Did a search and this came up. Looks like this will make me look like a hero at work tomorrow. I need to broach a new keyway in a bandsaw pulley opposite of where the old one wallowed out. Thanks for the tip!
Yet again Keith, you astonished me, this is a brilliant way to make a keyway, I have made hundreds of them using a milling machine, at school. Of course I don't have all those machines at home, so this is brilliant. Your a great guy Keith (y)
Wait a minute. Isn't it possible to make your own broaches? Oh, you said you don't have an arbor press. Can't rig the vise? Hide behind something and duck down. Great videos. I'm enjoying them. I liked that tip you gave about admitting the steam early to cushion the piston thru TDC. Excellent thinking.
Keith, what if you use a solid piece of round bar and drilled a suitably undersized hole in the correct keyway position, then bore out the round bar to the correct bore size. Then when you use your reciprocating keyway cutting technique it would possibly less tedious as there is less metal. Obviously you need to be very precise in your positioning. I shall try that today and see how I go as I need a keyed collar for a project I am doing.
A simple way to make a keyway. - first oversize the hole in the flywheel - turn a bushing and cut it on the milling machie with the correct diameter end mill over the lenght. - glue the bushing in the flywheel
I have done that in the past when the flywheel hole was miles out, but I prefer not to do it on this engine, as I machined the Flywheel from start to finish .....
I've seen people cut rifling into a pipe with a piece of hacksaw, could that be a good way to cut a keyway? I'm not needing to cut any keyways any time soon, but the Broach looked to me very similar to a hacksaw blade in apearance. :P
How about 1) a shaper 2)a set of file 3)the way shown in this video but properly executed. Frankly I have done all 3 and the skill is what really matters
first that is brilliant sir what a great idea . you have mad skills buddy lol dont you have a friend with a arbor press so you dont have to buy one ???
The problem is that small files can be very brittle and shatter under heavy loads, I still don't recommend fitting a file in a tool post whether it has shims or not. Use a lathe tool sharpened to cut the keyway, or better still buy a keyway broach like I did.
@@keithappleton thanks for the info. mostly curiosity. i'm a mechanic, not a machinist. we have an old, worn out, crappy lathe in the back room that only myself and one other guy out of 40 know how to use and it's only once in a blue moon to mess with. anywho, it the need ever arises, i will try to find a small piece of tool steel to do it with. have a good one. \o

Eureka!!! I have at last found a solution...
Thank you sir 🙏

I like your sense of humor almost as much as your videos!
Yes Keith this was helpful and also enjoyable so well done on 2 counts,
Have a good day and a better tomorrow
I always enjoy watching him work. Thank you very much.
Love your videos mate. Keep it up. You are the first channel I check for new videos when I get up. I've never been so fascinated about something haha.

Thank you very much for the good advice mr Appleton, i subscribed rigth away 😃
You and the lathe is good friends i see .
thanx to your vidoes i manage to do almost no work :)
thankyou and keep up the good work.

You can lock the spindle by engaging the back gear without freeing the spindle pulley. If you wiggle the spindle eventually the gears will engage.
Not on my lathe, the headstock spindle still moves.
“You can easily remove any fragments of tool steel stuck in your head”🤣🤣. Good video.

So practical, and so true.. life's too short
Parting tool? Does it make 2-parts like a "cut-off" tool? He said with tongue in cheek. Nice work Keith!
I would have never thought about doing it this way! Can you use your lathe to push a broach through the work instead of a press?
Yes, I have just done the job with a broach in the lathe . . . .
Great video. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Yay, I'm first.
Sitting here looking at Lathes online and saw your Video pop up. Talk about timing. :-)
Nice video Kieth thank you.
A Broach is really the only way to go, even a shop made one is belter than the other ways.

i tried this method on s small, cheap lathe. The tool post wasn't rigid enough.
Keith, Do you smoke your medications, or take them in your iv, it seems to be working, I like your videos, keep up the good work

I bought one today :-))))
Heath Robinson would be proud of you . . .
Ver' good idea though :)
Also, be careful not to let any chips fly into your mouth. As they can hurt very much when they're on their way out. :p
had a ct scan and they found a chip next to my spleen. dr says dont worry.
you mentioned a file. hmm, maybe mount a file to the tool holder. i might try this if i ever come across the need to put a keyway in something.
Do not fit a file in a tool holder.
@@keithappleton even with shims to protect the holder and screws?

@@esracoon with some work, broken drill shanks are usable for this method of keyseating.
Lol!!!! Like my ex wife! Hahahahaha Genius!
i use a shaper
I'm supprised there aren't any 'professional' engineers complaining about this 🤣
I don't care if there were any complaining - it works perfectly and it is a quick efficient job - what more do you want?
@@keithappleton what more could you want 😊. I'm just supprised that all. I love your videos by the way keith
You will show us how to do this with a keyway broach won't you?
Yes indeed I will :-))))
Worth watching just for the ex-wife joke.
You could have tried an old tooth from that ex-wife! Lol.
Damn it I fell into a coma
Does your ex wife watch your channel?
Hopefully not ........ :-)))
Shouldn't matter, because "ex".
