How to install the Dodge Ram Steering Gear box Stabilizer that can solve death wobble if all your linkage is tight and you have a good steering dampner and your truck still does the death wobble. - Навчання та стиль
I recently purchased this stabilizer....I didnt have the wobble but I did have 11 to 1 play,,,I am not a mechanic....I t installed very easy by following the directions,,,all my play is gone...Well worth the money
Thanks for the information!! I just installed one of these braces to my 03' Ram. It works as advertised! Your video was the selling point for me to get one! My Ram was jumping all over the place until I put this thing on! You're a great help with your videos!!
Just installed the updated linkage and Synergy stabilizer on my 06 Ram 2500 CTD. Thanks for your videos. Gave me the confidence to do the job myself. Used a couple "love taps" and a "quick and dirty alignment" to get the job done. Simple. Even a pharmacist can do it.
Aloha, just wanted to let you know, I watched your video and followed you instructions. I bought the stabilizer from Don. Installed it this morning in about 15 minutes and just got back from my test drive, THANK YOU very much this is amazing.
Just installed Stabilizer bar the other day and what a big difference it made. Thanks for the video!
you should have set your Allen screw set screws last now when you tightened up the outer bolts at the frame you pushed upward on your steering shaft out of the gearbox.
Just put mine on. Same brand as one as shown in video. Cost about $120.Watch video as it is very informative. I used a floor jack and it worked great. Test drive proved to remove sway and drift. Not a mechanic and it took me about an hour. Finally found something to fix DW and drift. By the way, 06 Dodge 2500 with 37 inch tires. I did put a pitman arm that is for a 6" lift. All good. Thanks for a great tutorial video. Rockin the mountains in NV.
@feedinc I've had it on there for about 180 miles so far and I really like it. It makes the truck FAR more manageable to drive when roads are narrow and rough at high speed.
You Rock! This is a life saver, literally! I almost went off a cliff the other day, 500 ft drop because of a pothole and death wobble...
It's been rock solid. Love it!
@beefystik I've had that compressor for like 7-8 years. It's the cambel hausfeld oil bath one. I bought the small tank one for doing mobile work. I should have a bigger tank, but just haven't made it a priority. This one does pretty well to keep up.
Thanks a bunch briansmobile1! I just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, and as preventative maintenance, I'm going to install this stabilizer now. Very good video, great details!!
Super easy to put in and really tightened up my steering.THANKS!!
Hey Brian... Thanks for these videos on the DEATH WOBBLE... i have 3 Dodge Rams. and 2 of them had the WOBBLE so i purchased 3 Stabilizers just a few minutes ago... THANKS THANKS THANKS.!!!
Just ordered mine. Thanks for the install video!
Good stuff man! Glad you got it delivered and installed. Let us know how it works out, after you have had it on there for a couple of months! Great video!
You're welcome! I know how frustrating that can be. This made a HUGE difference on my 01. Some of the 03-05 years are really picky on lower ball joints and tires too. The factory lower ball joints have 1/2" play up and down after only 30k miles and Dodge says "that's fine and designed that way", but that will shake your teeth out- use MOOG problem solvers to correct that.
I cut out a notch in the front of the frame and welded it in. I now have a winch bumper that is also integrated by some "wings" on the tube. The winch bumper frame is bolted to the wings.
You're gonna LOVE it!
Replacing the steering gear box solved the problem. This stabilizer makes the gear box last longer and reduces frame flex. Showing an after clip would have been a great idea. As for the stud, I'm not sure what you are referring to.
@Bonfield2002 Replacing the steering gear box made a HUUUUUGE difference. This Helps keep the nerves calm hitting bumps at speed and helps prolong the service life of the steering gear box. I had 80 miles or so of construction riddled highway driving/towing with a new gear, but no box stabilizer- the stabilizer really tightened out the slop even more.
I have seen two of you videos on here and the first worked, I just ordered the kit for mine today. I have already replaced track bar bushings, steering stab. the wobble is way better but still exsists, I hope this works, as I have alomost 2" of play on wheel, more if i have a trailer. I am aslo installing outer tie rods.
I drift and this really Helps!!! with stability and control at the steering wheel!!! Awesome Man!
Once death wobble sets in- it's common to wear out your track bar. However any steering component that has a lot of play in it can contribute as well.
Had issues on my 3/4 ton 2500 miss that truck now have a 1997 1500 with 5.9 360 these vid will help save me money thanks
Way to go! You're the MAN!!!
You're welcome! Enjoy safe driving!
Great Video! Thanks for the share, just replaced all the components on my 05 2500 Diesel and got tons of wander, hope this helps me out. This video will make the job that much faster, thank you!
I just got the same unit from amazon and it was made by heavy metal and came from cali . My directions showed a 2'' x 2'' tube version so I was curious which way to have the 90 degree bend go as tow hooks and other issues may affect my install so I appreciate your video as my directions are so vague it may as well been a Chinese version as put truck on 4 jackstands was all they really spoke of with a few pics and no torque values or tools needed
@smokinjoe1969 If you have other components that are loose like ball joints or inner tie rods etc. It can cause it or if your steering gear box is worn out it also can cause DW.
@09victoryrc have you seen mine? They are the halo HID ones.
Glad you like it!
Great videos, I have a similar problem with my 95 dodge ram but I'm not sure if it's the gear box or the stabilizer... I'm not a mechanic but I try to learn as much as possible off videos like these so I can fix my problems
Check your other linkages for play. Often when one component is sured up the symptom of another may be more pronounced. Your steering gear box may also have play on the down shaft- possibly why the misalignment of bolts.
Hey Tim thanks for the response let me know how it goes I am thinking that instead of being over the sway bar it will slip under the sway bar good luck hope it works
Thanks a lot Steve!
I have seen it. I have that brace on my truck. It helps quite a bit and is worth having, but I still eat gear boxes doing what I do.
Just received my unit today. thanks for showing how to instal it.
Thanks Bruce!
Brian, got my hands on a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500. Its my first american I ever own. Thanks for the video, Thats a good heads up cause my Dodge does have that death wobble, I really didn't know what was going on when I started to drive it.
You're welcome Steven!
Nice video I will be using this to install mine. How about some info in that receiver hitch setup on the front? I'm guessing it's for a front winch setup? I wanna be able to do that on mine too
Cool video Brian , im gonna order one for my Ram this week... thanks...
Great info ... already have found a few ideas on fixing some of my issues. Will let you know what happens.
Great video very informative thank you Brian
All your videos are great Brian. Thank you for posting them for all to see. I installed this steering stabilizer and a new steering gear box this last weekend. All went smooth, but now my steering wheel is a little misaligned. I cant seem to find out how to straighten the steering wheel. Any thoughts?
watched your video and bought the same one directly after, i hope it will help my 99 running 35s
@MrSmellyMonkey I don't know what the car is, but if I had to make a blanket statement guess I'd say switch to a synthetic gear oil that's runny when cold. I know Dodge had to do that on their 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks that are manual.
I really enjoy watching your video's :)
brians mobile you always there with a how to vid! thanks
great idea. what was the road test like after? obviousoly this product was tested before if was ever sold to make sure it worked, but did the actually steering of the truck feel different, like tighter or anything.
The other things that can contribute are ball joints and tires.
Great video .. Keep them coming !
THANK YOU!
Installed my steering stabilizer today. Not too hard. Also replaced the stabilizer shock as well. No more death wobble for me!!
You're welcome! and good luck
Did this help your problem? I have a wandering Ram but it already has this stabilizer installed. I also have a new track bar, steering box, and linkages. The only thing I haven’t tried is the bushing at the firewall and new steering stabilizer. Thanks for the video.
soooooooo if I don't get the DW with my 98 ram, but my steering is super sloppy, with 2.5 inches of travel on each side, should i invest in this? Will it fix the slop? I've seen the other video for the new barrings at the end of the spring on the column. Thanks, and keep up the informative videos.
You're welcome. for the rear end I'd take the cover off the diff and check the backlash and run-out.
I just had this installed on my 03 3500 SRW. it is crazy how tight everything feels now. no play, and no no death wobble.. thanks for all the pointers.. got any for rear end whine at 30 - 35 under load?
I used a 3F gearbox. It lasted great until I did an offroad baja type race-run with the truck and then it got play and wiped out a MOOG tie rod too. Otherwise it would have been fine.
What was the final consensus on the test drive? how much improvement did it make? Any issues now? Thanks
Just bought the same one you have , what are the socket sizes to do the job?
Great video Brian. I was wondering after you replaced the steering gear box did you still have steering wheel play? My buddy has a 97 ram 1500 with a good 2-3 inches play either way. Soon I am going to replace all of his steering components as well as install the steering gear box stabilizer, I was just wondering if I should just go ahead and tell him to order the rock solid ram truck steering upgrade. Did you decide to install one or did the new steering box do the trick?
Brian, when you replaced your steering box, what did you replace it with? The blogs are all over the place on what to replace them with. Great video!
Good vid, I used it as a reference for my install tonight. Unfortunately, I got DW on a test run (right at 85mph). Steering does feel more solid at slow speed, but this isn't the fix. I also changed out two tie rods and my steering stabilizer. Any suggestions?
Nice video's man. Just one question though man.. My car has a manual transmission and it seems to be a little sticky when shifting, mainly when cold. Is there any way i can sort this out? Maybe by lubricating something? I'm more of an electrical guy and not so mechanically minded, any help would be appreciated :)
Brian, would you suggest changing the existing steering box after having experienced DW several times, before installing the stabilizer brace? Or will the brace maintain stability in an already loose steering box ?
Not to get off the subject but I have been considering making a receiver under the front of my truck and was wondering how you have yours set up. Thanks
Brian have you ever had to remove that bearing? I'm trying to replace the steering gear and I'm having problems getting that bearing off now.
The key to knowing what will make the biggest difference for you is to have someone turn your steering wheel back and forth the range of the play with the engine off and check each component for play. Then replace the parts that are bad.
@09victoryrc I LOVE MINE! I couldn't see elk crossing the road at night not to mention angus cows with my old faded out headlights. I can see them on the road a mile away now.
what size lift is on your truck? tires and rims to ? they look nice in your other videos
Brian, have you ever seen the video regarding death wobble on Dodge trucks your year and they address pitman arm movement? They say it's a DESIGN FLAW regarding the pitman arm being at an excessive angle, etc. Kevins off road also mentions steering box frame bolt location/pattern thus the use of the brace, his brace looks different as it clamps on the bottom of the box but that seems a better design as it holds pitman arm shaft directly-- do they make that design for the ZJ??
Nice thanks for your videos.
Hey when you installed the brace, did you put your truck on jack stands? Do you need to put them on jack stands?
Thanks
I can't clearly see but do you have a front hitch installed as well?
You're welcome man- thanks for subscribing!
Brian do the 3500 trucks need this as well?
@briansmobile1 thanks for the reply man! Just for your info, the car is a Vauxhall Vectra, im in the UK. Got a couple vids of it on my channel if curiosity gets the best of you. If not, it's all good :) Once again, thanks for the reply
Installed yesterday, the bracket would not mount centered with the non adjustable holes, so I had to "extend" the bearing mount holes abit to adjust it properly. BUT IT FIXED that slight steering wheel movement from left to right!
question, turning left is stiff and turning right is loosing feeling, I cranked the wheels to the right one day on a hill and the right side feels real loose when turning now. Any tips plz?
@greenbay51894 I'm not aware of any. This vender only indicated for 4wd models.
What size socket is used to tighten the shaft that replaces the big nut? Did you tighten it with an air impact until it wouldn't move any more?
will this work with a 6inch lift kit where the sway bar is dropped a few inches down with spacers ?
Good stuff, let us know if you do notice a difference than before.
If yours has play, yes.
PSC makes the exact thing. Lowered their price! Nice job!
You're welcome- wish I'd done the same with mine when I got it.
Run it for awhile need to replace bearing can’t remove it, any suggestions
Great video, thanks.
That’s fits on 4x4 and 2wd ,,? Because I have the same problem and I found a part on amazon but they said does not fit on 2wd so they have for 2wd too ,, ? Please help thank you
the shop i'm at now has done a bunch of these, but we've removed a few, my boss says the track bar bushings are the reason for death wobble after they where out, but i haven't really had to diagnose one. i've only replaced a few track bars or installed this kit because he told me to.
I have 06. I sent this company an email and told him I had a 6" lift. He said it will work. I'm putting mine on tomorrow.
What about changing the pitman shaft bearing instead of gearbox?
@briansmobile1 No,I didnt know you had them,I was looking around on amazon and you tube for my scion TC and the dodge sets look very nice...and thinking about getting a set,I like the LED tail lights and have them for my TC,so maybe Il get a set of the headlights.
Maybe you can help me out bud, I have a 05 dodge 3500 dually, 16" suspension lift, 11R22.5 18 wheeler tires and rims. It has dual steering stabilizer shocks yet I have a horrible problem with it walking left to right while driving. on a good road, not so bad, but its a workout on anything else. No visible play in any of the steering components. Got the truck aligned and help very little (bout an inch out of tow). Would this stabilizer help me ?
great video I need to make one for my f250
Bro, thanks! I've rebuilt my '98-2500 Diesel 4 WD's front end 4 times over the last 10 years and have had this problem most of that time. I'm gonna try this kit, for sure it's going to help provide needed stabilization, but I think Kenman1717 is right. Those pesky trackbar bushings have to be tight!
Thanks for the video. Found the same kit on ebay for a much lower price, $45 to be exact, dodgeramsteeringstablizer.com's price of $130 was a bit much. And the specs is identical. Again my gratitude to you for sharing video.
I've heard a lot of good things about Red-Head steering gearboxes curing the death-wobble and have thought about purchasing one for my 99 Ram 1500, but they are close to $400 (with ~$150 core) and I have never seen any follow-up reviews. I tried doing a Google search on 3F gearboxes, but nothing came up.
I have already replaced every steering/suspension component on the front end (100% Moog), minus the gearbox and steering shaft. Springs and tires included. And the steering slop remains.
