Not so tough with a pick. Fingerstyle would be another story, but that wouldn't be punk. The drummer actually has the toughest job, here. One can tell that the next song was A Forest. The bassist wasted no time in getting across the stage to the keyboard, and we hear the initial A and C before the clip ends.
This was the time when synth bass lines made their entry, often unplayable for bass guitarists, actually already in 1977 with Moroder. Bass guitarists needed to step up their game, like this! (Or play more melodic base hooks, on top of the rhythmic synth bass, like Peter Hook in New Order)
pick or no pick, thats serious bass playing...an Object has impossible bass playing, i know, my old band attempted a cover. You cant get that sound without a pick...
Saw the cure in 1978 and they just stunned the audience..all the punk bands of the time were windmilling around the stage..the cure just stood stock still with a sweeping single light behind them and were electric..crowd went wild..great days..great band..particularly remember 10.15 Saturday night..wow!!!
I know that videos of live performances tend to focus on the singer, but in this case they didn't spend nearly enough time showing us the bass player as he was performing. He had the toughest job, give him some props by showing him shred.
The beginning sort of sounds like Secrets, which would sound interesting if Robert proceeded to play Grinding Halt in that mournful, slow paced, Seventeen Seconds era style. It's easy to tell now that they were already heading in that direction even at this early of a point in the band's existence. Seventeen Seconds is my favorite record of theirs.
@bassnicola great! actually I am able now to play this version of Simon Gallup but it will be still cool! JSET is the next song I wanna be able to play, maybe you can help me out with your cover! cheers!
Is that Simon Gallup? If not its from 1978/1979, I guess. But I can't really say.. If I look at Robert's look, then I'd say maybe 1979, or 1981 (he looks similar in the Other Voices music clip so thats why..) In 1980 his hair is short (look at the A Forest and the Play For Today video).
always loved the speed from those early curesongs
Hoi ja klopt heb precies het zelfde..
True true. The direct and simple approach of their first album is really stunning.
Its cause tbh their early stuff technically could be classified as punk
Matiss Smidss post punk
Definitely. Just the right amount of just about everything.
The guy with the toughest job on this song is the bass player. Wish they showed more of his speed bass.
An excellent demonstration of the punk influences in early Cure

One of the best bass players of this time. Like Hook or Burnel... maybe better than both of them.
Simon run at the end and started to play a forest in the keyboard! youtube is the most amazing thing ever created.

Che vuoi dire..... chi può capire cosa furono all'epoca.... forse neanche io... e comunque everything is coming...... no time....
Bloc Party's first album sounds a lot like the cures first album. This version of grinding halt is amazing and fast.
I always thought Kele sounded a lot like Robert Smith in general
Simon walks over and starts up A Forest.....THIS WAS THE ULTIMATE CURE!!! Simon, Rob and Lol - FOREVER!
This song was my introduction to the Cure, it still is after all these years my favorite Cure song.
So so good back then. So much energy. Lol puts his heart and soul into it.
BEST VERSION of Grinding Halt
My fav " cure song "' during my college days. in the mid 80s..
Saw the cure at Macquarie University Sydney Australia 1980. Absolutely went off. Soooooo good!!!!!!!!!! And now I’m 62 and still love the cure ☮️❤️🙂
I’m 16 and I love the cure
Saw them someplace near Liverpool St Sydney about that time. Can’t remember the name of the venue.
Love the speed of this version of grinding halt....long live The Cure....
by far the best "grinding halt" video on you tube.
my dad showed me this song i love the bass its somewhat challenging but extremely fun and really catchy i love it
Evidently an early performance. Great song; Robert Smith is practically unrecognizable.
He was a fairly handsome guy..👦
Amazing Song.. Amazing Performance.. My favourite band ever 🧡🌻🎶
great performance, Lol's killing it, Simon is as usual back then making Michael's great bass lines even cooler and better
The song of 2020.
I know that videos of live performances tend to focus on the singer, but in this case they didn't spend nearly enough time showing us the bass player as he was performing. He had the toughest job, give him some props by showing him shred.
Boards are the toughest job. But the bass was sublime. (9 years later) lol
This song is basically the anthem to 2020 and Covid.
X los años 87 88 mas o menos escuche esre tema con titulo de paradero pulverizado...un temazo
Este es el the cure....puro talento el que escuche cuando era un niño yeahhh
My baby Robert has always given his all! We love you so much. I hope / think you know that.
The music to crush your wicked soul.
The Cure are the best UK band ever...fact
clear to see this song influenced The Drums' song "Let's go surfing" ...
I guess, if you make a dumb stretch.
One of my favourite Cure songs, *thanks* ! :)

A GEM! Thanks for posted =)
Eu vim por causa do vídeo do João Gord, Clemente e Jão no Super Plá!
Great drumming from Lol. Not technically amazing but solid as. Overlooked. He was crucial to the early sound.
@1969Brookie Any idea if there is a dvd with this gig or the gig in Boston underground 1980? Still looking for it!
the cure é muito massa simplesmente essa musica
outras musicas tbm sao legais como lullaby boys don t cry fire in cairo e etc..
yes he knows how to let his bass swing
0:04… More ahead of his time than he could’ve imagined…
💓
СУпер на них учились наши советские рокеры
Siempre tendrás una mano amiga en la soledad de la letrina.
I think robert's voice was better in old days...

I've been Playing this Song back 2 back....=D
week end !!
urgh.. Lol's got my heart
This song is actually reminiscent to the future songs. "Like the vibe is joyful and simple"
Lol's tight drumming
Wow. Almost Violent Femmes vibes
Possible to make good music with one drum, bass and lead !
Does anyone know when and where this was?
Is that Simon Gallup? If not its from 1978/1979, I guess.

Was there ever a time when Lol didn't look like a 50 year old removal man?
que llegue pronto el 21 de abril! =D
