Initially, he was just adjusting his trotting stride to go over the jump the same as over the bars on the ground! He thought that was the game until you raise the jump! He's a very thoughtful jumper trying to figure out ' the game' you presented.
Agreed, he's very willing and trying. That's the biggest part for jumping or anything new.

Really good observation. He is eager to please. I think he’ll understand the game more as soon as he sees something high enough to make an effort to get over.

Can we just appreciate how much trust has been built in this relationship? That horse is like “if you say so” and trusts that Matt will keep him safe. I love this relationship, I love that rider too. He’s a fancy UA-camr and he still has skill, heart, and care.
This kind of confirms my thoughts about Emporio's back end. He's still seems weak and tight in the back. The polls do help elongate his back stride which helps match his front.

I think they needed to put more space in between the polls to help emporio to elongate his back and push with his hind legs more. You can kind of tell that he doesn’t push as much with his hind legs as he does with his front when he was just trotting but it was made more obvious when they went to the poles. They should definitely do more trot poles to help emporio push more. I use trot poles as a way to check if my horse is actually pushing or just faking the connection and it makes such a difference.

It doesn't look too bad! He's a stunning dressage horse with a funky jump but he does his best! Also I think pole work is great for any horse, it's a nice exercise that trains the horse's mind and attention too, they have to figure out their legs.
I love how he trusts you and wants to please you. You asked him to do something new and because he trusts you, he was willing to give it a try. If he was uncomfortable, he kept it to himself and didn’t complain. He’s a champion!
I’ve taught many horses to jump and most were off the track tb. Most did the strangest things at first. A few got it quickly. You “ cannot” say he’s not a jumper based on his first session. I thought he was very willing and just did not really know what to do with his legs at times. Free jumping in a jumping lane helps a lot to let them figure it out on their own. If you had to keep him going and put up gymnastics etc he will soon start to work it out. Would be interesting to see. While he might not be a top show jumpers most horses can get over 3 foot 6”.
@@justacinnamonsquare2480 Not true for all of them. I know some who jump really well. A lot depends on the training. I would never start a horse like that plus the poles were too close to each other.
I have also taught lots of ott thoroughbreds to jump and they are awesome. I prefer a thoroughbred.
I also work for an online suicide chat. Guy was very doom and gloom. Then suddenly after an hour he says he is like an injured racehorse and had no future. I jumped all over that! Told him injured racehorses make great show horses. Suddenly he wanted to be a show horse and felt hopeful! ❤️
Agreed I think this jumping and free jumping could be very helpful for building and strengthening his hind end and I'd love to see how he learns and see him figure it out. Track his progress of sorts. No horse should be a 1 trick pony :) I bet hed make a great jumping horse if given the time to figure himself out and strengthen his hind :)

You don't teach horses to jump. They know how to jump if they have to escape danger or pressure

Actually, you should always train your horse with ground poles, also as a dressage horse, and rider. So, its pretty weird to see, that he never tried that before...
@• Equestrian Edits • It has nothing to do with it - it is good for ALL horses to do pole work. they think a lot more, and use some completely different muscles. Otherwise, many horses get tired of walking in a dressage square all their lives. Just as forest walks should be done often
Jumpers should also have like 3-4 days a week dressage only, as well as a dressage horse need some fun sometimes, and some pole work.

He’s so used to working uphill on the bit that he didn’t get it at first. It was fun to see his ah-ha moment. There’s always a freedom on the other side of the jump and he seemed to discover that too. And yet he was a good boy and didn’t get wild and break on the other side. I had a horse who would always do a little woopdi-doo buck on the first jump because his feet where up in the air, his head a little down, and isn’t that fun wee?!
I love how he actually keeps his stallion out in a pasture, unlike a lot of people. It is so important for any horse's mental and physical health to have adequate turn out time.
Emporio is like: "thats boring, i need it higher. i am actually a jumpinghorse" LOL

He’s a natural! Having taught horses how to jump, the bigger the horse, the more you need to make something visually imposing for them to want to make the effort. When he trotted over it, I was like ‘perfect!’ Because he’s not afraid and he’s getting his confidence. But every time you said he wasn’t using his back, I had a giggle because I was like ‘at his size, he won’t use his back until 3ft’ :D What a clever horse!! I’ve had my big horses go over small logs-since they are more solid looking they give a better jump, but not until they have mastered jumps that fall down. Was fun to watch! Thank you :)

Wow. That was really interesting to see.
At the lower size, he's just going over it without jumping. I was a little bit impressed how he does it. That he walks over it without any problems.
And later, where it was higher, he jumps better over it.

He's just trotting and galloping over it with a bigger step in the beginning 😂 so funny to watch! But he's very brave and tries to figure it out ☺ so sweet!
I was happy to see that he did well and finished on a good positive note, he may never be a show jumper but will be able to jump anytime you want in the training arena for fun if nothing else. All in all you have a smart, talented and good looking horse!
Don't write him off too soon , he was really getting into it the last couple of jumps.

i couldn't help but laugh out loud when he was going over the lower jumps, the way he sort of tried with the front but kept on trotting with the back sort of made him look like he was running over the jump on 2 legs and it was so funny 😂 but he did really well on the higher jumps!! seems like he finally got what you wanted him to do :)
In my (limited) experience horses are trained to jump, not just set over a fence the first time. So I think it's not fair to judge his jumping on his first time. He's so tall he went over the first jumps more like a cavaletti. Once it was higher he had to put some effort in. I think he did well. 🙂
Some are naturals tho! We have a 3 yr old that just escapes the arena sometime by jumping over the side. Which is 1m60 ish. We haven’t taught him anything about jumping proper yet.
That’s what Matt is doing here. Introducing his horse to jumps. Most dressage horses of this caliber don’t work too much over fences, but it is nice for them if they like it. This is the proper way to start--poles and low jumps. It’s just that Emporio is very big, and little jumps are likely just too small for him to bother trying. But bigger fences are risky if he doesn’t know where to put his feet since it’s new to him, so it’s a process. Some horses over jump the little things, some under jump. Trained both and there’s no set way to respond. It’s just up to each horse.

I think he honestly looked like a normal horse would for the first time jumping.
He needs to have his head as he approaches the jump.right now his movements are all dressage-a sport horse doesn’t have its head held in.

I have an Irish Cob and she's not a born jumper, but she has a lot of fun doing it now and gets better every time. And our stable owner always used to tell me "every cow jumps a meter" to encourage me 😆
The last horse I rode regularly, the only saddle fitted to him was a jump saddle, so I did everything in a jump, all my flat work, trail rides and of course a little jumping here and there. Now anything that isn’t a jump feels so weird

Loved your video! I have found also that too small of a jump for a truly athletic horse can confuse them and LEG ON -- always easier said than done and it was a really nice educational presentation, thank u and seems like he really did enjoy the change of pace. Hard work it is, right? Going from dressage to jumping and back again but I think it really helps open the horse up and give them something fun and new to focus upon. Good for you!.

Imporio is only a novice at jumping. He just needs more practice and experience. Like anything it's time and effort. PREs can jump. Here in AU There are a couple that are good jumpers.

This video was a while ago but this just proves Matt is a great equestrian and a great horse man. His horse clearly trusts him and he clearly trusts his horse. The bond between these 2 is amazing.

I think it's amazing that you're introducing him to jumping!! When I got my 10 year old FEI guy he had never seen a trotting rail, other than to snort and spook at it, let alone a jump!!! That is so counter-intuitive. They need to try new things, they need to step away from the dressage ring and let their mane down...so to speak. And it's super cardio exercise!! I was blown away by his eagerness, he is game for anything. He doesn't need to be a GP champion, as long as he's having fun and super cool about new things. I would love to see you try him over a nice little gymnastics when he has some experience, they are such a great teaching tool and with the distances a bit tight, he'll learn to sit back and snap up his knees up! But honestly, you should be sooooo proud of your gorgeous super star!! He's all neck which we LOVE!!! Congrats!!

I did some jumping with a PRE and the same happened, it feels really weird. It needed to be "high" to jump but when it got too high it didn't work anymore. Thank you for this lovely video!!

You could say that because this breed lift their legs up higher than most other breeds, that they are already taking kinda mini jumps during trot and canter ✨😛

It kinda looked a bit like once he was at the rail he thought he had to hurriedly walk over, when it was low, I was wondering if maybe putting the trot poles before the jump would help him rush less and think about what the question is you're asking of him, instead of just scooting his butt over the poles last second and feeling hollow

He looked a lot like my welsh cob stallion when he first jumped and he has the same barrock build... To it too. And believe me after a couple of lessons he flew! And he loved it sooooo much! 😍😍 So i would recommend jumping or doing cavaletti once a week with him it's a nice change of events and he seems to enjoy it lots
My horse does jumping mostly, and I bought and rode in a dressage saddle for a bit. It was different for sure. He is built downhill so he feels very even in a jump saddle. I felt like I was going to go off the front in a dressage saddle!

When he was all hot at the beginning, I really, really, REALLY loved the way you regulated his rhythm using your body and the rhythm of your rising in trot and didn't hang off of his mouth. Very impressive. Lovely riding. As for jumping, it takes them a minute to figure it out, so I'm with Jesse; we really have no idea how good he is at it and we won't for a while, if ever, because I know that isn't your focus. But it does look like he enjoyed a little off property fun very much and it did seem like a fun confidence boost for him.

I think you should try this more often! He looked so happy when he got the hang of it and maybe you'll never be able to jump super high but it's a nice distraction from the dressage work and helps build balance
