This is always the case. I dont agree with David on many things, but he is always calm and respectful and gets treated badly. but when someone like chloe swarbrick gets emotional and angry, they all love her..

Her interview technique seemed to be: ask a question, wait for perfectly reasonable and considered approach, then sigh and express horror. The scary thing is that she doesn't even realise how weak her position is. She probably thinks she won.
This will get memory holed once she realizes how ridiculous she is in the interview.
Her interview technique essentially is complain that his view isn't her own racist view.

New Zealand needs this man. Honest answers to questions -and saying the things that need to be said - things that the mainstream media never cover. This interviewer cannot see past her choice for prejudice over equality. David's composure answering her repeated attempts to goad him are admirable. She resorts to insults when she cannot prove her (unprovable) points.

I want a government that helps disadvantaged NZ citizens on the basis of their disadvantage, not their cultural identity. For me Seymour is on the right track here, there is a lot of Maori disadvantage, but striving to address it as one nation will lead to a better NZ than divisive twin governance will achieve.
If there's one thing history has taught us it's that race-based politics is always a bad idea.
Seeing this has given people like me a glimmer of hope for New Zealand. Nice work David, great composure. Act gained a new supporter today. 🤙

Like David Seymour, I have Maori whakapapa and neither do I want any special rights at any table of authority simply because of it. Further, I don't accept that "advocating for Maori" requires or equates to co-governance - and if having a different viewpoint on this to Willie Jackson means I am also a "useless Maori" then I am happy to join that club!

Moana , please explain what makes Maori indigenous . Maori arose , came to be , somewhere else , not in New Zealand . As I understand it , they came to New Zealand from islands in eastern Polynesia . Further to that , it seems likely that they came out into the Pacific , from Taiwan , based on the DNA evidence . So , are they indigenous to three different places ? To be indigenous is to have arisen in a particular region or place . By this correct definition , Maori do not qualify as indigenous . Not to worry though , such has been the movement around the globe of humankind over many thousands of years , that many ,many different peoples do not qualify as being indigenous to the land where they now live . Where is co-governance spelled out in the treaty , can you point me to the wording that defines that idea ? It is anti-democratic and that is the danger for it is the start of the slippery slope that does threaten to end in something like apartheid .

Never liked that woman, and I dislike her even more now. Maybe she should be going back in history and asking why Te Rauparaha and other chiefs took so much delight in the murdering and cannibalism of thousands of innocent maori during the Musket wars. And maybe ask when the descendants of those chiefs apologise and offer reparation. But she won't.
I used to think reporters tried to be impartial, but this was cringe worthy. The ‘dog whistle’ argument she threw out multiple times, showed she didn’t have a good counter argument. David did a good job staying calm and making rational arguments.

I'm not an Act voter for other reasons, but David certainly lays out a clear case against the race-based policies being promoted by the current government and activists. He was calm and respectful in the interview and she....well, not so much. I appreciate the interview though. Very good to see the different ideas discussed.
Seymour is melodramatic, he lays out too simplistic arguments only why something has the notion of a serious issue, but is then completely devoid of any real contextual comparison. He does weaponize his whakapapa just like Winston and it's disgraceful

While there is no question that there were a great many inequitable outcomes for Maori due to colonization - some of which persist to this day - there are a great many people of all backgrounds who started with nothing and through hard mahi, and perhaps some luck, they got ahead, especially in democratic societies. Nobody has a monopoly on suffering or having felt some sense of injustice in life, whether individually or otherwise. If one reinforces ones own sense of having suffered as though to suggest this is special suffering, then this can serve to perpetuate the suffering by re-living it over and over again. The entire history of the world has gone through immense suffering, which prevails to this very day with things like war, disease, abject poverty and all manner of other deficiencies inherent with the human condition. No one and nothing is perfect. No one people can claim they've not had blood on their hands. 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone'.
One thing which is interesting in this whole sphere of this often pseudo debate is that we never really learn about certain aspects of Maori life prior to colonization. Inconvenient truths as it were. Particular facets of life that are just not spoken about, such as slavery for example or human sacrifice. We learn about land wars and various other related things where Maori were victimized and disenfranchised, but never about what Maori were doing to themselves in terms of their culture. Not to put too fine a point on that because every one through history did the exact same things, and much worse in fact.
History should be about the good the bad and the ugly if we are to gain any half reasonable perspective on ourselves as the human race. If we engage in revisionism and romanticize the past as though to suggest it was all good then we do a disservice to ourselves in so memory holing the truth. Such a regressive approach is happening in many area's.
While I'd not doubt that there were times of joy and great prosperity prior to colonization, there were also times of immense suffering too. When human rights came to the fore, and the rule of law, and land tenure and higher education and advanced farming, and democracy, to name but a few positives, I would hazard a guess that despite many inequities too, life for most Maori improved greatly. Why is this not said? Was colonization all bad?
It's been said often, recently, 'trust the science'. Well, science would have us believe that the entire human race arose from one mother. DNA suggests this is the case.
If someone is in need of help or support, if they are poor for example, then they should be helped. That is in every ones interest. But this should not be based upon race, rather, need. I personally do not care what race any one is. I am more interested in the content of ones character; their heart; their actions. We can all do better.

You do realize colonisation wasn't for the benefit of Maori, it was for the benefit of the British. And the British that came have benefitted off the system created by them for them and their decendants. Maori were largely ignored for over 180 years treated as second class citizens, let's not think that the past 40years of bread crumbs makes up for that.
@@johnbrown3764 My post neglected to mention that colonization was something that happened all over the world since day one. Whether this consisted of tribalism(wars) within one country or greater wars(millions killed) between countries, or even wars between individuals, 'it' was something even Maori were engaged in, often. In effect, 'winner takes all'. That was how things were done before things like law and human rights and democracy arose. Maori were no exception. They were just like every one else. They still are. We are all part of the human race.
To be sure, the worst atrocities in the history of the world took place outside Aotearoa. What happened in NZ, due to colonization(the bad) is relatively mild in an 'international context'. But this in no way is to suggest that grievances experienced by Maori, and inequity perpetrated on Maori by colonization should not be addressed meaningfully, ie settlements and other avenues of redress within a rational society which respects the past. That has to be better than just, "I won it in war, so I own it all". For was not 'that' part of the Maori way prior to colonization? Just like the entire history of the world? We live and we learn. Together we advance, peacefully and with consideration of past injustices.
We all share a common ancestor. Before that, we emanated from stars. This is what science tells us. A rising tide lifts all waka. Some may get more than others, and others start off with very little, but this does not infer that hard work, diligence and discipline will not bring forth fruit in a place like NZ. We all struggle at times in this life and it does not so readily discriminate based on race. Misfortune and fate will dictate all by themselves. Often times, all people are their own worst enemies. Suffering, it can be argued, is, and always was, and always will be, part of the human experience. Only God knows the true score.

Very well said , and it is a most important thing to be said . Life , for the great majority of humans is in some sense a struggle . Fight real inequity , sure , but do not perpetuate the fallacy that it is the only reason for failure . Humanity is quite likely , still not very far along the road of any kind of full development of what really is human . We all have a whole lot of work to do in that regard .
Everyone should read "New Zealand The Benefits of Colonisation" by Adam Plover. Quite insightful in providing a picture of what Maori tikanga, matauranga Maori and te ao Maori, i.e. Maori life was generally like before colonisation. Not a great deal better than a living hell, but fortunately most didn't have to endure it for long given life expectancies of the time. On the whole, the benefits far outweigh the very few detriments.
@@utubermax the irony is colonisation for Maori meant that more than half of Maori died from diseases brought here by pakeha, and then because of the theft of land and access to their resources by greedy land grabbing pakeha Maori were left to struggle and died from poverty. If racial separatism and special entitlement for people with any trace of Maori ancestry is justified by the Treaty, I have two questions for Moana:
1. For a person with mixed ancestry, say part Maori and part British, with the Maori part claiming special privileges because of Maori ancestry, does the British ancestry part has any obligation to facilitate such privileges, or is this part of ancestry simply ignored in this instance?
2. The Treaty was signed by Maori and the British. As I don't have neither Maori nor British ancestry, my ancestors were not party to any treaty. So what is my actual status in this country? Am I an alien, a guest to Maori, to the British, a foreigner, a third class citizen, a Kiwi, or what am I?

The interviewer won't admit that she believes that the 15/16s-European ancestors of Maori deserve unique special privileges and financial gains beyond those given all other New Zealand citizens. Seymour described his ideas clearly. The interviewer just called David names, and could not defend her race-based beliefs.

She sounds horrible, and comes across as someone who has already made their mind up that David is the enemy. She uses tones and facial expressions that confirms this. When David answers her questions with calm, honest answers, instead of engaging in respectful dialog she hits him with her next pre-planned question/accusation.

This reporter is showing her lack of understanding of early Maori history before the Treaty was signed in 1840. Left to their own devices prior to the Treaty Maori were killing each other off at an alarming rate with their tribal wars based of past unresolved Utu (revenge) issues. European Colonization of New Zealand was the saving grace of the Maori population left after the musket wars prior to the Treaty.
Part of the reason the musket war happen was due to manipulation from the crown. They couldn't outright take the country by force like they did in other countries such as Australia. Musket wars were fueled to weaken Maori population, just like what they did in india
Not true, the musket wars were an escalation of existing tribal conflicts. The British were very reluctant to provide Māori with modern weapons. The crown gifted Hone Hika agricultural equipment when he visited England and he traded them for muskets and powder in Sydney before he got home.

First time I've listened to David. I'm impressed with him, his ideas and ability to express himself calmly and clearly. As opposed to the interviewer who is below standard, slips easily into anger, judgment and repeating herself.

His Epsom seat is gifted to him by national, act is just that an act. David Seymour knows his pretend anti treaty stance will get him votes and money, but when he was in government with the previous national government he supported everything he is now saying he's against. Good to see this thanks Moana. As a kiwi I like the way David's identified as being Maori, that's great. He's correct in that this Labour Govt has directly undertaken the undemocratic promotion of Maori, this is not a balanced NZ view at all, it's blatantly divisive as us kiwis know and not a good thing for our country. And, unfortunately as the interviewer Moana came across as being a person fighting for survival in a world ruled by 'white' people, and that's lamentable, you need to lose that victim stance, it's just 'past use by date' this day and age.

This Maori Seymour comes across as twice as clever as most people. Instead of celebrating, he is disowned. His own people is saying: “He doesn’t get it”, “He’s a useless Maori”. Yet if a prisoner is trotted out or a damaged youth, we loudly proclaim, “those are our people suffering”.
We should be asking, how did he do so well inspite of such great difficulties? How did his parents nurture him, gave him a good education, looked after him to make him what he is now. Obviously, all these were done while he was very young. He was never left to be damaged, to be surrounded by people/parents or objects that were central to damaging people. Maybe that’s the secret they have to learn from him, to nurture, educate children from very young.

I think she should have said agree to disagree because she's just not smart enough. Debate should be between intellectual equals and a rebuttal of "lets move on" or "that's just dog whistling'' just doesn't cut it, particularly when all she did was dog whistle herself.

I don’t think modern day progressives understand classical liberals/libertarian type ideologies. New Zealand is young and still going through growing pains, but ultimately liberal values are best for everyone. Every other prosperous society has gone through it and ended up with liberalism.

What goes understated too much is land. Land equals wealth in this country and the fact that immediately after the Crown took sovereignty they took the land. How on earth did they ever expect Māori to thrive.

This interviewer shows her level of contempt for every New Zealander who’s not Māori. How she reacted to the phrase “Chinese health authority”. You’ve been shown up. She had NO valid answers for the questions David had & changed the subject when it got too real. Continued to attack him & sounded angry & patronising. It’s people like this that put everyone off the idea of co-governance. David got more votes from this interview. A pity you’re agenda didn’t work out!
We are all born on this planet as human beings. We are part of a huge system which encompasses the solar system, galaxies etc etc. This planet earth we call home belongs to everyone and at the same time no one. The land we walk and the land we use is being borrowed from nature for the time we are alive. How can anyone claim ownership of anything? It does not make sense, even our bodies are borrowed and nature will claim it back one day. This sort of interview is so primitive, these questions? Common guys let us all move forward as one people, as human beings regardless of anything.
