Jumping is great strength training for dressage horses, too. They need to use their hind legs in a whole different way to push themselves off the ground.

He does have a very nice pop and one of the more important factors is the strength of the canter and striding, which he seemed to have a natural ability for, you can tell he didn't like getting deep into them so he was quick to figure out the right spot and how to accomplish it. No, we need to build muscles and endurance to be able to make it the hole way safely without injuries or other. Horses needs the same, he isn't jumping on a regular basis yet, so they need to take it slow and build up his confidence and muscles and not jumping one meter from the get go. When you start something new do you not start from the basics and work you way up to more advanced things? To get you more confident and not to hurt yourself. They are usually really honest and have a round jump, but tend to lack strength for the bigger classes and tend to have a smaller stride than a normal jumper. He looks like the classic PRE, I think he could be a super horse for the smaller classes!

He also managed to get his strides right without having the aid of a ground pole to help him see the jump and judge the distances for his strides... that would have made it easier for him.

Definitely something there.. also he seems to enjoy so worth keeping going with it regardless. The refusal to me looked more distance related than a stop, keep in mind that if the first fence is smaller he may not be landing the two steps in distance which is usually used as that could be affecting the distance to the second fence. A tip i was taught when walking a distance is to take your two steps for landing, then look back at the fence and see if you think that is where they will land for the height, then adjust if need be (so shuffle forward or back depending), and then start walking the distance from there. Same can be done at the end of the line, don't necessarily walk the two steps for take off but at the end of the stride look and see if you think that is adequate take off room for the horse. This just helps to adjust for the variables of that particular situation. Maybe trying a three stride or a slightly shorter four would be a good idea so he doesn't have to get as quick to make the distance. But great starting point and he looks so cute and happy doing it :)

I am quite sure that he would not have stopped, if you had built it easier for him. The distance between the fences should have been 1 to 3 strides, so that he always comes to the second fence in a perfect rhythm and not has to think about if his strides match the distance. It is easier for the new horses to start with one in-out and then one or two strides to the next fence. It gives them more security. A long distance between jumps gives a horse too many different possibilities, and he is not experienced, so it overwhelms him.

This is a good way to bring in variety to Etro's training exercises, might help with him achieving a more natural formed canter pace & balance, too.
As a PRE he already often uses the forehand, so maybe you'll have to be careful about how well his legs, like his knees (Vorderfußwurzelgelenke) are going to absorb the strain from doing dressage and jumping.
But I'm sure you'll keep an eye on that.

I have been riding all my life. I just turned 66 yrs old. My friends & I did so many different kinds of things with our ponies & horses growing up! We all had one individual pony or horse, so they all had to learn & do lots of different abilities. Of course each had their favorite things they excelled in, but the neighborhood horses & ponies were very well rounded & a happy go lucky bunch! We all hung out & rode in an old abandoned Orange 🍊 Grove. It was a great place to grow up & ride. Our jumps were dead & down Orangetrees! We rode our horses to the horse shows on weekends, held at different stables in the area. The reason I am sharing this is because I can not stress enough how important it is too be open in trying something new with your horses. They can get stuck in a Rut, just like humans. They can become board & tired of the same old stuff they already know & their attitude & attention span can change into bad habits. Stimulating their brains & challenge them in trying new things can be really fun for them & you, ending on a daily accomplishment makes for a happy horse! Just don't push to hard or to fast! Have fun & celebrate them, like you did in this video! Being a horseman isn't just about winning Blue Ribbons & Trophies. The one & most important thing I learned is, It's about having a relationship, a friendship & a partnership with one of God's favorite & bravest Spirited Creatures ❤ the Horse! You give them your heart, they will trust you with their soul! God is the happiest when his children are at play! Enjoy the Journey!

Awesome!!! I don't know if you use these in Europe, but here in the USA we do a lot of placing rails down on the ground before the jumps a) just on the ground to help him gauge how high the jump is, and b) sometimes 6 feet out from the jump, so he can either canter or trot it. I'd love to see how he does with those additions, and see if he does better or worse!

I think all horses are natural jumpers but whether they like it and will willingly do it is something else. Keep having fun, that what it is all about.

He seems to really enjoy this and he did it very well. Matt, you seem to be a bit interested in jumping. Maybe start with Chase again? A little bit of variation for you and who knows you might end up as an eventer😉 giving Jesse a heart attack at every XC.😅 Life is short, should do everything that brings joy to it...

This is really good to do for any horse! Jumping is great for the horse's back, neck and hind legs. I have been jumping my 19 appaloosa for 2 years now and he still has the energy of a 10 year old.

I had a 14.2 hand Morgan that was a jumping machine. 4 + feet easy peasy. And super smooth going over. Built a cross country course in the woods. Fabulous man!
