All you anti-Jake Brakers need to understand that using the retarder in those conditions needs the same careful consideration as any other decision you make. Which gear, what engine rpm and so on. You can screw your self just as easily with the Jakes off as you can with them on.

A skilled driver knows how to use Jakes and brakes and all other tools at his disposal in the proper proportions/settings for the particular situation. The best and most effective method for getting yourself out of shit is to not let yourself get into it in the first place. Don't be in a hurry - take a few extra minutes to get down the hill in one piece and shiny side up.

Pulling Triples up this type of Grade ,with that much weight on a poorly plowed road an no salt or sand on it, you are asking for trouble. When I used to pull Doubles on the I-90 in the winter I used to have change my boxer shorts every 100 miles.
I love this. Hauling in treacherous conditions is the best, I pretend I have a whole town waiting for me to bring food and it makes the ride much less stressful.
Drive down with a crack open side door...getting out before the truck goes free on its own...aint savin those wheels when they break traction...I wouldnt drive that more than 5 mph

But if you're at the bottom of Hill and you start to go up and realize you can't make it you can just back down and go a different way.
What was the paint of that flagger if he clearly wasn't even controlling traffic? You could've easily ran into that pickup if you were seconds earlier.

Coming into a downgrade curve on slippery pavement with load pushing truck, Jake brake applies resistance to the front portion of the semi. Could cause a Jackknife... a lot will depend on how cold, ice, snow or rain whether or not Jake will affect the theory of Weight, mass, and velocity... stay safe out there Drivers. We all want to get back Home.
You have to be behind the wheel to access that. It looks incredibly slippery but from my years of experience Jakes can be used in many conditions. They also cut out at 1100 rpm usually. It seemed that the truck going down was on low, and was in complete control. I once went down an 8% grade in compact snow. On the decent was a right bend then a left. The road was banked the opposite way and when I looked in the mirror I could read the company name on the rear trailer. I sped up a wee bit and straightened it out. An on I went.
I'm in my 16th winter as a truck driver. I used to do the lower 48 (53' dry vans), now I just do Cali & Nevada (20' & 40' containers). I've used jakes in snow/ice since my first solo haul chained up over Vail, Co. I-70. Just used them last week through Donner, Ca. I-80. On downgrades, I put my Mack on Max Brake mode and just let her do the work. I rarely touch the brake, even when I'm at 70,000+ gross. I never go over 30mph when chained, I'm always around 25mph. I've never had an issue using jakes in ice/snow.
Technically, that's not a set of trips, it's a straight truck with a box on the frame of the truck and he's pulling two boxes. Surprised no one has said this yet.
