You can also shape a keyway by putting boring bar in lathe tool post and move tool in and out using the carriage. control depth of cut with the cross slide.
Also what if you don't own a shaper. There is another way and you could have done that quicker by just using an end mill, cut the basic half round slot, then use a piece of square HSS in the mill or lathe tool post & with power off stroke down/across & slowly cut the corners of your keyway. As soon as you said engineer I knyou were smart. But with no hands on experience. Keyway have been cut in steel with a shaper way before you were born.
Just mount the bar on the tool compound and put the part in the lathe chuck and then move the tool left to right and move tool in when making a cut and out when returning so not to drag the bit or the bit may get damaged , carbide cutter will crack off edge for sure going the wrong way on the work .

When i started the drill press rebuild i didnt have this machines. I´m learning little by little. I needed that tool to finish the next episode of the drill press series. I will try to upload next part next week :)

I don't use the lathe to cut keyway, it hammers the headstock bearings. Its not a good idea if you want to keep your lathe accurate.

Try that in a piece of heat treated 4140 and see how it goes!

I went to the machine shop to make the keyway for my 8 " pulley..You know what,? this old man just cut the keyway by hand just using a chisel !!,
And probably did it better than any tool.
Why did you not screwcut the thread on the lathe (instead of using a die, which is never ver accurate) or a combination of the two?
Was that aluminum?
Yeah, most of us have a lath in our shop. Heck, most of us don't even have a 'shop' - more like a corner to putter.
That's not the half of it. The machine at the end is called a shaper. If I only had the space for one of those...
