes come off so seamless and I've been trying to work on memorizing covers myself. Cheers!
Cool, thanks! I play entirely by ear and memory. It's how I started and the only way I know. The illusion of "seamless" is created by playing the song over and over until I don't have to think very much about what my hands are going to do. It's just a matter of practice and repetition. I'd say it's 75% muscle memory and 25% brain function by the time I'm ready to record a video. Every song takes more time to get to that point than you might think and some take a really long time.
Great cover as always. In your defense, how you attack the strings and the way your bass is set up makes it sound like you're using a pick. Rings out just like Mike Dirnt.
Thanks Steve. Some of my favorite players when I was starting out were pick guys - Gene Simmons, Dave Hope, John Glascock, Chris Squire... so I think I was always subconsciously trying to get my fingers to sound as much like a pick as I possibly could.
Ooo Green Day! Havent kept up on them since 2009. I like the sound of this! Great job, you nailed his aggressive attack and little flourishes he adds. Very impressive as always! Mike Dirnt has always been a real solid player. Was one of my early influences that showed me bass could be a bit more melodic.
I played a few of their songs in a band back in the early/mid 90s? That’s the last time I really paid any attention to them. It’s cool that they are still making new music though. Thanks a lot!
No picks were harmed in the production of this recording! Nicely done, thanks for sharing.
What you said is true.
Thank you very much!
Well, aren't you gonna play it with a pick? 😂 Love that bass and love that tone! Great cover Troy!
Doubtful. Thank you very much!

Now, you mention it, that riff does sound familiar.
Cool that Lynn likes Green Day. Maybe the two of you can see them on their upcoming tour. Mike sure can play some catchy lines.
Yes, she has always liked them, though she’s not a rabid fan. I actually looked into going to see them play live, but the only place they are playing near us is in a baseball stadium and I don’t have any interest in seeing a concert there.
Haha, relatable about the pick. NEVER. Cool song.
We agree then! I’m glad you liked it.
Excellent as always Troy. Some nice lines on the new album. I'm taken with Suzy Chapstick at the moment.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot… I’ll have to check that one out. Take care!

I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
The masks? I just collect them and other, horror related, items.

Thanks so much. I'm not big into the Chili Peppers, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Excellent playing Troy!!🤘🤘🤘
Thank you!
Oh my.
Just say “I did! …the pick’s on drums!”
😂🤣😂
A song written about my ex brother in law !
Great job Troy !😅
Ha ha… Thanks!
Goomby also would like to add that you are tonally and technically cleaner than anyone else on UA-cam. Goomby has spoken.
Very nice of you to say. I thank you.
Cool tune, greate cover and love the tone. Just hit the bell, so keep em comming. :-)
Thank you! Will do!
Goomby enjoys your sullen dredge for this tune. Perhaps you are from the same type home planet?
Great to hear. Anything is possible.
Excellent love a Green day , that bass has a very hot pick up 😊
Thank you very much! Yes, the p/u is out of an old Guild bass. It's a single coil and it was made by Dimarzio.
Good to see your still uploading videos. I need to get back on that horse. Hell of a bass there.
You should! Thank you.
Nice cover Troy. As always ;-)
Thanks again!
Mike Dirnt was the punk sound in Green Day, he just played it better than the Punk sound should have been played...
what? LOL
Dang Ai comments always confused and laughing at folks.
Yes, I think he took the rawness of punk and put some polish on it.
😂😂 the nerve!
Really!
Ha Ha. I had my playback at 1.5 speed. I was like “Wow Troy, you’re killing it!” At normal speed I still think you’re killing it! Love your videos.
Ha ha… Thanks a lot!
Relentless bass line. Expertly played. Love it. And the tone on that bass, wow!
Thank you kindly!
Cool what you can do with a few chords! Well done sir!!!
Truth! Thanks a lot!
Great tune that I had never heard before. And very well played by you 🎸
I’m glad you liked it, thanks a lot!
